Desert Sessions
Well, that could have turned out better. The long layoff seemed to have a slight effect on the Hawks, but not much. Certainly nothing that is significant enough to pin the loss on. A few notes from the game:
- After being skewered by most people, myself included, Tomas Kopecky had himself a heck of a game. He was a constant presence in front of Ilya Bryzgalov, and the goaltender interference call that he drew was soft, as a screaming Edzo let the viewing audience know immediately. If the Hawks continue to get this kind of effort out of Kopecky, the fourth line might regain last year's form.
- While Patrick Sharp was seemingly everywhere last night, he's got to bury the chances he has. Granted Bryzgalov wasn't giving much to shoot at last night, but true scorers pot at least one of those, and missing the net entirely on the breakaway is not acceptable. It was pleasant to see Sharp creating his own shots for once, though.
- As bad as the power play has been, that's how good the penalty kill has been. The Hawks PK kept the Phoenix man-advantage off the board, which is actually saying something, as they've been a top-10 unit all year. Even Patrick Kane was solid in his own zone while shorthanded before setting up the Hawks' lone goal.
- Dave Bolland was completely invisible. If it's his back, as soon as Toews returns, he needs to be shelved.
- Niklas Hjarmalsson continues to incorporate more and more of the physicality he was rumored to have.
- Fix. The. Power. Play.
Once again, thanks to everyone who joined us at the Whirlaway last night, and to Sergio and Maria for having us. More to come later in the day regarding the game against the Avalanche tonight.

Hmm
Kane totally missed the net on his breakaway as well but no mention of it. Carry on with the Sharp bashing…

nice shot at kane
Kaner hit the crossbar and had a guy cutting off any move to the backhand. Sharp had time to do whatever he could cook up and he missed the net……big difference.
The reason no one is bashing Kane is because it is obvious that he is this team’s only consistent source of offense, and he should have had three assists last night. He had a beautiful setup to Buff, who smoked the post, and kane had a nice pass to Dunc which Dunc flipped to Versteeg and Versteeg whiffed on an angle shot that he should’ve buried.

Bar or no bar, it was a missed breakaway but jeep making excuses for the Golden One.

and you keep thinking
that sharp is more valuable than kane. Good thing you aren’t the GM. And good work not responding to the rest of my post which is legit so I can see why you’d ignore it.

Wow, god forbid one mentions Kane missing a breakaway and eveybody gets their balls twisted. Go wipe your pussies you sensitive broads.
I never said who I think more valuable or dismissed that Kane has been a threat just about every time he’s on the ice, therefore the rest of your post doesn’t warrant a response. The topic I brought up was missed breakaways.

great....just great
now I have to spend the rest of the day trying to figure out how I am going to both untwist my balls and wipe my pussy.

Really?
If Kane fucks up, we’ll call him on it… I still haven’t really seen either of the breakaway attempts from last night so I can’t say who should have buried what chance but right now it’s clear that Kane is the Hawks best player on the ice just about every game..
check um out
my description is pretty accurate, Kane didn’t have any room to move to the backhand so he picked a spot and tried to snipe it. Sharp had alot more room to make a move.
I’m not ripping on sharp, breakaway misses happen, but I’m certainly going listen to someone rip on Kane when he’s played much better than any of our other forwards.
"If you're scared, go buy a dog" - Stacey King
How the fuck is stating Kane missed a breakaway ripping in him!? Get a grip.

first of all
sarcastically calling him the golden one is ripping him.
Second, McClure said sharp missing the net on the breakaway is not acceptable, you said, what about kane missing the net, and I simply replied that he didn’t miss the net. I also noted that sharp had alot more room (than Kane) to get a good shot off, which made missing the net worse. Everyone was calm until you said I was making excuses for the “Golden One”.
"If you're scared, go buy a dog" - Stacey King
Fine take the Golden One comment out as it was sarcastic. But he still missed the net man. Hitting the pipe or crossbar is not a shot on goal. Is it splitting hairs, yeah maybe it is. And yes Sharp had more time, ok? Probably too much time to overthink it…
Whatever, perhaps we should direct out rage in the direction of the PP which blows harder than a Singapore whore?

