Let's Get Back To Fun City: Stars at Hawks Preview

Don't forget your SPG Picks!

Unfortunately, it doesn't get any easier for the Hawks tonight.  We wouldn't be shocked if tonight's game looks exactly like the trench warfare we saw last night, though the UC ice shouldn't be as bad as the DrinkScotch Center's was.

The bigger problem is that the Hawks are facing one of, if not the, hottest team in the league.  The Stars have won 8 of 11, and have surged from the bottom of the conference to looking pretty much like our first round opponent.  In fact, with facing Dallas twice in a week, they could close on us pretty quickly for the 4 spot with two wins.  Wouldn't that suck?

Dallas has had to deal with a lot more than comments in poor taste about Dion Phaneuf's fuck-buddy.  Their best player, Brendan Morrow, has been lost for most of the season with injury, as has best d-man Sergei Zubov.  They also had to deal with Marty Turco playing the first two months as if in a diabetic coma.  He's turned it around, tonight will almost certainly be his 26th straight start.

As strange as this sounds, the Hawks have to watch out for Steve Ott.  Yes, world class pain in the ass Steve Ott.  Since being moved to the top line with Mike Ribeiro and Jere Lehtinen, that line has produced 46 points in 12 games.  Ott has six goals in that time.  Brad Richards has also been chipping in at a fine rate, making this team quite dangerous.

The Hawks will have to outwork this team, which will not be easy.  They'll face the same tight, physical, nasty tactics they saw last night, and didn't show much of a stomach for.  Dallas is also coming off a tough slog last night, a 2-1 taffy-pull over Vancouver, so there won't be any recency advantage.  This will not be one for the art museums.

Stay tuned for Thor's gametime beer pick...

Tippett confirmed earlier today that Turco will start.

Tough to rest him as he’s playing some incredible hockey lately. 7-2-0 in his last nine with a 1.55 GAA.

While the Stars are definitely playing better than the last time these two teams met, I’m still worried. The Hawks are a fast, young team and have the ability to give the Stars all kinds of fits.

Your gametime video feed and beer

Here’s a little feedy that must be told: http://atdhe.net/live-tv-2.php?i=832

And your gametime beer (back to good beers tonight):

Goose Island Oatmeal Stout
Why? The main reason: because I bought some last night and will be drinking it. The other reasons: it’s a very solid oatmeal stout (one of my favorite brews), it’s brewed in Chicago, and it’s relatively cheap (I picked up a sixer for $8 in fucking Iowa last night). For those lucky enough to be in or around Chicago this evening, it should be pretty easy to procure some of this stout and enjoy its smoky, coffee, and nutty aromas and flavors. Or you could go to one of the two North-side brew pubs, but if you’re doing that, get a cask ale. I forgot which one I had over the summer, but it was incredible.

Anyway, fuck Texas, go Hawks, and good luck convincing your significant other that watching hockey is a romantic activity. I’ll probably miss some of the game as I’ll be eating sushi with mine (or all, depending on how she dictates my life after dinner).

The comments have been lacking lately — the total last night was boosted by some generous Blues fans — and right now I feel like there are a lot Byfuglien-esque commenters (i.e. not contributing or trying). Give me something to read when I get back!

I didn't realize that by "eating sushi"

you actually meant eating sushi. I was thinking, well that’s a reasonable excuse for missing part of the game, but all of it?

Blasphemous

Hell no. Always been brewed in Chicago, right here

Oh...that's good.

Someone told me that Miller owns Goose Island now and its brewed in the Milwaukee brewery, and since I always believe everything ‘someone’ says, I accepted it as fact.

The outmeal stout is good, but I’ve been really digging their winter ale this year. I’d say that’s been my gametime beer of choice about half the games I’ve watched the past couple months. Well, until the six pack runs out, anyways. Then its a mad dash to the bar for some High Life before the shakes set in.

I had this really incredible winter ale at the map room last night. Unfortunately, it was followed with a few too many other delicious beers, and I don’t remember the name of any of it. Next time I go, I’m bringing a notebook.

We needed this game ...

I thought Niemi might get the nod tonight, even though Huet payed really well against the Blues. Same happened when Crawford was called up to be back-up; still, thought it might happen.

So what the fuck is up with this team?

They play a non playoff team, and they look like Satan spooged in their cereal.

But they go against the Sharks or the Flames, or a surging team like the Stars, and they completely dominate the flow of the game. I almost hope the Hawks drop down to the 6 seed for the playoffs, to ensure we move on to the next round.
