Defending Troy Brouwer

McClure and I were at the bar last night (how many of these fucking entries begin that way?) discussing a phenomena that has us both stumped.  After commenting yesterday how impressed I've been with Troy Brouwer's play this year -- and then speculating when it comes time to make a move that Brouwer's play makes Buff more expendable, along with Aliu and Beach in the pipeline -- people are still criticizing Brouwer.  Let's clear a couple things up here.  First of all, if you're criticizing Brouwer this season, then you haven't watched any games.  Oh sure, you may look at them, maybe even think you're watching it, but you're not.   Brouwer is doing everything right this season.  He's been physical, even more physical than Byfuglien.  He also kills penalties and has been quite good at that.  He is always in the right spot, and will eventually be rewarded for that.

That does not mean I'm actively advocating moving Buff.  However, if the Hawks think they need to add a piece -- say a #6 d-man or new goalie -- someone's got to go.  Secondly, someone's got to go to clear space for Cap Apocalypse in the summer anyway.  Of the three most likely -- Buff, Barker, and Versteeg -- Buff is the most replaceable.  It's funny, for months last season Buff was the whipping boy around here.  Then he has one good playoff series (and only one as he didn't do much against either Calgary or Detroit) and suddenly he's a hero.  Since the opening two games of the season, Buff has done jack and shit this year.  You have to get cheaper somewhere, and here's one place you can.  Not only would Brouwer have no problem getting to the front of the net as Buff does, but he'd do it quicker.  He's more responsible in his own zone, and isn't nullified when playing speedier teams like Detroit.

Versteeg is the only one other than Kane who's a straight-up playmaker.  Barker runs one of the power play units.  We don't have anyone else to do those things when they go.  We have replacements for Buff.  This is my point, dude.

problem is

brouwer cant put a puck into an empty net…buff so far has capatilized on his chances

thats the difference

but yes, brouwer has been playing his ass off

by sec. 317 on Oct 20, 2009 11:58 AM CDT reply actions

you've got to work with what you've got

and brouwer has a smaller cap hit than buff. Can you honestly say you’d rather keep Buff and lose one of the big three because Brouwer can’t finish his chances?

by chiblackhawks on Oct 20, 2009 1:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Brouwer has been much improved this year

Notice he has been a lot more physical this year and his positioning has been great too which should lead to an increase in goals this year, however his role on this team isnt too score goals but to rather be a physical presence which he has fulfilled so far

Lets Go Hawks!

then...

if were commenting on how great his positioning is, he ought to be criticized for his lack of scoring….ill agree hes there for physical presence…but if he has an opportunity to put a puck my 5 year old niece can bank, i expect him to score

Ya, but why do you want to get rid of Buff so badly?

what about Bolland?

while i can argue that i’m one of the bigger fans of Fabulous Weapon, i’m trying to release my emotional love, and realistically asses who goes, who stays…

I’ll let you know Wednesday, because if he’s not in that lineup, i’m officially worried

Given the term of Bolland’s deal, and that it was just signed last year, it’s clear he’s in the long-term plans. I would be floored if he were moved.

Poppycock

Brouwer had 41 and 35 goals for Rockford a couple years ago. Ya it’s the AHL, but you don’t score that many goals by accident. The goals will come, he’s not totally inept. Factor in everything else he does better than Buff, and his cheaper contract, and I say he should stay.

by HawksFTW on Oct 20, 2009 12:34 PM CDT reply actions

I was about to post the same thing...

I was lucky enough to be front row for most games of the 41 goal season (which was in Norfolk not lame-o Rockford). He was a beast in the “A”, and I think after a full NHL season, he is really finding himself.

Also, that idiot, Jesse Rogers at ESPN Chicago said today that: “Ebbett, Fraser, and Brouwer are on short leashes”. WHAT!!! Brouwer? I don’t think he even watches the games, honestly

Ebbett’s on a short leash? What, did he dent Quenneville’s car in the parking lot? He hasn’t played a game yet.

If Sharp keeps on this pace, it will be almost impossible to get equal value in return, particularly given his contract. Patrick Sharp is one of the best values in hockey at the moment, contract vs. production.

