Much Like Phil, We Had One Eye On Pittsburgh The Whole Time: Hawks at Pens Preview/Thread/Sleep Study

Chicago Blackhawks at Pittsburgh Penguins, Dec 5, 2009 6:30 PM CST

Images_medium  vs. The_penguin_medium

GAMETIME:  6:30 Central
TV/RADIO:  WGN for both
SIREN SONG FOR OTHERS:  Pensburgh, The Pens Blog

So McClure obviously tied one on last night, so I'll dive on this grenade.  A few words about last night's game first.  Other than tonight's opponent, San Jose, and Detroit, every team the Hawks see are going to go what the Preds did.  Clog the neutral zone, trap, trap, trap.  The Hawks simply are going to have to play for 60 minutes, be way more careful with the puck then they were last night (they were giving it away more than a nightclub promoter in Tiger's room.  ZING!  I can do topical, see?) and take what is given.  After Toews's wonder-goal, the Hawks turned the engine off, and that can't happen.  Though the Hawks have a pretty gaudy home record, can you recall the last game there when they've put in a dominant performance?  Reeks of complacency, which has no place on this team.  You haven't won anything yet, lads.

Anyway, to tonight, then.  The big news is Sidney Crosby won't play, which I think marks the third straight time Crosby won't face the Hawks (definitely second straight).  Not as if this team is clueless without him, though.  Geno Malkin will be the #1 center.  Where the advantage comes in is that if Crosby had played, you can bet your ass coach Bylsma would have done his best to match one of his studs against Kris Versteeg and that mish mash of a second line.  Not as easy now, but for sure he'll try and get Malkin away from John Madden, who didn't have his best game last night.  One player to watch is Alex Goligoski.  He's a young defensemen, very smooth, QB-ing their power play at the moment.  When watching BIll Guerin, if you squint really hard you can see what Byfuglien or Brouwer were supposed to be, and then sigh.

Some have argued that the Hawks may have been caught with one eye on this game, and it is a pretty big one.  Like the San Jose game, a lot of hockey fan TV's will be tuned to this one.  The Hawks will not have to deal with any trap tonight, and with Crosby out, the Hawks have a real shot to win their last ever game in The Igloo (assuming no meeting in June, of course).  Hopefully, Q has realized that second line of Versteeg-Kane-Buff didn't do anything last night, didn't really do anything the night before that either (Versteeg's goal was shorthanded, after all) and needs a change.  If the rumblings are true that the reason Sharp isn't playing center is because he simply doesn't want to, I'd look long and hard at that "A" on his chest and ask serious questions about whether it should be there at all.  If you want to play with Kane, Shooter, the only way to do that is as our #2 center right now.  The team needs that from you, so fucking get over yourself and do it.

Anyway, should be fun, ride 'em in, Rawhide.
Update: Because I'm a blithering idiot, I didn't notice Goligoski won't play tonight either.  So don't watch for him, might be difficult to see.  Chris Kunitz also won't play.

any line centered by versteeg with buff on a wing

is going to be hot garbage, but I thought kane was all over the place last night. Kid created a ton of chances, and I thought, had a nice game.

I still think, despite the defensive liability, Kane-Steeg-Buff is going to be more productive that Sharp-Steeg-Buff.

It’d be nice to see this team trade for a second line center with an expiring contract, and then they can have bolland come back on the fourth line until he is full go, and then flip the ‘new’ guy with bollie for the rest of the year. I know the trade talks are getting old, but I’m not talking about trading simply due to cap apocalypse……I’m talking about a trade for need. Feel free to tell me why this is a terrible idea, because i’m sure it is in one way or another, I can take it.

We’ve gotten close to zero second line contributions since Bollie got hurt and then went down. As Sam mentioned, we’ve gotten nice special teams contributions from second line players, but we’ve seen little even strength productivity.

Buff is the cancer of the second line

and I don’t see where he’d go after Bolland comes back. Whether it’s Versteeg & Kane or Versteeg & Sharp, the second line could be just as dangerous if Bolland centered it instead of having Steeger try only to end up with Buff weighing it down.

