Two Pickets to Tittsburgh - Hawks 2, Pens 1 (OT)

It is written. I have spoken. So put this in your pipe And smoke it.

This will be brief, as again, I have professional-grade drinking to do. Tonight's matchup lived up to the hype, and it definitely had a playoff type atmosphere. There was certainly a LOT of animosity between the two teams for only playing once a year, as exhibited by the exchange of pleasantries early on between Duncan Keith and Matt Cooke. Keith was lucky to only receive two minutes for his 200-foot charge, and Marian Hossa buried one of the few rebounds Marc-Andre Fleury (in top form) allowed all night on the ensuing four on four. Patrick Kane led the rush, and fought off two defenders along the boards to feed a late Brian Campbell, whose shot Hossa put home. That Kane, I tell ya- too soft, and lazy.

In the second, it once again became the Antti Niemi show, who had an answer for everything Pitt threw at him. There were no penalties after the early going, and the teams traded chances throughout. Last night's game appeared to be catching up with the Hawks. Pittsburgh finally drew even with the extra attacker when a puck kicked free to Jordan Staal who as all alone and had 6x4 to shoot at.

Into overtime, VERSTEEG! ended it by poking his own rebound past Fleury after a Brian Campbell-led rush. Hawks go home happy, 2-1.

Observations

  • Niemi was once again stellar. Let the goalie controversy begin anew.
  • While the Penguins did have a lot of quality chances, the Hawks did a nice job of clearing pucks from the middle of the ice
  • The ice seemed to be in even shittier condition than it usually is at the Igloo, as many pucks rolled off sticks for both teams
  • On the flipside, however, the Igloo does play some kickass jams during stoppages- note "3's and 7's" from Queens of the Stone Age during the second
  • Matt Cooke is a turd burglar. He burgles ALL the turds.

Once again, Antti Niemi played an excellent game, stopping 31 shots, many of them in spectacular fashion.

Its been so fun to wach Niemi grow

He spent alot of time in Rockford last year…

The question is can he stay consistent.. Huet is still doing a pretty damn good job right now thankfully. Not sure if we will be able to answer the original question this year

Pittsburgh definitely didn’t make the most of their chances. I haven’t seen such sloppy finishing outside of Extreme Facials.

How nice to have a potential goalie controversy as a result of the backup playing at an outstanding level, rather than the starter performing poorly. All of a sudden it seems as though we have two good goalies….rather than the ZERO many assumed at the start of the year. Of course, we know how quickly that can turn.

Boys looked tired (understandably) for much of the game, seemed to be sitting on the lead for most of the time after Hossa’s goal, but two points on the road against the defending Cup champs is two points well earned.

The Queens of the Stone Age tune as well. Puts the bozos at the UC to shame. If we could only get them to play some Them Crooked Vultures…

Puts them to shame because the Penguins media people played AH good song?

Did you not hear the incredibly annoying “AAAARRRRE YOOOOOOOOUUUU REAAAAAAAADDDDDY” Introduction? They make it sound like you’re about to watch an NBA game. They suck.

Yeah but

Its a bunch of lazy, unmotivated, over-paid players playing in a league more focused on corporate sponsorship than building fan bases. We might complain here occasionally about refs being inconsistent, but the NBA is ridiculous.
I really enjoy good basketball, but it seems like the NBA is trying to kill all things exciting. Notice the lack of theatrics in the college game, yet they manage to put out a more entertaining product.

I was hoping for a BCS mess

One thing I liked though: Coaches and fans seem to always say they didn’t play well or execute if things don’t go their way. However, Mack Brown and Colt McCoy both said that thier offensive struggles weren’t them, but actually just great defense by Nebraska.

Bama isn't that much better than florida, but I'll give credit where it's due

You could see that Bama played a near flawless game. Perfect gameplan coming to fruition on the offensive side of the ball, killed the Gators with time of possession.

While I admit that I deserve any hypocrite comments that follow this post,

I know I bashed Huet early on, saying that I believed Niemi should get the nod at the starting job, but, isn’t it nice to have two goalies where you dont have to cringe anytime a shot is taken? While I know there are still people who do just that when Huet is between the pipes, I think we are very fortunate to have a more than capable starter/backup combo. While it was tough to see most of the game with the shitty online feeds (screw Illinois State University and their lack of WGN Chicago) the whole team looked solid tonight, minus some of the second period. Big 2 points for the Hawks.

Anyone watch the game on NHL Center Ice?

Because I live in Wisconsin, I had to watch tonight’s game on the Center Ice feed, which was the Pittsburgh broadcast. What HORRIBLE announcers! I understand announcing for the home team, but these guys made Pierre McGuire look unbiased. The Penguins could do no wrong (“they came out with an edge”) while the Hawks were dirty players apparently. I did catch our radio guys saying Keith’s hit was the same thing that Cooke does and it was payback, but the Pens’ announcers thought it was something close to murder.

