Couple notes today:

-Seabrook was on the ice, Toews wasn't.  No surprise there, as Toews concussion had to be the worse of the two.  Tazer certainly won't be playing tomorrow.  Jake Dowell will be on the shuttle, which is just fine, he's looked ok.  But would someone covering the Hawks ask why Hossa isn't on LTIR?  PLEASE?  PRETTY PLEASE WITH SUGAR ON TOP?  This Rockford shuttle thing has deprived Skille and Dowell of practice time with the big club, which can only help.  We'd like answers.

-Speaking of Hossa, he practiced with the team for the first time today, save contact drills.  Do you sometimes forget that Hossa is going to join up with the team in a month?  It's kind of scary.

-Our Power Play still sucks.

-Finally, I've gotten a couple emails complaining about the atmosphere at the UC after Monday, and several this season.  On one level, this is pretty hilarious because I have no power to change it, but thanks for thinking I do.  Anyway, most of the fear comes from the fear of the UC turning into Wrigley-West.  Let's all remove our tin foil White Sox hat for a sec and ask ourselves, "Why is that so bad?"  Wrigley is a wonderful place to watch a game, not necessarily play one.  It's full every day.  Aside from the bleachers, almost everyone is intently watching the game.  Don't tell me Cubs fans don't pay attention when a succession of players and managers have been booed out of town here.  Cubs fans have to pay a price for the perception of the bleacher creatures, which is slightly unfair.  Don't even for a second try and tell me that everyone at the Comiskey Bullpen Bar of party deck is highly involved either.

Look, we can't have it both ways.  The building won't be filled with 20k of passionate, knowledgeable hockey fans every night.  It never was.  It never will be.  Outside of Canada, there isn't a building that would be.  The "w" flags?  That's not a McDonough production.  That's just people on their own.  Intermission and stoppage entertainment?  We may not like it, but there isn't an arena anywhere that isn't doing it.  You don't like the intermission stuff, do what McClure and I do and go have a smoke and fight with each other.

Moreover, do not judge the atmosphere by games in October.  I was at the Old Stadium lots, and Game 1 against Calgary or Games 4 and 6 against Vancouver were as loud as anything I heard there.  We really need to calm down about everything that's going on off the ice with the Hawks. I know it's jarring, it's all happened at breakneck speed.  It was two years ago only that I was walking up and getting tickets on a visit home from Los Angeles.  Think about that, TWO YEARS.  So please, in the words of Richard Pryor through Eddie Murphy, have a coke and a smile and.....

You're asking a Hawk beat reporter

to ask an investigative question about something OTHER than Huet, and/or the Hawks’ come back from oblivion? Sam, that’s just not possible. Since they have a giant wheel they spin during editorial meetings with those two topics on it…it’s the law of averages, really, it actually can’t get more investigative than that.

I ask you to observe exhibit A:
Rosendouche and his inability to write about anything OTHER than Huet.

He may not be a Hawk beat reporter in particular, but this is like his 27th blog about Huet. It’s incredibly pathetic…not that any of us are surprised.

It's what Chicago sports writers do

They look for what is widely seen as the highest proflie weak link on a team and pound it until the “casual” fans take what they’re saying as Gospel. From there, those casual fans jump on every mistake a player makes as a sign the sports writer was right. See: Rex Grossman, Milton Bradley, Magglio Ordonez, Ben Gordon, Tyrus Thomas, etc.

Hey Hawkvision

do you have a youtube or link to the audio of your signature? Love old foley highlights

by SLoop on Oct 28, 2009 12:26 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't have audio for it, unfortunately

It was from the ‘97 playoffs against the Avalanche. During the goal-review happy times of the mid-to-late-90s when the crease was still a giant blue bubble and pretty much any goal that had so much as one player near the goalie was reviewed because of a possible ’skate in the crease’.

Colorado scored a meaningless late goal in game four, and soon after the goal, that convo was started. And that goal was actually waived off. I miss Tallon’s candidness in the booth.

Pat Foley Rips Alexander Karpovtsev During Hockey Game

An interesting comment

I found in the comment section of that vid, by tboudr5803

This is why everyone loves Pat Foley. I heard him speak at the 2009 Blackhawk Convention, and he is truly one of Chicago’s own treasures.

