Seabrook's Olympic push (glad to have you back)

First, thanks to warrenjm2006 for suggesting this topic as a post based loosely on Allan Muir's SI article. The decision on whether or not Seabrook makes Team Canada will depend on an awful lot of variables as the February Olympics draw nearer, but I find it an interesting study as he is worthy and Vancouver is his hometown and, well, who the hell wouldn't in their wildest dreams be up for playing with your NHL blueline partner... for your country... in the Olympics... in your home freakin' town?!!!

I attended the Red vs. White Team Canada scrimmage back on Aug. 27th in Calgary and as I mentioned in a previous Fanpost, it was a frightening display of talent. Let's just focus on the D for the purposes of this discussion. Management have no doubt already made a few notes and changes as this was now 2 months ago and stats are starting to roll in. On a side note, someone must have slipped a bundle of Jagermeister into Rene Fasel's suitcase, or mentioned the additional 350-800 seats that will be freed up per game, because 2010 represents the first time the Olympics have been played on the smaller North American ice surface. Apparently 53% of Olympic hockey players in Turin were consistently playing on this ice size at the time of the 2006 Olympics and I'll assume we're all rooting for N.A. teams here, so good & good.

In attendance at Calgary playing defence were:

Duncan Keith

Jay Bouwmeester

Shea Weber

Brent Burns

Marc Staal

Francois Beauchemin

Scott Neidermayer

Mike Green

Dan Hamhuis

Dion Phaneuf

Brent Seabrook

Drew Doughty

Dan Boyle

Chris Pronger

Robyn Regehr

Stephane Robidas

These 16 defencemen represent a shitload of talent to whittle down, but I have to agree with Muir that Beauchemin, Burns, Green, and Robidas are quickly removing themselves from the list of candidates with their lackluster performances so far. I'll just tack Hamhuis on there too for obvious reasons. Sticking with the format of the past two Olympic rosters with 7 skaters on D, this still leaves 5 names to drop from the list.

Muir feels Neidermayer, Pronger, Keith, Bouwmeester and Weber are already done deals. Obviously those first three are a go, despite my personal feelings about the evil triad of Pronger, stupid penalties, and international refereeing. I’m not entirely sold on Bouwmeester or Weber even though I like and respect them both and they consistently rack up big points for defencemen in the NHL. Yes, they have the talent, but it’s a tight field they have to stand out in.

Okay - now let’s look at the guys Muir says are building a strong case for themselves; Biscuit, Boyle, Doughty, Phaneuf, & Regehr. For fun, let’s add Weber and Bouwmeester to this list. If we go on points alone, this is how it looked on Oct. 23rd when Muir’s article ran:

Boyle         12

Doughty    11

Phaneuf    9

Seabrook  7 (tied with Neidermayer)

B’meester 6

Weber        6

Regehr      5

If we run the +/- it looks like this:

Seabrook    +5

B’meester   +5

Doughty       +2

Boyle            +1

Weber          0

Phaneuf       0

Regehr         0

Since it is Olympic hockey, and we can expect inconsistent ref’ing and questionable infractions to result in whistles, I think it’s worthy to note that out of ALL the names on Muir’s list, Seabrook is in a four-way tie for the least penalized names in the bunch (4 min.). Pronger on the other hand, at 20 min’s already, has exactly twice as many as the second place Doughty.

Note too that at the time of the article, Seab’s and Pronger had played the least number of games at nine apiece. Boyle and Doughty each had 12 under their belts and Phaneuf & Regehr, like Weber and Bouwmeester, had 10.

Our boy isn’t a 40 or 50 point defenceman (yet) unlike say, Weber, Boyle, Phaneuf or even Bouwmeester. However, I do think he’s capable of it, showing improvement every year and he has more experience than someone like Doughty. He’s big, but pretty much all of these guys except Boyle are large.

There is an additional piece of voodoo at play here and that is the Keith/Seab’s linemates factor. If coaching staff and managers are down to splitting hairs to make the final decision, this could be a very real determining factor. We’ve all seen how fantastic these two can be together. If it’s more of a shut-down, no stupid penalties type pairing than a high-scoring, risk-reward couplet that comes into management’s pre-Olympic strategy, then I think Seab’s has as good a chance or better than some on the other names on the list.

Obviously, things can and will still change; weaklings can show bursts of talent at the appropriate moment before the final decision, injuries can create openings (S. Neidermayer & Jovanovski didn’t see ice at Turin), and shoe-ins can slump at the worst possible moments.

Myself, and a lot of other Canadians, would absolutely love to see this guy in a Team Canada jersey in front of his hometown crowd & the rest of the world in 2010. Who the hell else even gets the chance?? He’s got some stellar international experience with two World Junior teams, winning Gold in 2005 (yep, Phaneuf and Weber were there as well). While there’s too many variables to pin it down at this time of year, I feel he stands a very good shot at making an amazing dream come true. Go Seabs!!

