Whatcha Gonna Do, When Versteeg Runs Wild On You?

I don't think I need to add anything to this.

(Thanks to Gallagher from Gametime for sending this along.  Now he can go back to to his cave.)

Versteeg

Went right over to the guy and gave him “the gun show” after the winner. What a complete badass.

I don't know

He drives me nuts. He makes either dumb plays or spectacular plays. And you never know what you’re going to get. So how about VERSTEEG!?

If I can't be a good example, I'll just be a horrible warning

this is just all around an awesome picture – good job

hmmn..

A Ric Flair reference…maybe Versteeg should have a Flair robe adorning his jersey, or at least a lady on his arm…perhaps a Flair sticker on his helmet.

Thoughts on last night

1. Never seen Keith pull something like that before. Goes to show, if he wanted to play the goon, he’d be awesome at that too. Must’ve been really pissed about being on the receiving end of a cheap shot from that turd-bogart A two-game suspension might be a good thing. The guy needs a breather, and it would be a healthy reminder to everyone what a 27-minute hole looks like.

2. The Kopecky era enters its denouement.. Hooray!

3. Anti-matter was this close to back-to-back 1-0 shutouts v. nucks and pens. Wow!. As someone mentioned in the prior thread, this is the kind of goalie controversy worth having.

4. What an enjoyable game! Pity we’ll see so few wide-open affairs like this. The angst we felt at Pitt’s relentlessness is a taste of the pressure the Hawks now routinely put on the opposition.

5. Steeger’s ratio of flourishes to knuckleheaddery is more like 2 to 1, so maybe VERSTEEG!?!

VERWTF!¡!

I’m not sure I like that.

by meeshak on Dec 6, 2009 12:31 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah

I guess that doesn’t really work. It’s hard to find a name for him that accurately describes his play in a game like last night where you simultaneously want to shoot him and hug his bloody corpse. And then of course there’s shit like this.

by Scott13 on Dec 6, 2009 12:44 PM CST up reply actions

I didn’t need to know that about Ferg-STEEG!

but it didn’t really work out

goalie controversy

I don’t think there’s anything close to the need to even talk goalie controversy. With all the back-to-backs and short rest situations due to the compacted schedule (thanks olympics!) Niemi is going to be playing a ton of games. We just need him to be almost this good when he’s in. We need both of these guys all season. Period.

by hoorock89 on Dec 7, 2009 12:57 AM CST up reply actions

I think that Huet has been just fine

There’s nothing wrong with having 2 good goalies. Niemi may turn out to be better than Huet in the long run, but as of now the Huet/Niemi combo works very well. After Huet’s contracts up it’ll probably be Niemi’s job anyways. They’ll thank Huet for the nice 4 (or will it have been 5?) years and let him be on his way.

Coleslaw, it's what's for Picnic.

by Madlarkin on Dec 7, 2009 9:03 AM CST up reply actions

that's assuming

niemi’s with the Hawks then. he’s up for a contract this year too.

by Kevin Kujawa on Dec 7, 2009 9:40 AM CST up reply actions

we should be

hoping huet continues to play as he has been…it makes him more valuable and easier to trade…

the hawks should seriously be considering a deal that packages huet and skille (since we refuse to play him)…this will free up some cap space….

we then sign niemi and the hammer to long term deals (hopefully the laters longer than then the former)

by sec. 317 on Dec 7, 2009 9:53 AM CST up reply actions

While he's been great in the starts he's gotten,

Niemi has only played in about 12 NHL games. Do we really want to lock him up long term already?

Where do I start?

1. The fact that all teams (other than the odd iron man like Kipper) rely on two goalies during any year is obvious, and more so this year because of the schedule. This fact has no bearing on the issue of a ‘goalie controversy’.

2. A controversy based on two sucky goalies is, well, sucky. My point was that the Hawks controversy, based on performances of late, is not this unpalatable choice, but between two goalies who are playing well.

3. This ‘good’ controversy can be a healthy thing, like any competition.

4. Huey has played better this year than last, but the pattern has been a string of meh, followed by a string of very good games, followed by the recent two meh outings. No reason to expect this pattern not to continue.

5. In 7 games, Anti Em has vastly exceeded expectations. Two (almost 3) SOs and great numbers overall.

6. Come playoff time, teams tend to settle on one goalie (e.g Scum sticking with Osgood last year, the Caps plumping for Varlomov.) The controversy in Detroit didn’t not impair their ability to win a Cup.

7. At the beginning of the year, Huey was the obvious choice. Now, if the playoffs started today, who do you go with? For maybe 20 teams, the answer is obvious. In my opinion, it’s not at all obvious for the Hawks. Thus controversy, but a nice problem to have.

So those homer Pens announcers...

they wouldn’t happen to be Paul Steigerwald and Bob Errey, would they?

Because SI just ranked them 8th in their November Media Power Rankings list. To quote:

8. Paul Steigerwald and Bob Errey, FSN, Penguins announcers: My colleague Michael Farber recently listed the Pittsburgh duo on his list of NHL people who you hardly know but who make their teams or the game better. Of Steigerwald and Errey, Farber wrote, “Usually fans reflexively vaunt the hometown telecast crew. Unfortunately, these two guys don’t even get the proper amount of love in their own city of champions.” Much of that is because Steigerwald is following announcer Mike Lange, winner of the Hockey Hall of Fame’s Foster Hewitt Award for excellence in broadcasting.

Bob Errey is definitely a homer.

He wore the “C” in San Jose for about 2 1/2 years. He was unceremoniously shipped out of town (by then GM Dean Lombardi) about one week after he bought a house in S.J. This may have something to do with his hate of all other NHL teams (especially S.J., Chicago, and Anaheim.) and his hometown “Penguino” love.

Victim was found murdered by a Chelsea Dagger.
