I Guess We'll Stop Calling For AJ Over Sopel, Then
We'll ask Kent Wilson about Greentree, only had a cup of coffee in Southern Alberta last year, but threw up points galore in the "A". He's also big, and might just be reinforcements for tomorrow night.
Update: Kent from Matchsticks and Gasoline was kind enough to pass the following along about Greentree:
"Rockford depth, most likely. He has some good minor league stats, but he's got serious foot speed concerns. That said, it's hard to argue with the second most goals in the entire AHL last year. He could probably play in the NHL, but I doubt he'll ever be more than a 4th liner. "

Clever, but...
there’s no getting around the high geek quotient of all things Tolkien (I say this as a big fan.)
As for the trade, maybe we need some short-term forward help, but I reckon we’ll regret this move.
DESTROYERS AND USURPERS, CURSE THEM
I doubt this is as reactionary as needing to fill the spots vacated by the recent boo-boos of Bolland, Eager, and Brouwer, though his acquisition is a red flag indicating there’s a possibility either Eager or Brouwer may be out long term. But that seems unlikely; The Ent has been immediately assigned to RockVegas, no one has been called up, and it seems far more likely that Skille would get the first crack anyway.
The Fifth Feather Does a far better job articulating the reasons for the deal today, basically boiling it down to adding Rockford depth, unloading a body at a logjam position (Johnson was clearly beat out by Hendry and Sopel, and he never seemed to get out of Q’s dog house), and providing a scintilla of cap relief.
Naturally, we’re probably reading far too deep into this, but hey, it’s what we do.

It would help if I read the entire thread before posting
Apparently someone has been brought up. Bryan Bickell has been recalled.

Seen this coming
It’s no secret that AJ’s agent (Alan Walsh) did not endear himself to the Hawks upper management this summer with his involvement in the Havlat fiasco. Then combine that with the fact that it seemed that AJ was consistantly in Q’s doghouse (for whatever reason?), for he was passed over and over again by Walker last season and most currently Sopel, and that brings us to today. This deal wasn’t made overnight and probably was in the works during the summer but the Hawks hesitated until the season started for damage control reasons.
Don’t know much about Greentree and probably never will for I doubt we’ll ever see him in a Hawks uniform unless injuries to the Hawks blueline start to pile up. It seems more like a trading away of an agent than acquiring more muscle for the back-end, but I could be wrong.
It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!
Headscratcher
I guess they’re adding some value because it sounds like this kid is pretty good. But where would he fit in on this roster. I thought Johnson was good depth at least for the blueline. Now the only guy who comes to mind is Hendry.

And with the update
comes the answer. I still don’t understand why we’d trade depth at a position that is relatively weak compared to forwards for a guy who likely won’t play substantial time in the NHL.

Blueline depth
Maybe the Hawks think that Lalonde is ready to make that leap if called upon.

Lalonde
Is in Junior, so he’s there for the season. Maybe he gets a Tryout at playoff time for Rockford.

Okay, so then what...
Who’s next in line after Hendry?
Seabs – Kieth
Hammer – Cambell
Barker – Sopel
Hendry – ????

Sound like Greentree has some skill
Greentree, who has played in two games this season, has yet to record a point in four career NHL games, however he had 39 goals and 37 assists in 79 games for Quad City of the AHL last season.—- courtesy of TSN.ca
So it sounds like a deal to acquire a skilled forward with some size but whether or not we’ll ever see him in a Hawks uniform remains to be seen. By the sounds of things Flames fans not happy for another defenceman is the last thing they need.
Doubtful if AJ receives a lot of playing time in Calgary as a defenceman.

Doesn’t getting rid of one of the extra defensemen free up a roster spot since Greentree was assigned to Rockford?
Sounds like the Hawks hands were tied. I’m no waivers expert, but it seems to me that the Hawks need to call up a forward if Eager and Bolland are both going to be out (that 4th line combo yesterday was a shitshow), but one of the extra D would have had to go through the waiver process to be sent down to free up that spot and could have been lost for nothing. Instead they traded AJ to free up that roster spot. Reasonable or am I totally missing something (frequent occurence)?
Depth at Rockford...
With Bolland and Eager both out for at least a game, Hossa out until after the Circus Trip, and Burish out until St. Patricks Day, the Hawks will wind up raiding Rockford with some regularity in order to fill out when forwards get either hurt or traded.
This gives the IceHogs some depth for when Dowell, Bickell, or whomever puts another hit on their I-Pass.
