Hey look! Patrick Sharp!

Well, nothing really.  You can't figure out all that much from just October.  But there are some trends started.

-We worried that the Hawks wouldn't be as lucky this season with injuries as they were last year.  We got slapped right across the face with that fish.  2/3rds of the top line and 2/3rds for the 4th line have all missed significant time, along with Seabrook.  Luckily, the only one that seems to be long term now is Burish, as the Hossa clock is winding down as well.  If Toews didn't worsen his concussion with that suit on Friday, he's probably gonna go on Thursday.  Eager is skating again, so he's not that far away.  Hopefully, the worst is over, but you never know.

-The Amazing Cristobal can be very good, and he can be very bad.  As long as he settles closer to the former than the latter, things will be fine.

-As Matt said, Kris Versteeg is making the three of us look like morons (yes it's not all that hard to do.  Just put something shiny in front of us or in front of an attractive girl, we'll do the rest).  I know he was top of my list for first forward to go in The Great Salary Cull that is coming, because of his seemingly low hockey IQ and possible peaking.  Yeah, well, whoops.  He's been the Hawks second best forward, everywhere, and playing smart too.  He's even been a weapon on the PK, creating shorthanded chances that has to keep the opponent on their heels.  He's really the only other playmaking forward the Hawks have other than Kane.  Finding a spot for him when Hossa gets back will be tough, but doable, and it may be on his wing.  The answers aren't so clear for...

-Patrick Sharp.  I don't care what his numbers say, or about his game winning goal on Friday.  Since the Edmonton game, Shooter has been next to invisible.  He's reverted to the floating we saw last year, waiting for Kane to hit his tape.  Sadly, he hasn't played with Kane all season.  His performance on Friday started off shambolic, with turnovers and apparent shying from contact.  I'm almost disappointed he got rewarded by -- wait for it -- Kane finding his tape.  You can't argue with Sharp, you can get real rich waiting for #88 to do that.  But I'm wondering if Shooter hasn't become our own Cammalleri or Jason Blake.  Whatever it is, I want to see a big jump in play from Sharp, and quite sharpish, if you'll allow me an awful pun.

-Tomas Kopecky doesn't do anything.  I mean at all.

-Fingers crossed John Madden has enough gas in the tank to play like this through June.  I already am wondering how Thornton or Zetterberg or Jokinen or Sedin will react to having this wolverine in their grill for an entire series.

-Duncan Keith is having a weird year.  As we pointed out in the Indian, his Corsi rating for the year is one of the worst on the team.  But his +/- and Behind The Net Rating are both positive, and he's obviously having his best offensive start.  The only thing I can glean from this is that the shots taken against the Hawks when Keith is on the ice aren't going in -- though there are way more of them -- and the ones takes by the Hawks when Keith is on the ice are going in at a much higher rate.  It's early, these numbers could be skewed by one or two bad games, and Seabrook's aren't as bad.  But it was a category Keith was very positive in last year, and isn't now.

-Thanks to Huet's bad start, people have forgotten they're supposed to hate Brian Campbell.  Which is fine, because he's been excellent.

-The power play is still quite the mess, and sadly the changes the coaches made resulted in a goal on Friday, even though they made NO SENSE.  Versteeg and Kane on the same unit, even though they do the same thing, followed by Keith and Campbell on the points on one unit and Buff and Barker on another, meaning both pairings were comprised of players who do the same thing.  This is topped by a Kopecky being involved at all.  With a week of practice and Toews back, they should sort this out.

-Finally, I'm really tempted to cancel free speech when it comes to Patrick Kane.  I just can't fathom how anyone can't be blown away by this kid's play this year, and what you could possibly complain about.  He's backchecking, fighting through checks to make plays, creating chances off a forecheck, and absolutely dominating shifts, periods, and games when he gets time.  But go ahead and do it anyway, it's hilarious for the rest of us.

Kane

I like that the incident in the summer hasn’t affected his play. He’s elevated his game. It’s impressive.

I think it has affected his play, but in the positive. He wants to prove all of his new (and already existing) critics wrong. Very very impressive.

Kane is a fliud superstar who when giving a 100% can look like that superstar. Versteeg, who skates like he is out of balance most of the time, has to give 110% to be effective…..although I do believe Versteeg is starting to see this game in slow motion, based on moves he has made with and with out the puck.

