as someone who coached young players for years
this is a really big message – a super simple thing to improve one’s effectiveness immensely, that lots and lots of kids just never absorb.
it is sometimes said that hockey is a simple game for complicated people. there is a lot of truth to it.

I have a drinking game — I sadly play with myself.
Everytime I hear “the back of the net” I go get another beer — and sometimes I’ll hit my wife in the kidney for good measure.

I don't know what's better...
…“Dave Bolland” or the Toe Blake monikor.
This may get me uninvited to some upcoming reindeer games, but I kinda like Pat and Edzo.

love Foley and Edzo
Edzo does have some tired shtick, but I’m a big fan regardless. I mean, the dude’s got gigs for the Hawks, NBC, and Versus……..there must be something to like for those outside Chicago as well.

notice the word choice in "something"
Joe Buck isn’t 100% bad either. His voice is pretty much synonymous with October baseball, I suppose you could argue that shouldn’t be the case.

Ahh
That’s why I hate him. Not too familiar with that brand of baseball

seeing it.......
and seeing it fairly regularly are two very different things. We’ve both seen October baseball, but certainly not as often as we should. I believe Mr. Lava is a Sox fan as well.

Yes I am
and I would not say I am “familiar” with october baseball.
It would be like saying I’m familiar with January football

Chris Berman
was cool when he was doing NFL Primetime like 25 years ago. I remember getting real excited as a kid to watch it before the Sunday night football game. Now he is an overhyped clown with hackneyed schtick that most people can’t stand. Kind of like the majority of the ESPN guys; it’s part of the reason I don’t bother w/ that channel anymore (that along with the east coast centric reporting, the lack of anything NHL, and the hyping of NASCAR (simply b/c ESPN broadcasts it; surprise surprise there)).

Joe Buck is far better for football than baseball. My guess is I think that because when he calls a football game, I’m not forced to listen to Tim McCarver as well.

Coattails anyone?
Fuck Joe Buck. Can’t stand that guy at all. His call on Randy Moss FAKE mooning the crowd in Green bay and is over reaction to it obviously not knowing that all the Packer backers moon the opposing teams bus pissed me off. Irresponsible that made such a huge deal out of a funny celebration.

I don't know
How he gets any football related job, he ruined the lions (which I kinda think I have to thank him for? maybe?) and as an announcer he is terrible, it’s like he tries to speak in Maddenisms, but just sucks.
wait what?

Toe, I think
you shouldn’t have written anything else after your first sentence. Nothing to do with the second sentence, I just think your drinking game announcement would’ve been funnier with no further comment.

I like Edzo too
But I really wish someone would invite him to speak at a hockey camp so he could get all those “for all you young hockey players out there” out of his system.

My circumstances...
…are thus: in the household is a 17 year-old punk who plays high schol hockey and maintains that, as such, he enjoys insights into the game unavailable to his old man, who’s family couldn’t afford high school hockey. Sometimes, I feel like an immigrant who busts his ass so his kids can become Americans and look down their noses at him.
I like Edzo because he often echos my own observations- admit it, we all like people who do this. Right or wrong, it allows me to cram it up Mr. Know-It-All’s butt.

Pat and Edzo
do a decent job. You can’t beat Foley’s voice or enthusiasm, but I do wonder why he seems to get a lot of players wrong during a broadcast. (I can usually tell who’s got the puck just by the skating style.)
Eddie has GREAT hockey sense, but I could do without “happy human” and “immediately” every broadcast.
They also seem to be talking over the action a lot more these days. Still, I’m really glad they brought Foley back. It just wasn’t right hearing someone else do the announcing.

that is what i like about tv broadcasts
the picture can tell the story while the announcers entertain. It’s like sitting watching the game with some friends.
by SLoop on Dec 21, 2009 11:29 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
That's what I liked about Foley/Tallon doing both radio and tv broadcasts.
They entertained, only they were still cognizant of calling the action on the ice first.
But I still don’t mind them. I’d like to see Edzo tone down the goofball schtick, but I can handle it.

well, they're no Lloyd Pettite (or however it was spelled)
That guy was the absolute gold standard of hockey announcers – and a great guy besides.
I like Pat and the rest of the crew now, but Lloyd they aren’t
by krome on Dec 22, 2009 9:35 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Lloyd
I’m with you there. Best announcer I have ever heard.
His “Shot and a GOAL!!!” was classic. The disappointment in his voice when the other team scored was evident in his “shot and a goal”
Additionally, he knew how to call a hockey fight. He called uppercuts, hooks, right cross.
Pat is good, but Lloyd was the best.
