Monday Roundabout

Nice goal, but you totally biffed the celebration, dude.

Nice goal, but you totally biffed the celebration, dude.

Just a few loose ends to talk about today.

-Rosenbloom, we've been talking up Brouwer for weeks.  Catch up.

-Sassone is banging the Matt Cullen drum.  Cullen's a nice player, but that's just about it.  While I'm not enthralled with Cam Barker either, losing him now wouldn't help the team much.  It also invites the question on what the Hawks would do when Dave Bolland comes back.  Shift Cullen to wing?  In place of who?  Put Bolland on the wing?  The answer is in-house.  Sharp was in the middle for the 3rd period last night, and it was probably Q's way of telling him, "Get used to this."  And the way Sharp was skating last night, he's come to terms with it.

-The Hawks beat the league leaders with basically one line last night, and it's because Jonathan Toews is a gift from God.  Had he not mauled Joe Pavelski at times, the Hawks probably would have sat at 1 all night.  Here are your Corsi's from last night, with Seabrook and Keith sticking out the most.  Puck Daddy was sounding the now-tired Cap-ocalypse air-raid siren again.  Read nothing into Toews and Kane being the first to be locked up.  There's no debate the Toews is the most important one, and he has the same agent as Kane, so it's just sense that they would get done at the same time.  We'll go more into this when we get the final numbers, if there are any.

Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead, and Dustin Byfuglien still sucks.

-This trip looks a nightmare.  Not only are the Hawks facing four teams who are playing pretty well right now, but two of them have vested interest.  After getting bounced in May and then embarrassed in October, blowing a 5-goal lead (and I'm still not sure that really happened), is there any doubt the Flames will be out for blood Thursday?  We know the story with Vancouver.  San Jose hasn't lost in regulation at home yet, and the Hawks always make a fustercluck of any night at Staples Center.  I would take 3-3 on this and run for the exit.

fwiw, Rogers jumped on with WMVP earlier today noting that he expects Daydream’s extensions to be finalized after the circus trip. I suppose if McD had his way they would announce the extensions on Tues 12/1 a few hours before the Hawks next home game…then promptly roll out the red carpet with dudes arriving in suits.

Matt Cullen

People in Carolina seem to love him. What is he good at? He’s good for about 15 goals and 25 assists, from what I can see. He’s better when not being depended on to be the main offensive threat. Is he a good faceoff man? Good in his own end?

Anyone got a scouting report on him?

by Slaky on Nov 16, 2009 4:29 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

His FO% is 48%

He’s a good gritty, hard-working two-way player, and it would put yet another cup winner on our team. I have my reservations about this deal, but we do need to free up cap space. I think it could work out well.

So the general consensus is the Hawks would give up Buff or Barker, no?

by Slaky on Nov 16, 2009 4:50 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Compares favorably to Bolland

We could slap a #36 on him and most might not know the difference. + player through most of his career, responsible defensively, 50/50 on faceoffs and would probably enjoy dishing to Hossa on a regular basis.

Could we maybe call him John Madden-lite?

That’s what I pictured based on the stats and the considerable amount of love he’s getting from Canes fans.

i say 4-2 for the road trip

hawks have been playing well with most of their top players out.

OMG

Rosenbloom needs to just leave hockey alone. He is in a constant battle with ESPN’s Jesse Rogers for “Worst Hawks Reporter”

Thursday 11/19

Kaner’s 21st birthday.

Hopefully any birthday festivities don’t derail his point streak………of course the drinking age is 19 in Canada anyway.

speaking of the Hawks and the media

Did anyone notice David Haugh in one of the suites with McDonough, Bowman, etc last night? I think that was him up there. I’m not sure how common having members of the media up in the boxes with the front office guys is. I looked in the trib today for a Haugh article and didn’t see one.

Could just be an interview for a column running later

He’s a columnist, not a beat guy, so he doesn’t go by the same set of rules as Kuc, Sassone, or Ziehm. One thing you can guarantee, he will be schlobbing all over McD’s knob in the piece.

Thornton appears to be yawning in that pic.

Of course...

The puck is on the wrong end of the ice for him to be paying any attention.

LOL I noticed that too. Must be rounding into his usual playoff form.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

No Buff no sweat

If shipping away Buff and Barker means the Hawks keep their core (Sharp, Toews, Kane, Versteeg, Keith, and Seabrook) together for multiple seasons then I’m all for it. Here me out,

I DEMAND MULTIPULT STANLEY CUPS! Not just a one year all cards on the table smash and grab. I’m sure many others here agree.

I believe Bowman, Talon, and Sr. Bowman will make the right decisions to insure this possibility at a management level. When it comes down to it Bowman will supply the Blackhawks with all the tools they need to win Cup(s) it’s then up to the players as a collective whole.

BTW: Nice write up, gave me a pretty good laugh!

How many more days til Burish is back?

I’ll settle for a SINGLT one just now.

3-3 on the trip would be OK

Anything more would be a true success.

Buf has never greatly impressed me. He’s huge (but plays smaller than his size), not particularly physical slow & not real smart.

Barker is a still young D man who still has huge potential upside – could be a really dominant D man. Or may never get any better.

If they get some decent player and vent some cap-load, then I would view it as a very reasonable deal (if Barker matures into a Pronger level dominant guy, I’ll regret it though).

Huet who?

It’s only been a month, but it seems we’ve collectively buried some significant hatchets here already. I took the liberty of looking up the title of the daily post on this site a month ago and it sent chills down my beer pipe. It was actually Oct. 17th and it had the words “Huet” and “Hate” in it. It sounded like the man was fucking lucky to even be alive in some of the posts that day and here we are exactly one month later & I’m the 21st comment here and the first to mention his name.

This morning he was posting a top 10 GAA, his save percentage is just above Osgood and right below Fleury, and he’s one of less than half the goalies in the league to post a shutout.

Now whoda’ fuckin’ thunk it?

Not even one game...

After the 3rd goal he gave up against San Jose, people were going nuts. He stopped a slow 100 foot roller about 3 minutes after and got the old ‘Bronx Cheer’.

Just to clarify..

I wasn’t advocating Huet hatred – I was just saying we were going to hear it all again.

Much like El Duque’s Raft suggests

DVR is great!

And so was the Sunday game vs. S.J. Great game to be at, I just wish I set the DVR for WGN that night because I would really like to watch it again. Damn.
