He Returns, The Redeemer!

So tomorrow's the big night, when Marian Hossa finally takes the ice.  Sassone is hinting/reporting/guessing that he's going to line up with Daydream Nation, which none of us like but whatever, let's enjoy the carnage they create for the time being.  This is Coach Q, it'll change pretty quickly.  Maybe it makes his first few games easier, we shall see.

I mentioned this in one of my editorial's in The Indian during the last homestand, but I get the impression that there's a lot of Hawks fans who don't appreciate what a special player the Hawks are getting here.  Simply put, Hossa is the most dynamic forward the Hawks have had since Roenick, and maybe even Savard.  He does everything on the ice well, never takes a shift off, is in the same speed-category as Keith and Campbell, and has a nose for the net that no one on the team can match right now.

The Fifth Feather laid out some ground rules for Hossa's return, you should read them and learn them.  They're spot on.

Anyway, can't wait.  Big clash tomorrow.  You'll need food and booze for it.  So come get it with McClure and I at Whirlaway.  You won't even have to put up with Killion.

“He’s going to add so much to our lineup,” Kane said. “He’s a 40-goal scorer and, who knows, when he comes back, he might even score 40 again with the skill I’ve seen at practice. It seems like he scores on every shot.”

Clearly this means that Huet is no good in practice and should be traded! And send that lazy Kaner with him!

That quote, and...
“Every day you look at him and say, wow, the way he can relax the puck and make plays and settle it,” Quenneville said. “It’s definitely high end.”

Anyone else giggle with glee while reading that knowing this mother trucker is joining our already potent force??? This isn’t just some mope in a bar with a Hawks shirt on with an NBC5 microphone up to his face after being asked about Hossa joining the team…this is Kaner and Q saying this…teeheehee!

"It won’t always be Marian Hossa’s fault"

I feel a bit of anxiety over the inevitable armchair clashes about his performance. Like Campbell, the Hawks have a player with limitless potential and a tangible history of questionable results.

There seem to be two sides to defecting superstars like this in Chicago. Side One: absolute, rabid, insane hyperbole (“The Redeemer”? For a team this loaded?). Side Two: blue-collar bellyaching about lazy, overrated, overpaid primadonnas that underperform. Both sides are going to be on full display all season long, and God help us all come playoff time. If Campbell is any indication though, huge mistakes will be forgiven (or just not mentioned) ’round these parts based on reputation alone. I hope the rabid among us can be honest with the guy, huge contract or no.

Is there a particular Campbell boner (if you’ll pardon the expression) that you feel we gave him a pass on?

That wasn't baiting or anything...

I think that the fundamental mistakes he makes on defense, despite them being the result of his “high-risk, high-reward” style of play are completely overlooked by a large portion of fans on this board. Also he was fucking DISMAL on the PP this year, and that was his whole redeeming quality according to everyone defending his roster spot when others were calling attention to his faults.

If you want one boner though, I’d say the 3-on-1 he allowed against Barker that sealed their fate was a pretty big one. The quote, I believe, was something like “99 out of 100 times that is the right play.” During a game that huge the glaring 1 of 100 when it isn’t.

I'm confused

so you’re on side two then?

How can Brian Campbell’s PP play this year already be discussed in the past tense? Do you have a time machine and know something that all of us dont?

In all seriousness, I’m not sure how you can say his PP time has been dismal when even discussed in the present tense

FifthFeather.com

by El Duque's Raft on Nov 24, 2009 7:55 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I think the point is...

…early this year, the PP was lame. Lots of moaning about it, but little attached to Soup.

As I’ve stated often, I like Campbell, but the “official” view, perhaps as a reaction to the deluge of ill-informed hate, may be guilty of being a wee bit protective of the guy.

by cliffkoroll on Nov 24, 2009 9:40 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

The problem wasn’t really the fact that the Hawks couldn’t move up ice, through the neutral zone and into the opponents zone – and that’s a large part of Campbell’s job. If Campbell does gain his points from secondary assists (as was mention in a previous post, though I haven’t actually looked it up) then he’s setting up plays after moving the puck. When the power play was a mess, that wasn’t happening.

