Drive Through The Suburbs, And Into The Blues: Blues at Hawks Preview/Thread/Day Care Nap Time

St. Louis Blues at Chicago Blackhawks, Dec 16, 2009 7:30 PM CST

06192006  vs. Images_medium
GAMETIME:  7:30pm
TV/RADIO:  CSN, WGN 720
The Enemies Clarion Call:  St. Louis Gametime, but good god don't go there.

You'll remember two years ago, when a young but irrelevant Hawks team took 5 of 8 from Scum.  The following year, when the Wings decided the Hawks mattered, they won four of six and the ones they didn't win were dead rubber games at the end of the year.  Last season, the Hawks considered the Blues irrelevant, played like it, and only won two of six against them.  It's time to take these guys serious enough to show them how big the gulf between them is.

The Blues are off to a piss poor start, and poor ol' Gallagher down there is calling for Andy Murray's head.  Especially at home, they rarely bother to show up, and have been getting beat by inferior teams.  To quote Matt Taibi, this team couldn't score backstage at a Zeppelin show with a 13-inch dick and two-pound bag of coke.  Their power play is last in the league, and makes the Hawks man-advantage look like an All-Star game.  That team that used to finish every check against us and be in everyone's face?  Haven't seen it this season.  Must still be mourning the Cardinals' capitulation.

That's not to say tonight will be easy.  The Blues have been getting excellent goaltending from both Chris Mason and Ty Conklin, with Conk Block likely to get the start tonight.  They haven't been shipping in the goals either, and there's always Erik Johnson, who's an absolute stud and a nightmare-for-the-next-decade in waiting.  They have a pretty impressive road record of 8-2-3, and you know they'll start at their utmost tonight.  That said, this team has generally looked for an excuse to quit most nights, and an early lead could do that.

As for the Hawks, expect Q to toss out the same Dr. Weird concoctions of lines and power play units we saw on Sunday.  Huet will be in net,  Kane with be Darth Kaner.  But whatever.  The Hawks are better than the Blues, and if they play like they mean to demonstrate that, they will.

Allez!

Sam?

You okay? That last paragraph reads like you may have suffered a stroke. You’re contributions are untouchable … just thought it was funny.

Agreed...

…doesn’t seem like coherent English sentences, but I’ll leave it to Thor to apply withering feedback.

St/ Lous knocked off Calgary at home last night, right? I actually think this is a good omen for tonight.

Brad what happened with that team? I was at a Hawks game last February where the Blues absolutely dominated us. I think we had 1 SOG halfway through the game, and the thing was an embarassing laugher. I know they had injuries early last year but they played their asses off through the end of the season and made the playoffs.

I expected them to really compete and be the team to challenge the Hawks in the division this year with the Wings maybe/maybe not on the decline, but not only hasn’t it happened, they’ve been really bad. The few times I’ve seen them there’s been no fight in that team.

I should also mention that while most of this website hates the Wings, I actually kind of admire them, but I royally hate the Blues. I mean piss on their graves, shit in their mother’s open mouth hate the Blues. So please note that while I’m asking you about the Blues in a fairly diplomatic way, what I really mean is go fuck yourself.

I hate Illinois Nazis.

Could you replace the indian head with a picture of bill wirtz and replace the blues logo with the indian head?

But in the grand scheme of things I must admit that’s a pretty good picture from a blues fans’ perspective.

Duly noted

And we don’t have the first fucking clue why this team can’t play a full 60 minutes every night. Tuesday vs. Calgary, they played a strong game all three periods. We were shocked.

And while I will always hate Detroit, there is a special place in the dark corner of my heart for disliking the fucking Hawks.

PS

Lalonde and Olsen didn’t make the Canadian World Junior squad, unfortunately. Was an uphill battle from the start, it’s quite the defense.

Agree 100%, trash the Blues!

While I hate the Red Wings, I respect that team and the organ-I-zation. The Blues? Nothing but utter contempt for them since I learned how to say LET’S GO HAWKS/DETROIT SUCKS!
I want nothing less than a wanton slaughter of the St. Louis Blues tonight.