hear hear
too much of the PP is being run through the point. Shots with bodies at the net are a good thing, but we have the skill to play a puck movement style and let our playmakers find an opening, sometimes that opening may end up back at the point, but with a much more open shot.
"If you're scared, go buy a dog" - Stacey King
and another thing
Our Dmen are so useless carrying the puck on the PP right now that Q has resorted to dropping the puck back to Kaner, I liked the move by Q to mix things up, but it’s only further proof that right now, this offense runs through Patrick Kane.
"If you're scared, go buy a dog" - Stacey King
Which is exactly why a Kane-Madden-Buff line flat out won’t work. Kane already has a huge offensive load to carry, he could definitely use some help. Maybe Sharp? Bolland or Toews, if either was healthy? Madden and Buff have been playing well (more the former than the latter) but they’re both better suited to roles where any goals they score are a bonus, not an expectation (like they are if you are Kane’s linemate).

Disagree
I watched Campbell carry clean over the line 4 straight times on their 3rd period PP. He is the only guy on the team who can do that consistently, however. There is such a huge drop off in our ability to carry clean into the offensive zone when he’s not on the ice. All the other D-men seem clueless.
I am the first to bash Kane....but geez
Buf had a worst game I have ever seen out of him…he was getting demolished . Phoenix looked like wat we were last year……flyin and hittin………How can ya play so bad in front of their fathers and other guest? Me thinks they might have partied a bit much the night b4 with thier pops. I will put that game in the toilet and flush.
"Let 'em say all those nice things," he says, "but I know my mistakes, and I make plenty of them.-Bobby Orr
I think BUF needs a night off being a healthy scratch might do him some good and re-adjust his piss poor efforts of late..Didn’t Q do that last year with some good results?
why yes Q did do that
….time for Mr Buf’s annual benching…..where’s the Commitment to the Indian?…………..
"Let 'em say all those nice things," he says, "but I know my mistakes, and I make plenty of them.-Bobby Orr
what about Versteeg then?
he had 2 shots where he had at least half of the net open and had the puck roll of his stick each time.

