Will There Be More People At Whirlaway Than In The Stands?: Hawks at Yotes Preview and Thread

Chicago Blackhawks at Phoenix Coyotes, Nov 5, 2009 8:00 PM CST

Images_medium  vs. Wile_e_coyote_medium
GAMETIME:  8pm Central
TV/Radio:  CSN, WGN 720
OPPONENT BLOG:  Five For Howling
WHERE YOU ARE WATCHING:  At The Whirlaway with us, silly

This'll be an eerie flashback for Hawks fans.  The Men of Four Feathers playing in front of barely 4,000 fans in an absolutely dead building.  Except this time, the Hawks will be wearing white and not red, and it won't be the UC.  We've come so far.

The Hawks absolutely fustigated the Yotes last season, winning all four games by a combined score of 20-4.  The high point clearly was one of former coach Wayne Gretzky's vagina bleeding everywhere, culminating in him sending his goons after known-thug Cristobal Huet.  Or maybe it was Matt Walker dropping longtime overrated guy Ed Jovanovski like a bag of hammers.  Whatever, these games were a walk.

It won't be tonight.  The Yotes are off to a flyer this season, and unlike their opponent last night -- the Lanche, the Lanche -- the numbers suggest this isn't a fluke.  They've been getting incredible goaltending from both Ilya Bryzgalov (I didn't even have to look up the spelling of that!) and Jason Labarbera (owner of maybe the best mask in the league.  Hetfield, Vedder, and The Ultimate Warrior?  This dude clearly passed out in my dorm room at some point).  Bryz got the start last night in Denver, so we wouldn't be shocked to see ol' Barby in net tonight. This team sure don't score much though.  Scottie Upshall is their leading forward with four goals.  That's Scottie Upshall.  Their d-corps still contains Adrian Aucoin and James Vandermeer (or as he used to be known, the Wisniewski Prequel), which means it just can't be all that good.

Hey, remember when the Hawks played a game?  Cuz I don't!  Seems like forever since our beloved were on the ice in anger.  Toews won't play tonight, per Kuc, which is fine.  Get him completely healthy, it's a long season.  Eager also won't suit up.  Toews might make tomorrow's game in Colorado, and if not you can be sure he'll be ready for the homestand that follows.

This one has the makings of another one of those nights where the Hawks fire a lot of rubber and have a goalie stand on his head to keep it close.  The Yotes are much better drilled under Dave Tippet than they were under Gretz, but this is still a team the Hawks skated circles around last year, and there hasn't been that much change.  It'll take a period to shake off the rust, and hopefully it's all clear from there.

Remember, we'll be at Whirlaway tonight for a blog-watch.  Fullerton just west of Kedzie.  Be there or be stupid.  McClure will be both.

It’s always nice to see this guy. I watched him and his brothers finish 1-2-3 in PIM when they played in the ECHL

Wish I was at the Whirlaway.

That sounds like a great time! Wish I knew about it sooner. Almost gametime and a bar in Logan Park beats the hell out of the high prices at Wild Wings. I will kind of miss Gretz’s sour lemon face that he makes at every penalty call.

Those were some fun games last year.

I can’t help but feel last year’s domination coupled with the absence of our concussed captain and friends will lead to a letdown tonight.

Still, I have hope. I’m going with Sharp as my Pick to Click tonight. He has read the online criticism of his play the past few days. He is hurt. He is ready to prove the unwashed masses wrong.

I be on my green like Irish Spring.

I'm looking at Versteeg!

Though without Gretzky there to flash his vag and yell sweet nothings at Versteeg! between whistles this year I may be wrong.

BAD MENTAL IMAGE

My vote is for Sharp.
Bold prediction: Madden finally buries a SHG.
Other Bold Prediction: We actually score on the PP.

Score on the PP?

There’s a fine line between being bold and reckless.

madden and shorties

Whenever he gets shorty chances, he always looks like he’s thinking something like “Too old for this shit wtf are these kids making me do”… or at least that was my impression til I found out he holds the Devils’ franchise record for most shorties or something, so now that’s one of the things I’m waiting to happen.

If he doesn’t score on a shorty tonight, can I blame you for it? :P

Madden will never be too old to kill penalties — he was engineered for this purpose in life.

Nope, that’s why it’s a Bold Prediction, gahaha.

if I remember correctly

I’m more likely to think VERSTEEG! will score a shortie first. He may not be the most conventional of penalty killers, but he puts more pressure on opposing goalies shorthanded than the Hawks have with the PP so far.

I have some faith. We have too much talent to suck at the PP forever. But at the same time, how can this much talent suck this bad in this current state?

I will probably wander around lost for most of the first period

and then be blown into the Whirlaway by a gust of wind. Should I bring my blinged-out name tag, or would that put me in the same category as McClure?

