CALL FOR AUTO BAILOUT:  Winging It In Motown

I think the title there makes me the first to make a "Detroit Rock City" reference on this blog, and though it might not have anything to do with anything, that still means I win (they make pornos that start that way too!).  Anyway, the Hawks have to scoop up whatever they have left and vomit it all over the Joe tonight (though it should blend right in).  I can't figure out why, but I get a scary feeling that we might see and empty-tank effort tonight.  I certainly hope not, but the Hawks have had a ridiculous schedule in December, and fatigue has got to creep in at some point.  Though maybe they figure they'll have two days off and they can just leave it all out there.  Hopefully that's the case.

If they do bring the "a" game tonight, then they should only have a slightly harder time with Scum than they did here.  It's still Datsyuk, Lidstrom, and a bunch of Grand Rapids Griffins.  Even if Valterri Filpulla puts on his high-heels tonight, this team is still very shorthanded.  Any effort like last night's would see two points coming back down I-94.

The Hawks will get a look at Jimmy Howard, one would suspect, after Chris Osgood turned into....well, regular season Chris Osgood against us on Sunday.  Howard has been terrific this season, so Buff shouldn't expect any wristers from just inside the blue line to hit paydirt tonight.  The Wings have also called up Mattias Ritola, who everyone in the hockey press will claim is the next legend in the winged wheel.  Even though Leino, Abdelkader, and Helm haven't exactly gotten a breeze going between anyone's legs this season.

Most importantly, tonight we kick off Christmas at Whirlaway.  I think Killion and I will be there from 6 on.  Not sure if I'll be garbed out for this, but a Scott Ian looking dude who will still probably have toner embedded in his skull is pretty easy to pick out.  Sure Kills will be in the Toews jersey, and McClure will be the tall guy with the bullhorn for a voice.  You can't miss him, though you'll probably want to.

UPDATE:  Brian Rafalski has the flu, and may not play tonight.  Um, charge!

Road Trip.....gonna be there tonight

Hopefully it’ll go a lot better than last night did…..it makes the 4 hour drive home a lot more pleasant. LETS GO HAWKS

the whole nhl has the packed schedule

what with the pre-postnationalist festival coming up in Feb.

everyone figures to have it rough for fatigue, so we can’t let that roll as an excuse.

If the team can’t get psyched to beat the Scum (depleted or not), after a loss last night … then we need to rethink whether they’re ready to truly challenge for a Cup

by krome on Dec 23, 2009 12:20 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

If they repeat the performance they had last night

they’ll win 10-0.

As long as the weather doesnt go completely to hell, me and a few fellow hawks fans will be there.

by Delta0ne1 on Dec 23, 2009 12:27 PM CST reply actions

I'm wondering.

Isn’t one of the main reasons we canned Savvy because he couldn’t get the powerplay going? As the guys have said many a time, Q seems to be making all the wrong decisions regarding positioning and personnel.

Any ideas on why he’s gone temporarily insane?

Bears, Beets, Battlestar Galactica.

by AirTrafficAJ on Dec 23, 2009 12:44 PM CST reply actions

Torchetti

Unsure how much of the creative control belongs to Torch and how much belongs to Q, Q obviously has the final say…………….this team is so damn good at so many things that a bad powerplay is inexcusable.

"In an ideal world I would have all 10 fingers on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching."

by hackerar on Dec 23, 2009 1:06 PM CST up reply actions

The PP's ineffectiveness

I don’t know who really has the final say on personnel but it shouldn’t matter as the ’Hawks seem to have no idea on how to convert on the man-advantage. Even the goals the ’Hawks have scored on the PP this year have been far from making the highlight reel with at times the line pairing of Madden-Brouwer-Byfuglien getting more chances than the “A” group.

Who runs the PP? You would think Torchetti and if he is then it’s only a matter of time before the axe falls on his ass with Scotty’s old friend, Dave Lewis, looking for a job. There has to be sense of cohesiveness and urgency and I just don’t see that right now.

What players could be at fault? Well Toews and Sharp come to mind as both have been underwhelming this season with 10 goals each which has them tied with the likes of Byfuglien and Versteeg – 2 people who get considerably less ice-time. It’s time to step it up and stop thinking (maybe they have too much) of making the Canadian Olympic squad as many other Canadians have stumbled this season with the possibility to represent their country. They can say that they’re not thinking about it but they are and it looks as if it has affected their play of late. It wouldn’t be suprise me the slightest if both went on torrid goal-scoring streaks once the final roster of the Canadian Olympic is finally announced.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

by hawks61 on Dec 23, 2009 1:49 PM CST up reply actions

Peaks and valleys of the season.

There’s no way these guys have even a split second to think about the olympic team when they get the puck in the slot. Like last night with Toews on the open net, its just a matter of not capitalizing on chances. The goals will come.

a western burbs locale would be great

I moved into Wheaton in May – and inCOMetentCAST CABLE COMPANY couldn’t figure out how to serve my townhouse (even though they served the prior owner up until 5 days before they started trying to commence service for me). AT&T cable isn’t available yet – so I have no TV service at all.

A western burbs offshoot would be a welcome opportunity to see some games without inviting myself to a friend’s house.

The entire NHL television situation is bullshit

I subscribe to Center Ice and actually get Verus HD which is nice but tonight’s game is on NHL Network so I’ll be reduced to watching some crappy feed on my laptop that is probably giving my computer viruses. This is about the 4th time already the Hawks have been on NHL Network. At the very least they should give me free online viewing of NHL Network since I bought the Center Ice package. Douchebags.

He was the quarterback at Northwestern a few years ago.

I hear what you’re saying, and I saw an interview in the last year where she admitted she knew nothing about hockey until last season when the Hawks became the big news in town and she needed a crash course. So I gave her credit for at least admitting that she wasn’t an expert and that she’s still a work in progress when it comes to hockey.

But still, every time I see her I think of Buehrle’s perfect game so it’s a happy thought.

Hawks Win in shutout fashion - again!

Let’s make it SEVEN! Niemi now has 4 shutouts in 9 starts which is pretty fucking remarkable as he was very solid for a ’Hawks squad that looked a little flat from the outset. Hawks winning a game when outshot was a nice change of pace as well as the shoe has been on the other foot far too often this season.
Toews and Sharp score will came as no suprise to myself after calling them both out today. It just happens that way for whatever reason.
First time the Red Wings have been shutout 4 times in a season since 1958-59. Got to love it.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO EVERYONE, and to everyone a goodnight….

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

Nevermind

Bryzgalov took the lead back tonight with a win against the Ducks when he was the only person to show up to the stadium and watch the Coyotes play a game. Niemi would lead the league with his .937 save, but nhl.com says it doesn’t since Niemi isn’t listed in the top save % (which I assume is due to the limited number of games he’s played). How bout that for a backup goalie?

wait what?

by pepe126 on Dec 24, 2009 1:18 AM CST up reply actions

He would indeed

lead the league in both save % and GAA if he qualified. I really don’t know how he does it… he doesn’t really look super comfortable back there, and I find myself on edge just as much as when Huet’s in net. He doesn’t look like a dominant goalie, but the numbers suggest otherwise (and yes, I know the D has A LOT to do with it).