I don't know

If what Buff does is going to be replaceable by Brouwer. Buff has quite a bit of height and size, and his posistioning in front of the net on the PP have been fantastic this year. It’s as if he’s been watching tapes of Assholmstrom. Buff has been there to pick up the garbage, and already has 4 goals on the season, which extrapolates (big words, right?) out to a 40-goal campaign. I don’t think Buff is going to get 40 goals, but you see what I’m saying?

T-Brouw is playing awesome. If we are going to move somebody, I think Kopecky needs to be considered. His contract is more movable than Buffs anyways. It doesn’t solve all the $$$ problems, but it’s a start.

by AirTrafficAJ on Oct 20, 2009 1:02 PM CDT reply actions

the Kopecky issue

I have made many a joke about this situation, but in all seriousness, what are the Hossa related reprocussions of trading Kopecky? I understand that hockey is a business and Hossa would need to come to grips with this, but it really seems like the two players came as a package deal. Would Hossa not be willing to put everything into an organization that he doesn’t trust?

I could be overthinking this, maybe Hossa would be dissappointed but he’d still be the player we expect. The fragile nature of superstar athletes concerns me in this situation.

Thing with that, though, is that it’s a small contract for a role player. It won’t save us much and we’d be getting the exact same thing in return. Unless someone becomes available that Bowman has had his eyes on, I don’t see the positives.

by ChicoMaki on Oct 20, 2009 1:39 PM CDT up reply actions

3 points on Buff vs. Brouwer (and how it's a good thing)

1. There sure are a lot of “eventually be rewarded” and “goals WILL come” comments on Brouwer. Simple stat—Buff’s goals are already coming.

2. “Oh sure, you may look at them, maybe even think you’re watching it, but you’re not.” So someone with a different view of a player’s performance is apparently an idiot? Unaware? Please…you’re better than to just dismiss us like this.

3. When is the last time we were arguing/debating/discussing over who the Hawks should keep and there were SO MANY good choices? It’s a good thing! Brouwer has been all over the ice so far. Buff is playing to his potential. Kane looks great. Madden is ridiculous. And on and on it goes. In spite of McD and the rest of the off-ice nonsense, it’s FUN to be a Blackhawks fan right now!

by Preacher000 on Oct 20, 2009 1:08 PM CDT reply actions

But Brouwer has been all over the ice, like you say. He’s been playing remarkably well. I don’t myself see how anyone could argue with his good play this year. Hence, they haven’t been watching games closely … or at least his play during the games.

Wouldn’t surprise me if this was at least a little part of it. It’s a big game, Niemi has been better so far. I doubt this means much for the long haul, and Huet will be back very soon—and as the number 1—but I think it’s the right call for Vancouver.

by ChicoMaki on Oct 20, 2009 1:44 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm still a Huet supporter

but it’s probably for the best that the home crowd doesn’t see him for a while. He can get his game together on the road.

Although I do worry about Niemi’s performance come Wednesday. Vancouver will be out for blood, both because of playoffs, and then again because they’re looking to get their first road win of the season. If he loses, who would the so-called fans want for goal next?

Now they're just makin' shit up

This from Kuc’s blog re: Niemi starting Wed: “Huet, who is 2-2-1 wit a 3.25 goals-against and .844 save percentage, struggled against the Stars, allowing a unobstructed shot from outside the blue line to beat him and later had a bouncing puck off a dump-in get by him for Dallas’ winning goal.”
O.K., I generally think Kuc is fairly competent, but was I watching the game in some alternate reality? When did this “unobstructed shot from outside the blue line” that became a goal happen? And a 90 degree defelction off the glass partition is a little bit different than just a “bouncing puck off a dump in”.
It’s this kind of crap that all the dum-dum’s out there read, develop ill informed opinions from, and then bring that disinformation to the UC and poison the atmosphere with there ridiculous booing and cat-calls.
I’m really starting to get pissed with all the Huet bashing. As stated elsewhere, cover the TEAM!

Haven’t heard boo about that this year, and Brouwer is a big part of the reason. If he goes, it will create a problem against physical teams.

Still concerned

Cliff I agree that Brouwer is a big reason the Hawks have been physical when they need to be, but I am still concerned that our defense isn’t physical enough with Walker gone. I’d like to see the Hawks bring in a big body and pair him with Campbell and put Hammer with Barker. It doesn’t have to happen right away but I think we need to be more physical in the back come playoff time.

by Scott13 on Oct 20, 2009 8:08 PM CDT up reply actions

revisiting a bad experiment

If you’re talking about bringing in a “Matt Walker type” to pair with campbell, we’ve seen that experiment before. Campbell’s worst play last season came while skating with Matt Walker, Hammer came in and Campbell was great in late spring and into the playoffs.

