Well, he got the first save, but...

Hmm, seemed like a good idea at the time, we'll have to rethink the Dad's Trip next season based on results, though.

I'm going to take a page from Sassone and blame Patrick Kane.  Feels good.  Anyway, on to the madness.  It started so well.  The Hawks really took it to Colorado in the first 15, winning every battle, getting to every loose puck, and creating chance after chance.  They were rewarded with a 2-0 lead, and one of them was a power-play goal!  Can you imagine?  Buff was able to blast one by Anderson with a good screen from Kopecky, even though Buff was doing just about everything wrong on that shot.  They got a second on nifty work from Kane and Versteeg resulting in Keith burying one top shelf while he was going backwards.  Maybe they should have tried that more often.

But the foot came off the gas at the end of the first, and after Kane and Keith got a little goofy clearing the zone Seabrook was forced to ice the puck.  The ensuing action saw Niemi give up a too-juicy rebound that Cal O'Reilly eventually poked home.

It got no better to start the second.  The power play pulled out a new trick, trying its damndest to give up two shorties in one go, but came up a second short.  I don't know why Q is trying to prove himself a genius by putting a forward on the point, but it bit  him on the ass.  At least Sharp and Bolland can at least, y'know, move.  Buff can't, and David Jones blew right by him.  Niemi thought he'd add to the stupidity by going to a knee when Jones was at the redline, and he easily put it over him.  (Sidenote here:  Not only was Buff on the point, but he was back there with Barker, who serves the same purpose!  They're both triggermen.  At least put Buff with Keith or Campbell so there's some distribution and mobility back there.  But maybe I'm overdosing on logic here.) At the end of said power play, O'Reilly got so loose behind the Hawks defense he must think he has Herpes, and he was able to score off his own rebound.  Woof.

After a timeout though, the Hawks once again turned the ice and were able to equalize when Ladd was right where he should be to pounce on a Sharp rebound.  You should look for rebounds from Sharp, god knows he aint' putting anything in these days.

The 3rd was just a mess, and the officials decided to take it off too.  I understand letting the players decide the game, but Hejduk got away with interference that led directly to a scoring chance, and board that could've injured a player.  Sharp was hauled down on his breakaway, and Campbell hooked a Colorado player trying to start a counter.  That's just too much.  Anyway, at least Niemi didn't get his head down after some bad goals and made some big saves.

OT and the shootout are self explanatory.  Just a flip of the coin, although can someone name the last time Sharp scored on a breakaway, penalty shot, or shootout?

I'm sure some people are going to go all Chicken Little, and 1 point out of 4 on this trip is not acceptable.  But, three of our top 6 are out, as well as 2/3rds of one of the league's best 4th lines.  Maybe when spring rolls around Phoenix and Colorado will be in lottery territory, but right now they are two of the hottest teams in the league.  Sadly, a team that's even hotter comes into town on Monday, the Kings.  But Captain Marvel will be back for that, and Hossa on the trip that follows.  It's the first week of November, let's try and keep our heads.

Notes:

-Kopecky has had two solid games in a row, and is slowly working his way out of our doghouse.

-Ebbet also had his best game as a Hawk.  I know Hawks fans are getting annoyed with him, but he's just "a guy".

-Colin Fraser went 9 for 10 on draws tonight.  That's impressive.

-The Hawks need to figure out Bolland's back, and right now.  They can't nurse him through the season, having him miss a practice here and there and have him perform at 60%.  If he needs a month, then he should get one now.  If it needs surgery, well, that probably ends his season, but this isn't working, is it?  He hasn't been near full strength all year, and I don't think it's a coincidence that the two games he's missed came in close proximity to long flights (the one home from Finland and out to Phoenix).  It's obviously a bigger problem than they are letting on, and needs to be sorted.

Big homestand next up, and with these poor results, the Hawks really need to take all 8 points.  It's doable.

Player of The Game

With two assists and more solid play, it's gotta be...

Guess I'm glad we squeaked out of the mini-road trip with a point

Niemi letting 3 goals out of 8 shots was not a pretty sight though. Kudos to him for holding on as the game progressed.

Sometimes it also helps to put things in perspective a bit. We weren’t up against last season’s Coyotes or Avs, and we certainly aren’t playing last season’s Hawks. No one’s got time for excuses but it’s early in the season (still) and we’ve got plenty to look forward to.

That being said, someone fix Bolland please? I don’t care if it means shelving him for the season— the boy can’t keep doing what he’s doing and expect to get better, though I guess that depends on what’s actually wrong. Some back problems, I’ve been told, aren’t necessarily solved by surgery alone.

What’s Eric Daze been up to of late? Anyone know? Get him to give Dave a call, share a story or two about the wisdom of resting backs.

That Sharpie is a clever guy

He knows he’s trade bait. He also knows that if he’s not putting the puck to net, no one will trade for him.

