What about the tagging issue?

Are they going to announce a trade tomorrow as well? This is stressing me out.

Rosendouche was playing up the Sharp angle...

…apparently, his goal last night makes him more “marketable.” Guh. What a nozzle!

by cliffkoroll on Dec 2, 2009 6:31 PM CST up reply actions

Once again my feelings on Sharp

Yes, let’s get rid of a player that can score close to 30 goals a season and can play all forward positions in all situations that has the knack of scoring huge goals at key times throughout the season. Oh, did I mention that a $3.9 million per season he remains one of the best bargains in the NHL during the cap era. That’s right a whole $900,000 more than Byfuglien, and $875,000 more than Versteeg and Barker who are 3 players that hold significantly less value to the team. But let’s trade him anyways. Guh.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

I love Sharp...

…mostly because when people moronically yell “shoooooot!”, he listens.

Kane, Toews, and Hossa look like the Globetrotters at times (as Foley never tires of observing), but maybe not enough trigger-pulling. When you put Sharp out with a playmaker, you get lots of shots, which are correlated with goals.

Having said that, if push comes to shove, I gotta take VERSTEEG! over Shooter.

I’m totally a Caps fan, I’d love me some Patrick Sharp for exactly those reasons. That and he plays very respectable defense (at least he has in the ‘Hawks games I’ve watched this year)

Jesse Rogers

was just on AM1000 and said that it’s definitely Toews and Kane announced tomorrow and he’s hearing Keith as well. He’s also confirmed with sources that they would have to free cap space to announce all three so either they have to move someone in the next 18 hours or they just wait to announce Keith.

by Scott13 on Dec 2, 2009 6:03 PM CST reply actions

I waffle

on Rogers. Sometimes I think he is spot on and other times he doesn’t sound like he knows what the hell he’s talking about. He certainly isn’t an ass clown all of the time, but then again I never listened to him on the score, I’ve just started reading and listening to his stuff this year.

From the trib ...
One of the hiccups was said to be the Hawks’ lack of tagging room, which would have put them over next season’s salary cap if the deals has been announced. Bowman has been manipulating the payroll all season and cleared more room when the team waived Andrew Ebbett on Nov. 21. Since that time, the Hawks have carried just one extra player on their roster (defenseman Jordan Hendry) and apparently now have the required room to announce the deals.

by MHC23 on Dec 2, 2009 6:08 PM CST reply actions

I read this too

but it doesn’t tell us much. “Apparently now have the required room to announce the deals” could mean a trade has happened. If you look at the numbers, (and I obviously could be missing something) they must have traded someone.

Does anyone here follow Darren Dreger on twitter?

He just said (I think) 5 yrs $6.3M for both Kane amd Toews and 13yrs $5.5M for Keith. Can someone please do the cap math for me? I’m on the bus.

by Sportsgal on Dec 2, 2009 6:20 PM CST via mobile reply actions

capgeek.com

according to capgeek, we have $13,472,126 of available cap space for next year (assuming the same cap as this year). 6.3 mil + 6.3 mil + 5.5 mil = 18.1 mil. It was my understanding that we could not exceed next year’s cap, which clearly, 18.1 mil > 13.5 mil. I was also under the impression (before actually checking the numbers) that we only needed to shed a couple mil from next years contracts and then we’d be able to sign the big 3. 18.1-13.5 = 4.6 mil.

What can you take from these numbers?……….I’m missing something. Either …… we can exceed next years cap by a certain amount, capgeek is off with our 2010 payroll, we traded 4.6 mil in salary, and/or the numbers you have are too high.

Agreed. I do find capgeek to be the most reliable, though, it’s rarely steered me wrong. That said, this whole trade stress is misguided.

No one really knew what tagging room even meant before the rumours of the re-signing of the Thrill Kill Kult … and I’m going to assume Stan had some extra cash to give some lawyers to help him understand the situation adequately.

Darren Dreger's Cap Math Says....

The numbers are crazy. I couldn’t fit them in with $6m for Toews & Kane and $5m for Keith in CapGeek. They ended up fitting for $5m and $4.25m, respectively.

by chiblackhawks on Dec 2, 2009 6:34 PM CST up reply actions

Those numbers can't be right.