Who do you have in mind, though, and how would it play out? We’ve already tried it with Ebbett and I don’t know what the Wild did to him but he’s been more successful there than here.

by chiblackhawks on Dec 5, 2009 2:53 PM CST up reply actions

my sentiments on buff exactly

Love what Buff is capable of when he is performing his necessary role to the fullest. That being said, It has been awhile since he’s gotten in a goalie’s kitchen consistently. I count two goals I thought he should’ve had last night….1) Kane beats ellis 5 hole, puck hits the post and slides through the crease. I thought buff should’ve been crashing the net for an easy goal there. 2) versteeg to kane (backhand pass) to buff. Sure Kane’s pass was a little hot, but Buff needs to get his damn stick on the ice and tap that in. I know I can’t expect perfection everytime, but these types of scenarios are a big part of what’s plaguing that second line.

And I agree that once bolland is back, where does buff fit in this crop of forwards?
Before the season started, many of us thought buff might skate with Ladd and Madden on the checking line. With the injuries, Brouwer has absolutely made the most of his opportunities, and has been stellar. He’s filled that checking line role, but at the same time, Brouwer has shown some hands, offensive pollish, and willingness to get in front of the net and redirect some shots……. this makes me want to see what he could do on one of the top two lines, but something makes me think that the coaches wouldn’t swap buff and brouwer because buff can’t handle the full checking line assignment (that as I mentioned) many hoped he could.

There were some (probably completely made up) Buff for Matt Cullen rumors. I’ll tell you straight up, I don’t know a damn thing about Cullen except that he is a center with an expiring contract, and his stats show that he does score some points. To me this sounded like a solid match on the surface, I’m not gonna act like I know more than I do and tell you Cullen would be a good fit on the ice. I am trying to watch as many non-hawks NHL games as I can, but I don’t get to all of Versus games and I don’t have any additional packages, so my NHL knowledge outside of chicago is sub par. Couple this with the fact that I’m a huge fan of all 4 chicago sports and spend alot of time on the other teams as well (as depressing as that is right now, blackhawks aside.)

Is this entire opinion a knee jerk reaction of sorts, maybe, time will tell I suppose.

I don't think we're trying to be overly negative

just brainstorming on the issues with the second line.

I also wouldn’t couple Buff bashing and Huet bashing as a generalization on fan opinion, I would couple Huet and Campbell bashing…..that typically comes in pairs.

I wasn't coupling them as if they go together

It was more of mentioning them as the usual suspects. However, you are right- Campbell bitching is like an Olympic sport.

by Mike Martin on Dec 5, 2009 4:09 PM CST up reply actions

well gee...

should we start railing on Tazer for being a deadweight now, because he ISN’T one of the usual suspects?

Buff’s actions, to me, are commensurate to the amount of grief I give him, and neither is it comparable to the Huet bashing that goes on around here, which yes, you did implicitly couple together when you said “Wouldn’t be a GDT with people bitching about Buff and/or Huet.”

Though I believe the word you were looking for to express your point was “without”.

by chiblackhawks on Dec 5, 2009 4:42 PM CST up reply actions

The lack of an edit feature is annoying

Because yes, I was going for “without” and figured it would be clear enough without me replying to my own post.

And that fact you see the crap you talk about Buff as deserved doesn’t change the fact that is the same shit on every thread. It may not be posted by you, but it never fails someone has to go into it.

Thanks for the English lesson though. Where should I send my tuition check?

Chicagoan in the Lou.

by Mike Martin on Dec 5, 2009 5:03 PM CST up reply actions

Well

yeah, I didn’t see the post as a let’s get our hate on post. We have others to bash now. But, I kinda agree. I mean, I thought Buff was really trying last night, and didn’t see much good come of it. And he was actually not asleep, and how many of those games do we actually get from him?

What would be wrong with a Steeg-Kane-Sharp line?

Or, like Sam mentioned, I’d be interested in what Brouwer could bring being moved up.

Well, we’ll probably see a lot of different matchups tonight. :)

If I can't be a good example, I'll just be a horrible warning

by Trixietrx on Dec 5, 2009 5:15 PM CST up reply actions

I think the big problem with a steeg sharp kane line

would be the inability to win board battles. Kaner is stronger on the puck this year, but it still wouldn’t be enough I don’t think.