One good thing came of the Karpotsev debacle: the Hawks dumped him to the Islanders in exchange for NY’s 2005 4th round draft choice, which turned out to be Niklas Hjalmarsson.

It's a mixed thing...just my opinion

Maybe it’s generational. Those that grew up with Lloyd Petitt swear by him as the greatest announcer not just of the Hawks but of Hockey in general, especially if you heard him on the radio during the glory years.

The flip side is, younger fans will say that Foley, and of course the Foley/Tallon tandem can’t be beat.

Personally, I think people have mixed experiences with the Foley from the 80s and early 90s versus the Foley of the later 90s and his second tour with the team now.

I enjoy Weideman on radio and find he has a lot of the enthusiasm we all heard in the younger Pat Foley. You can’t really go wrong with Foley, especially when you compare him to what you had in Kelly in the years Foley did the Wolves games.

Same here

As much as I hate to, I end up reading stupid comments from idiots, mainly about fights that Buff has been in, most of which had a guy calling him a pussy for not fighting bigger people. My immediate thought was that anyone smaller than him stupid enough to fight deserves to get rocked, and even in the “fair” fights, buff did a damn good job.

Let’s also not forget that a lot of the less-than-desirable fans coming to some of these games are buying tickets off of season ticket holders who understand that if they sell off a few games early in the season when they are less important (maybe less hotly contested is a better term, as two points are on the line in every game), they can help pay for the expense the rest of the season’s tickets. It probably was less common last year, because the Hawks just weren’t a hot enough commodity that you could find someone to buy your tickets for a midweek game against the Predators for more than face value. This might help to explain some of the more irritating trends, like booing Huet. As Sam mentioned in the Indian one night, people are paying to come to maybe one or two games, and they expect to be entertained, not to follow and be a genuine fan of the team. Perhaps it’s leading to the "I paid my money so I deserve to be pissed" syndrome that makes people think of the Wrigley atmosphere.
I started to notice it in my section especially during the Calgary series in the playoffs, where people realized if they sold a game or two of those tickets at ridiculous prices, they could afford the rest of the playoffs a little easier. When it comes to Hawks tickets now, it’s a seller’s market. If you are looking for single game tickets, it’s not easy to find more than one ticket together (at least for the couple games I was looking for tickets for when I had friends coming in- used "for" enough times in a sentence to make hawks61 proud!), so if you really want to go, you’ll have to pay a little extra for someone else’s "unwanted" tickets.

I actually 'vet' the folks I sell to.

I used to have a free giveaway email list at work when I couldn’t go. It came complete with Rules of Conduct and I would hear it from my seatmates if the folks I sent were a-holes. It wen’t over very well. Now that it’s a Face Value ticket list, I still have over 70 folks lined up…
I just can’t put them up for big $ and have some douchebags in my seats, maybe that’s crazy, but I like my seatmates in the lower few rows of 326…

Stop it right here!

I heard this complaint for the first time Monday. I’ve never had this problem at any UC event, but I’d like to hear from others how bad this issue is. For example, can you see if you lean forward too?

If this is a real problem, I agree that fans should be more conscious about not leaning too far forward, but most probably are simply unaware of the issue.

Having said that, shouldn’t a properly-designed stadium account for this in its sightlines?

For example, the grade at Allstate is, I think, less steep than the UC, so there is a greater likelihood of having an obstructed sightline.

by cliffkoroll on Oct 29, 2009 9:28 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Fuckin leaners

The seats directly in front of mine (Sec. 331 Row 9) are open seats (i.e. not season ticket holders). So, there are different folks in them every game.

90% of the time these knuckleheads are on the edge of their seats leaning forward the entire game. My view of the near face off circle and corner boards is partially or entirely obscured.

And the demographic is all over the board. Young, old, male, female, it doesn’t seem to matter, they all do it.

I’ve grown so tired of having the same battle, game in and game out, trying to get these folks to sit back I’ve pretty much thrown in the towel and learned to live with it. I just do alot of leaning to the left or right to try and see what’s going on.

On the upside, this allows you to get very chummy with your neighbors. Fortunately one of them is my wife! Hopefully the guy to my left doesn’t get his hopes up, I’d hate to leave him broken hearted at the end of the season!

