Chicago Hockey Writers Turn Their Faces To The Falling Sky
Some real good stuff around today:
Tim Sassone Thinks The Hawks Might Need A Goon
This is patently ridiculous and really disheartening from a reporter who's usually so good. Let's ignore the logjam the Hawks have at forward anyway -- and that's before Hossa gets back -- and study this suggestion. How does some mouth-breathing drooler who can't move help the cause in any way? Quenneville is already struggling to roll four lines, and having someone even more useless on the 4th line would only exacerbate that. As far as the Hawks getting retribution for certain hits or protecting their stars, that's an anachronism. The Hawks get back at you by skating right by your ass and lighting up the scoreboard. Don't doubt this team's toughness. Regarding the Toews hit, it was clean. Completely. Nothing burns my ass then when a Hawks player lays someone out legally and then has to deal with a bunch of bullshit from the opponent. So I'm not going to change my opinion when it's reversed. It's an NHL-wide problem. As I said in the recap, we see Mitchell three more times this year, and there'll be plenty of dump-ins he has to chase.
Rosenbloom Declares Season Over
That's being harsh, as most of his points are pretty valid. But considering this was the first game -- out of nine, mind you -- that they've been outplayed, I don't think it's a marker for the season. I don't think this is a blueprint on how to beat the Hawks for the league. The Canucks are one of two teams in the conference, possibly three (Jackets, Flames) that can play that game effectively enough to beat the Hawks, and they still needed the Hawks to be bad to do so. The Jackets don't have the defensive corps the Canucks do or as much scoring, and the Flames...well, we all saw that.

Chicago print & talk media...
makes me embarrassed to be a fan of any Chicago team most of the time. They serve up these stories to basically justify the mouthbreather’s fucking rediculous viewpoints. I understand that their job is to write “compelling & thought provoking” stories, it’s the fact that there are obviously so many completely clueless and idiotic fans out there to cater to who are stating their dumbass opinions to anyone who will listen.
I’m at the point now that if I’m listening to talk radio or watching the news and the Hawks come up I immediately turn that shit off. Ok, end of my rant.
Rosenberg is annoying...
…and his main thesis is wrong. The Nucks did not get the Hawks out of their game. They played good hockey and beat the Hawks. This will happen sometimes, particularly with good teams.
And I don’t know what to make of this stray comment:
“It’s both mind-boggling and somewhat reassuring that the Hawks are a first-place team. "
…other than that Rosie has a mind that is easily boggled.
Rosenberg is a tool
If this guy knew anything about hockey he would know that the Pens won the Cup last year, and that they didn’t look all that hot in October and November,it was after the all star break that they turned up the juice….do the Hawks have problems?yeah, they do,but i think they have more than enough time to address them….lets not forget they are without a top 6 forward named Marian Hossa,i like to panick a bit too,but i’ll only panic if hossa comes back from the injury and this team isn’t any better, till then,i’ll give the hawks the benefit of the doubt
Yeah.
Since Hossa is replacing Havlat, and is out, we are effectively missing our leading scorer, experiencing goaltending issues, and have had a lackluster power play.
And we’re 5-3-1, blowing a 3rd period lead to prevent us from being 6-2-1.
I know I’m a broken record, but I just don’t get the angst everyone has. It’s early. We’re in good shape. Relax.
Got more soul than a sock with a hole.

chrome
the voice of reason. I’m with ya. If you sound like a broken record it’s only because of the relentless naysayers.
"Call Detroit, tell dem... BULLSHIT!"
Perhaps I deserve a lashing or two
Something about yesterday’s game left me utterly frustrated. Toews and Seabrook getting hurt were rotten apples on my turd sundae. Needless to say, I feel better today.

Think some people tend to forget...
that the Hawks were 1-3-3 at the start of last season. So 5-3-1 is a much better start and probably the best start in October this franchise has had in a while.
It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!
I'm not worried
They have what it takes and then some. They just need to get their shit together. And they’ve shown us many times they can do that.
If I can't be a good example, I'll just be a horrible warning
Chicago media lacks a credible hockey voice
The demise of the Blackhawks over the 15 years preceding last year led to the demise of good hockey reporting in this town. There is nobody in the Chicago print media or sports radio worth beans in this department.
"Cubs will win 79 to 83 games." BLou (7/21/09)
The Hawks have issues to work through
The Western Conference has a good degree of parity and depth. It’s natural therefore that 2009-10 is probably going to be tougher than last season for these Hawks, especially when you factor in the relative good health this team had in 08-09.