Just too high, especially both Kane and Toews above $6M. Means at least Barker, Sopel, and Buff gone. Sharp probably too since his cap hit is higher than Versteeg. Maybe able to keep Madden if he comes back for a little cheaper.

Here are the numbers for players almost certain to come back:

What will happen

I agree completely with Steve Konroyd’s view….and that is that the Hawks and other upper echelon teams will be built around 7 to 10 “core” players and that the rest of the mix will be a revolving mix of NHL journeyman.

Enjoy Patrick Sharp and Dustin Buff now, because both are a lead pipe cinch to be gone. We’ll see if Stan Bowman can keep this thing fine-tuned by plugging and playing journeyman and youngsters around the self-evident “core.”

they signed bolland to an overpriced 5 year contract, not hoping that he’d grow to exceed it, but in hopes that they’d have an easy time trading him the next summer, because they are sooo deep at center that they are currently scrambling to find a winger to fill his role while he’s hurt.

Carolina, St. Louis, Florida, Ottawa, and Minnesota – all ranked in the bottom 10 in the league – could use someone that could move the puck up the ice and create some instant offence from the blueline. Whether you like Campbell or not there will be teams that will make an offer to Stan to acquire Campbell.

by hawks61 on Dec 2, 2009 11:27 PM CST up reply actions

I like Campbell.

You picked five random teams and say they need a PP QB that can move the puck up the ice. You have no credible source. You have not insinuated who these teams that, so you say, need instant offense (though it is not lost on me that the Hawks were one of those bottom 10 PP teams not too long ago, and we have two (2) puck moving offensive D-guys) from the blue, will be willing to give up for Campbell. I am sick and tired of wild, unsubstantiated trade rumors without any credible sources.

by illinikc33 on Dec 2, 2009 11:38 PM CST up reply actions

I’ve tossed the idea of Campbell around at the Silver Seven and it’s been with mixed reviews but all agree that they are in dire need of a QB on the PP. The players involved have been varied from Campoli to Picard to Brian Lee (all defencemen) and with a 2nd to 4th round pick.
However, it wouldn’t suprise me any that the other 4 teams mentioned would not take a look at Campbell considering their current state of their PP. When you have Corvo, Jackman, Zidlicky, and McCabe running the gun on the PP you should be looking to upgrade.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

The Chicago Blackhawks have announced a news conference for Thursday afternoon, where it is expected they’ll announce long-term deals for young linchpins Patrick Kane, Duncan Keith and captain Jonathan Toews.

Kane and Toews will receive five-year extensions worth $31.5 million US, CBCSports.ca has learned, with Keith to get a whopping 13-year deal worth $72 million.

Keith’s deal will be an annual salary cap hit of $5.54, with the Toews and Kane deals each costing $6.3 million against the cap.

Just out of curiosity...

until the f-ing recession hit, wasn’t the cap growing at a pretty steady clip? Like 5-7 million a year? That is a prime contract right there

I wonder if we could sign some of these 2nd tier core guys to underpriced 1-2 year contracts with the anticipation that once the economy comes back and revenues and the cap begin growing again, that they’ll get a 4-5 year deal for better money.

I just have to think that even those players (and their agents) realize that their options are to go to a less hockey crazed market and make slightly more or stick around here, have a chance at a cup and wait for the economy to recover before their big payday.

by SLoop on Dec 2, 2009 9:13 PM CST reply actions

Cap is expected to go down roughly $2 million

Again, the new model for the upper echelon teams in the NHL needs to be lock up your 7 to 10 core guys and surround them out of salary cap necessity with a rotating mix of NHL journeyman and youngsters who play on the cheap.

You’re just not going to be able to keep more guys in the $2 million per season price range who don’t really belong in your core. Hence why Patrick Sharp, Big Buff and Cam Barker are examples of guys who will soon be ex-Hawks. I will hate losing Sharp, but it is the price to be paid.

They still have no idea what the cap number is going to look like. Sure, there are guesses and last year at this point, they thought the cap might $5 million less than it was. Now there are rumblings the cap may be going up.

The bottom line is, no one really knows and anything else is simply a guess.

