Around SBN: Clippers Need To Realize That Spurs Are The Anti-Grizzlies

Anyone else having a hard time believing tonight is actually happening?

Backtothecup_medium

First of all - huge thanks to Rusty (rustolleum) for making/sending this in to us - brilliant.

We've all waited years for this and now the day is finally here.  Sometime after 7:30 tonight the puck will drop on the Indian head logo at the center of the United Center ice and our Blackhawks will be not only back in the playoffs but favorites to win their first series in a hell of a long time.

It's been way too long but it makes today even sweeter.  As Hawks fans we all have a reason to be celebrate because even if the Hawks lose this game tonight or this series (god forbid) we have every reason to believe we'll be right back here again next year with a better team and we'll keep coming back for years to come.  Time will tell if we'll see Toews, Keith and all the other guys lift the cup in the Indian head sweater but either way it's going to be an era I'm thrilled to be witnessing.

Everyone's chimed in with their thoughts and we've been over all kinds of stats with probably more to come - there's nothing left to do now but play the game.  Its been in the works for a while but it starts tonight.  We can't believe it and we couldn't be more excited.

I'm not going to get into a huge sappy article yet because there's no need for it.  I just wanted to express a belief probably shared by many - I don't think I've ever been as excited for a game as I am for tonight.  Win or lose... but hopefully win.

I'm heading out soon and don't know if I'll be able to get another post up before game time - so if nothing else shows up use this as your game thread.  Right after the game the writers are all headed off for the radio station (lord help us) so it could be a while before we get any recap up so have fun tonight and most importantly, enjoy it.

Lets Go Hawks

A radio interview AFTER the game?

Does this mean you won’t be boozing tonight? That’s just wrong.

by Sportsgal on Apr 16, 2009 12:28 PM CDT reply actions

get serious...

Just means the interview could get very sloppy.. hence the worries for saying things we shouldn’t on the radio…

Whew.

I was worried… now is not the time to be messing with the traditions like boozing during the game!

I may be a Flames fan, but Im also a hockey fan. Hearing CHI roar again, after being silenced for so long, will be good.

I thought my work day couldn't go any slower...

but it is. Jesus.

I remember how excited I was in ‘02…a young, stupid, drunk college kid with zero cares but the Hawks in the playoffs. I would’ve skipped all my classes today (as I did back then) even if they didn’t interfere with the actual game, simply because the Hawks were the only thing on my mind, and I wanted to start drinking at noon that day…and because of the aforemention attributes I possesed.

It’s crrrrrrrazy to think what a different era that was in my life, and I’m sure the rest of yours. But tonight, Hawk fans, as so eloquently put in this post (bravo, Kill) this is a new, exciting era that gets underway tonight. And Jesus Havlat Christ, I’m beyond pumped. GO HAWKS!!!

Your gametime video feed and beer

As the status of an actual gamethread is uncertain, I figure I’ll post this here first and foremost, then — if need be — I’ll post it in whatever new gamethread may or may not be coming.

We’ll start with the feeds:
http://atdhe.net/live-tv-5827.html
http://www.ustream.tv/channel/tml-hockey

And now, your first playoff beer:

Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA
There are a few reasons I chose this beer for tonight’s game. First and foremost, I haven’t posted it yet. I know I’ve posted the 90 Minute IPA before – it’s one of my favorite imperial IPAs – but this one is a gametime beer virgin. That said, the 60 is probably more drinkable than the 90, and arguably more balanced in terms of taste. I’ve had quite a few IPAs for gametime beers (I had about a week straight where I only posted IPAs), and I know Matt (chicagokill) loves IPAs, so why change for the playoffs? This is a great session beer. I could, if I wasn’t careful, easily drink a sixer of these in the duration of a hockey game (luckily I drank one last night out of the six-pack that’s in my fridge right now, so that won’t happen tonight). This shouldn’t be hard to find; I can even get it in Iowa… which leads me to my other reason why I’m choosing this.

When I came home from school (student teaching) yesterday, there was a note on my fridge that said "Open me for a surprise!" Lo and behold, there was a fresh six-pack of DFH60MIPA sitting there with a note that said something along the lines of "Surprise! I know how much you like this beer, and I wanted to get you something while I was at the grocery store. Love you!" As cheesy as it sounds talking about a girlfriend or a wife on a hockey blog; seriously, how much more awesome can a girlfriend get? Let this little anecdote serve as a reminder to all of you out there with significant others – they still exist (at least in their minds) during the playoffs, and they will (likely) still exist after the playoffs. I’m not saying "Don’t watch the playoffs; take your wife/girlfriend out to dinner instead," but just be careful. Hell hath no fury like a woman neglected as the result of a sporting event.

Thankfully for me, my girlfriend has agreed to watch the playoffs with me.