You can’t really blame Campbell for the power play troubles because just about everyone looked lost, which makes it seem much more like a coaching/system problem rather than your QB. If the unit QB’d by Barker was racking up points but Campbell’s wasn’t – then there’d be an issue. Instead, it was bigger than that.

It may be true that we’ve been quick to defend Campbell – but yeah, it’s most because it’s impossible to have a rational discussion about his faults/benefits because so many people are just quick to jump on the he’s “soft/overpaid/blah blah blah” bandwagon

by Matthew Dirt on Nov 24, 2009 10:00 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Good call Matt

People also tend to forget that when Campbell was given that contract that it was done under a cap that had increased over $8 million over the past year and $18 million over the previous three so, at the time, there was widespread belief that it would continously rise hence the 8-year deal worth $56.8 million. To blame Campbell, Tallon, or McDonough for that deal is complete nonsense because nobody could’ve forseen the economic downturn that was about to happen a few short months ahead which has affected the league’s revenue severely.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

by hawks61 on Nov 25, 2009 8:52 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

It's funny..

When I saw the Fifth Feather rule about how “it won’t always be Hossa’s fault”, my initial reaction was….Awesome, now people can stop blaming Campbell for everything. I guess I jumped the gun.

And I don’t think the SCH guys defend him too much, although I might. But entering last off season, we desperately needed an offensive defenseman who could carry the puck on the PP and even strength. Campbell was the best available, we got him (and didn’t overpay, mind you…Atlanta offered him over $60M and other teams were right in line with what the Hawks offered) and our PP has seen a boon in production since. That shit ain’t coincidence…he was THE only addition to that power play from the 07-08 season.

And when SCH called the power play slump this year “clown shoes”, it paled in comparison to how dismal that shit was before Campbell got here.

BC (before Campbell)
05-06 – 12.2% – 30th in NHL
06-07 – 11.8% – 30th in NHL
07-08 – 15.9% – 24th in NHL

AC
08-09 – 19.3% – 12th in NHL
09-10 – 22.5% – 9th in NHL

I think this is just a case of people bitching about the current product who didn’t watch the comparative product from a few years ago. And there might be some truth as it wasn’t on TV much…but still, I’ll take the Campbell-led PP over anything else we had prior to his arrival. But if it starts to tank again, I’m blaming that fucking Hossa guy.

by hoorock89 on Nov 25, 2009 2:03 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

right but that doesn’t take into acct second year improvements of Toews(10 more goals) and Kane (who scored 13 of his 25 goals last season on the PP)…and Versteeg for that matter..or even Barker playing the point quite a bit on the 1st PP unit in the 2nd half of last season. Pretty difficult to correlate the PP improvement to a singular player. Certainly he’s helped, but he’s not the singular reason.

Panda Fact

This creatrue subsists entirely on bamboo, a food source of such low nutritional value that the animal must spend virtually its entire waking life eating just to stay on the right side of starvation.

One side-effect of this is that pandas take frequent and prodigious shits.

Imagine the NHL as a sea of bamboo fields, just waiting to be devoured and shat out, to the joy of Cup-starved Chicago fans.

Maybe.

A Serious Question

Actually, a couple.

Being a lifetime Chicago fan I’m naturally inclined to expect the worst. So, even as I’m counting down the hours until game time tomorrow night like some kid waiting for Santa to visit, I’m wondering about things like, Hossa’s fitness level, team timing and chemistry on the ice, defensive assignments being missed, the powerplay being messed up (after we seemed to be getting it right finally), and a host of other issues that can arise when you throw a new person into what has been operating as a fairly well-oiled machine (most nights). What do y’all think it will look like out there tomorrow night?

Now I’m not expecting Hossa to screw things up for us, but I have to admit being a little afraid of putting him out there against the second-best/best? team in the league for his very first game with his new mates. (Is it too early for me to declare the sky falling?)

by Preacher000 on Nov 24, 2009 11:04 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn't expect too much in the first few weeks

This is a guy who hasn’t played real hockey since June, and every player will tell you that there is no way to simulate actual game speed. He’ll probably miss a scoring chance or two. He’ll probably get beat to some pucks. But I would expect him to get up to speed in a few weeks.

