Big Three Press Conference Live Blog
We talked about it, and it's been decided this press conference requires a Second City Live Blog. So come back at 2pm when it starts. There are lots of questions to be answered, sadly none of them will be asked. This time, I'll do it in the comments section so it updates automatically.

Perfect.
I have class at 2:15 so if this runs long or starts late I would have had to try reading lips. I’m sure we’re not gonna get any earth-shattering news here. Probably just find out how many years at undisclosed amounts. But I still want to be informed on whatever they do delve out.

Rotowire had this to say about Keith
The Hawks promised to take care of Keith, and they have. Keith is one of the NHL’s biggest bargains with a salary of $1.9 million, which makes him the fifth-highest-paid defenseman on the Hawks’ roster. “I had no problem with that contract I signed,” Keith said recently about his former contract. “I was happy with it and I’m still happy with it. It’s still a fair penny when it comes down to it.”
Maybe Keith would have signed for less, or maybe Keith is just really good at looking good in the press

Thanks for live blogging this guys
It might have been the most thrilling 30 minutes of my life.
Come on Sam
I get there are issues with the cap next year, and I’m dreading trades just as much as the next person, but I really don’t understand why you think the contracts these guys were offered are so offensive. Draft picks aren’t nearly as valuable as active, proven players. Are you saying you’d rather have Madden and Ladd more than Kane and Toews?
Agreed.
Would you have been more upset if some other team offered this much after the season and the Hawks DIDN’T match it? That would’ve made me furious.
"What the hell, let's review it." - Dale Tallon
"They are!" - Pat Foley
"What a farce." - Dale Tallon
Personally,
I feel that it’s the consensus right now amongst a lot of folks that these contracts are over market value. This doesn’t take away from the talent of any of them. It upsets me because Toews and Kane were both on record as talking about taking hometown discounts to keep the core of young players together in Chicago. For once in my life, I actually believed a statement from an athlete like that, and well, here we are. SUMMARY: I’m very thankful they’re all re-signed, I thought we could get it done for cheaper, oh well, let’s win a Cup.

Of course.
But like I said…say they were offered this kind of contract by someone else this offseason, and the Hawks said, “Nah, we don’t think he’s worth that much.” We would’ve lost our minds and thought Dollar Bill has come back to haunt and curse us all.

Seriously.
We’ve always had to gripe when our organization didn’t spend the cash on the right people. This isn’t the Arnason, Bell and Calder line we’re resigning, far the fuck from it. Yeah, we overspent a touch…but in this case, I’m glad we did instead of reverting back to the old Hawk school of “you don’t deserve that money, goodbye”. I’m real fucking happy.

...Feeding Rene Bourque his own dick since 11/19/09
by Hjammer of the Gods on Dec 3, 2009 3:05 PM CST up reply actions
I think a possible reason for NOT seeing the home town discounts is this.
Their agents told them to sign for a shorter, 5 year period, and get all you can out of it, just in case of a serious injury, or anything that would cause their stock to drop within the next 5 years. That being said, 5 years from now, if both players still feel how they do now about loving Chicago and wanting to make it their home for the rest of their careers, that is when you might see the 10 year deal at a nice hometown price.
You really can’t blame them or Bowman. They’re 21 years old, and if one of them goes down with a serious injury and never makes it back to being the player everyone thought they would be, they would be kicking themselves in 5 years for taking that contract at a lower price.
He is being completely unreasonable.
Absolutely unreasonable. Unless he invented future glasses. Or got the Delorian over at Universal Studios to work. I’m sure there will be a gripe post up soon, so this conversation can continue there.

I just don't understand
How the Bruins can sign someone like Marc Savard, a proven 90+ point scorer, for 7 years at 4mil/yr, while the Hawks 2 good players not at Savard’s level, for 6.3mil/yr each.
And it’s strange to me how Marian Hossa, the team’s best player, is only the 5th highest paid player on the team.
Check out the years on the deal
1: youy’re paying for potential in 2 young kids, remember Toews is what 22? annd Kane 21
2: Savard’s deal is 2 years longer so that cap hit isn’s as much. If you pay Savrd for only 5 years it’s like $5.6M a year.
I can all but guarantee Toews/Kane’s aganet said they would not sign for any longer that 5 yrs. So that they could hit the jack pot one more time
September 26, 2007 The day a Franchise was reborn.
yeah i agree
I think the max on the deal was 5 years. puts them in line for a handsome payday in their mid 20s.

Market Variances
While the deals for Kane & Toews are above market today, Hawks are rolling the dice that the gap between premium talent & others will remain or get larger still. I believe that the guys that have to be worried are the Buff & Sopel types; current trends indicate (to me) that the $5-7 MM players are going to squeeze down other salaries, pushing these “marginal” $3MM players’ salaries down further.
To the editors/powers that be...