Thank you

The word should be got out.

I still wonder though, if “they all do it” in the seats in front of you, if it’s something to do with sightlines in certain pockets of seats, or if the problem is more widespread.

Others?

Hello.........my name is Hack.........

and I used to be a leaner. Hi Hack.

I was a leaner last year until I heard someone talk about it on this site, then I cleaned up my act. In all seriousness, when I was leaning, I didn’t think anything of it and no one at the UC ever mentioned it, but leaning obstructs anyone’s view (especially in all 200 and 300 level seats where you are looking down to the ice). It really isn’t that hard to sit up straight, I just think recognition is key. I usually don’t say anything to someone leaning in front of me, I just lean to the left or right to see around them.

This isn’t specific to certain seats in the UC either. I was at the bears bengals fiasco this weekend in cincy and the dude in front of me sat right on the edge of seat and leaned forward and it definitely blocked my view.

Thank you Second City Hockey for curing my abuse of leaning.

Unfortunately, what i hate most about Comiskey

has been duplicated in the UC. That is, the nonstop scoreboard races during. every. single. motherfucking. stoppage in play.

They are so unbearably stupid, it really takes away my enjoyment of the game. Just a few stoppages a period with some replays and organ music, that’s all I ask.

Just try it, McDonough. If attendance falls, we can do it your way.

Other than that, the rest is the price of success.

It was nice walking around the concourse the first home playoff game last year. You could just tell from the crowd in the concourse that it was going to be loud, and it would be good. And it was.

by chrome on Oct 28, 2009 1:01 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

its not about attendance...

…its about sponsorship.

yes it would be great if we could go back to those magical days when sports sponsorship didn’t exist (1880’s) or those days when management didn’t sell ad time during games (like that wonderful period in hawks history known as the late 90’s). Face it, when things get popular, people try to get rich off of that popularity.

It’s like that whole weird indie music thing, where people judge their tastes on how unknown the band the listen to is. Does it suck that there are more db’s at the games now? Yes. Would you give that up so the hawks can squander in oblivion? I wouldn’t.

As a sox fan it chaps my ass that wrigley sells out every game no matter how bad they are. But the cubs aren’t bad because people keep going to their games, they are bad despite the fact that people keep going to their games. Because a team is good, they are usually popular. There is no reverse corollary, where because a team is popular they tend to be good. Sometimes people just suck at their job. So for now, enjoy the fact that the hawks are both good AND popular.

You can mark me down in the 'anti-scoreboard' column.

Although, in fairness to the soulless corporate cocksucker ruining my hawks experience now, nothing is as bad as the Lasalle ‘race’ they had at Comiskey a couple years ago.

Cartoons would run around the bases, stopping each time to withdrawal money at the ATM.

I believe there is a direct correlation between this scoreboard race and the collapse of the financial system. Because they fucking gave mortgages to the dickslaps who bet on those races.

I don’t really mind them, there is only 3 I think, the game I went to this year (Dallas :( ) I ended up getting 3 things of gummy bears and 3 things of lemon heads, and my parents got 2 things of gummy worms and 2 things of lemon heads as well at the home opener. As long as I get free candy to eat while drinking watching the next large chunk of games at home, I’m okay.

The only real change I would like is to get rid of the stupid puck toss, and just do two shooting events during the intermissions. Along with that, rather than doing one boob girl, a dude, and a kid, I say they just make it three boob girls with a MAXIMUM on clothing.

As a Cubs fan...

…I acknowledge that I prefer the company of White Sox fans, though they have this weird Second City Squared mentelity, even more deformed than your typical Chicago fan.

Fans at the beer garden are annoying, but they also trigger a smug feeling of superioity in true fans, so that’s not so bad.

Like swallows to Capistrano, all good teams will attract this annoying, but smugness-inducing, element.

I’m sure close observers of the White Sox will have noticed something like this from all their new “fans”, not that I really care personally what goes on at the Smell.

Ditto local media coverage. Of course, this is more excruciating for a “niche” sport like hockey, where the gulf between mass appeal and what’s really going on is ginormous.

So, it’s inevitable, and if the Hawks continue their success, it’ll get worse, but it ain’t so hard to deal with.

