Don't Forget: Your SPG Picks

Now the season starts to really get fun, eh?  For the first time since 1996, the Blackhawks get to play a team they eliminated the season before.  Almost fitting that it was the Flames they beat in the Conference Quarter-Finals.  Of course, the Flames ended up winning that re-match 3-2 so we'll have to hope for a better result this year.

So now for tonight's game we get to see a Flames team that really only lost Michael Cammalleri but gained Jay Bouwmeester... there's good and bad to that though.  Cammalleri had a career year for the Flames last year, 39 goals and 43 assists made Cammalleri a point per game player.  And along with Jerome Iginla... well that was pretty much all of the Flames scoring.  Other than those two, no one scored over 50 points for the Flames.  So lack of scoring could be a problem for the team.  And, the Flames did lose Jordan Leopold and the always familiar to Chicago, Jim Vandermeer and Adrian Aucoin.  Of course the addition of Bouwmeester still gives the Flames a more than solid blue-line, especially when Cory Sarich returns from a foot injury.

Everything has been going right for the Flames so far this year, they won their first 4 games in a row giving them a western-conference leading 8 points.  They just suffered their first loss on Friday, falling to the Stars.  Before that the Flames had scored 4 goals or more in each their games and Miika Kiprusoff is still undefeated (Curtis McElhinney took the loss Friday).  The Flames are doing all they can to make me look like an idiot for picking them to miss the playoffs, though I did warn you beforehand that I'm an idiot.

We're sure to hate Rene Bourque some more as he's off to a hot start with 7 points so far, especially now that there's no one like Burish to break a stick across his face... actually, I think Hammer has been practicing that move, so there's hope after all.

No word yet on what moves the Hawks are planning for this game.  Eager is eligible to come off IR today, if not though, Skille could get a call up again from Rockford.  If neither of those things happen though, the Hawks will be down a forward tonight and could possibly ask Jordan Hendry to fill in... which honestly couldn't be too much worse than how Skille looked in his 5 minutes of ice time on Saturday.  After a pretty flat showing, I'd hope the Hawks come out with more energy but it also looks like the trend of facing a goalie on a hot streak will continue.  All three writers for the site will be in attendence, so expect the recap to be delayed... play nice in the game thread.

UPDATE:  Yup, as soon as I hit the "publish" button - it's announced the Skille has been recalled from Rockford.  I'd expect similar lines to what we saw Saturday but of course it's Q... so who knows?

Projected Line-Up:

VERSTEEG! - Toews - Sharp
Byfuglien - Bolland - Kane
Ladd - Madden - Brouwer
Kopecky - Fraser - Skille

Lets Go Hawks

I don't think Skille

Is meant to play on the 4th line. Really doesn’t suit his game style. Problem with that is there is no way in the fiery pits of hell he makes a spot on the top three lines (for now). Hopefully Eager isn’t too far off from being healthy.

by AirTrafficAJ on Oct 12, 2009 12:46 PM CDT reply actions

Agreed with Skille

Skille is much better suited for a 2nd line, however he will have to wait another year for that. All things considered, not a bad thing to have, especially with the problems we will have resigning players next year. Skille will have the chance to shine next year…. and he will shine. Until then he has to play where he can and he has to show he can be successful. I would have thought Dowell would have been a better fit, especially with Calgary coming to town and Eager out, but after the Hawks chose Hendry over Johnson, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Kane traded for future considerations in tomorrows paper.

TV/Radio edit

I don’t believe CSN is carrying the game, but, and it just delights me so to say this, Versus has the craptacular call tonight. Who’s ready for the pregame and intermission report stylings of the poor man’s Barry Melrose, aka Brian Engblom!? Can you really be considered something’s “poor man” if the original is shit?

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

The one night I can stay up and drink and watch a Hawks game, Versus has to suck ass and not make a deal with DTV.

Guess I’ll be watching it on the interwebs. :(

WOW too

Wide Open West needs to get Versus asap too; or vice versa depending on who you blame. At least you DTV people had VS. last season, I had to deal with this shit all last year too. The stupid thing with WOW is some areas (Cleveland, Columbus) have it but not Chicago. Dumb.

by K_Dog on Oct 12, 2009 3:13 PM CDT up reply actions

I have WOW too.

I called last year and asked them about getting Versus. If I’m remembering correctly, the lady said they were trying to work something out, but apparently it hasn’t happened yet.

Yep

I called and emailed them last year too. During the playoffs it got embarassing, inviting myself over to the home of friends or family with Versus. WOW recommended using the online channel request form, as it goes directly to their marketing dept.:

So lack of scoring could be a problem for the team.

The Flames were tied for 7th in the league last year for goals for…with the San Jose Sharks. Only Boston and Detroit scored more than Calgary at 5on5.

The Flames have some weaknesses…but offense probably isn’t one of them.

by Kent Wilson on Oct 12, 2009 5:02 PM CDT reply actions

Playing in Chicago probably is...

0-5-0 in 2008-2009 and outscored 22-8. That’s 8 goals in 5 games including the playoffs. Not that I don’t have concerns about tonight. Looking forward to a great game.

Yep.

Must be A. Johnson the way they’re talking about him in Calgary right now (lol).

"Call Detroit, tell dem... BULLSHIT!"

by Hungryhawk on Oct 12, 2009 5:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Well last year we did this...

