Meet Me In The Morning
So last time anything like this happened, I was 9 and nearly got thrown on the ice at the Old Stadium. Because of this occasion, the Three Amigos here decided to make a night of it, and hence, you'll have to wait until the morning to get a full wrap. Deal.

"If we can tighten up our netminding, we will be INVINCIBLE"
good luck with that. It’s a mess. Niemi is not ready for a fulltime #1 job, no one will take Huey, and apparently the organization hates Crawford (he’s not ready for #1 duty either).

If you think
Huet is the problem, yeah he may not be the greatest goalie. He is enough to get the job done but in order for that to happen the Defense needs to stop getting caught out of position. 2 of his 3 goals allowed were because the D were in no man’s land.

I certainly don’t think HE is the sole problem, but he is NOT the answer to any goaltending questions. None of the 3 current possibilities are. You need a solid dependable netminder to win a cup. We have a flake and 2 kids.

Wow!
For 12 minutes, Calgary dominated the Hawks like nothing I have seen, but with a 5-goal lead and 48 minutes to play, they just wanted it to be over.
Hilarious! To take a body shot like that and win, we just gotta own these guys for the rest of the season.
“There’s not really words to describe it … a huge lack of mental toughness within the group,” Sutter said. “It just says more and more about how much work needs to be down with this group. It’s not about structure or anything like that. It’s about stuff between their ears.”
Muahhh!
To all you fags who booed- Hah!
It looked like the 100-level was caught off guard by the early start, then, typically, they must have had a big day today, so they packed it in early.

I booed in the first.
Outside of the last few minutes in the first, that was the worst period of hockey I’d ever seen.
Plus my homosexuality forced me to.

Excellent advice for sports consumers...
…not fans.
Very occasionally, booing is ok. Unforgivable mental errors (Milton Bradley flipping the ball into the stands) and lack of effort, not simply getting beat.
The Hawks started very sluggishly last night, but give Calgary credit- they were on fire. IMHO, stern exhortation is the ticket here. Booing strikes me as edging one foot off the bandwagon.
Would you boo a teammate? This is the mentality I recommend.
by cliffkoroll on Oct 13, 2009 10:02 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't boo teammates.
I say ‘Get your fucking head out of your ass!’
But since ‘Boooo!’ carries much better from the 300’s than "Get your fucking head out of your ass!’, I am forced to boo.
I don’t boo lack of talent, only lack of effort. And they came out of this game, in front of another sellout and another loud anthem, and looked like the gatorade was replaced with Nyquil. And I said Boo. Boo to that.
And they heard that. And they internalized it. They wanted me to cheer, and so they went out and made that happen. And all was good.
Got more soul than a sock with a hole.

Maybe it's just me...
…but “Wake up!” or “Let’s go!” or “Get you head out of your ass!” is infintely preferabe to booing, and these sentiments carry ok. Booing smacks of disloyalty.
Calgary is hot and had the whole summer to think about the Hawks. It would have been hard to match their early intensity.
Over 2,400 minutes of home ice this year, there will be times when the Hawks are outplayed, and some will boo whenever this happens.
So far this year, two games, 4 points, lots of boos.
by cliffkoroll on Oct 13, 2009 10:27 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe we should have a contest.
Sportsgal is down in the 100’s with the executives and top hat set.
Next game you go to, have one guy yell, “get your head out of your ass” and the other guy boo. See which sentiment carries down better to her.

But...
…you’re implication is that booing conveys the same message as other ways of expressing dissatisfaction.
It doesn’t sound that way to me, but I’m starting to feel like the minority opinion here.
Again, we picked up four points the last two games. If I’m a Hawk who’s been around a few years, I gotta wonder how these “fans” have gotten so spoiled so fast.

Also i never understand the people who despise those who boo. If you show me evidence that booing causing an athlete to perform worse, then maybe ill agree. (Milton Bradley doesn’t count, he’s insane an always has been). But until then, who cares, let the dopes/drunks say “boooooo”. If it spoils your enjoyment for the game, well that sucks for you but it shouldn’t.

Also, i think i overreacted to tj3117 who, it sounds like, didn’t boo himself, just defended the concept.

I chose not to boo, I just bit holes through my tongue. I did, however, ask the ice crew girl at the entrance to my section if she might arrange a meeting with Cam Barker for me so that I could express my displeasure to him. She said she would try, and then I asked if she would give me her skirt right then and there, you know, as a souvenir. She looked at me crossly and said, “Mister? You just lost out on meeting Cameron Barker, you’ll just have to boo like the rest of them now.” Still, I didn’t. I’m just a really good guy.