The Defence Never Rests

Seabrook and Keith as a tandem are making a strong case for themselves for the Canadian Olympic squad in February, as that might be one of the criteria’s Yzerman and co. may require for success in Vancouver.
Granted Neidermayer, Pronger, and Boyle all look to be potential locks so far if the Olympic Oreintation Camp means anything as it seemed that Babcock and his coaching staff seemed to be leaning more towards those 3 to anchor Canada’s defence. With that said though, defenceman like Regehr, Phaneuf, Burns, and Hamhius have all played themselves out of contention, which leaves even more room for the dynamic duo to make it onto the team.
It’s going to be a hard decision for the managerial staff for Canada’s Olympic squad to make but it’s a good one for there are many defencemen playing at the top of their respective games right now.
The bad decision is who is going to play goal for Canada? Right now Fleury looks to be the best option.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

Goalies

Another post for someone, but I like it. I’m pretty sure Brodeur and Fleury will both be there, but Luongo has picked a bad year to slump early… and now his rib injury won’t help his cause much. He was the clear standout at the Red vs. White scrimmage, but that is now historical. I think they’ll be watching Mason and Luongo very closely from this point on. Only one of them will go.

As some of these posters have pointed out, it’s still a ways off. Lots can happen, but you KNOW nothing too whacky will take place in the goaltending dept. It’s going to be 3 of these four almost for certain.

Goalies

What about Cam Ward? Personally I think he should be there as well eventhough he struggled out of the gate. Another guy to keep an eye out for is Pascal LeClaire, the guy has been money in the bank for the best team in Canada (record wise) the Ottawa Senators. As good as Anderson has been in Colorado, LeClaire has been in Ottawa.

Goalies

Those two names have been coming up in a lot of conversations lately. Living in Banff means I can talk puck with someone from pretty much every province on any given night so I’m constantly being educated from a variety of perspectives… some of it even sinks in from time to time.

I think everyone was waiting to see how LeClaire’s ankle would heal – apparently just fine thanks. The guy is unbelievable and despite being a tad injury prone, he still managed a VERY impressive campaign in ‘07/’08. Columbus sure can spot a goalie in the draft. I’m sure there’s an eye or two trained on him right now with Vancouver in mind. Ward was shortlisted for the ‘06 Olympics and I think his experience (including at the international level) already makes him a prime candidate. I’d include either of these guys in the hunt.

As good as these guys are, t’s going to take something very spectacular to bump either Brodeur or Fleury off the roster right now. Fleury is currently posting great numbers and Brodeur is simply Canadian, NHL, and Olympic royalty. If it weren’t for the whiner Roy, he’d likely have 2 Olympic Gold medals, etc., etc., etc. The way Luongo is playing right now there may be a small crack opening for the 3rd spot, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see him bust out strong well before the finalization occurs.

I hope he makes the team and gets some playing time for Team Canada. I think that we’ll see 7 defensemen make the squad. If we take hawks61 automatic three of Niedemeyer, Pronger, and Boyle and add Weber and Keith to the “locked group” (I think that Keith gets in before Seabrook, but I’ve been wrong before), that leaves two spots for Seabrook (and probably Bouwmeester).

hungryHawk: Great post. I appreciate your insight. Youre definitely right that there’s still a lot of time to see different guys play their way or out before the Olympics, but I think Seabrook has a great chance.

I hope Seabs

does make the squad, he deserves it. The matter of the fact is that canada’s squad is like a loaded gun Rambo used throughout I believe the 2nd movie. Keith hopefully will make it as well, he is a tad better than Seabs in my opinion but not by a huge margin.

Won't Keith just kill on international ice?

If Seebs continues his early-season play and gets a few slapshots through, he’ll have a good argument for an incredibly hotly-contested spot.

Great write-up, thx.

It’s on NHL regulation ice. It’s in Vancouver.

I hope neither of them make the Canadian National Team

And i hope the Canadian National Team loses their ass in the Olympics.

TEAM AMERICA!!!

FUCK YA!!

haha, needed to be said i guess. In all honesty it would be nice to see the Hawks so weel represented on the National Teams BUT i would rather they sit at home and watch and not put an additional toll on their bodies, ESPECIALLY Seabrook and Keith who rack up huge TOI already and Keith was visibly slower and worn out during last years playoff run.

Tough position for me. I’m an American but spend so much of the season rooting for Canadian players. It’ll be hard to just flip a switch and cheer against those same guys. I would of course prefer an American victory but don’t plan on getting too torn up over Canada winning if that’s what happens.

Got your back.

While I pretty much despise all things Olympic related these days, it’s hard to turn my back on the hockey. Should be a fairly exciting couple of weeks this time around with some pretty serious competition. Man, I hope Seabs makes it. What a thrill that would be for him and his friends/family.

Green hasn’t played himself out of contention yet – he’s got 12 points in 13 games and a +4. He’s starting to find his backdoor cuts again, it really looks like it’s just a matter of time before the goals begin to pile up again, especially as the power play shakes itself out.