What a fucking jag. Not that it really had much of an effect on the game, but that cockbag played one of the cheapest shit games last night. Smoking Versteeg in the sack with his stick, throwing some uppercut body shots (forget who that was against) in a scrum, and then a straight jack to Kane’s face right at the end of the game. What a stroke.
I thought he gave Kopecky a stick to the face
somewhere in there too.
"The only thing worse than making a mistake is justifying it!"
Alrighty
didn’t get to watch the game, but losing 3-1 isn’t good, considering tonight they play the avs…kinda disappointed they lost, actually really disappointed….this team needs toews and hossa, otherwise they aren’t goin anywhere….how was huet?powerplay awful again?anyone else scared that the Hawks aren’t that good?
HockeyBuzz us claiming the Hawks wont resign Kaner and Toewser, and that Kane will be goin to play at home in Buffalo
Yep
I’m sure the Hawks will let their 21 year old captain walk at the end of the season, sounds like a plan.
Before the season, I actually thought if any of the 3 had to be let go, I wanted it to be Kane. But the way he’s been playing this season….there’s no way.
Is it me or...
Did a lot of the hawks look sluggish? There were a lot of times that I caught myself saying to my dad… “Doesn’t it look like their legs are moving but they aren’t going anywhere on that surface tonight” The ice just looked like again they were skating on a pond at the end of the season.
It's THE GOAALLLIEEE!!!!!
No coach ever
incorporated the off chance of a breakaway as a strategy to win a game. The Bryz was spectacular – it ain’t gonna happen every night. It was one of those games where Eager might have been a bigger factor than Hossa, had either of them been out there. I mentioned Kopecky in the game thread (first period) because he really was doing something for a change. Sometimes it’s not “pretty” that wins games, and I believe last night was one of those times.
Another way to look at it (and win) is this; FIX. THE. FUCKING. POWER. PLAY – NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!
Even a solid Mite C plan and we win last night. This is absolutely ridiculous and it has to end now. Six fucking power plays with nothing to show for it. We continue to sink in the league standings here with only 8 teams showing thumbs further up their asses than us, which is pretty phenomenal to ponder if you took in last night’s gong show and questionable line choices on the PP.
Okay, I’m visibly shaking now and the coffee is only partially to blame. Let’s get something going. I don’t care who we have in the lineup – if we don’t get a power play, we can all go home and put pencils to the salary cap issue for next year.
Sheesh.
"Call Detroit, tell dem... BULLSHIT!"
9 for 52 on the PP to date this year
Even my horrible math skills tell me that’s below 20% and getting worse with every game.
"Call Detroit, tell dem... BULLSHIT!"
I almost wonder if our PP would work better if we didn’t insist on parking someone in front of the net. We’re not even really getting shots through that can be deflected. Perhaps moving that guy (usually Buff or Kopecky) behind the net or off in a corner somewhere may spread the defense a little bit more and allow a few more shots through. Thoughts?
http://accordingtwomey.blogspot.com
the setup you are describing
is what they’ll probably go back to when Toews gets back. Kane on the right wing boards distributing or dishing down to toews on the side of the net who will either attempt a stuff or find the open man. When Toews and Hossa get back, the power play needs to be all hands on deck…..Kane, Toews, and Hossa on the same power play line and only send the second PP line out there when you have to. It’ll be tough not having a right handed short on the left side, but Q and Torch need to figure out some plays which will utilize these three on one PP line.
"If you're scared, go buy a dog" - Stacey King
Speaking of which???
Any word on our boy for tonight? It would put a fresh spin against such a formidable opponent to have the Tazer back in the lineup.
"Call Detroit, tell dem... BULLSHIT!"
About the PP
With our current configuration, everything is coming back to the point, and all the other teams know it. Also, D-men figure out pretty quickly that Campbell will not take a shot. So when all the Hawks want to do is take shots from the point, and Campbell doesnt shoot, this means all you (as an opposing D) have to concentrate on is the “other” D-man. It’s elementary.
So far this year, the Hawks have lost every game I've failed to watch.
And won every game I’ve attended (3-0).
Could I be the Secret Weapon?
I be on my green like Irish Spring.
Nice try
But we aren’t paying your airfare.
After every game, we say the same stuff, “They have got to stop trying to carry the puck past four defenders at the blue line”. And yet, there is no change whatsoever. We are losing to teams with less talent because our guys do the same thing every night and do it poorly. Despite the talent this team has, even with Toews out, we are currently not very hard to beat if the other team is willing to work hard and commit a primarily defensive strategy. With the current power play problems, committing penalties against us is actually an opportunity to kill two minutes of clock time without having to work very hard or worry about icing. Changing who is on the PP seems like part of the answer, but what I see right now is a lot of laziness and sense of entitlement.
With a win tonight, the Hawks will climb back to .500 right?
I’m sure Dave Tippett’s strategy last night was for Phoenix to take penalties and let the Hawks fire off 13 shots on his goalie so he could kill two minutes without worrying about icing.
And please elaborate for us this sense of entitlement you’re seeing.

entitlement
The comment about the power play was sarcasm, mostly. Obviously that was not a planned strategy but it did kinda work out that way. They kept stacking the blue line, the Hawks kept trying to skate it through and the Yotes kept poking it back out. The Hawks did get something going a couple of times only to get shut down by a hot goalie. Still, it’s not like we threaten every time we get a man advantage and at times we barely get a shot on goal.
As for laziness and entitlement, this is what I mean. I don’t see the same fire right now that they were showing at their best last season and during the playoffs. Looking at comments here before we played Dallas, Nashville and the Yotes, I just felt there was this attitude that we deserved to win because we are a better team. I get that this is a blog and the Hawks are a hockey team and that there is no reality based link between to the two, but the on ice effort reminded me of the talk here.To keep doing the same thing that isn’t working does seem like entitlement to me because it’s like saying “I shouldn’t have to alter my game because deep down I know I’m better than that guy who keeps knocking the puck off my stick”.
Less talent stacked teams are going to play us with a trap and chippy play every night until we prove it’s not going to deter us. Even without Toews, I think we are capable of playing much better than we are.
Gotta agree with El Duque. The power play is grotesque right now, and I’m perplexed as to why we haven’t seen different looks, Toews or no Toews. I’ve seen slow and tentative starts, but I’ve rarely seen laziness from this team, and I don’t know what you mean by sense of entitlement. I doubt these guys feel entitled to anything, not even guaranteed ice time.
Or Hossa or no Hossa
Bashing the Hawks power play seems like the popular thing to do these days(rightfully so on some nights), but they got plenty of solid chances last night within those 13 shots on net.
Yes, they had a couple pp’s that were pretty ugly but they also had a couple where the puck rarely left the Coyotes zone. Sometimes, you have to crawl before you can walk. They keep getting 13 shots on net with the man advantage, you’ll see pucks hitting twine.

