Chris Kuc is reporting that extensions for all three players could come as early as Tuesday. Y2K, meet Capocolypse. Nothing official yet, and I've not seen any numbers floated. Stay tuned, if this drops, I'm sure we'll all have thoughts regarding this

BUT THEN

WHAT ABOUT SEABROOK AND VERSTEEG AND GETTING RID OF HUET AND CAMPBELL? THE TEAM IS STILL BROKEN!!!!! AAAAAAHHHH, I CAN SEE THE SKY RIGHT NOW AND ITS STILL FALLING

wait what?

This is great

It is time to say goodbye to sharp, buff, and maybe barker but keith , kane and toews are players that cannot be let go. Pitt and detroit ae perfect examples of the new nhl. You develop a strong core of 6 players and have a revolving door for the rest of the roster. Hawk fans need to come to grips with this. With our core of players we will be a contender for a decade.

by Bhilk on Nov 17, 2009 2:56 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

hopefully they get

KEITH KANE and TOEWS signed right now….and then trade Buff and Barker, get rid of them….Brouwer has essentially become the player the Hawks were hoping Buff would become, and Barker is just plain awful, good offensively but bad on D and turns the puck over in his own end too much…Someone mentioned what if he leaves and becomes the next Pronger?PRonger could skate when he came into the league,Barker can’t….When i see Drew Doughty(I compare Doughty and Barker because of them being drafted 2 and 3 in the first round),thats what i would want Barker to be like, and honestly, imo,he’ll never be that good

by csm on Nov 17, 2009 3:04 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I know

Barker and Doughty weren’t drafted in the same draft, even though it sounds like that in my post…sorry, its early in the mornin, and i still haven’t had my coffee

thanks for clarifying.

It kills me sometimes when I think— if we’d just sucked a LITTLE bit more in, we could have had Malkin.

i would love to see all 3 set

the new NHL economic system does push teams to set a small core of high paid guys and have a lot of ‘cheap’ filler players.

if y’all will recall, a few years into his career Pronger was being discussed as the worst #1 pick ever, the all-time mega-bust wasted hgh draft pick.

D men take a lot longer to mature into impact players, if it happens at all.

If true...

….this IS a cause for celebration!!

So many other guys are critical to this year’s team, but, long-term, this has a Jordan-Pippen feel…if true.

For this year, barring major injury, no more deals. We like our people. Stop playing GM.

We get down on (depending on the day), say, Buff but remember when Frodo wanted to chuck Gollum down a well or something, but Gandalf said he might be important later. I feel that way about all our whipping boys when they’re getting beat up.

Right on.

I’m tired of the rush to tear this team apart before we’ve even had a chance to enjoy them all on the ice together.

Glad to hear the Big Three are going to be around a while. Now, let’s enjoy the rest of the season, and save the offseason for our hysterical armchair GMs.

The armchair GMing

will only get worse once people have numbers to play with. Once we see what Kane, Toews, and Keith are going to bring in, you can really see where others fit it.

That's exactly how people need to look at this

you have to keep core guys, and other ones, sorry to say, have to be shuffled in and out over the years. In a perfect, non-salary cap, NHL world, we would keep everyone we wanted…but the people who want to scream and cry when one of their favorite, smaller role players, gets let go, must reference the current NHL reality, and take a pill.

This is, if true, is indeed a cause for celebration! When was the last time we actually had CORE players we needed and WANTED to build around??? Remember when we might have thought Arnason, Bell and Calder were those guys!? Yeah, so there should be nothing but a “Fuck yeah! Kaner, Toews, and Keith are staying!” and not “oh no! who is gonna go! noooo!”

Anyone here suspect we may be some time away from hearing about this, though? If it does go down, I’d expect McDonough would want to cash in on the hype … and the team isn’t back home for a while yet. Nice Christmas present, though.

Like I said yesterday, don’t be surprised if the red carpet festivities are rolled out on 12/1. Perhaps the Keith extension will receive it’s own presser over the next day or so, but you know Kane/Toews will be together…in suits…probably on the return home.

i could have sworn i read somewhere how Scotty said that he thinks of Hjalmarson as the second coming of Lidstrom….i think of that as b.s…..right now Hammer is not Lidstrom,he is good but he is not in a league with Lidstrom….but if Scotty made those comments I’m sure he thinks of Hjalmarson as part of the core

offensively he is not in Lidstrom's league

but if you cant see how naturally gifted, calm, and collected this 22yr old kid is….you should probably pick up “Hockey for Dummies” on Amazon. His positional play is of the kind that leaves you speechless, and he hasnt even really grown into his 6’3 frame yet.

unrelated to the post here

Anybody read Mirtle’s post on shots differential?

The topic is a beaten horse but down the comments he does mention that in everything but goaltending, he sees the Blackhawks as having the best team in the league.

I don’t know about offense yet, given all our injuries, but we’ve definitely got the best D out there.

by chiblackhawks on Nov 17, 2009 8:54 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Really Kuc?
The largest current cap hit on the Hawks’ roster is goaltender Cristobal Huet’s $5,625,000, with Marian Hossa’s hit at $5,275,000. The Hawks gave Hossa $62.8 million over 12 years to help ease the cap hit.
Many believe Toews, 21, and Kane, who will turn 21 on Thursday, will sign similar extended-term deals. But that may not be the case as it would make sense for them to sign for fewer than Hossa’s 12 years or Brian Campbell’s eight, putting them in the prime of their careers the next time they’re free agents. They could then be in position to demand even bigger paydays.