A goon?
Where were the goons when the Wings were skating and hustling there way to Stanley cups?Stupid statement Tim.When Hossa is back he will be back-pedeling on those statements. All is well GO HAWKS!!!!
goons
Wings were able to use guys who could score and provide some muscle. The Hawks don’t need a goon. They need Ben Eager, or a like-muscled person to play that role. I hate Darren McCarty from the wings, but he filled that role pretty well and put a biscuit in the basket from time to time.
No goon, just a guy who has some grit. Which if memory serves me in the Rockford/IR pool we have.
Andrew Ebbett
Guy played in ann Arbor when I went to Michigan State, the stats on him are very overrated.
Scored against the Alaska-Fairbanks, Bowling Green, Nebraska-Omaha types and rarely against the Michigan State, Notre Dame, Northern Michigan, Championship caliber East Coast Schools.
He is great against sub-par talent at a college level, and padded his stats that way.
Drop the gloves, he will not, and if he does it could look worse than hugging match we all saw at the UC last night ( I love VERSTEEG!, but never want to ever see him fight, his bravery is a big plus)
he took a run...
at jeff lerg (5’6), the goalie for MSU, he has grit and guts againt smaller weaker guys, bottom line this guy will bring nothing to the table…
My dad taught me three thing at my first hockey game at age 5:
Always buy the Blue Line..
Dino [Ciccarelli] is a queen-o
Detroit Sucks!!
Anyone watch Chicago Tribune Live earlier this evening?
Some of the nonsense that was being spouted on that show…sheesh.
David Kaplan declared that there was no way the Hawks would win the Stanley Cup with Huet as their goalie, and that they needed to trade for a better one. Teddy Greenstein was the voice of reason: “And where are they going to get this top-of-the-line goalie? What team is going to trade a guy like that?”
Kaplan said, “They’d have to make an offer that team couldn’t refuse.”
Greenstein was almost rolling his eyes. Kaplan really sounded like some of the idiots who come up with those “let’s trade these crappy guys on our team for that awesome guy on the other team” kind of trades.
That ball hit deep! Way back! You can put it on the boooaaaard...YES!
Long drive into deep right center field! This ball is OUTTA HEEERRRREE!

I can't stand
Dave Kaplan. He’s like that all the time. I’d like to know who he sucked off to get that job?

Kaplans head is (and always will be) in hendrys lap.
these douches are getting paid to fill air time. nothing really more. sometimes kuc is on the tribune live show and he can talk some hockey but the hot air coming our of the other idiots in the room always is too much to bear. Greenstein is okay although all he seemingly knows anything about is college and golf.
this is the town that gave jay mariotti a name. remember that.
"...can i have a glass of whiskey and a slice of bread?"
Doesn't Kaplan
do play by play for college basketball?and this guy is gonna tell me a thing or 2 about the NHL and the Hawks??gimme a beak!!!What an idiot…..I’m still a Huet believer, and a Hawks believer, just have to give it some time, thats all….Kaplan is a deuche
issue is...
these Kaplan’s of the world really didn’t follow Hockey in Chicago untill the rise of the Hawks so they are only shooting their mouth to make a statement that people want to here, but they are not thinking of the logic and reality of the NHL. They use the same aspect of football and baseball. Its alot different in Hockey.
Diverting anger from the goalie sitch...
….to the local media coverage idiocy is a healthy step.
I’m gonna go out on a limb and predict a continuous stream of useful fodder from this direction throughout the year. If the Hawks make a run for the Cup, it’ll become comically obscene, and set the stage for some seriously entertaining out-and-out fisking.
The thought of someone that would be willing to drop the gloves game in and game out is very appealing to me, because I like seeing grown men punch each other in the face. However when you bring someone like that on chances are they are not going to be productive in any other areas. I don’t think the hawks can afford that crutch on any of thier lines. Especially the 4th line which is not playing well.
I say we make sopel fight. Better him than versteeg. Sopel also really can’t get any uglier if he takes a few shots in the face either.
As far as roosenbloom…I didn’t read it because I don’t really care what he has to say.
Pain is a good reminder you are alive

I think there is a middle ground
I do agree that us alpha men like seeing other alpha men beat each other up. I cannot deny a passion to see players with the attitudes of Dave Manson, Wayne Van Dorp, Mike Peluso and Stu Grimson make a return to our team.
Sadly, that era of hockey has all but been outlawed. And apparently, even attempts to strike back in retaliation for vicious hits (clean or not) are quickly and sometimes disproportionately put down by the officials. They loosen up a little in the post-season, but not much.
However, I think the issue of “toughness” in the case of the Hawks lies not in a reincarnation of the Grim Reaper and the willingness to drop the gloves. Rather, it lies in the ability to win the puck/not lose the puck on the boards. This is where both sides of the blue line show their weakness at times with the Hawks.
A return of pure goon mentality is more likely to spawn endless stretches of penalty kills, which in the final analysis of the Nucks game, is likely the single biggest reason why the Hawks lost, and not being penalized may even be a silent but significant contributor to our successes this year.