Yeah, no idea with where you're coming up with this

my point was, even though the cap may go down or stay the same next year, isn’t there a pretty good chance that when the economy recovers and revenues increase that kane’s, keith’s and toew’s contracts are not as difficult to deal with as the cap increases?

by SLoop on Dec 2, 2009 10:43 PM CST up reply actions

The cap is likely to increase slightly ($1 to 3M max) due to the complexity of the cap issues surrounding many teams within the league. The would like to increase it so that many teams can get themselves out of trouble and open up the market some. It’s not likely the small, cash-strapped teams are going to have the finances to spend X amount of dollars more to increase the talent level of their teams. Trust me, the owners of the teams that have money will dictate what happens with the cap as they’re ‘footing the bill’ of franchises that are losing money hand-over-fist. According to Hockeycentral, the NHL could end up – in 2 years – owning up to 6 NHL franchises.

Any of the two (Sharp, Buff, Barker, Versteeg, Ladd) or either (Toews, Kane). It’s a no-brainer people. An absolute no-brainer. This is a salary cap league. You cannot keep a team like this together unless they all collaborate to make $2MM each. Replacements are in the wings. Toews and Kane are still 3 years from their FREAKING PRIME PLAYING DAYS.

It might just me, but I feel like it’s gonna be Buff going. When Bolland is healthy, your top 2 lines have some combination of Toews, Kane, Hossa, Sharp, Versteeg, and Bolland. Your checking line of Madden, Brouwer, and Ladd is about the best checking line you could hope for. This leaves Buff for the 4th line. No 4th liner in a salary cap league will be making $3 million a year. Thoughts?

by hawksfan21 on Dec 2, 2009 10:07 PM CST reply actions

I had a similar thought about Buff last season

that Buff didn’t really fit anywhere on this roster, either theoretically or in practice. When Savard first converted him into a power forward, I was excited about the possibilities, and he’s shown glimpses of being that physical presence over the last two and a half seasons. Unfortunately, he’s never had a stable line to play with, both because of his own inconsistencies and because of the coaches’ preferred line combinations.

He was kind of effective last spring playing with Versteeg and Pahlsson, and overall I like seeing him play with Versteeg on the other wing, but most of the time he (kind of) throws his body around, (kind of) hangs out in the other goalies’ faces, and (kind of) has a slap shot. There hasn’t been enough steady improvement on his part, given what he’s being paid.

His contract extension was actually one of the few times I thought DT was on drugs, because I always thought he could be a big third-line crash-bang guy, maybe use him on the power play either on the point or on top of the crease, but that potential hasn’t quite manifested in results, other than hits. I won’t be too sad if he is indeed the one traded; either him or Barker as martyr for the Capocalypse would be fine with me.

My Move

Just dump Barker and Sopel for some draft choices, bring up Hendry and put Buff back on defense.

by cdz3210 on Dec 2, 2009 11:05 PM CST reply actions

Buff started as a defenseman and even played a couple shift at the end of the Calgary romp.

by cdz3210 on Dec 2, 2009 11:11 PM CST up reply actions

Oh. My. God.

Lets just get rid of Buff and move Hendry to forward instead. He’s played there a few games. Problem solved.

Yep, problem solved

I’m glad cdz3210 pointed out that Buff had played defense before. Otherwise, I might have thought it was a stupid idea.

These threads really get on my nerves.

It seems to me that it would be more fun to wear boxing gloves made out of steak and box a polar bear on a chunk of ice floating in the ocean surrounded and by a pod of killer whales than it would be to continue pointing out utter nonsense in this thread. At least in the former situation it would be over quickly.

Welcome to the bandwagon.

You got here just in time. There’s not much room left.

I know signing of the big 3 is important

but we’re trying to win a cup this year for starters. A third defensive pairing of Buff and Hendry does not sound like a step in the right direction for this year’s goal. You can’t be too cavalier about a third defensive pairing, you can’t just occasionally hide them on the bench for an extended period of time like you can with fourth line forwards.

This from Bob McKenzie on the Hawks issues:
With the Chicago Blackhawks set to announce long-term extensions for Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Duncan Keith at 2 p.m. (CT) on Thursday, there is much speculation they will have to make a move to free up “tagging room” (salary cap room for next season) before they can make the extensions officials.

While that is a possibility – some think Brent Sopel and his $2.33 million salary could be traded or waived at a moment’s notice tomorrow – it doesn’t appear to be an absolute necessity.

