Taking Our Punk Ass Up Against Nashville: Preds at Hawks Preview/Thread/Dance Recital

Nashville Predators at Chicago Blackhawks, Dec 4, 2009 7:30 PM CST

Predators1  vs. Blackhawks-logo_medium

GAMETIME:  7:30 PM

TV/RADIO:  CSN, WGN 720 AM

ENEMIES LIST:  On The Forecheck

Well, now that the euphoria and discussion of yesterday's events are over, it's time to get back to what matters...and talk about the cupcake draw the US got for the World Cup.  Slovenia?  Algeria?  Let's just book that second round date with Ze Germans right now!

Right, enough of that, to the ice.  The Hawks will attempt to win their 9th straight at the UC, and 10th of 12 when Smashville walks out of the visitor's locker room.  The Hawks have won two of three from the Preds this year, and by the end of this month will be done with them for the season.  All three games have been a brain-drip-out-the-ear, stab-yourself-to-see-if-you-can-still feel bore.  That's what the Preds want.  They'll play it tight, clog the neutral zone, blah blah blah.

The top line of Sullivan, Arnott, and Dumont lit up the Wild in the Preds' last game.  But past that, there just isn't a whole lot going on here.  But because Barry Trotz is a machine, all the Preds forwards skate their ass off, and that can get you a lot of points in the first half of the season, when not every team is sure that it cares just yet.  However, Smashville has lost their last two, giving up 10 goals in the process.  Ellis is apparently getting the start tonight.  On the blue line, they have a fantastic top pairing of Shea Weber and Ryan Suter.  Weber would be a Norris candidate if he played in Toronto or Vancouver.  But the bottom pairs are just, well, "guys".  Dan Hamhuis and Kevin Klein and the rest can be forced into turnovers galore with a heavy forecheck.  Hey, guess what the Hawks do well?

In a vacuum, this one should be a walk for a Hawks team that is picture-me-rollin'.  But games against the Preds aren't played in a vacuum.  It'll be a slog, especially as there's every chance the Hawks have one eye on the date with Cindy Crosby and Gena Malkin tomorrow night.

Go get 'em.

We probably lose

the England game, and then play panicked to win the next two. That’s a dangerous spot, but still a favorable draw. That Brazil/Portugal/Ivory Coast group will be murder.

I agree that divisional games should be played in a vacuum, Sam. I think intra-divisional games should be played under normal gravitational conditions, though.

by Fifth Feather Bob on Dec 4, 2009 4:11 PM CST reply actions

Next you’ll be asking for the games to be played on a flat, frictionless surface. Like a sheet of ice or something.

"I fornicate and play hockey, cause ther're the 2 most fun things in cold weather"

by Johnny Lava on Dec 4, 2009 4:42 PM CST reply actions

Disagree

I completely disagree with the fact you think the Hawks should walk all over the preds tonight. The preds have been one of the best teams in the NHL over the last 10 games. I know the hakws have been too, but they haven’t played well in the past three. They had spurts where they dominated the BJ’s but they need to capitalize a lot more on their opportunities. Bottom line I think the Preds have been playing a lot better since getting a few key guys like Arnott back from injury, and I believe like I have said from the beginning of the season, that they are a second round playoff team. They are a much better team now then when I saw the hawks beat them LIVE from the seventh row in nashville not too long ago.

I agree with this disagreement...

…since the dismemberment of SJ, the storyline has been

Anaheim- pfft.
LA – eh.
Columbus – ha.

Yet we’ve only picked up 3 points, while the opposition has garnered 5.

Now, Nashville- pshaw.

Granted, you’ve caveated your predictions, but we all recognize and practice CYA maneuvers, right?

We got three games against the Molesters this month. Either we show ’em our heels or they buzz around all season.

Saturday night at the Igloo is the limelight, but tonight’s more important.

And the events of the past week have a distracting “Winter Classic” feel.

Ominous.

Speaking of ominous, where’s tonight’s CI?

It wasn’t his best night, but he had a lot of help and had no chance on any of those goals. The ‘Hawks were really below average tonight and to Nashville’s credit they took advantage of that. Let’s give the Predators some credit here.