Better to have loved and lost.
To Cliff – my last remark on the boo/no boo brouhaha of 2009, I’ll grant you that booing an individual performance is rarely constructive, be it Bradley, Grossman, A-Rod or Huet. It usually only further hurts their performance, so its stupid. But booing an entire team effort doesn’t have the same effect.
Its not singling out one individual, its a collective kick in the pants from 20,000 fans to 20 players. It might not help, but I really doubt it hurts. And it makes me feel good, which is what its all about.
Got more soul than a sock with a hole.

Did the booing help the comeback? Seabrook said he heard the crowd booing and said they deserved it.

I am gonna boo if they play bad. They are grown men in very physically/mentally demanding sport and I would hope they are not that emotionally frail where they have problems handling boo’s.
The start of the game was one of the most miserable starts I have EVER seen. I don’t hear booing too often, but if there was ever a time that it was justified. It was last night during that first period.

How is this a problem with netminding?
The first three goals Calgary scored were all due to turnovers or mistakes by the defensemen. Huet had no chance on the first two, and couldn’t stop Iginla on the third (not too many goalies can). Arguably, the two on Niemi could have been stopped, especially the last one.
by maxachium27 on Oct 13, 2009 9:44 AM CDT reply actions 1 recs
It's a problem in this regard
I think the Hawks this year are one of those teams that other teams are going to headhunt to measure themselves. Teams are going to come out early and aggressive and if our D has not had their pre game coffee, whoever we have in net is going to face A LOT of shots. The D has left Huet out to dry on quite a few of the goals he has given up. That said, a goalie does need to step up and deal with blown coverage once in awhile. Right now, I don’t have the confidence that Huet can deal with more than a little blown coverage by the D. It doesn’t matter what goalie is available in the market right now, we don’t have cap space to bring them here. Anyone here have a realistic idea of how to bring a top goalie while simultaneously getting rid of Huet’s cap hit? Trades involving Brouwer or Barker or not realistic.
by NKLHD on Oct 13, 2009 10:03 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
All three defense pairs palyed like crap early...
…but 5 goals in 8 shots? Better than Shaq’s FT%.
Having said that, our goaltending last year wasn’t great, and neither was Detroit’s or Pittsburgh’s.
We are not going to land a better goalie during the year. Let’s accept this and move on.

Makes me wonder
It’s a good point. I was hearing a lot of “that’s the kind of confidence booster that can carry a team throughout the season” late last night (while tipping pints with a shit eating grin), but if the problem is a mental warp causing physical absenteeism, I for one remain highly concerned. Maybe the lax defence have just reinforced to their gray-matter that they can start like that every night and count on the smoking forwards to pull them through. Goalie-schmoalie. I’m hoping this isn’t the case. There was an extremely loud lesson to take home from that game. Here’s hoping they are taking the homework assignment to heart!

I agree that the D could have done better.
Ok, a lot better, but the fact remains that when Huet is in net, the team does not look confident. Maybe I’m talking out of my ass, but I was completely behind Huet at the beginning of the season. Granted its only been 5 games, but I feel like this team looks a hell of a lot better with Neimi between the pipes.

I totally boo'd
The first period was the most disgusting display of hockey I’ve seen in my lifetime. Guys were just standing around, and I blame at least 2 of the goals on the defense. Huet sucked too, but he shouldn’t get all of the criticism. We’re going to have to go back to the tandem goalie routine. I don’t think Niemi is anywhere strong enough to have back to back starts.
Check out the WGN goal calls from last night. Pretty awesome

I suprised that Q isn't getting more heat for the play in first period
The team’s head obviously was not in the game for the first period. I’m not sure what the issue is, but this was a reoccuring problem last year as well. I’m no expert, but I feel the coach should shoulder some responsibility for ensuring his team is mentally prepared and ready for the game.