That said, the ‘Hawks can keep everyone in this situation happy by getting this series over as quickly as possible. Sweep the hell out of the Flames, and bring on the next victims. It’s time to count some coup.

Go Hawks!

Hey mjthor, have you ever had the dogfish head 120 minute IPA? It’s amazing. They’re hard to come by and pretty expensive but they’re delicious, and also a ridiculous 21% alcohol. I have two sitting in my fridge waiting for a special occasion :)

by Steveholt on Apr 16, 2009 11:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance, but I thought it was terrible.

The taste was entirely sweet — fruity, malty, almost honey-like sweet — and alcohol. The hops were there, but they were almost unnoticeable. Any complexity in the taste was masked by the sweetness of the malt and the heavy presence of the unsubtle alcohol. Maybe I’ll give it another shot if and when I can justify spending $15 on a 12oz bottle (though I’d much rather spend the extra $2 and get a sixer of HopSlam).

Any chance the Habs get this done?

http://www.boston.com/sports/extras/sportstownusa/ – god, they make it so easy to root against them.

The Blackhawks should win this series, but maybe they’ll get afflicted with “Happy to be here-itis”. I like to think that anything after just making the playoffs this year is gravy (but next year my expectations will be there), but I think I’d prefer an ouster at the hands of the Flames to an elimination by the Scum.

But no eliminations at all would be nice :)

It's defintely has been a long time!!!

But this is going to be fun…I hope so! Still a bit nervous considering the results of the home opener, the Winter Classic, Vancouver game, and the night the Hawks could have clinched home-ice in the 1st round- All losses. All in all it should be an entertaining game with the Hawks winning in the end, we all hope. Beer should go down smooth tonight! LET’S GO HAWKS!!!
It’s been 12 years since a Hawks player scored on home ice in the playoffs, any dibs on who gets it?
My pick: Kaner!
Although that’s really not going on a limb.

Sharing the iPhone love,

Don’t get me wrong ‘Hawks fans – as nice as it will be to hear the raucous Chicago arena of old – I have no doubt my Flames are somehow going to get their act together in the next seven (or hopefully fewer). But I’m not so blinded by homerism, that I don’t respect the hell of a team you’ve got (and one I’d be rooting for, were the matchups different).

If any of you (like me) are ex-pats unable to get local television or radio coverage, I’ve put instructions on how to get either the FAN590 OR WGN 720 game radio live on one’s iPhone here: http://www.bradfox.com/blog/2009/04/nhl-radio-on-the-iphone/

Here’s hoping for a great series.

by WpgMikos on Apr 16, 2009 10:18 PM CDT reply actions

No, Pit Martin in 1972

also scored in :12, into an OT game….so, this ties the Blackhawks record.

Going back into the records, it had to have been against Pittsburgh in a 4-game sweep of the Pens. The Hawks were then swept by the Rangers in the next round.

But that wasn’t as painful as the year before, as this (then) 16-year-old was stunned as the Habs eliminated a 2-1 Chicago lead in in the 3rd period of Game 7 of the Finals.

Listening to Lloyd Petit on the radio….I was thankful I did not actually see the 2-3rd period goals…

Seems like 100-years ago….

After 12 years...

…the first Hawks goal at home was scored by ..Barker? Cam Barker? Wonder how many people had him to break the curse? Not many! Hawks down 2-1 and Marty Havlat comes to the rescue, ties it up 2-2 (what a goal) then wins it in OT (12 seconds) absolutely amazing! The young Hawks looked nervous at first but in the end prevailed LET’S GO HAWKS!!! Up 1-0 in the series and 15 more to go!!!

Yeah. It seemed consistent

with how they called the game overall. Had they called goalie interference, I would have booed the shit out of them, until I saw the replay back at home. It could’ve been called. But a lot of things could’ve been, and Ladd was tied up with the defender. So, I don’t blame them for getting worked up over it, but they’ll have to get over it.

1. B. Skrudland (MTL) – 5/18/86 at CGY – 0:09 sec
2. J.P Parise (NYI) – 4/11/75 at NYR – 0:11 sec

3. M. Havlat (CHI) – 4/17/09 vs CGY – 0:12 sec

PensBurgh penalty - Lavender - 2 minutes for hijynxing.

by Lavender on Apr 17, 2009 12:20 AM CDT reply actions

I expected better out of an NHL bench boss

but I guess I should have known better.

Well in ESPN’s recap they have a quote from Keenan:
“I believe it was Ladd who did not try to stop his movement toward the net and that’s goaltender interference,” Keenan said. “However, the officials saw it different or didn’t make the call because of the excitement of overtime.”

Come on coach. Show some accountability here. Don’t go whining about the refs. I guess guys will say anything with their job on the line.

P.S. I’m fucking stupid and can’t figure out how to make that into a blocked quote.

You and I are gonna live forever