Shooter...

Its kinda sad hes floating because I am a big fan, and I am afraid to lose him in the inevitable cap purge. However I have no idea who else I would be willing to part with, because I had the same opinion that our fearless leaders did about STEEG!!! I guess I would be ok with Buff going, although the comic relief of watching him skate would be missed.

Also…

Is there anything we can do with Kopecky? Was he a package deal with Hossa?

As you touched on Sam, the problem so far is that it doesn’t seem Q is arranging the lines in the best way to play to everyone’s strengths. For example, Madden, while one of our best centers, doesn’t really play the right kind of style to be on a line with Kane. Or perhaps it’s more appropriate to say that having Kane on a line with Buff and Madden leaves him pretty much out on an island with nobody else to finish for him. If Q is so intent on having Buff in front of the net to open up some space for Kane, why not kill two birds with one stone: have Kopecky center Kane and Sharp. It gives Kopecky a chance to finally do something worthwhile if he can clog up some goalie’s field of vision with his Slovakian ass, and the Kaner to Sharpie’s tape pass option becomes possible again.

Failing that, Sharp and Steeger on the same line looked like the most outstanding thing ever, and then it just kind of went away. I’d like it to come back if there are no other options.

Seems like

Q needed a new “Matt Walker”, and Kopecky is that guy. I wonder if Walker gave his naked pics of Q’s wife to Tomas on his way down to Tampa Bay…

agreed about Versteeg

He seemed to hit a plateau toward the middle/end of last season, and he was one of the players I’ve had my eye on since preseason, especially after signing that contract extension. I’m pretty happy with how he’s played so far, especially on the PK. He’s maybe not the best in the defensive zone, but his shiftiness is causing a lot of problems in the neutral zone and, as you said, creating a lot of shorthanded chances.

It’s funny, I’d almost forgotten that he had four shorties last season! And if he can continue to clamp down on the offensive zone giveaways that seemed to plague him at times last year, he should be fine.

Versteeg

really bottomed out and completely lost his shit in that blowout loss in the Detroit series and he grew up.

Also, we haven’t had that seven goal game yet this season that we’re capable of even though we’ve had a few games where it easily could have happened. There’s a devastating hot streak somewhere in our future.

But I also think there’s a real cold streak coming up in the next month or so. When the beginning of the season excitement wears off but the memory of the passion and intensity of the playoffs is still stuck in their mind, yet this year’s playoffs are still months away there’s going to be a letdown with what is still a very young team. And I’d like to see how we stack up with a team that plays us physically and takes away our team speed advantage by getting in our face for 60 minutes. Calgary did that a little bit, maybe a little in the Detroit game but the only real example so far this season was Vancouver. Maybe that means that it’s easier said than done and very few teams are capable of beating the Hawks with physical play, or maybe it’s just a function of those teams having not been on the schedule. We’ll see what the future holds.

Good 1-month run down

The only other things i would add is a shout out to super nintendo and sopel. I remember watching an interview with the hammer last year and he was saying that he hasn’t really incorporated the physical element into his game because he’s trying to just get the speed of the NHL down and not screw up. I think he’s shown how reliable he can be back there.

And sopel, he’s not going to win any skill competitions but the guy is willing to step in front of a howitzer to stop a shot. He’s filling in his role nicely.

Other than that, i’m mildly disappointed in barker’s play, but hopefully he’ll improve. I’d like to see a little more ladd and bolland but they’ve chipped in when needed.

Dead on w/ Kopecky

GVT wasn’t kind to him and it appears (sample size alert) they’re right.

Keith

has to stop leaving his check around the net. Too much floating, and it seems to have become even more evident this year.

Sharp

might be floating around a bit,but if i am gonna trade anyone to free up space so i can sign toews kane and dunc its gonna be barker…the guy was the 3rd pick in the draft, can’t skate for shit, turns the puck over and over in his own zone, although he has a wicked slapshot,he wouldn’t be missed all that much…

Sharp still kills penalties, and you never know, when Toewser and Hossa get back he may benefit playing on a line with them, assuming he will be on their line…

this team got hot in december last year if i am not mistaken…the big 9 game winning streak?

by csm on Nov 2, 2009 4:06 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I agree with most of this, Sam, it’s a good rundown.