Nice touch at the end, Sam. The perspective mantra will never grow old.

Hmm...

The fact that White Sox fans laugh at the Cubs for not winning in 101 years is pretty sad considering that for 87 years they lived under the Black Sox curse for 87 years until they won it all. Not much better considering teams like the Twins, Marlins and Blue Jays have already won it twice in less of a time frame. Even the Royals and Diamondbacks (and even throw in the 94 Expos if you want) won it once so stop the “we’re better than the Cubs” shenanighans.

If you hate McDonough then that’s just your opinion but he has done nothing in my eyes that constitutes that he is bad and a plague for this franchise. All he has done is helped this once sad-sack franchise from the graveyard back into the penthouse in terms of popularity within the city of Chicago and all over the NHL and professional sports. The Hawks are relevant again and it’s fantastic to see for it wasn’t too long ago that I craved to have the Hawks actually televise a home game rather than have another organization’s T.V. crew call the game. The fact that one day the UC could rock similar to the old Stadium was nothing more than a far-fetched dream. There far too many games over the years when the other teams announcers would reminisce about the old stadium acting like history teachers if you will.

So save this anti-everything Cubs for I don’t want to hear it. If you want to I think there is a White Sox blog somewhere on SBNation. In fact if you want go to Pinstripe Alley and maybe you can get the feeling on what it’s like to blog for a baseball team that can actually win something.

so Sox fans do not have a higher baseball acumen than Cubs fans? That’s not what President Obama told me when he was mis-pronouncing half of the White Sox players’ names. He loves Comiskey Field and that DeWayne Weiss catch that saved Mike Buehrle’s no-no.

I fucking hate baseball

but if your hypothesis about empty stadiums equal cahmpionships, explain the Montreal Expos (empty, no champs) and Atlanta Braves (full stadium, multiple champs).

In all honesty, with nearly two hundred years of combined suck, I cannot imagine how anyone can grow up in the Chicagoland area and like baseball.

Expos no champs? If it wasn’t for the strike postponing the 1994 season they would’ve won easily. And later were given the best team in baseball banner which really was a slap in the face to all Expos fans. But make no mistake the Expos were by far the best team in baseball that year.

If the scoreboard races are that annoying...

…don’t ever go to a Bulls game. It’s 10x worse there.

But in all seriousness, if the added revenue from the advertising on the scoreboard races is the price we have to pay for the salary cap even staying remotely close to what it is so we can resign the big three, let’s just take it for the team.

The hawks are making far more than what the salary cap allows them to pay

Maybe I’m an asshole, but the combo of how stupid the nonstop scoreboard races with watching how many grown men are entertained by them drives me nuts.

1. I don’t think Dunkin Donuts checks if you’re actually a winner.

3. Graphics way upgraded from a year ago. When I’m really into it, I feel like I’m driving the zamboni.

4. Last year, the Dunkin’ Donuts game was a “hot potato” or “keep away” type contest. Why didn’t the first guy who got the puck just skate away with it? Why would Biggie Bagel make that last-second pass, when he could have hung on to the puck and won? Totally lacked realism. Much more realistic this year.

Cubs fans...

just keep clinging on to your “next year” mantra, and leave the Hawks out of it. The marketing is good for growing hockey in our city, but leave the “W” flags for that pack of prima donnas on Addison. We want Blackhawks’ traditions, nothing else.

This blog is supposed to be about HOCKEY. I didn’t know it was a Blackhawks blog for Cub’s fans. We all have things that divide us (politics, baseball, etc…), but we should check those differences at the door. I’m sure the authors on this site don’t want to alienate part of their readership, and readers should respect other’s opinions. The very best SBN sites emphasize creating a community. Whenever baseball is mentioned here, people end up attacking each other and feelings get bruised. So…in conclusion…baseball season ended in Chicago in June. Let’s focus on hockey.

On Toews and Seabrook

What do you guys think if we play both Nashville and Montreal without those two and let them rest for the 5 day break that the Hawks have between Montreal (Friday) and Phoenix (Thursday). I know that its already been talked about, but coming back from a concussion too quickly is very risky. We’ve dominated Nashville in both games we have played them and one dominating game was without Toews and Seabs. I would be comfortable with Q sitting them until Phoenix, until they’re absolutely sure they’re both ready.

if we're dealing with concussions

i am all for giving them as much rest as possible, 4 points in the season aren’t worth rushing anyone back. its a marathon, not a sprint.