I know they’re the current Cup holders and a great team, but the arrogance of the announcers was ridiculous. It makes me appreciate Pat and Edzo even more. (Though Edzo gets pretty irritating too, but for different reasons.)

totally agree

i’m within the pitt broadcast region on fsn, couldn’t stand them. thank god crosby didn’t play, the slobbing was limited to well, sidney can do whatever he wants in this league. btw, does anyone know why center ice never uses the hawks broadcast? every game, home or away, i’m stuck with the opponent.

I always get the Hawks' broadcast

on Center Ice unless it’s being shown on WGN. Then, for some reason, I can only get the opposing team’s feed. Usually, I get to enjoy the Pat and Edzo show. I don’t have any HD channels so that may be why I don’t get the game telecasts on WGN. I think those are HD only.

I get NOTHING when the game’s on Versus/Comcast/Satan’s Messengers.

And at night, I can usually get the Chicago radio stations well enough to follow the game there if I have to.

holy shit

I couldn’t even listen to them anymore; they brought Homerism to escalating heights.

and talk about double-standards… how is Keith not fighting Cooke any different from Malkin not fighting Fraser; how is Keiths’ shot to the head suspenadable but Malkins is funny because “he got 3 for a quarter”..on and on

They make Mickey Redmond look like…well, maybe not

by WirtzGMnomore on Dec 6, 2009 10:56 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed.

Also – when there was that little fuss between Malkin and Fraser, the announcers just start laughing when Fraser gets cross-checked and elbowed in the face by Malkin to the ground.
Yet, the Hawks are dirty players.

Pitt Announcers

I used to have the Center Ice package and when Crosby first got intop the league there was a lot of nob slobbing on him, but now they are on the whole team! I can appreciate announcers being for their team but those two got more ridiculous as the Penguins got better. The only thing that comes close is the Washington announcers with Ovechkin and the Caps . . . Maybe it is just an East Coast thing? Anyway, two points for a hard fought win in back-to-back nights, nice work boys.

it is a fucking nightmare to get a cab in pittsburgh

just thought you guys should know.

It was downright deflating to have Staal tie it up, but let’s be honest here—if he hadn’t, the Hawks fans in attendance wouldn’t have found a reason to jump for joy and cheer very loudly when Steeger scored in overtime.

Good times.

I'm not so sure.

The Wheel Of Justice™ is pretty lenient towards better players. I think the NHL would want to keep Keith on the ice, especially after signing a big contract in a big market. (Assuming politics play into the suspensions as everyone believes.)

If the NHL is serious about punishing headshots

Which we know they’re not, but let’s pretend-

If they are, Dunc should sit a game or two for that hit. While I don’t think it was intentional, it was still a crazy dangerous hit.

If we want to go by those rules..

In my eyes it “appeared” Keith’s hit wasn’t directed purposely at Cooke’s head…

(How some described Mitchell’s hit on Toews – clearly dangerous, but still clean.)

by PepeSilvia on Dec 6, 2009 2:03 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Keith’s hit was, by far, less dangerous than the hit Ladd gave to D’Agostini and he recieved no suspension. Neither did Stafford last season for a similar hit on Keith. So I seriously doubt that he’ll be suspended.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

GO HAWKS!!!

I thought the first period was pretty even, maybe a slight advantage to the Hawks because of the goal……second period the Pens dominated, but they couldn’t get a goal…..and then the third period and overtime obviously belonged to the Hawks, allowing a total of 7 shots on goal between the 3rd and overtime, while the Hawks doubled them up and had 14….

Glad Dunc nailed Cooke…Gena Malkin is a russian cunt, the bick ugly prick was all over colin fraser on that faceoff in the third, dirty frankenstein lookin piece of shit…

It was awesome to see Hossa score a goal against his former team, and he was amazing on the fore check and back check….considering the Hawks had tired legs playin the 2nd of a back to back great great GREAT WIN!!!

The future

I know it’s very early still…but is that anyone else’s dream Stanley Cup match up? It did not take long for those 2 teams to start fighting and a seven game series would be a blast (although I doubt it would go 7)

by ElijahJones22 on Dec 6, 2009 9:02 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

EASY now

Like I said last night, the D had a lot of breakdowns. Niemi making spectacular save after spectacular save requires, at a minimum, Pittsburgh getting off good scoring chances. That’s on the D. Room for improvement certainly is there.

When we’ve won, we usually give up a minimum of shots — that did not happen tonight. And when you give Malkin (or players of his talent) multiple shots, eventually you are going to let one in (as happened in the last two minutes of regulation, with Staal cleaning up the rebound).

