Power Rankings - Week 3: We're #4! We're #4!

It's the start of the new week and the Hawks haven't played yet - so lets take a look around all the other sites and see what other people are thinking of the Blackhawks so far.

SBN Power Rankings - 1st in the Western Conference but only 4th overall.

The Hockey News -  4th overall and the comment only mentions Huet's major mistake on the dump-in.. this might be a theme.

NHL FanHouse - 4th overall once again - thankfully no mention of Huet.

TSN - 15th overall... the fuck?  TSN isn't sold on the Hawks goalies but even still this is an obscenely low rating.

NHL.com - 4th overall once again

ESPN - 10th overall - Questions about Huet cause them to drop.. but since when does ESPN know anything about hockey?

Looking at the league-wide stats - the Hawks are near the top in just about everything other than the power play and goals against.  The only area that's troubling though is when you compare shots against/game with goals against.  Please don't take this as another invitation for a Huet flame-war though.. it's just an observation..

Points:  Tied for 3rd with 3 others (11)
Goals For:  Tied for 5th with 2 others (28)
Goals Against:  Tied for 16th with 3 others (22)
Shots/Game:  3rd (35.9)
Shots Against/Game:  1st (20.8)
Faceoffs:  2nd (55.4%)
Power Play: 13th (23.3%)
Penalty Kill: 5th (85.7%)

The goals against stat doesn't look good for Huet...

…and I can’t say that I’m not concerned about him long-term. However, the shots against stat is significant to show just how deep this team is. For all the attention the squad gets for its youth and offense and the overwhelming SOG domination, the secret strength of this team is that they know how to shut shit down. Biscuit has been completely ridiculous so far, and it seems that Madden and company are going to give other teams fits all year.

Goalie dilemma be damned! If the Hawks can post more chances per game and continue to lead the league in shots against, we’ll be fine for the long haul.

Ryan, I’d like to agree, because I’ve spent most of my time this year telling everyone to chill on Huet. Buuuuuuuuuut, he’s not only looked like a total child, he’s hitting us hard in the cap dept. and there seems to be no real good solution to it (sending him down solves nothing, nobody is going to take him in a trade). It sucks that there’s no way to refute the arguments against him, because I’m sick of them as well. Eventually, this will become a bigger issue for the team than just some crying on the boards and on here.

the preview for tonight’s game. it doesn’t even make logical sense. the canucks feel good about their chances because they have played terribly recently and they’re pretty banged up? then, about 3/4 of the way through it briefly mentions the fact that we eliminated those bozos from the playoffs, but only AFTER it talks about Luongo’s (who is doing my fantasy team NO favors) shutout last march.

I hate power rankings

You’d think as much as this country HATES the idiots who make our college football and basketball polls, they wouldn’t clamor for more. Yet, these power rankings have popped up on every sports site on da internetz. All they really serve to do is give idiots like Tony Kornholer something to yell about on ESPN in the afternoon.

That said, I think TSN is still pissed over the Calgary game.

The Power-less rankings

TSN is another Canadian hockey outlet that thinks goaltending is everything like it’s 2003 every year. It’s absolutely sickening! They basically drool over Kiprusoff and Luongo like their Jenna Jameson and Pamela Anderson at a clothing optional party, yet neither has done anything worth remembering in like 6 years.
It’s always goaltending, yet in the end it was Osgood and Fleury 2 netminders vilified by TSN all season long so for that the Hawks should feel privileged not slighted. Their power rankings are about as logical as turning down a late night fuck from Megan Fox…you just look at them and think to yourself are you fucking drunk?
The Oilers are ahead of us hmm…didn’t we just beat those guys with them only having 10 shots through 2 periods?

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

The Huet Situation

A lot of us have been taking stabs at solving the problems in net that have been plagueing the Hawks this season. I personally think that Huet might turn it around if we give him enough time….

On the other hand, I’ve been mulling over a hypothetical goalie trade and wanted to know what you guys thought….

This might not be acceptable to all parties but the Hawks might benefit from a trade for Jonas Hiller
He’s been solid (2.67, .921) for the greater part of this year, and was strong last year as well. He’s cheap, too, pulling in about 1.3 mil. If we can find a way to unload Huet’s contract (5.65 mil), that would be a net cap free-up of over 4 million, which would make things a littler easier come doomsday at the end of this season. My thoughts are trade Huet and a forward, (i.e. Skille, or whoever.) for Hiller, and maybe a draft pick.

Any thoughts?

by chelseadagger16 on Oct 20, 2009 11:46 PM CDT reply actions

Ducks would never do this

Jonas Hiller is the goaltender of their future and there is no way they part with him unless the Hawks really knocked their socks off, but that isn’t going to happen. There is also no way Bob Murray, the GM of Anaheim, takes on Huet’s contract with Giguere already slated to make $6 million this season and next so there goes the possibility of that ever happening.
The only netminder from Anaheim the Hawks get their hands on is Giguere and that could potentially become a reality but nothing happens with the Hawks goaltending situation until late February after the Olympic break.
If Huet continues his struggles all season long (like Richter in 1995) then the Hawks may be forced to deal for another netminder, but if they are it will be to significantly improve that position and Giguere (2003 Conn Smythe and 2007 Stanley Cup winner) is the only netminder out there that, potentially, that would do that.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

I got better ideas for you

Why don’t we try and get Steve Mason from Columbus? Or Semyon Varlamov from the Caps? They’re decent, and yeah, I think they’d do us both the favor of unloading Huet’s caps from our books AND getting the one forward who we couldn’t fit on our roster.