Completely agree

with Illini and hawks
Maybe we should let Kane, Keith, Sharp and VERSTEEG take a break tomorrow too? I mean, we could just use Sopel, Hendry, Ebbett and Dowell, playing a man down and still have a chance at winning. Could be a good way to give some experience to people who will fill injury holes later on down the road.

I didn’t mean to say that those teams will be complete pushovers, but it’s definitely better to risk losing those two games without Tazer and Biscuit as opposed to rushing them back and potentially turning them into Pat Lafontaine or Eric Lindros. Concussions are a slippery slope.

hawks 61 you said it great about sox fans bashing Cubs fans at Hawks games. I mean who annointed the Sox fans the Hawks orginaization, last time I checked the hawks belonged to the city of chicago. If it wasn’t for cubs fans UC would prob. not be selling out, sooo don’t cry about cubs fans and spilling beers over them makes sox fans sound like they come from the area where sox play( getto). As for Mcdonough, if it wasn’t for him Hawks would not be all over the media and the nation. Check my spelling on this Sox fans.

Could care less about the Sox... or the Cubs.

But your spelling remains atrocious. Commas where there should be question marks, “hawks” is Hawks, “chicago” is Chicago, take the millisecond and spell “probably” (unless you meant “problem” or “Probert”… in which case there’s all kinds of issues), “cubs” & “sox” should be Cubs & Sox, and “getto” is ghetto. There’s plenty more.

I care about your spelling about as much as I care about the Cubs or the Sox, but since you asked…

I didn’t. I don’t know whether it’s because you’re new or just dense, but there’s kind of a smartassed give-and-take here. I meant it partially in jest. I do find some of the things that you post to be pretty silly; right now in particular comes to mind in thinking I’m trying to start something. And if you thought I was “starting something” with the comment, then you’re mistaken, but if I have, then fine.

Your statement of me hiding behind a computer is flawed, and you clearly don’t pay attention. Longtime readers of this blog will tell you that the three of us make ourselves very accessible, having road watches all the time, and announcing where we sit at games if you want to talk hockey – or now to beat my ass, presumably. And anyone who’s met me under any of those circumstances will confirm I’ll be glad to tell you, or anyone else, when I think you have dopey opinions then, too. So, until that point, take it easy, and learn do deal with things called “jokes” on the internet. We tell them from time to time here.

I know you haven’t figured out reply buttons yet, but most of us have figured out Google. Which can find translations for just about anything…

well..

it should be easy to translate.. but based on his previous posts it’s probably spelled wrong..

congrats hawksfan21...

go ahead and educate yourself. More peeps that spoke italian the better this world would be.

how many italian governments have collapsed since the end of WWII?

I’m pretty sure that word isn’t even a real Italian word, at least not how you spelled it. I think it’s one of those words that were made up when all the Italians emmigrated here and slangly spoke Italian. (and when they say them around real Italians they embarrass themselves.)

Very cruel...McClure

to put a kid like that in a pic and use the word retarded speaks alot of the character that you are. And you run a site like this. You should be ashamed of yourself. If any of you people in here though that this was appropriate, wells thats sad….. you can bash me but don’t mock kids with special needs moran.

White trash have special needs too, you know

And you didn’t seem to be too sensitive to them a few posts back.

Any news on whether Seabrook or Toews will be playing tonight? I haven’t heard anything yet, wondering if anybody else had.

Seabrook yes

I heard on the score 670 that Seabrook was a go, but not Toews. I wonder if Huet is starting.

Awesome.

Got more soul than a sock with a hole.

by chrome on Oct 29, 2009 1:29 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Well that was interesting wasn't it?

The Hawks are 7-3-1 and sitting atop their division quite comfortably with Huet rebounding back into the form we all thought he would return to and yet we still are finding things to argue over. Beautiful. None of which makes any sense and have nothing to do with hockey.
Hate to see what happens when the Hawks go on a losing streak. Yikes!

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!