…earth to Kent this isn’t last year anymore, and this year there is no Mike Cammalleri to take the pressure off of Jarome Iginla. Sure Rene Bourque and David Moss have gotten off to tremendous starts but don’t kid yourself this is going to be a low-scoring team throughout the year. Once Sutter gets his system fully instituted, offence will become a foreign word.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

by ChicoMaki on Oct 12, 2009 11:01 PM CDT up reply actions

The burning ring of fire to go down, down, down.

Let’s make this perfectly clear if the Hawks get off to an early lead (3-0) this could be gameover very quickly for the Flames. Why you ask? Sutter, for whatever reason, seems reluctant to split Olle Jokinen and Jarome Iginla and just having one offensive line which should make it easy for Q at home to get his match-up of the Madden line combined with Keith and Seabrook against Calgary’s top line. What about Nystrom, Bourque, and Moss? All have hit their monthly goals and point totals so not much more should be expected from these guys. The defense? It hasn’t changed much for the Flames have given up around 35 shots a game resulting in 18 GA in 5 GP and that’s been with Kiprusoff basically standing on his head.
This could be a game where Huet gets his game back a little and as long as he doesn’t fall apart in the 2nd period (7 of his 9 GA his season have come that period) he should stand in line for a W. Solid will do for this game that is for sure.
Considering Calgary was the right tonic for Toews last season to cure his goalless drought it can be expected that Toews does it again this year. Prediction: Toews will score tonight.
All in all should be a good game and LET"S GO HAWKS!

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

Hello out there

We’re on the air.
It’s Hockey Night tonight
Tension grows, the whistle blows,
And the puck goes down the ice.
The goalie jumps, and the players bump,
And the fans all go insane;
Someone roars, “Kaner scores!”
At the good old hockey game.

Oh! The good old hockey game,
Is the best game you can name;
And the best game you can name,
Is the good old Hockey game!

Here, here.

It’s an awesome and beautiful mountain town that is FAR more like most of B.C. than Alberta. Pop. 8000 with lots of tourists and 6 great ski hills in our immediate vicinity. It’s also Ryan Smyth’s home town. I usually love wondering around in my Toews jersey on Flames days. However, until I see the 5-5 I think I’ll hold off on going downtown (3 blocks away) for my beer – it’ll be full of Flamer rednecks. I was out pre-game anyway.

Calgary's gonna have a complex about the Hawks come playoff time

No lead’s safe for them anymore….

Somewhere, the 1982 Oilers are thanking the Blackhawks

they’re no longer the only ones to blow a 5 goal lead….what’s this one gonna be called, the Miracle on Madison? (that is the UC’s official address, right?)

very similar

to the “Monday Night Meltdown” the Cardinals had against the Bears a few years ago. i managed to go through the full range of human emotion during that one.

true

then again this Flames team is better than that Leinart led Cardinals team, so this one a little sweeter. But both rocked my balls off.

Unbelieveable game.

Salvaged my day, which was one of the crappiest days I’ve ever had, and then I go and see this comeback in person. Unreal.

Go Hawks go!

That was awesome

Coming to this thread after getting home from the game and watching the reactions go from near-suicidal to nirvana-like orgasmness.

You think if Keenan still coached this team his brain would’ve bubbled over by the 3rd period?

Some little thoughts on tonite from someone that survived being there...

1) Get Sharp off the point on the power-play. For the love of god, all he does is turn it over, let it out of the zone and make the wrong/bad pass from back there. This is now 3 games in a row where he has looked absolutely auful out there.

2) If we play like we did in the 2nd period we will be very difficult to beat. If we continue come out like we did today, we will be golfing in April.

3) Huet is maddening, but this wasn’t all on him. He really should have stopped 1 of those 3, but none we weaker than the 5th goal ollie scored. That was against Niemi. I’m pretty sure that this drama is FAR from over. Joy. I was hoping all teh silly drama shit stopped in the offseason.

4) If Barker continues to just open “the” door and roll out the red carpet for a forward a couple of times per game, his +/- will be somewhere around negative 100. That crap has to stop pronto. Campell, you’re also missing this homework assignment. Our D-men need to get there heads on a little tighter. It’s scary back there.

5) Really, get Sharpie oiff the power play point. PLEASE!!!!!

6) The games cannot get much more head scratching than this one. Each team looks like a sack of flaming dog poop for stretches. Both teams play about as well as they can for around 10 minutes. None of the Goalies look too solid. 11 Goals, None on the man advantage. I am still trying to figured out what happened…. But I’m happy we stole 2 points. That’s really the only way I can look at it.

7) If there are 2 players that really look better this season, It’s Kane and Big Buff. Those 2 were fantastic in the final 40 mins.

8) I’m going to start hoping that we will see more of Ladd on the top line. I know Versteeg has played well there, but Toews has been up there alone. I would love to see him get some help up there, and with Ladd there in the 3rd, hne did look better and much more dangerous on the ice.

9) We absolutely seemed to kill them in the face off dot. I can get used to this. I did see Fraser and Madden take a few face offs for Bolland. He was on the ice for them too. I’m thinking his back is still a bit iffy, that or Stash has a lot more confidence in the other 2 centermen. Something to watch.

I was hoping I wasn’t the only one old enough to catch that reference. Nicely done.

My goal? World domination.