Vandy, Langer, Vrbata, Aucoin … are those four the only ex-Hawks on the roster for Phoenix? There could be some interesting drinking games tonight.

Time to take this dog for a walk

Or roll up a newspaper and beat him with it, either way this is a game where the Hawks meet an opponent that they dominated last year and should do so tonight. Eventhough Bryzgalov played last night I fully expect him to be the master of the mesh house again tonight, although if Tippett looks at his stats from last year against the Hawks he may think otherwise.
Look for a big game from Versteeg and timley contributions from Kane and Sharp. Don’t be suprised if Seabrook notches one tonight as I got a feelin’ that tonight’s going to be his night. Huet will be solid as the deserted dogs don’t posses much of an offensive attack.
Could we see a vaunted attack from the PP? They’ve had a week to fix it so it should be O.K., right? Look for ‘the frog crusher’ Ladd to get his due on the man-advantage tonight for maybe, just maybe Torchetti and Quenneville have finally realized that Kopecky doesn’t belong on the Ice Hogs power-play unit let alone the Hawks.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

good sign?

For what it’s worth, one of Huet’s three shutouts last season was in the desert. It was the one where Walker KO’d Jovo and then Fedorek tried to run Huet behind the goal when it was 6-0. Oh, and Burish was a +4 in that game. Good times, good times.

More financial troubles?

Looks like the Coyotes, Predators, and Islanders have more company in terms of franchises in financial disarray. According to fanhouse.com the Jackets have reportedly lost close to $12 million last season and that’s with them making the playoffs last year. Which begs the question, how long does the NHL continue to operate under a capped system when there are teams losing money that are keeping the big spenders cap ceiling form increasing? Interesting to see what happens in 2011. Does it go the MLB route? Or does the NHL go the NFL route?

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

i'm not too familiar with the inner workings of sports leagues

but wouldn’t eliminating the capped system hurt the money losing teams as player salaries would increase?

I feel like this is

the first game where we’re really going to feel the absence of Eager and Burish. We didn’t just beat them last year we took their manhood and if they’ve got any pride they should want revenge. Buff and Brouwer are going to have to step up tonight. Brouwer was kind of flat in the Montreal game, and Seabrook was hesitant to get physical during that scrum in front of the net where the Habs went after Keith. He may be a little trigger shy with that recent concussion. It would also be nice to see Frazier be the mean one that he was at times last year, he’s overdue for a reason to notice him.

4-on-3 PP to start the 2nd could we see a goal? They only way they will is if they actually battle for the puck and have some support. Kane vs. 2 defencemen isn’t going to work as now I can see why Kopecky is on the PP.
Overall 1st period was Guh. Had a bad feeling about this game due to the father and son’s trip which had been a disaster for other teams, so why would the Hawks be any different?

I'm gonna go ahead and blame the first period on the long layoff.

Hopefully the Hawks can get back to playing the way they were before the break.

All that talk last year about Campbell's value quarterbacking the PP....

….and look at how terrible it is. They have a rush, he carries it in, doesn’t get a shot while the forwards are waiting to be sprung, loses the puck behind the goal line, Coyotes clear the zone because he’s out of position and they have to start the rush all over again.

Yeah, I blame him.

by rsievert on Nov 5, 2009 10:18 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Bingo

He doesn’t want to play defense, he wants to play center. I say let him. Put Hendry back at D and let Campbell play up front where he wants to. I mean he does it anyway.

by runningquicklynowhere on Nov 5, 2009 10:31 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

He does dump it in. It’s the forwards that have no urgency to retrieve the puck as the puck support ont he PP has been dreadful.

I swear I counted at least a dozen times tonight where Campbell kept the puck instead of dumping it, skated to the boards by the circle, and promptly turned it over.

by runningquicklynowhere on Nov 5, 2009 10:34 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That was Versteeg for most of the night who still insists in carrying in the puck instead on dumping it in. Outside of his goal Versteeg was annoying to say the least tonight but at least there was effort from Versteeg unlike many others on the Hawks tonight.

I agree

but I am sure that is what he is doing. Need a coach to step up and make the call to have him sit, cause any player you actually want on your team is still gona try to play regardless of the injury.

by runningquicklynowhere on Nov 5, 2009 10:36 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

In November? I hardly doubt that. If Bolland is that seriously hurt, as many on here claim, then he wouldn’t be playing. The Hawks wouldn’t jeopardize any further injury just to take Toews place in the 14th game of the season.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

by hawks61 on Nov 5, 2009 10:42 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

i think we're just trying to figure out what's going on with him

There was obviously something wrong by the third period— like I said, he was taken off special teams and Versteeg started taking his FOs. Later in the period (my friend was watching the stats like a hawk as neither of us had the feed), Bolland started missing shifts as well.

by chiblackhawks on Nov 5, 2009 10:54 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Then he must have re-aggravated his back injury tonight and will have to be re-evaluated tomorrow to see if his condition is still the same.