Mentions that Huet is the biggest cap hit, and then mentions campbell’s contract a couple sentences later……guess the lightbulb never clicked.

Kuc’s mention that LeBrun has reported this makes me nervous that he is just piggybacking on that, and doesn’t have any additional sources. We’ll see.

by hackerar on Nov 17, 2009 8:56 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Completely ignoring the fact that it would be terribly illegal by NHLPA standards, it’d be fun to see the Hawks circumvent the cap by signing all of their players to league minimum contracts to fit them in, and then make up the difference between those contracts by paying them through some kind of Blackhawks Marketing Organization or something like that. It isn’t like these guys haven’t done enough appearances to warrant that kind of recognition, so instead of just doing the appearances because they are part of the team, they’d do it as a “second job.”

Alright, so maybe it’s a stupid idea, but it’s far from my first.

The core 6 are...

Toews/Kane/Keith/Hossa/Seabrook/Bolland? Or am I missing something.

How many years does Sopel have?

With Brouwer playing damn good hockey, shouldn’t Buff be easily expendable, as well as Cam Barker with Hjalms becoming a damn stellar defenseman?

Obviously Brian Campbell will be impossible to trade (thanks a lot Tallon for the inflated contract) and the 4th line guys don’t even make enough to deem a trade worthy for cap issues.

I am thinking the Hawks are doing a shit ton better with deals this time other than the horseshit before E.G. Bolland’s deal, Versteeg’s deal, Cam Barker’s deal, Huet’s deal. Etc.

Other than the big three, who else are free agents this upcoming season? Who do you keep between Verstud!, Sharpie, and Buff (first out the door)?

A few long term deals, a trade or two and they should be fine.

It would tickle my fancy to see Dunc, Marvel, and 20 cent all signed before this week ends, please don’t be feeding me bullshit Kuc

Sopel has the rest of this year and next.

Buff should be easily expendable, except for the $3MM/per for the next two years. Next year, Kyle Beach will be able to fill Byfuglien’s role more capably.

The biggest UFA after this season is Madden. Hammer is an RFA.

Honestly, I never liked Daze. I thought he played to soft and never brought his ‘A’ game when it was really needed. Of course I was also a drunk college kid who didn’t know shit then as well. That being said the back injury thing and the potential similarities are scary.

Assuming Bolland heals fine like many people do from similar injuries, I think he has tremendous potential. I don’t think his 130pts for the London Knights in ‘05-’06 was a fluke. Kane had 145pts the following year when Bolland was in Norfolk.

by runningquicklynowhere on Nov 17, 2009 2:39 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I was a drunk high school kid who didn’t know anything, and I agree. But Daze’s position as a star, checking forward was fazed out, especially post-lockout. I think that a hard-working two-way center will never go out of style.

I know “Capapalooza” is upon us at the end of the season, but I was hoping to enjoy more than two months of the season before I needed to overanalyze cap space and possible trades and parting with some of the guys on the team that I like.

I realize we’re not going to be able to keep all these guys. I just want to worry about the games were playing right now, not the way the team will look after the trade deadline.

by Sportsgal on Nov 17, 2009 9:56 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I get what your saying. You may have a different worry than most others. Everyone else was freaking out on whether they could or Would sign the big 3. Now that it seems thats a done deal people will just worry about the next thing they can’t control.

If the Hawks are in serious contention for a Cup at the end of Feb.(which they should be) i wouldn’t anticipate any in-season trades that are earth shattering.

Well considering

how well the D has been, and not to mention Penalty killing,FO’s percentage, and teh difference in shot totals every game,it does seem as though the only thing that could stop the Hawks is bad goaltending,or their own ego’s….i mean they held the Sharks to what 23 shots?and they out shot them by like 7 or 8….i said this once, and i’ll say it again, while i was watchin the HAwks toronto game, and as Kessel scored his second goal,i was thinking, man that is what the Hawks are missing, they should trade for a good goal scorer,a sniper….and then i remembered that they had Hossa, lol

The price of winning a Stanley Cup...

…is making tough decisions about players who may do certain things that are nice, but maybe won’t help you achieve that goal.

This is where the questions arise about whether players in their current roles on the Hawks (Sharp, Byfuglien, VERSTEEG!, Barker) would be in the same role on a Stanley Sup winning team.

If any of the developments of today are to be believed, I’m taking “Versteeg jersey” off my Christmas list and adding “Keith jersey”

Looks like the Keith (13 years), Toews and Kane (5 year deals) are all but officially as now there are 29 other GM’s weeping at the fact that they’re not going to have a chance at any of them.
Who stays? Who goes? That’s for another day when the Hawks have to travel down that avenue but for the meantime this is the best news for this franchise in a very long time. Nice to see this organization sign their core players rather than trade them away or let them walk due to frugality. For those who’ve had to endure the destruction of years past this is tremendous time to be a Blackhawks fan.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

My first guess...

Is Sassone’s Cullen rumor has some legs, and either Byfuglien or Barker get reacquainted with Tuomo Ruutu. That clears $3MM in cap space for next season,