As we reported more than a week ago, the Blackhawks likely have just enough “tagging room” right now to fit in the three extensions. But to do so would leave the Blackhawks in a ridiculously tight position in terms of making any future moves. So tight, in fact, that they may be totally hamstrung in terms of bringing in any player who is under contract for next season.

For example, what if one of the Hawks’ netminders – Cristobal Huet or Antti Niemi – went down with an injury? The Hawks would normally call up No. 3 man Corey Crawford, but he’s under contract for next season and it’s not inconceivable that the Hawks would not be able to make that move. In the bigger picture, with the Hawks being a Stanley Cup contender if not a mid-season favourite at this point, Chicago wants to have some flexibility to add a player at the trade deadline.

So whether it’s before tomorrow’s contract announcements or sometime after the fact, the Blackhawks are expected to move a current roster player who is under contract next season. Sopel continues to be the most logical choice to move, but it’s not an absolute necessity to get it done in the next number of hours.

It could happen, but it’s not imperative. Not yet anyway.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

Thanks for the update.

Looks like we have a little bit more time for a trade.

All I know about cap issues...

…is that nobody really knows dick, but I find this post reassuring.

Do I detect behind the scenes maneuvering from Hi, I’m Bob LeDonne here?

Ultimately, it seems to me that Buff, Barker, and Sopel are the new Big 3. Hendry plus whomever can’t be that much worse than Barker/Sopel. If catfish stays, Sopel/Hendry might even be an improvement.

BTW- what sort of witchcraft did Boston pull with the Savard contract? I expect 50 posts analyzing this.

Anybody catch this article...

on BlackhawkUp? http://blackhawkup.com/2009/12/03/dare-to-dream-how-about-kovalchuk-for-a-cup-run/

Patrick Sharp, Brent Sopel and a second-round pick for Kovalchuk. This is the only circumstance where I will gladly accept dealing Sharp. The ‘Hawks would rid themselves of $3.9 million and $2.3 million cap hits for next season. And since we obviously won’t have the cap space to re-sign Kovalchuk to his market value, that money comes off the books for Niklas Hjalmarsson, Andrew Ladd and maybe even John Madden.

i read that too

The article points to the fact that since talks have been going for awhile, it might be a sign that it’s not going to happen. Personally, and no disrespect to Jeffrey Bartl, I can’t see the Thrashers taking on 6.2 mil in guaranteed money for another year for both, then Sharp’s 3.9 for 2011-2012 when they’ve got Kovalchuk’s expiring contract. Since this is all just theory, I guess it would come down to how highly they valued Sharp. Regardless, if they want to contend, this isn’t a good move.

ha

i posted before actually reading the article – its a nice idea at the very least. I’d be surprised if Atlanta would want to take on Sopel when they could try and pry away a more valuable, cheaper piece.

I was surprised they held on last night, have been used to us coming up short in those situations since after the final four run. I think they realized that down 23, their season was prettymuch on the line. They aren’t the most talented team around, but at least they’ve got some heart. Gonna be exciting watching Paul and Richardson develop.

Great handle, by the way

in all honestly

the season tickets aren’t the best deal around. For the regular student tickets, you start at the bottom of the pecking order (prob top of the C section) and there usually aren’t that many big ticket games.

You can probably find reasonably priced tickets to most of the games – people at the law school would be constantly selling tickets at face value or giving them away. I don’t think they’re sold out for the season are they? I’d imagine you’d be able to buy individual student tickets when you’re enrolled? It might be worth calling the ticket office and figuring out what they can do for you in terms of student pricing for next semester.

I hope there isn’t a player with the name Blank, because it will probably confuse many, many people. “…the Hawks signed Blank.” “Who?” “Blank.” “What?”

In other words...

let’s just enjoy this damn team and their talent. No “if only we had…” and “if only we could release…” just stop. If ifs were Jifs, we’d all be peanut butter. We have a great team…NOW. There’s no “we’ll have a great team if…” Think real hard about the ‘03-’04 season. The Hawks won 20 games. TWENTY. They ended that season with 59 points. They’re only 22 points shy of that mark this year, and there is 56 games remaining.

It is possible to tinker your already solid team down to the land of mediocrity. I really fucking hope Stan doesn’t play too much – because we will go blind.