With that said, I hardly doubt that if he was injured he would still be playing just to take Toews place as it would make no sense to put him out there just to make it worse for 2pts. in November.

Campbell was terrible tonight

Go back and watch the 2nd and 3rd goals and see how flatfooted and out of position Soupy is on both goals. A couple other times he almost got burned by pinching up too far in the offensive zone. I don’t think Q needs to do anything too drastic, I just think that Soupy had a lousy game. PP is still funny like a fuckin’ clown’s shoes and there is no urgency at all displayed by either line especially in the transition game. The last PP at the end of the 2nd per. looked o.k.

A) Yes we did.

B) When it comes to turnovers you might want to point the finger at Barker instead of Campbell all the time. Just sayin’. Don’t mind the 2 out there especially when the Hawks are down 2 goals as early as they were. When leading late in the 3rd? No, but when trailing? Yes.

On Campbell

No, not a good game for Campbell. Made a few bad passes, did turnover the puck and did not take care of his man on a few occasions, one ending in a goal. He also got completely out skated on a rush that almost ended in a 2 on 0. Campbell is not worth his paycheck. I am shocked to read comments that Campbell is superior in any way over Keith. (Though, for the most part Campbell has been playing better this year)
Once the Hawks have Hossa, Toews and Eager in the line-up again, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Bolland out for a few games.

It would help if the rest of the guys on the ice, besides Kane, would try to at least get the puck and put themselves in positions to score. Campbell isn’t the only person to blame the lack of success on the PP.

The score could have been worse

I thought it was pretty ironic that he got caught NOT going down early. He came out of the net and challenged on a few plays and overall I thought he had a decent game. Yeah, he needs to bailout his D once in awhile when they blow it and he has yet to do that. Still, compared to the start of the season, I think he is playing well enough for us to win most nights.

frustrating game

0-6 on the power play, my god

Toews is out, Bolland certainly isn’t stepping up………I hope it is because he isn’t 100%. In fact, the Bolland, Ladd, Brouwer line was flat out invisible tonight.

Versteeg with the uber-whiff on the kane to dunc to steeg setup

Huet hot garbage on the first goal, and like a fish out of water on the third goal

Just a rage inducing loss overall

Plus side, Kopecky had a noticeably nice game, Kane with some fantastic playmaking as usual especially if Buff buries that rocket in the third

by hackerar on Nov 5, 2009 10:42 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

God I miss Eager

Seabrook and Hendry seemed to be the only people hitting tonight. And Brouwer a little. Just a lifeless game full of not trying. Someone needed to step up and be physical and put some life in that game and no one did. And there was a lot of bad play but Versteeg was just awful. And tomorrow when it’s Ebbett’s turn to go over the boards can we just play with four instead? I don’t understand why he’s getting more ice time than Frazier, who I thought had a good game in very limited minutes.

by Scott13 on Nov 5, 2009 10:47 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

And that might be the worst part that Hendry, a defenceman playing forward, was one of the Hawks better forwards tonight. Thought Byfuglien was a force in the 3rd as well to go along with Frasier and Kane.
Once Toews returns on Monday may this, hopefully, be the end of the massively-failed Ebbett experiment. He doesn’t play a physical game, wins face-offs, and skate well enough to be a constant threat.
Diagrams are needed to show Versteeg how to shoot the puck in the offensive zone as he often resembles Kovalev in that he thinks that he can go 1-on-4 all the time.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

By the way...

Bryzgalov was ridiculously sick in net tonight. I think I counted 2 posts and 2 more near misses with a lot of traffic and Buff in front of him. So, hat’s off to you… you little Russian desert dog. Hawks get to see Craig Anderson tomorrow night and he has been as hot as can be lately.

He was ridiculous

Still, there were a lot of times the Hawks just didn’t rush the net before or after shots. That’s gotta change

I'm not saying this is relevant, but

Blackhawks are 1-3 when they play on Thursdays.

Good thing we only play one more this month and it’s against Calgary.

Welp,

I guess I always wanted to know what an artistic rendition of an abortion on skates looked like.

You’ll see them next Friday. They’re called the Toronto Maple Leafs.

maybe I should save this for the next post...

…but I’m back from the Whirlaway now and read through this game thread, sigh. I guess going out to the bar was less depressing than drinking alone and watching this game online!
Nice to meet some of the people I’ve been reading (and there were a bunch whose names I didn’t catch this time), thanks for the meetup.