The point ends up being a cliche — full effort for the entire game is required. That’s what is needed to make a deep playoff run…. nothing less.

(Me: my dream matchup is Hawks – Caps. Just to see Ovie get his on the world’s biggest stage. But let us speak of this again in April.)

I do agree with you

but to a certain extent…the hawks played the second of a back to back, with their backup goalie, and i understand that the pens didn’t have Sidney Crosby and yada yada yada Crosby would have this would have that as the pens fans would say….i thought most of the shots weren’t that tough because the D wouldn’t give them good angles,i do agree that Niemi made some spectacular saves, and so did Fleury…u r right, full effort the entire game

On another note, the Hawks play the Caps and Pens this year as the second games of back to backs,i think this is the NHL trying to give the superstar players an edge

chiblackhawks said 5-0-2….and to me that seems pretty amazing!!to go 5-0-2 on the second games of back to backs is huuuuuge!it jus shows how well they are playing defensively…7 down 11 or 12 more to go!i believe Edzo said that the Hawks have a total of 18 or 19 back to backs this year, can’t remember the exact number……hmmmm….i wonder how many the caps and pens have,if they have less back to backs than most teams, then it is the NHL and Gary Buttman being evil geniuses, even though i hardly think of Buttman as a genius

I thought the only Hawk

to have a bad game last night was Versteeg, and he had the game winner. I thought Hammer, Sopel, Seabrook, Buff, Kane, Toews, Hossa and the 4th line were all excellent. And Anti-goal was unreal.

The Pens are a strong team full of offense and at home they’re going to get their shots. Pitt ran into a strong goalie and maybe were a lucky bounce away from a win, but the Hawks did what they had to do to get 2pts on the road. I’ll take it.

by Scott13 on Dec 6, 2009 12:20 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Don't forget

Pitt got totally outplayed in game 5 last year, and the end of the third in game 7, and still wound up with the Cup.

It isn’t total domination at all times that matters. It isn’t even being a better team overall. What is important is who has scored more goals at the end of 4 games in June. I know we’d all love to have a team as completely dominant as Detroit was for the past few years, but we only need to have a team that can get results against a dominant side.

by meeshak on Dec 6, 2009 12:27 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

What's it like to be KING!

Was that an exciting game or what? Did that game, more than any other this season, ever get those playoff juices flowin’? That was certainly one of the best games I’ve seen all season from start to finish. Great stuff which begs the question, what if these 2 were to meet in the Finals?

Niemi was spectacular again and deserves more ice-time, which isn’t a slight against a very good of late Huet as it speaks to level of play from Niemi. Versteeg continued to dramatic in-game ascent from being vilified to glorified. With another beautiful goal “the Verstud” continues to impress with his gifted skills, if only he could use some of that in the defensive and neutral zone areas. How about some love thrown towards Hendry? His presence on the 4th line seemed to be the tonic that has cured that line from it’s early season sickness as it was effective all night. It also could have been the deletion of Kopecky, but I’d rather give props to Hendry as he deserves it more.

Overall, I’m getting pretty fucking excited about this team and their possibilities. I try not to get too far ahead of myself sometimes but now, more than ever, it’s getting harder to resist.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

Not to be too negative but...

Once again I found myself shouting at the boob tube “could someone please hit the fucking net?”. It seems that it’s an epidemic this year as everyone from Kane to Eager has trouble with their marksmenship. Why? I have no idea. Kane, from observation, seems to miss the net more than anyone but that is mostly due to his overall improved play that has led to more quality scoring chances. A little more finish PK88, that’s all.

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!

truth about the pendicks.....

this team was about to move a few years back BUT butt of all jokes Bettman wanted them to stay, how Ironic is it that right after that, they end up getting first round draft picks and also second round. After watching the game, I then relized that this is Bettmans team. bullshit after bullshit hits against the hawks. That hit was as good as any other hit given to us. What is bullshit is that Cooke is one of the most dirtiest players out there and got what he deserved but after Keith TKO’d his ass there was no call. Then when Cooke retaliated then they gave us the penalty.
And I really don’t want to touch the subject on their announcers, because they are also a bunch of assholes.
PENS GOT WHAT THE DESERVED!

by redtribe14 on Dec 7, 2009 12:39 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

look, you're obviously lost. The tin foil collective is in Detroit.

Let’s keep the conspiracy theories to ourselves next time, okay? Especially since the Pens ended up with more penalties in that game and Keith got off with only a minor penalty for his hit on Cooke, so if you’re going to argue Bettman bias, you’ll need more than that. Unfair calls happen every game. Good teams find ways to win regardless.
