Puck Prospectus on the man advantage
Pretty interesting article at Puck Prospectus on how to quantify how much of an advantage drawing a penalty is over the length of a season. They use an example from a Hawks game where Ladd drew a penalty and at the end of the article show that Ladd draws about .4 more penalties than he takes for 60 minutes of play.

Thanks for the link
That’s a really cool and useful way of rating players — especially the contributions of players who don’t get a lot of points.
NOW STOP IT RIGHT HERE
that made my head hurt
A cool way of trying to adjust the +/- to more closely reflect a player’s actual contribution on the ice. In basketball, its much easier to keep track of because they shoot free throws, so there is a direct correllation between drawing penalties and scoring.
This system, though, is weighted against physical play. For a sport that is often governed more by emotional play that running out statistical tendancies (like baseball), a player whose roll it is to make a big hit or rought up the other team to inspire his teamates to play harder, would be devasted by this adjustment. Still though, a pretty thoughtful way to treat the sometimes weird stat of +/-.
By the way, dumbest hockey stat…. shot percentage.