Oh, do the Blues and Blackhawks actually get to play each other tonight? What!?!

It ought to be a good one tonight — these games usually are. Couldn’t land tickets, so I’ll probably watch it at Sedgwick’s with other St. Louis-Chicagoans tonight.

You wouldn’t want to link us fellas at SLGT to a courtesy copy of The Committed Indian tonight, eh? Always nice to see what the other side has to say…I’m sure there’ll be nothing but praise and goodwill toward our Blues…

Regarding the Hossa, Sharp, Ladd line...

I know it seems strange at first, but I think the idea behind it is that it is a “skilled veteran” line. While Ladd isn’t even close to Panda or Sharpy as far as skills actually go, all three have played a lot of hockey in the league, and it just may boost Laddy’s game while we know Hossa and Sharp will continue to put up numbers.

Quick question... and off topic....

Bought standing room for a game in Jan…. does anyone know if standing room people can just get there early and grab a spot in that bar? Are there seats that over look this ice?

by Wanker751 on Dec 16, 2009 3:12 PM CST reply actions   1 recs

Good question

I might try that out on Friday. I’ll post something about it in the post-game friday if nobody responds to this.

by Original Six on Dec 16, 2009 3:42 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

They check your tickets at the bar for the standing room area, they say you have to have ‘300-section tickets’. However, I don’t know if that means standing room tickets aren’t allowed, my guess is they aren’t. Either way, I’m sure you can maneuver your way in there…

Try the bar, you might luck out, I know the countertop there is pretty high, but you might be alright depending how short she really is. I’d say just get there earlier and find a good spot, You’ll probably be fine in the SRO area as long as you find a spot you like, I know it is fun up there.

by cubs22 on Dec 16, 2009 6:14 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

You would think the 'Hawks should win this one...

But as we’ve seen in the past that hasn’t always happened. But tonight it has to, for no other reason, I don’t want to wake up in the morning and see Nashville in 1st place in this division as it may cause my keyboard to take the brunt of my induced vomit that may result. Nashville in 1st place? Nope. It just can’t happen.
Since it’s the Blues may we also deliver a message to them much like the ones given to Calgary and San Jose. I would be very pleased if that were to happen.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

blues hate

i’m not gonna claim to have hung in there through the rough years, but i think the STL hate needs to be ramped up to that of the 80s. DETROIT SUCKS gets the publicity, but i grew up with almost equal hate for the blues. too bad Minne isn’t in the division. i hate them too.

I didn't know this

until I just looked it up on wikipedia:

On October 20, 2000, Belfour plead guilty to a misdeamenor charge in which Belfour was subdued by police after a woman he was with became frightened by an intoxicated Belfour in a Metro Dallas hotel room. While under arrest and being transported to the local division, he allegedly offered Dallas police officers one billion dollars for his release without charges.

That’s fucking hilarious.

Ramped up to the hate of the 60s and 70s

When Chicago came to STL back then the jails and bars were both full by the end of the night. One night the Blues had nickel beer night at the ole Barn. Falstaff was the Blues sponsor then and it was like a golden shower all night. The refs got hit, the Hawk fans, fans who stood up while play was under way.

I really detest Bettman's TV policies

I buy the NHL package and can’t even get the game because it’s on NHL net which Time Warner doesn’t offer. So I paid $200 and get stiffed. Then I go to NHL.com and they offer a free trial. Great! I click on the Hawks/Blues and they say to go to Versus or NHL Network on your cable. Brilliant. No wonder the NHL is a second tier sport.

That was terrific! Brings back many memories of the ol’ St. Louis-Chicago rivalry. If only we could’ve finished off that phenominal season of 1991 in style instead of losing to the North Stars in 6.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

Kaner calling Blues out

Maybe not the best idea for our ultra-talented midget to make mention, over the UC PA system, that the Blues always seem to take cheap shots and take shots after the whistle. We do see them another 5 times this season if the CSN crew is to believed about anything

Sweet emotion

That was a great win for the ’Hawks as Huet and Niemi became the first tandem since Bannerman and Esposito in 1983 to record back-to-back shutouts. Pretty fucking awesome I must say.