Tricky bastard…

bwahahaha

I had this theory. He and Kris are dealing with being trade bait very differently— Kris is making himself nearly indispensible, and Sharp is making himself invisible. Tsk tsk.

Much better effort

I complained about both effort and attitude after the Yotes game but I thought last nights effort was much better. Even with injuries, we should be competitive with the talent we have against good teams and the Avs right now are a very good team. I don’t care if the second goal was one second past the power play, it’s still two short handed goals in reality and on the same power play no less. That is unacceptable and it was what cost them the game. Still, for the majority of the game, the effort was there. They dumped when they needed to, they chased pucks down and set up some real good scoring chances.

They turned it around great from the Yotes to the Avs and now that the Dads trip is over, I hope they can take it up just one more notch. LA is currently another team you can’t let up on at all.

Buf did come up as a defenseman

So there is some sense, if Q insists on using a forward at point, that Buf should be the most competent of the lot to defend when necessary.
But Buf is slow and there seems to have been a good reason to get him off D.
At his size, he should be a Cam Neely reincarnation, or at least a feared physical presence. He’s not either.

There is still a shit ton of hockey to play.

December is going to be a great month, just wait.

I understand

that there is still a ton o hockey to be played, and technically the hawks didnt hit their stride last year until about late november, early december……i guess the difference this year is expectations….last year no one expected them to make it to the western conference finals, but this year we do…..again i reiterate that they have health issues, and a lot of them,i’m just worried because the West is tight this year….LA is good,Col,Phoe,Calgary etc….I guess another month or 2 and you will be able to tell how good this team will be,if by December they dont show improvement then i guess you can start worrying, even though i am a bit worried right now

The Hawks are on pace for a 44 win 99 point season which would more than enough to get in. Doubtful that the Kings, Avs, and Coyotes break the 100-point barrier as it’s way too early to draw up conclusions, case in point the Penguins last year at one point were 6 points behind the Leafs and over 10 points behind Montreal and ended up finishing 4th in the East while the Leafs missed and the Habs should’ve and lost 4 straight to the Bruins in the 1st round. It’s early.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

I agree with

you one hundred percent….i mean,it is very possible that when toews hossa and eager get back, for instance that the hawks go on a 6 or 7 game winning streak, then maybe lose a game, and win 3 or 4 in a row or something very similar, and that would make things a hell of a lot better….As far as what the Pens did last year, that is exactly what you want,to be playing your best hockey a week or two before playoff time….i would just like to see this team get healthy and see if they are for real….

i mean,i am gettin kinda pissed off stain up till 3 4 or 5 am and watchin these games online,i’m a chicagoan in europe, and the time differential is 7 hours chi-town time, and if i am gonna be up that late,i would like for the HAWKS to win, hahahahaha,i sound like a spoiled brat lol!!

No more Buff on the point

I’m really starting to question Q’s moves on the power play. First his experiment with Sharp on the point was a disaster, now he has Buff there with similar results!

We have two guys (Kopecky and Buff) who have the ability to screen the goalie. Both seem to do this job quite well. Why the fuck would you move one of your screeners (Buff) to the point on the PP when a) you know he can’t skate backward for shit and b) his passing ability is mediocre at best? Would it not make more sense to save Buff for another line so you have two PP lines with a goalie screener?

It took Buff almost an entire season to learn his role in front of the net. It also took him just as long to transition from defenseman to forward. I’m willing to bet it would take him the same amount of time to learn how to play the point on the PP.

by Sportsgal on Nov 7, 2009 9:13 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Im questioning a lot of Q's decisions right now

Maybe he is just waiting for his team to be healthy and then things will just fall into place, or maybe all the options he has are going to his head. Having Buf and Barker on the point together is just terrible. I have been a bit unnerved by some of the line combo’s as well. It has seemed obvious to me when people are jelling and then they are no longer on a line together. It was one of the issues last year, the Hawks had trouble getting used to set lines. But again, this could be due to injuries at the moment.

by Puckpowwow.com on Nov 7, 2009 11:05 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Right on Q

Right now is not the time to bring out the SlapChop on the line combinations. If anything they need time to gel and stay stationary even when things are going horribly wrong such as the case on Thursday in Glendale.
The PP is a mess and two people are to blame for that and they are Q and Torchetti. Both need to just continue to put the players that received the PP time in the playoffs and live with that. Hossa and Toews may be out but there is no need to start playing magician and have Byfuglien and Bolland at the points with Kopecky is front. If they want someone in front for the second PP unit why not try Ladd? To my recollection he was in front of the goaltender for two pretty big goals in the playoffs. Nothing against Kopecky, who I like, but this isn’t putting him in a position he is comfortable with or should be in. He is a checking forward and is best on the 4th line or with Madden and Brouwer with occasionally being placed on the PK unit.

Right now Q is coaching this team like a hot potato and the results on the ice are a reflection of that as there are too many times this team looks lost out there for no particular reason other than they have no idea who their linemates are going to be on any given shift.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

There is a pattern in Versteeg

Night after night he is the best weapon on the ice. The puck is going to start going in more for him in the near future.