They aren't free agents.
So people wouldn’t care if they were making $8MM/year.
Ah so overpaid free agent
means shit upon. Over paid draft pick signed… nothing…. (not saying they are over paid.) Just seems like the more money you make in Chicago the exceptions sky rocket up…
No, I would
compare a draft pick to a free agent. They both get the shaft b/c of (unreasonably) high expectations in most cases. The difference is that we have 3 proven star players that were making (relative) pittance that are now making what they “deserve.” If Campbell had come up through our system and gotten this contract after making $1MM/year there wouldn’t be nearly as much griping.
In the end we have
Towes, Kane, Campbell, Hossa, Keith, Seabrook locked up. I will not complain about it.
Why worry ...

I thought the limit was next years cap, but apparently it isn’t as the hawks had about 13-14 mil in cap space and just filled that space with 18.1 mil. The tagging limit must be larger than next years cap. I mean, I remember hearing (from somewhere) that the hawks couldn’t finish the contract extensions until they removed some 2010 salary, and that hasn’t happened. I’d just like to get the tagging room thing straight……for future reference if nothing else.

not quite a stab in the dark, but here it is

wish I could help you
but the explanations I’ve gotten have made no sense.

one thing that i feel keeps getting lost...
… is that the salary cap will probably rise to accomodate these contracts. With the exception of this year and probably next year, the cap has increased by a minimum of about 5 million dollars a year. So if we can just get past this upcoming off season with a reasonable amount of the team intact, we’ll probably be fine. I’m just guessing that by 2015 kane and toews contracts won’t look that over priced and keith’s will look like a bargain (assuming they maintain current output levels).
the answer is simple: watch more games and drink more beer
the higher the league revenues, the higher the cap.
that’s it; you’ve convinced me. I’m ordering that new third jersey.

i do agree with several others though...
…that these contracts, when compared to other young talent, seem fairly overpriced. Maybe not so for keith, but the other two, definitely. Not that i care a whole lot as long as the teams keeps winning.
I have to wonder if kane & toews’s agents played the “we know how bad this will look to the casual hockey fan if my client doesn’t re-sign” angle. While guys like Sam might appreciate the nuance of letting a guy go because he is asking too much money, the kind of person the hawks are trying to attract just sees the weak ass, uninformed sports reporter headline “hawks cheap out on young star”.
OK now I'm concerned
$8M for Keith next year? Jesus.
The Blackhawks have $26.04M tied up in two defenseman, a goalie and a wing.
i think his cap hit is only like $5.5 though, and that is the number that matters
The weighting of his contract to the first few years is probably just a time-value of money thing.
I have no understanding of how that works...
but hat’s still over $23M on five players.
Ladd, and Hjalmarrson are both RFAs next year. Ladd is a goner but we’ll hopefully get some decent compensation for him. Hammer is a MUST resign. He’ll definitely be up for a salary boost as well.
I wonder if the reason the kane&toews contracts were so high
is because the hawks wanted to bargain the years down to make sure they were RFA’s at the end of their contract. I bet if the hawks would have gave them the deal, say savard got, they would have gotten them much cheaper but then, since they’re older than 27, they’d become UFA and the hawks would have to compete on the open market.
Shouldn't they be UFAs at the end of these deals anyway?
I’m just hoping that when these deals are over and they are playing as expected, that they decide to sign long term contracts for around the same amount.
unless wikipedia is steering me wrong
only players who are 27 or older become UFA’s. That doesn’t mean they can’t be arbitration elligible but 5 years would put both those guys right ar 27, just in time for the hawks to maintain their rights and sign them to their final NHL contract or trade them away for several very good draft picks.

27 or older or
7 years in the NHL. So Kane and Toews will be UFAs since they will have 8 years in the NHL.

Where's Dale?
All through the press conference, John, Pat, and Dunc thanked everyone who made it all possible, and they did a great job… Family, fans, Rocky, Stan, Mc D, etc.
These are great kids, and it’s a known fact they love Dale Tallon…
It appears there is clearly a gag order here. In fact, where is Dale Tallon? Has anyone seen him? Maybe it’s just me, but the lack of acknowledgment I see here leaves me kind of empty…
Who selected these 3 in the first place? I understand there are reasons why he is no longer GM, but geez, it’s not like he committed a heinous crime or something.
God bless you Dale Tallon, wherever you are! We will always remember what you have done for the players and fans in Chicago. I’m sure the players would say so too, if they were allowed to. God speed Dale.
It would be great if he could drop by the booth with Pat Foley sometime to say hi, or better yet, fill in for Eddie when he’s off doing a national broadcast sometime…