But I think Hammer deserves mention. This is essentially his rookie season and he’s stepped into the second pairing without a hitch, as calm with the puck as Keith. Also, I don’t think we should underestimate Hammer’s role in 51 Phantom’s improved play … he’s realized after the playoffs (when he and Seabs were our best d-men), that he can rely on Hammer, and that’s huge for both of them.

Other things:
- Brouwer is one of the best contracts in the league in terms of pure value
- Sopel’s not exactly fast, and his contract is obscene, but he’s doing the job as our 6th man better than anyone could have hoped
- PP is mystifying and needs fixing desperately. I often feel we have a better chance scoring shorthanded than we do when we have a 2-man ad.

by ChicoMaki on Nov 2, 2009 9:05 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Kopecky is the only player on the roster that has demonstrated the ability and testicular fortitude to plant his behind in front of the net and stay there, regardless of the circumstances or the consequences. He’s playing above his head line-wise right now due to injuries, but I have no problem with him as a fourth-line forward.

Agreed re ass.

by ChicoMaki on Nov 2, 2009 11:57 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

totally agree

although he certainly needs to work harder if he’s going to be on the power play. he just looks listless. not to mention if all he does is stand in front of the net and not cycle the puck with the rest of the forwards we’re not going to create enough advantages on the PP to take shots.

by Kevin Kujawa on Nov 2, 2009 12:06 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

If the PP strategy is going to be bombs-away from the blue line, than I imagine he’s necessary or at least helpful (see: Barker’s broken-bat home run on Friday). However, I assume either the strategy or the units (hopefully both?) will change significantly when the injured players return, bumping him off the power-play.

Buff really trailed off as the season progressed.

He came out and played really tough, high effort hockey the first week and a half. By Friday night, he seemed like he was just going through the motions again.

Got more soul than a sock with a hole.

What do we know for sure?

Never put Cammalleri and Sharp with Jason Blake in the same sentence ever. Sharp has been noticably absent in many games so far this season which is troubling, however he still remains a legitimate threat everytime he touches the puck and with that should be placed on a line with either Toews or Kane. Sharp is a tremendous triggerman that needs someone to feed him the bullets and those two are the best at it on this team.

When Versteeg wants to become a factor in a game he can be just that, but there are too many games in which his compete level is not where it should be and with the continued development of Skille it’s almost certain that Versteeg will be the first one shipped out in the off-season. Unfortunately, Versteeg tends to play to the level of his linemates and with Hossa coming back later this month I’m afraid that being sent to 3rd line duty may result in a drastic drop-off in performance. Hope I’m wrong.

Kane is proving all the critics wrong about the NHL cover boy curse as he has been one of the best players in the league this far into the seaosn as he has been an absolute nightmare to defend all the while having Byfuglien and Madden as linemates as I’m sure he is counting down the minutes upon Hossa’s return.

Huet has returned to form just the way many of us predicted he would and his numbers would suggest.
Hjalmarsson has quickly turned into one of the most dynamic defencemen in this league as I’m sure Hakken Andersson and the rest of the selection committee for Sweden has taken notice of this as well.
Brouwer has picked up his game immensely and should be rewarded with a little more ice-time as he has been one of the few to bring his A-game every night so far.

8-4-1 and sitting atop the Central Division which is were the Hawks want to be right now.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

What also do we know?

Well, we also know that the PP is excruciatingly ineffective. What is the point of recreating the Red Wings PP when the Hawks do no have a defenceman like Lidstom who has a heavy, yet extremely accurate, shot from the point. Are Byfuglien and Kopecky supposed to be a recreation of Franzen and Holmstrom? Why don’ t the Hawks just go back to what worked for various parts of last season when they had Toews and Sharp down low with Kane working along the boards and use the play the worked so often in the playoffs with Toews crashing the net with that ‘stuff it in’ play. The lack of success on the PP is as frustrating to watch as Kane’s continuously ineffective shootout attempts from last season. If it ain’t broke why change it?

I think you will see more of that when Toews is healthy, he is obviously the missing part for that play.