That said, it won’t stop people from posting garbage here Friday about Hossa being a bust unless he scores 4 goals, 2 assists, breaks his stick on Heatley’s face, fires a puck through Nabokov’s mask, and fucks Patrick Marleau’s wife. In the first period.

Chicagoan in the Lou.

by Mike Martin on Nov 25, 2009 1:17 AM CST up reply actions   1 recs

But

That’s what we brought him in to do, right? If he doesn’t I say we offer him as part of a package deal with Huet in order to free up cap room and resign the players who actually matter. I heard about this Antii Niemi guy, who apparently had a shutout the other night, maybe we could trade with his team and get a real goalie for once.

wait what?

by pepe126 on Nov 25, 2009 1:30 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe we can throw

in Campbell too,and Toews Kane and Keith! So that way we dont have to sign anybody, and we can save a whole shit load of cash!!!hahahahha..on a more serious note, hockeybuzz is claiming the Hawks are dealing Sharp to the Maple Leafs e3….hahahaha on a more serious note hahahahaha i think that is pure contradiction using the word serious and hockey buzz in the same sentence…..oh man i hope i didn’t jinx the hawks and sharp by laughin at hockey buzz

That is a ridiculous thing to say.

How is he expected to fuck Marleau’s wife when she’s in the box and he’s on the ice? I fully expect that to happen 2 months from now, but the first game back? Absurd.

rotator cuff injury

am i correct in saying that hossa’s injury is not one that would generally be re-aggravated by impact (like getting checked)? I know nothing about sports injuries but it seems like hossa probably won’t need play cautiously due to his shoulder.

by SLoop on Nov 25, 2009 9:49 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Considering we’ve been playing so well without him, I’d say there’s pretty much a zero chance he’d be coming back if he had to play at all cautiously. He and the Hawks have talked the entire time about not rushing, letting the shoulder recover completely, and this return is right on schedule with the recovery time mentioned at the time of the surgery.

My only concern is stuff like groin injuries. I hope Q limits his ice time, that he gets just 15 minutes or so. But I doubt that happens. I would be surprised, though, to see him on the PK right away.

but how do we match up against the other lines they got, I really don’t know that team that well, beside Nabakov, which I feel we light up every time we see him.

Toews and Kane

had the most minutes of any forwards in the very defensive minded Vancouver game so I’d be surprised if Hossa’s minutes were limited just because of who his linemates are.

On a humorous note...

I have a friend who still has a huge hard-on for Havlat. (Last season was his first one watching the hawks, go figure.) I tried to get him to take a bet that Hossa would finish the regular season with more games played than Marty. That’s spotting him 19 games. He still refused. A bet on total points was out of the question, because that Minnesota offense is broker than an ’86 Fiero, and Hossa has the keys to the Ferrari.

"never takes a shift off"

You didn’t see him play in the 07-08 season before he got traded from Atlanta, did you?
Granted, it was because he wanted out, but acting like a baby just to get shipped wasn’t very kind of him. Glad to see he realized what a pot of crap Detroit really is.

His last season in Atlanta? When he scored 100 points?

by ChicoMaki on Nov 25, 2009 12:15 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I would assume he meant the year where he got dealt to the Pens at the deadline. Hossa had like 55 points in 65 games with Atlanta. The best part is, he wasn’t even trying that season, and was still almost a point-per-game player pretty much by accident. He’s freaking awesome and Hawks fans shouldn’t have to worry about him doing what he did in Atlanta.

A possible homophobic comment?

On a day when homosexuality in hockey is a hot topic among hockey writers?

Interesting.

Oh come on … Thor? Anyone? You there? This is one of the better comments I’ve ever come up with, as pathetic as that may be. Plus, I got a “… huh?”

Just didn't see it yet.

It’s like he doesn’t even understand that we’re making fun of him. It really takes a lot of the enjoyment out of it—but not enough to stop doing it.

NOW STOP IT RIGHT HERE

Tallon

In the midst of all this excitement, I want to take a second to think about Dale. He may or may not be primarily responsible for the grade-school math behind our cap, but you just can’t deny his ballsy deals are among the top reasons for all of us getting so excited about the season so far, and about tonight in particular.

May he enjoy the pasture.

I agree tonight is the total culmination

 of Tallon’s work………………..Now doesn’t Tallon become number 1 recruited G.M. to build a winner?