Well...that was pretty incredible wasn't it?
After being drubbed for 5 goals on the first 8 shots in the 1st period in a span of 5:29 including 3 in 53 seconds the Hawks had all the excuses in the world to just pack it in and start to prepare their post-game speeches of ‘this stuff happens in an 82-game schedule’ rhetoric. But they didn’t? Instead they responded the way Championship teams so often do and chose not to quit and reply, and reply they did resulting in the largest comeback in team history (the previous was set back in 1989 against the Jets after being down 0-4 rallied to win 7-4). The first 2 games at the UC have been as dramatic as any regular season games I can remember being in October and the fans have definitely received their money’s worth.
After Madden’s goal it was more like ‘Well…at least the Hawks didn’t get shutout", but when Kane scored it was like “alright, if we can just get one more…” then Byfuglien answered our call shortly there after (from a beautiful feed from Kane) to make it 5-3. All of a sudden it was “Imagine if we could get one more?” and one more the Hawks would receive when Bolland outbattled Phaneuf to slide a loose puck past a sprawled Kiprusoff to into an empty-net to make it 5-4. Now it was like “Could we actually do this?”
After a couple missed PP (which needs some work) opportunites the Hawks finally responded with the tying goal at the 5 minute mark of the 3rd period by tipping in Keith’s pass by Kiprusoff who’ve must of been wondering “what is happening here?”.
After a couple posts and several missed opportunities the Hawks managed to force the game into OT resulting as one person posted “the most deserving point in team history” and they could be right. For in the 21 years I’ve been a Hawks fan I’ve never seen anything quite like that.
Then it was off to OT and at the 26 second mark Seabrook picked up a bouncing puck that nobody seemed to want to touch and ripped it past Kiprusoff sending the UC crowd and any Hawks fan into instant euphoria. Down 5-0 and comeback to win 6-5 in OT has to be one of the biggest highlights in Hawks recent history.
It was one for the ages and a game with a result that many of us will never forget and with that LET’S GO HAWKS!!!
It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

Agreed
This could be one of those season defining wins.
I admit, I was starting to think about how quickly I would leave (I was giving it until 10 mins in the 3rd at most), but I also know this team has come back from 3 down several times. Madden’s goal at the end of the 1st was huge as was Niemi’s save keeping it a 5-1 game. From there, the rest was just incredible tenacity and great to see a team that never really seemed to give up.
My goal? World domination.

Antti Niemi and Uncle Huet
Both in the first period were ridiculouly terrible in the first highlighted by Niemi’s gaffe on the fifth goal which resulted in the pouring down of vented frustrated from the UC faithful and with that came the subsequent heckling afterwards – it was that bad.
But to Niemi’s credit (and he does deserve this much) he picked himself back up off the mat and made a terrific (and maybe game-changing) breakaway save on Jokinen and continued to make solid saves especially late in the 3rd when the Flames decided to make a push. With that said though, once again Niemi wasn’t really tested and after the Jokinen breakaway really didn’t see one true quality scoring chance. Question though: Did anybody notice Niemi wearing a different mask last night?
As for Huet he really didn’t have much help in front of him last night as the Hawks continued to give up quality opportunities one after the other. The first goal was a direct result of bad defensive posture as Boyd was left all alone in the slot and ripped by a helpless Huet and the second was really no different with Campbell providing a beautiful screen, unfortunately it was on his own goaltender with Nystrom slipping it by Huet, who could’ve been better but was not entirely at fault. The 3rd goal was a result of a bad bounce in the neutral zone which turned Keith around and landed right on Iginla’s stick resulting in a breakaway. 2-time 50 goal scorer Iginla on a breakaway…how many netminders stop that? Not many as he made Huet look absolutely foolish sniping it between the legs and right at that was the end of Huet’s night. It wasn’t for his play as much as it was for the team’s play at the time.
As for who should be the starter Wednesday night against the Oilers? Niemi, for the reason being that it might be better to have the rookie start at home and have the veteran start on the road as opposed to vice-versa. Niemi right now is the feel good goaltender right now and as the back-up is feeling all the love for as we all know the back-up ‘can do no wrong’, not to mention that the Oilers are red-hot offensively right now and it might be better to put in the goaltender that has the more confidence in his game. Add to it that the last thing Huet needs is more pressure and a one-on-one battle against Khabibulin might just be that, as Huet has been struggling with his game and another poor performance in front of the boisterous UC crowd against Khabibulin may have his confidence steep even lower and that’s the last thing the Hawks need right now. In fact for Wednesday night’s game I wouldn’t be opposed to having Crawford called up from Rockford and having him back-up Niemi in case he fails for Huet could use the mental break and concentrate solely on his start in Nashville.
Huet is our starter until a deal is made for his replacement. Do I believe Huet will be the guy when the playoffs come calling? No, I think a deal will be put in place before the playoffs roll around with Huet unfortunately placed on waivers, and if cleared, sent directly to Rockford due to salary-cap concerns.

just for shits and giggles-- what happened to them that year?
2000-01 Blues team – ranked 4th in the West, made it to WCF
1988-89 Flames team – ranked 1st in the Campbell Conf, Stanley Cup Winners
(although that game might have been in the 89-90 season since it’s undated, in which case Flames STILL ranked top in the conference, but were a first-round exit for the playoffs)
1981-82 Kings team – ranked 8th in the Campbell Conference, actually pulled this shit off during a match against the Oilers in the first round of playoffs— too bad they were defeated in the second round by the Canucks
