Bolland may miss 2 months if he decides to undergo surgery

To the surprise of no one, Bolland's back IS bad enough that he may need to be shelved after all.

From Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald:

Dave Bolland's back problem apparently is getting worse instead of better, which has the Blackhawks concerned and discussing what action to take.

Bolland missed Friday's 4-3 shootout loss to Avalanche, sitting out his second game of the season after being idle for most of training camp.

Bolland has had at least two cortisone shots in order to keep him playing and, according to a source, the club has discussed surgery as an option.

Should Bolland have an operation and miss possibly eight weeks, at least the Hawks could count on him being available for the stretch drive and playoffs.

Hawks coach Joel Quenneville was asked Friday if Bolland could continue to play with the pain throughout the season.

"We'll see," Quenneville said. "It's something that we'll visit and see how he's feeling on a day-to-day basis. Some days he has some good days, so we'll see."

and from Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune:

Bolland missed much of training camp and one regular season game, Oct. 8 against the Red Wings, with a bad back that requires him to get to the rink early each day for stretching and strengthening exercises.

I don't like that he's injured this way, but I'll take two months over the status quo. Thoughts?

I mentioned it briefly in another post, but my thoughts can be summed up in a name: Eric Daze.

Rest him, do whatever it takes. Bolland’s not an Yzerman who can be 100% effective with only 70% of a working body. He needs healthy body parts.

He needs healthy body parts.

Exactly…shouldn’t even be a discussion. Hell….Move Campbell to center …….. really!

he should have the surgery

before the window of a comeback this season closes. he’s been invisible and there’s no reason to run him out there every night because we are too cap-strapped to get a centerman.

rest him now

There’s lots of youngsters @ Rockford to fill in now, and gain experience (or even earn the job) and let Bolland try to get back to 100 pct for the stretch drive & playoffs

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU..........

Honestly, this is concerning the hell out of me. If his back is this bad, take him out, put him on the shelf for now, and prey Captain Marvel is 100%.

I’d rather have one Mr. Ebbett, play in November – December, rather than April – May.

About time. Its clear Bolland has been struggling with the injury.

If healthy, this team has the talent to win the Western Conference.

But, who really cares about that? Stay above water until January. Get everyone healthy. Gear up for the second half, ready to dominate the playoffs and hoist the cup.

I be on my green like Irish Spring.

You don't play with a bad back

Early surgery saves the day well over half the time with a problem back. I’d rather have him out for two months and healthy in the playoffs than have 50% of his game and he be crippled next season.

Occam's Razor keeps the cutting clean.

Eric Daze Part Deux

Ugh.

Jonathan Toews can feel free to to get back any day now.

Speaking as a guy

who had a serious back injury that I kept putting off and putting off getting fixed, the longer you work through pain, the longer it takes to get your mechanics back. Sure, you feel fine after surgery and rehab, but the way you move changes a little more every day you’re compensating for pain. That cannot be ignored in a professional ATHLETE!

Get the surgery. Now.

Get him whatever he needs

Then bring him back when he’s ready. Maybe he’d have seen the knife (or whatever he needs) earlier if some of our other core had stayed healthy.

Just the mention of Daze makes me sad, frustrated, and empty. I’ve read he still lives in chronic pain to this day.

I hope to hell Bolland and team mgmt. aren’t agitating an already bad situation. You can’t mess with a bum back. Also, I’ve heard a healthy back is kind of a nice thing to have for the rest of your life.

Bolland's back

Nothing more to add than I totally agree with Chico and Hungry and the rest here. 2 months isn’t life-threating and if that is what it takes then so be it as the Hawks should be more than capable to cover his loss during that time span. The last thing Bolland needs for his career is a back problem so fix it now before it gets irreversible.

Good news however Leafs 5, Wings 1 LOL :)

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

OMG

Did you just say.“Leafs 5???” That is some wild, wild stuff.

No human being on the planet can have back surgery and be back as an effective hockey player in 2 months

I think this is probably a sign that Dave Bolland is more or less done for the season. To think he can go under the knife and be back on skates as an effective player in two to three months is ridiculously optimistic.

It depends on the procedure

I’m not an athlete of Bolland’s level, but I went backpacking with close to 80 lbs on my back 6 weeks after my surgery. And I’m not a cripple now.

My friend thinks Bolland may have a bulging/herniated disc

and there exists a more modern surgical procedure for it that allows the patient to be out of the hospital within the day of the surgery. It cuts into less muscle and will therefore take less time to recover from than the traditional back surgery. 2 months is possible, but like other comments here have pointed out, this is something that depends as well on when they decide to do it—prolonging the inevitable can only lengthen his recovery time. Of course, the Hawks seem to be at an impasse. Q has not confirmed one way or the other and I guess they don’t really know what they’re going to do yet, even though it looks like they’re having Steeger stand in for Bolland tomorrow anyway.

I guess it says a lot of what they think he contributes to the team if they’re so hesitant about shelving him for two months. Note too that besides his last game against Phoenix, he’d been playing through back issues but desite this, he has never really been a liability on the ice. But I think too that this is a very short-sighted view if management is willing to risk Bolland’s health for the chance that he can play through his back issues, unless we’re missing some part of the equation here. (And you have to wonder if he’s insisting on playing through it.)

2 (approx) may be appop for his specific problem

and athletes (those willing to put up with big pain to push a rehab aggressively) will both heal and rehab faster than non-athletes. it is a whole different rehab process and moves quicker.

Can someone explain to me...

Why Jack Skille has not been called up from Rockford? He looked better than decent in preseason and the beginning of the season. The team has made a statement by getting Ebbet minutes and experimenting with Hendry at forward. Did Skille do or say something that has upper management showing who’s boss? Was he not listening to Q? Is he too valuable to the Ice Hogs? The Hawks are missing 5 to 6 forwards right now and I am trying to understand the situation.

Victim was found murdered by a Chelsea Dagger.

skille costs $ & the team has cap trouble

the team is in deep salary cap headroom trouble, and Skille is somewhat higher cost, among the Hawks available options. Ebbetts is a very low cost player.
