Collumn Help Needed

Dear SCH readers,

I come to you looking for help.  I have started writing a column on the Hawks for Loyola's newspaper.  As of the first week, it has been called Blackhawks Down Low.  My editor came up with the name, and I'm looking for something a little more catchy to name it.  It will run weekly through the season and will basically be my way of updating students on the state of the Hawks.  Any name suggestions would be great.  Also, if anyone would please read my stuff and tear it apart and criticize me, I'd appreciate it.  I think my first week sucked because I was told to summarize the offseason and beginning of the season. That was way too much info to cover in 700 words.  But tell me everything I can improve on so that I can inform as many people as possible.  I have thick skin so don't be shy to tell me that I'm a moron and where I should shove my column (just make it constructive-ish).  Here's the

link where you can tear me a new one.

I'd also take suggestions on topics I should cover.  This week will be an analysis of Huet along with some forecasts.  I'm not sure if this will cover the full column though. All suggestions will be considered.

Thanks a lot,

Original Six

I didn’t read it.

NOW STOP IT RIGHT HERE

Good for you!

I used to go to Loyola and read the Phoenix.

Anyway – first and most important – where’s the swear words?

OK, seriously, yes, you had a lot to cover. IMO what you did wasn’t directed to either knowledgable fans or newbies to the sport, but was somewhere in-between. If I were you (which I’m not) I would focus on one or the other. Otherwise, people not knowing the game or the players will be confused, while those who follow the team at least somewhat will be less interested in not finding out more detail.

Perhaps once you start a weekly that doesn’t cover so much, it’ll fall into place better.

Good luck!

If I can't be a good example, I'll just be a horrible warning

Thanks a lot.

I do hope to go with the more narrow, knowledgeable crowd in the future.

I would try and sneak a Lord of the Rings reference

into every article.

Oh and humor and relatability

Are you at Lake Shore or Watertower? Compare Sopel’s skating to the slowness of the elevators at WT, the hits of Brouwer to the waves crashing the rocks at LS.

Still a large commuter population?

Maybe relate Skille’s drive from Rockford to the commutes of the students.

Any of the faculty look like any Hawks? Use pics for comparisons.

Actually

there is a pretty small commuting population these days. I’m living at lakeshore, but all of my business classes are at WT. Haha and I love the Skille idea. It would probably work better for the shuttle between LS and WT now.

Back when I was there

It was a HUGE commuter population.

I was in Mertz hall for 2 years, then got an apartment. Years and years and years ago.

Took some classes at WT when I was part time and I think CMUN classes were mostly based there, that was my major.

Oh wait, don’t forget, still have the wind tunnel by Damon Hall? Gotta relate that to something. :) Even worse, when I took classes at that end building with the library in it, and had to walk against the wind in winter with no barrier from the lake. Oh, the memories….

If I can't be a good example, I'll just be a horrible warning

Blackhawks Ramblings

It may sound stupid but since Loyola are the Ramblers you might get a few extra hits.

You're a moron!

You said not to be shy, just exercising my right.

I’m assuming there aren’t too many hockey die hards on campus and you’re editor wants to take advantage of the Hawks recent “Cub appeal” in Chicago. It’s a good forum for the casual fan. Nice job.

Name suggestion: Blackhawks Low Down. And I just thought of that. See what I did there? I took the words and I turned the on their side and mixed them up and…………….ah, never mind.