And i totally agree with you guys on Sharp and Kane. Sharpie really needs to step it up as this is about the point when a player hits his prime (age wise). When he skates and works hard there is no better forward on the Hawks, problem is he only seems to do that about once a week.

this team has yet to gel. When Toews Eger and Hossa come back, barring any other injuries, it should be a magical season. crossing fingers.

Fingers crossed John Madden has enough gas in the tank to play like this through June. I already am wondering how Thornton or Zetterberg or Jokinen or Sedin will react to having this wolverine in their grill for an entire series.

I have to say, no matter what club Mad Dog suits up for, I don’t think I will ever stop thinking of him as a Devil – he may be a Blackhawk, but he still plays like a Devil. I was disappointed that Madden wasn’t able to stay in New Jersey like he wanted and retire here (which he deserved to do), but there was no way Lou could justify shelling out the amount of Dale Tallon did to get him, especially not when the Devils still had yet to resign younger, arguably more important players like centre Travis Zajac and defenseman Johnny Oduya, who were UFA and FA respectively. And taking into the account that key players like wingers Zach Parise and David Clarkson and defenseman Paul Martin will be up for new contracts within the next few seasons, the likelihood of Lamoriello being able to keep Madden and still sign the team’s core of young talent would probably have been into the slim-to-none range.

But a good pick-up for the Blackhawks. Madden is, in my opinion, the best defensive forward in the league. He’s fast, smart and has the tenacity of a bulldog. Back in the day, no one shadowed the opposition’s best forwards with the same doggedness as Mad Dog did. During the ‘00-’01 Eastern Conference Final, Mario Lemieux, who had been Madden’s special assignment throughout the series, cross-checked Madden in the head during the final minute of Game 5 because he was so pissed off that Madden had helped limit Lemieux to just three measly assists in a series the Devils wound up winng 4 games to 1 and saw the high-powered Penguins offense get whitewashed by Brodeur and company twice. And I’ll never forget the time he took a skate off the face during a scrum during the ’03 Stanley Cup Final. He skated over to the Devils bench just long enough to grab a towel to stem the flow of the blood before skating back over to the scene of the accident to yap at the Ducks congregated there. The Devils training staff had to pull him off the ice to sew up his face, but even then he only missed, like, three shifts. He spent the rest of the series rocking a set of gnarly stitches and two blacks eyes. If even a fraction of that player is left in John Madden, you can count on him doing his job come playoff time.

Thanks and great write-up

Mad Dog has definitely become a legend very quickly around these parts. Unfortunately, the new CBA has brought some of these issues to play were a fan favourite leaves his longtime team to join another due to the circumstances around the salary cap. As much as he might be missed in NJ we’re extremely happy to have him as a member of the Chicago Blackhawks.
Classy post on your part and was an excellent read.

Well...

Kopecky gets the shit assignment of standing in front of the net a lot. Given that there is nobody else on this roster with the balls to want to do that, I can hardly fault Kopecky for his other significant shortcomings. He’s a perfectly fine 4th liner. Nuff said.

The dynamic of this team shall undergo an extreme makeover just as soon as Marian Hossa is back in the full swing of things. Don’t underestimate the positive domino effect of Hossa coming on board.

in other news

I dont really need another jersey, but I really want something with Madden on it

Any chance we can get reebok to make some of those shirts with the name and number on the back with a sweet Madden 11?

I’ve seen them on sale and on nhl.com’s shop for the usual suspects, toews, kane, campbell, sharp, and old mikita and hull ones.

Who do we need to harass to get this done?

I was able to get mine from nhl

I ordered the women’s jersey that you can customize. For some reason the women’s jersey is cheaper, and I needed room for my boobs. Unforunately, they seem to think if you have boobs you also have ape arms.

If I can't be a good example, I'll just be a horrible warning

I did see they have an autographed madden devils jersey , for like $500+

which is cool, but, I’ve got a ton of jerseys (Living in Dekalb, I’m right between the Hawks, and Icehogs, so I have a few jerseys of each team). I’d like to drop $25 for the madden shirt like this:

Reebok Chicago Blackhawks Jonathan Toews Player Name & Number T-shirt

I think I’ll go to reebok’s HQ and just shoot pucks through the windows with ransom notes until they comply.
Maybe we can make this happen.