Before this goes too far

This was bound to happen as the ‘Hawks can’t win them all at home. Even if the ‘Hawks were to win 50 games this year that would still mean that they would lose 32 games. It’s a long season and we’re going to make the playoffs and probably win the division. So let’s relax a little.

I replied before taBruiser decided to comeback at illinikc33 or anyone for that matter. A loss is a loss and there’s nothing that can be done to change that. There’s no sense of having arguements over a December 4th loss to Nashville that after the 27th of this month we won’t see for the rest of the season, including playoffs.

Answer me this .....

Why does he( and Buff) get a pass….yet Campbell gets his ass kicked here everyday. Hawks give up 29.9 shoots a game (I can’t believe it is that high) 6th lowest average -Yet his save % ranks him 29 out 30-actually he is tied at .906 for dead last. —Don’t fool yourselves- He is a average NHL goalie—

from watching a certain Montreal team win.

Can someone please explain to me what the fuck just happened?

I hate Nashville.

by meeshak on Dec 4, 2009 10:11 PM CST reply actions

Lucky you

To witness that in person. What an extrordinary event that was with some of the greatest players that had ever lived with the retiring of Lach and Bouchard’s numbers.

Toews goal was one of those highlight reel goals of the season. It was pretty fucking spectacular. The rest of the period the ‘Hawks had chances and couldn’t capitalize and after Hamhuis scored after a screened shot the game flipped into a disgusting mess.

The ‘Hawks refused to shoot on many occasions and passed the puck like a hot potato and after Campbell whiffed on a Kane pass the Preds went down on a 3-on-1 only to be stuffed but then Tootoo shot the puck form the boards and it carromed off of Erat’s leg (as luck would have it) it was 2-1.

The ’Hawks had some chances in the 3rd but nothing seemed to go in. Ellis was that good. Late in the 3rd the Preds put it away with a Tootoo goal as he wsa left all alone in front of Huet and went top cheese. Ward scored a minute later, ball game over.

It wasn’t the greatest of games but tomorrow will be. The Penguins, can’t wait.

by meeshak on Dec 4, 2009 10:52 PM CST up reply actions

Hate losing like this...

Bouncing pucks going over Hawks stick, pucks sitting in the crease, goalie standing on his head – how many games have we seen that? Preds literally throwing pucks at the net and they go in. First two goals made me want to puke. I would have liked to see Niemi tonight but whatever.

Apparently the refs swallowed their whistles as well – tons of interference, cross-checking, and hooking by the preds along the boards all night. Not that it really matters as Hawks had their chances. It blows to see a team dominate and give up garbage goals.

by Dunkdropsa2 on Dec 4, 2009 10:35 PM CST reply actions

The officiating wasn’t the greatest either. Expect a lot more calls tomorrow night against Cindy and Jenny.

by hawks61 on Dec 4, 2009 10:38 PM CST up reply actions

It does blow (although I missed tonight’s game), but remember: The Hawks dominated the game.

How many long, long seasons have we waited to be able to complain about a dominant team losing a game?

by meeshak on Dec 4, 2009 10:53 PM CST up reply actions

I'm strangely zen about this loss

but I guess we were gonna have a couple of games like this. We dominated, tried to generate the chances, but nothing dented twine for us. Those last few minutes were brutal though— we were fairly close to possibly tying, or at least just keeping the goal differential low. Absolutely no reason our defense should have let up like that.

Whatever. Hopefully the boys show up tomorrow in Pittsburgh.

by chiblackhawks on Dec 4, 2009 11:21 PM CST reply actions

I'm Zen also...

This loss does not bother me at all. The Hawks played good enough to win, and Ellis stood on his head. Other teams are definitely prepared when they go up against the Hawks. What was the final SOG’s? I think the Hawks outshot the Pred’s 37-22. Best heckle I heard was “Hey Tootoo…Go Back To Your Igloo!”

Victim was found murdered by a Chelsea Dagger.

by pucknut on Dec 5, 2009 7:37 AM CST up reply actions

I am not zen.

I’m not freaking out either, but Nashville may finally have moved into the role of my most hated rival. It’s just such boring hockey, no wonder they’re having difficulties—who the hell would want to go see games like that on a regular basis? It’d be like paying for a ticket to go watch them paint Trotz’s house. They should change their uniforms to grey T-shirts and beige Capri pants.