Campbel and PP
Connect the dots.
Plus, he loafed after a puck in his own end, then chipped it around the boards to avoid taking a hit, then they scored.
Not a hater, but I think he has gotten off liightly this year. He’s looked better because he’s been paired with our newest d-stud.
The guy's who still recovering from the lashing he received last year
is getting off easy. If you really think he’s getting off lightly, you’re not looking that closely at the comments.

Fair enough...

Dude
My brother Mike said he attended the last home game with your crew.
Enjoy your site and your humurous contributions here.
Scared?
Cambell seems to be always ready to leave the offensive blue line and come back to help,on the PP.As if hes going to be a saviour on a shorthanded breakaway. Is this Q or his idea.Last year he played like a forward on the PP,now he seems very tentative about goin in.
5-on-5 is the new 5-on-4
I don’t have an explanation for this, it’s just an observation.
Many, many times this year I’ve found myself watching the Hawks control the puck in the offensive zone, almost effortlessly (obviously not, but it looks this way) and toying with the opponent. Cycling through the corner, finding an open defenseman, firing it across the blue line to a d-man with miles of space around him. I’m forced to count the number of opponents on the ice because it LOOKS like a power play.
And yet, when we actually outnumber the opponent, that flow is gone. Is it effort? Is it mindset? Is it a rigid adherence to PP “strategy” that shakes them out of their game? I know the entry into the offensive zone has been a problem (which I also can’t understand, maybe it will take 20,000 at the UC screaming ’DUMP IT IN!" in unison when they cross the red line), but when they get into the zone, there is no momentum.
It should be easier with a man advantage, it logically has to be easier with the man advantage. What is different, that makes the even-strength situation seem like the PP, and the PP seem like even strength?
Hoping for a Niemi start tonight
Got to get him in some time
Lets Go Hawks!
I mean
in a way i understand that the Hawks are missing prolly their top 2 players in Hossa and Toews, and when u look at the Penguins without Malkin they haven’t been as tough, and Wash already has lost a game without Ovie….i understand injuries are part of the game,i’m just hopin that this team will be that good when toewser and hossa get healthy and return,i guess i am afraid of a let down even when they come back….anyone understand me?hahaha..WOW!post loss depression lol!
Also, regarding the power play...
…let’s keep in mind that, despite a boatload of world-class talent on the first unit, the Penguins finished 20th in the NHL last year with the man advantage.
Don't look now...
The SCUM have caught us and we are ninth in the Conference…I am not going to say tonight is a must win..but with the emergence of teams that were thought to be dead…a nice run of a few game win streak would be a nice thing!!!
I've left my comments out for a while but...
reading some posts above, I have to agree that Kane is the only player who has been consistent. And if he hit the pipe so what, I will give him a pass because of his assisting through out the season. He has been giving his 100 percent, thats the way I see it. The poweplay blows because we are trying to look to cute out there, they should do what ever they were doing last year,it worked. they need to stop passing in circles and just have them creep up more, they are to spread out. They brought in Cambell and paid him big$$$$ to play both ends and he is suppose to be our QB at the powerplay, but he to me is a big big dissappointment. He will be gone by the trade deadline.