That’s why it’d be fun to see:
Steeg-Toews-Hossa
Brouwer-Sharp-Kane
Buff-Madden-Ladd

Seems like it’d be worth a shot, that second line would have a completely different look, which is what it needs.

I was out to dinner with friends last night, so

my observation is that Pollo Al Salvia was delicious at Mia Francesca’s, and is perfectly paired with their Zinfindel.

by Trixietrx on Dec 5, 2009 5:19 PM CST up reply actions

That’s the worst rumour I’ve heard yet. There are many suspects on this team that I would believe would ‘pull-a-Heatley’ and voice their displeasure about their playing time and position, but not Sharp. If anything he does more than what he should as one of the true snipers on this squad. If anything else it would Versteeg complaining about not playing centre.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

by hawks61 on Dec 5, 2009 5:26 PM CST up reply actions

This is going to be a good one for sure.

To watch Malkin (maybe the best forward) go head-to-head against Keith (maybe the best defenceman) should be one interesting match-up to say the least. Then you add the fact that these two teams are the two favoured to reach the Stanley Cup Finals, well, you have yourself a heavyweight match-up. Sure Crosby is out with a groin injury (I can hear the whole country of Canada cheering now), but the Pengiuns have proven to be better without Crosby especially with Malkin leading the way.

Wouldn’t be suprised if Huet convinced Q to have him start this tilt tonight. As a competitor he would definitely want this start. Would it not be lovely to see the TAZER duplicate his feat of last year and notch a trick, albeit in a winning cause this time?

Who else is listening to “You’re Going Down” by Sick Puppies to get pumped up for this one?

I know tebow just threw a pick

The game has been a damn shame. I’m probably in the minority, but I love watching Tebow play college football, and he hasn’t seen much of the field because bama keeps leading ridiculous and time consuming drives.

"If you're scared, go buy a dog" - Stacey King

by hackerar on Dec 5, 2009 6:16 PM CST up reply actions

nah

Clausen, Jake Locker, Sam Bradford, maybe even McCoy will go in the draft before Tebow. Plus Oakland is fresh off of taking a reach and drafting Russell, another Top five quarterback bust and they’d probably consider hiring Matt Millen.

As much as I like Tebow, he’s no pro quarterback. Let’s ignore the automatic deficiency that is being lefty, and move on to the fact that he doesn’t run a pro style offense, has a slow release, telegraphs his passes, and throws an ugly ball.

Sorry, I blacked out there, forget this was a hockey blog…..I’m back now.

Really cheap, good hockey and really fun when they play the wolves.

However its Rockford, we are not suburban though. Rockford is a weird ghetto/hillbilly hybrid. Did I mention I am very close to getting the hell out of here…

It’s the one thing ’Nucks and ’Hawks fan can agree on – the hatred of Matt Cooke.

Great 1st period

But the ’Hawks have to start hitting the net when they have their chances. Kane, Brouwer, Sharp, and Eager all missed the net on excellent chances.

Pitt announcers watching a different game

After the Keith hit on Cooke they are looking for someone to headshot Toews or Kane and saying the Hawks are playing dirty. Then Keith gets punched in the face, Toews takes a headshot and that’s “taking the body”. The color guy is a douchbag. WTF is Buff when the other team is going after our guys? Can he hit somebody? With the performance tonight

and the Vancouver shutout, he’s earned some more starts. Huet’s good and is the clear No. 1, but you can’t say that Niemi hasn’t played his way into more ice time.

Niemi should get more starts.

If only to help keep Huet more rested. Niemi should get at least a quarter, probably closer to a third of the starts if he keeps playing well.

I made the comment last night that this

Was a huge game to see if the Hawks were Cup worthy. Some Douche said it didn’t matter.

Hawks win and do it with D, grit, and great net minding.

Q has really turned this tean from a Cluster to disciplined. The defense in front of the net last year was awful and now they are damn good.

I hope they get a grip and don’t read the banwagoners like Morrissey because they have a long ways to go, but that was a big win.