Hossa netted another and now has 5 markers as it’s only a matter of time before he takes over the team lead in goals. Candy Kane with 3 sweet dishes that ties a career high and Byfuglien decided (once again) to show up and become the player we all envisioned him to be on a nightly basis.

Overall ZERO PASSENGERS tonight in another dominant performance by the ’Hawks again. Next up another Original 6 match-up with the Bruins (one of 5 teams that are worth a fuck in the Eastern Conference). Should be another classic duel.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

I'd count Sopel as a waste tonight

The only positive thing I can say about him is he prevented Janssen from killing Huet.

I don’t know, he beat the wingers back to get some of the pucks in the corner, which is better than normal. And he did block some more shots, keeping Huet from seeing more than he already had to.

Wow, cool

First back-to-back shutouts since ‘83? (by different goalies?) I don’t feel like looking that up, so I’ll trust you on that. Glad I was there for both! Nice that Huet is catching up with shutouts. Admittedly against two teams doing badly now, but impressive nonetheless.

Boston is the Eastern team I like, so I don’t mind if they get ONE point Fri. (I’ll be there)…but I’m getting sick of OT & shootouts, more so with Boston than Chicago this year.

Les Québecois are weird

If you move to Montreal, you will have weird experiences. I only understood about a quarter of the conversation tonight, but I watched the game with a parking attendant. A fucking parking attendant. That guy was awesome. I should have bought his 15th beer.

If you were wondering why time left on the penalties were announced

(this was asked earlier; I skimmed through the thread after getting home) The Jumbotron wasn’t working properly for the first 2 periods—all the graphics for penalties came up, but they couldn’t get the players’ numbers and penalty info in the box. They wanted to help the crowd know about PP time…

I take photos of the Jumbotron every time something happens in a game (to help me remember/write about it later), so I was frustrated not being able to record those. Especially the first penalties—when #55 and #55 both got roughing penalties. (I kind of wanted a 55-55 fight…)

Power plays...

So if our power play is “clown shoes” and St Louis’ PP is worse what do we call it?

Clown dick?

Two items tonight...

Seabrook was back to his old form and was a MONSTER out their tonight!!!

Like that Q recoginized the Blues were takin shots at Kane , so he Kane running with Eager and Buff on different shifts late in the game.

Oh one more item…Buff had the kind of game that reminds all of us of what a force he can be and he can makes men look like litle kids when he wants to

"Let 'em say all those nice things," he says, "but I know my mistakes, and I make plenty of them.-Bobby Orr

Thanks to DVR troubles

I missed the first ten minutes and last ten minutes of the game, Jackman seemed like he was punching Kane while he as on the ground, WTF was up with that? Sharp seemed to be trying to pretend he was Brouwer everytime he touched the puck. What is more frustrating? When Sharp blows a One on One, or when he blows the chance to blow a One on One? With Campbell having a goal tonight and Sharp not, and since Huet didn’t let in a goal what else is there to complain about? Did the officiating seem a bit weak to anyone else? I know I am missing roughly a whole period, so any other insights i can get from anyone? Hawks played pretty dam well (it seems) and I hope that Burish can spread some love Jackman’s way eventually.

wait what?

It was good to see Jackman get hammered by Byfuglien, at least. Thought it was funny how he picked on Kane, and then when he got hit, he started chasing the guy who hit him until he realized it was Byfuglien (who has 4 inches and 50 pounds on him), and then wimped out and let Crombeen and Winchester jump in for him. Imagine my surprise upon noticing this assclown wears an “A”. No wonder the Blues are tied for last in the West.

A few stats for all you Kane haters. +11, leads the team in goals, assists, points and last night he was easily the best Hawk on the ice. Not to mention nine of his goals are even strength. So much for you critics of his game. And believe me criticism is a good thing, when it’s deserved which is not the case with this guy, this year.

Are there even still Kane haters out there?

They should try watching him play this year.