Matt Walker was a physical presence next to campbell, but he wasn’t positionally sound enough to cover for him. The top two defensive pairings are fine the way they are, the third one needs to be evaluated without screwing up the other two, and by evaluated I mean Hendry vs. Sopel and Keeping Barker vs. trading him for cap space.

re: T-Bone

now that he got that first goal out of the way I believe that the “ohmygod ohmygod ohmygod ohmygod ohmygod, oh shit SHIT SHIT SHIT” mindset will start to lesson now that (in theory) the pressure of the getting the first goal will have subsided. As long as he keeps trying to put opposing players through the glass and score the occasional goal, I say keep him up with the big club.

Agree/Disagree

Agree – that Brouwer has been very noticeable this season, especially since they got back to North America. He’s just been all over the ice and an important physical presence.

Agree – that trading a forward to upgrade at defense or net is probably both inevitable and a good idea.

Disagree – that Brouwer can fill the role that Buff fills. Right now he’s filling the role that Burish and Eager filled, and doing it well. He hits everything in sight, he puts good offensive pressure by keeping the puck pinned deep (even if he doesn’t display the skillful offensive moves), and he’s willing to drop the gloves for his team. Can he do all that and be a disruptive presence in front of the net? I guess, but it’s a lot to ask out of one guy. Right now he’s excelling in the role he’s filling, let’s see more of that.

Disagree – that Buff hasn’t done shit since his first two games. First of all there was the rebound goal he cleaned up after providing the screen the other night. And in the Calgary comeback game he was parked in front of the net all night and when the defense swarmed him after the whistle he was big and aggressive enough to take on Flames two at a time. It’s a subtle physical attribute that doesn’t show up on the score sheet, but after the whistle deep in the zone the defense has the physical advantage as their five skaters can get in the face of the three forwards, and if our defenders come in deep the face off gets moved outside the zone. Nobody does that post-whistle drive the other team crazy part as well as Buff and if we’re going to give Brouwer credit (deservedly so) for the little things we should do the same for Buff.

Agree – with your thought process on moving Buff before moving VERSTEEG! or Barker. Despite standing up for Buff above, you’re right that he’s more expendable than the other two. Stupid cap. I hate the salary cap more than the Blues.

buff

i think this is my biggest “disagree” with Sam. Aside from the what you already said about the post-whistle antagonization, Buff makes room for people on the ice…not to mention the fact that when he has the puck he’s shown better hands and way better presence of mind in the o-zone. Versteeg is definitely the one who should go and also the one who will get us the highest return. Just makes more sense.

by Kevin Kujawa on Oct 21, 2009 9:54 AM CDT up reply actions

On Brouwer

Never thought I’d see the day that I would be acknowledging Brouwer on his play, but I’m glad I can. Last season Brouwer became my ultimate lightning rod of criticism for his lack of finish, speed, tenacity, and whatever I could think of for he really didn’t look prepared for the NHL and what it took to succeed at this level. Wow, what a difference a year can make.
Not only is his energy level been cranked up but so has preparation level and understanding the importance of his role on this team. Last season Brouwer when taken off the top line his overall effort seemed to drop a little and not give a full effort at times that often left me frustrated with him as player, but this season it seems to not matter where Brouwer has been plugged in the line-up he excepts the role and raises his level depending on how the Hawks need him on that particular shift. It has been quite an evolution process for Brouwer.
And with that has come the most important thing that has helped Brouwer’s game-confidence. It can be a fragile thing when it comes to professional athlete’s as we have taked about it at nauseam when concerning Huet. But isn’t it as important to a forward? Just watching Brouwer this season you can see that he a much more of a confident player especially when it comes to the way he handles the puck in traffic areas and along the boards. No longer does he just throw the puck blindly when a long the boards, somtimes handling it like a time bomb, now he holds the puck a little longer and looks for the open man something you would’ve never seen from Brouwer at any point last season. Not to mention often being paired on the line with Ladd and Madden has done a lot in terms in gaining confidence as well.
Brouwer is contributing in all aspects of his game and hopefully this is only just ‘the tip of the iceburg’ when it comes to achieving his full potential.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!