Observations abound on the Hawks

Although it’s way too early to start pointing at the sky and wonder if it’s falling, it is early enough to start worrying about this team. Sure they’re without arguably their best 2 forwards in Toews and Hossa but what has happened to the rest of the core? Sharp couldn’t put the puck in the ocean right now which begs the question how did he ever get invited to the Canadian Oreintation Camp? Kane has been good, but not great which is not acceptable considering the paycheque he deems himself worthy of at season’s end. What ever happened to Versteeg? Is he a one year wonder or will he finally breakthrough? He defensive play is atrocious and holds no value to this team if can’t score or create anything offensively. Bolland, how serious is his back injury? If he needs surgery and is out for the season is Ebbett the answer? Based on results that answer would be a resounding no. If this team is to go as far as they expect to go then other players need to step up when called upon as it seems when either Toews or Keith are out of the lineup the Hawks tend to fold their tents.

No need to hit the panic button yet, but the case is open and it won’t be much longer before it’s pushed if things continue along at this rate for 8 wins in 15 games is very unacceptable for this group. With that said though the Hawks are still on pace for 44 wins and 99 points this season which would be more than enough to make the playoffs.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

“..for 8 wins in 15 games is very unacceptable for this group.”

I disagree. Eight wins in 15 games with a completely healthy version of “this group” would be unacceptable. I think it’s a pretty fair reflection of the group on the ice right now.

Can someone explain to me...

…how Kane got an assist on the Keith goal? Didn’t the sequence go Kane-Keith-Versteeg-Keith?

by Dr. Ice on Nov 7, 2009 1:02 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

That rule was changed a while back

Regardless of the sequence of who touches the puck when, it’s the last two guys to touch the puck before the goal scorer that gets an assist.

Cal O’Reilly? Seriously? That kind of treatment will get him scoring on you every game… :)

I thought your team played well tonight, could have gone either way. Very fun to watch.

I would pretty much do anything to get Keith on the Avs. That goal, wow.

I keep hearing Chicago is thinking about moving Sharp — he’d be a perfect fit on the Avs, slump or no. What would it take for a deal?

by thedoctor on Nov 7, 2009 1:04 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Stupid....

I have a huge problem with Quenneville’s SO choices; Buff, Barker, Brouwer? Really? You might as well send out the little kid from the Shoot The Puck contest!

He also must stop the forward on the point for the PP; it’s bad enough as is don’t add a player to it that’s out of position and uncomfortable. I do like Kopecky on the PP tho; he can park himself infront of the net and be our version of Holmstrom.

Barker hasn’t shown any improvement over last year so I wouldn’t mind seeing him and his contract leave.

Did anybody else see Sopel about minute and a half into the 3rd? The puck was up in the air and he spun around shrugging his shoulders like a big dummy…I grimace everytime he has the puck.

Why no Cambell? Yet Barker,Buf? Kopecky earned a little praise with some net presense during the game.

The great thing about hockey

is sometimes you lose games you played well enough to win. Good goaltending and bad luck can count for a lot.

I don’t have a problem with the way the Hawks played last night. A lot of talent didn’t dress and the ones that did gave a great, but not perfect effort, and came up short. It happens, and it’s going to happen again even when we get completely healthy and put a very talented team out there giving good effort.

I’ve dogged Ebbett harder than anyone and I thought he played well. I thought that the line of Madden, Kopecky and Brouwer was an all out hustle line that was very effective and reminiscent of some of those shifts that Burish/Eager/Frazier had last year. And Frazier had his best game of the season and was probably my player of the game. He dropped the gloves early, he was everywhere and he was mean as hell. Great effort. And Ladd’s a warrior.

The Phoenix game was an embarrassment. This one wasn’t it was just a loss. Go get em on Monday.

Even with injuries

This team has enough ability to be competitive with anyone, provided they work like they did last night. That two shorty, powerplay fuck up cost them the game and I think you have to put some of that on Q. They should have won that game, but after that embarrassment in Phoenix, I was at least satisfied to see the way they responded. The Kings, Yotes and Avs may not be deep playoff contenders, but they can still inflict a lot of standings damage before the end of the year. Not sure if they took the Yotes lightly in advance, but they sure played that way. If they play the Kings like they did the Avs (minus the shorties and with a healthy Toews) that effort should be good enough to win.

by NKLHD on Nov 7, 2009 9:23 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

my thoughts exactly
although can someone name the last time Sharp scored on a breakaway, penalty shot, or shootout?

I said the exact same thing to my dad after the game.

Listen, everyone likes and roots for sharpie (especially if you’re female), but the last couple weeks in October and into November have been a little disappointing. With all of the injuries, the Hawks really needed Sharp to step up and produce some points. Hopefully when team health improves, Q can get sharp settled into a line that maximizes his talents.