While you’re at it, Megan Fox is knocking at your door. She says it’s time for some lovin’.

Two, two, two rankings in one

How can Chicago be behind Colorado in the overall SBN rankings but ahead of them in the Western Conference SBN Rankings???

by Pancake57 on Oct 21, 2009 6:39 AM CDT reply actions

Because..

we split the duties of ranking the conferences to whichever team you represent.. but we all vote for the top 10 overall. So the average from all the Western Conference writers put the Hawks at #1… but when the Eastern Conference votes are included in the top 10.. we drop down behind the Avs. Kinda weird but not a big deal

GAA

I haven’t crunched the numbers, but it’s gotta be a tautology that teams with the fewest shots against have a so-so GAA.

The guys facing 40 shots a game get the blood flowing in a way that’s impossible when you only see 20. Maybe the Hawks should make the goalie sweat a bit more in the pre-game shoot around.

Plus, it seems to me the Hawks puck posession strategy contributes to this. D-men make high risk passes in their own zone rahter than dumping the puck to center. It’s a calculated risk and, on balance, a good one, especially for hockey geniuses like Dunc, but it does lead to the occassional great chance for the oppostiion.

I guess playing goalie for a team like this requires a different skill set. Rather than a Steady Eddy, we need a guy who may give up the easy goal from time to time but make some great saves.

Prior to this year, it seems that Huey was just this kind of goalie.

Is it just me...

or does the game tonight vs. VAN feel like it may have some physical revenge factor. I know that everyone is worried about our goalie controversy, but for the most part in all but one of the games the Hawks have been able to skate around in the offensive zone without any repercussions. It just seems like this team is really going to need to get Ben Eager back in the lineup. This has become more of a finesse team (and don’t miscontrue that as not being tough, the Hawks work the boards as hard as anyone else), and it just seems like sooner or later a team is going to come into town with more on their mind than just winning the game.

Agree on that

Canuckleheads will be coming out banging. Hawks haven’t yet faced a team with a big physical presence. Good news is that with Sedin, Salo and Rypien out, the Canucks are a bit undermanned themselves. This is a good test for Hawks.

by The Fearless Freep on Oct 21, 2009 10:52 AM CDT up reply actions

I seem to recall that at the Convention

Seabrook made the comment that they have this game circled for a revenge game for the Burrows Hair Pulling incident. Vancouver may want revenge foir the playoffs but the Hawks want revenge for the end of the regular season game.

That being said, Yes Eager and Burish will be missed. Someone is going to have to take the call when it comes time to scrum

Still, the Hawks look Damn Good so far.

As October draws near to an end, fans are really starting to express their opinions about the Hawks and the future trades that might be necessary in the following months. Injuries, salaries and a huge question mark over goaltending are some of the driving factors in the minds of many of whom, including myself have not held back the slightest when expressing our opinions. I wonder if we are getting ahead of ourselves. I for one have not been quiet in my views on Huet as a professional goaltender and maybe I should have held back a touch. But the Hawks numbers look outstanding.

Simply, the Hawks are playing very well and could easily be standing on an 8-0 record so far. I for one am extremely excited about the status of the Hawks and most of the performances of the players so far. Madden has been outstanding, Kane looks like the superstar he was born to become, Keith has unprecedented abilities on the D, Seabrook and Hammer have been superb, Versteeg is playing like a man on a mission to be one of the NHL’s best, Ladd is getting more than the job done, Buf is putting pucks in the net and causing others to do the same, Sharp is leading in goals, Toews looks really good and has now broken the ice, Kopecky has made a believer out of me, and Brouwer is playing well beyond what most would have expected from him, with hopes of is game to improve statistically.

What I fear are the talks of trading Big Buf. He is a giant, has been scoring, has screened countless shots and been a pain in the ass to every team we play. I do however understand his cost to the teams salary cap, but when you compare it to that of Campbell’s and the fact that while he has looked good so far this year, he hasn’t been that amazing. Campbell should be the one on the chopping block. Versteeg is a huge ? on the Hawks roster in the coming seasons and his great play only adds to his own personal possibilities. The Hawks have made a move already in acquiring Andrew Ebbett from the Ducks. He looks like an extremely solid player with good numbers who brings up many questions. With the Hawks offense being the least of their worries, why pick up an offensive player? I would answer, to make an even bigger trade in the future and eventually free up some cash. I would guess that the Hawks are looking to create a package deal with either Huet or a defensemen in that package. This is a strategic move for the Hawks, but I look forward to watching Ebbett play as an Indian.
