April 20th - Beard of the Day: Tommy Chong
Because today is... something... right?
Chong has always rocked a solid beard - even after being jailed on a BS charge back in '03 I'm sure Chong had the nicest beard in the joint. By the way, in 2003 the state of Pennsylvania spent $12 Million and used over 2,000 officers to bring down Chong and others who were selling pipes. Good job PA. Great priorities.

"Oh, that's easy. White Sox. I'm not one of these fair-weather fans. You go to Wrigley Field, you have a beer; beautiful people up there. People aren't watching the game. It's not serious. White Sox, that's baseball. South Side." -O'Bama
I think we can expect lazy Buff
to make a return appearance tonight.
Got more soul than a sock with a hole.
Then Keenan will really have something to whine about.
You don’t want to be caught between a glazed Buff and his Cool Ranch doritos.
Got more soul than a sock with a hole.
Buffalo has been on a roll
Let’s hope he’s finally figured out he’s bigger than most on the ice and keeps using his weight to his advantage. If only someone could help Walker’s hockey IQ…
I still think Campbell has been a greater liability on D than Walker. I don’t think Walker should be a Norris candidate, but I don’t actually think he looks as lost out there as Phantom 51.
Maybe we need to rethink Soup
Think the word “offenseman.” His job here, the reason we signed him, was to improve the power play and jump in on the rush (I believe the current term used in the NHL is to “activate the defensemen”) when possible. Our powerplay was much improved in the beginning of the season, and a lot of credit goes to Soupy for that; his puck movement was very good, and he can thread a shot with the best of the blueliners. When he had Aaron “Mighty” Johnson as his partner, he could jump up in the rush and still have some time to get back because Johnson was capable enough to control a team’s breakout on his own.
Since being paired with Wiggum, Soupy has to concentrate more on the defensive aspects of the game; I know it’s in his job title, but remember that we did not sign him for his shutdown defensive capabilities. Anyhow, he now has to take more minutes babysitting Ralph, which makes him less effective on the PP.
He’s not a minute-muncher like Dunc or Biscuit, nor does he have their physical game. What he does have is speed, maneuverability and a quick and accurate pass. Tallon knew all of this when he signed him, and so did I. I have not been terribly disappointed by his game this season, with the exception of the time he’s spent with Ralph.
I offer no excuses for his lack of enthusiasm as of late; maybe he is tired. On every other team he has played with, he had a partner that was a solid, stay-at-home, smart defender: in Buffalo he had Kalinin, Lydman, and (the much improved) Spacek; the Sharks paired him most often with Semenov and Murray (on the PP he teamed with Pickles). Giving him Walker as a partner is like giving a mom of four a retarded, spastic child; she will most likely not have the energy to blow daddy for fixing the leaky pipe after dinner.
I’m sorry if I ramble, but I just get tired of people hoping to get ten pounds of gold out of a nine-pound package. We have a very good offenseman, if he is used and partnered correctly.

There was an article in the Indian
Sometime back regarding the signing of Soup. The readers digest version is that we knew what we were getting – basically supporting your post. I don’t remember which issue it was but I’m 99% sure it was in March. Any chance of getting the back issues from March posted?
I also agree that Walker makes anyone he is paired with infinitely worse.
I’m not looking for ten pounds in a nine-pound package, but I am looking for more than 7 or 8. He’s still a great puck-mover even in his worst games; but on his other teams he led the roster in ice-time, and though prone to mistakes then, too, he was also counted on to be a first-pairing defenseman.
I figured we weren’t going to get gold from him night in and night out, especially with Dunc logging the minutes he does, but we do need him to step up and be interested, regardless of his partner. If Campbell is our 4th D behind Dunc, Biscuit and Barker, then no matter what you were expecting from him, paying him 7 million until 2016 is fucking preposterous.
I should add, too, I’ve defended Campbell more often than not, even to the point of stubbornness. He’s got to pick it up now, though, he’s looking disinterested, maybe the worst thing a hockey player can be.
And hasn’t he been paired with Hammer recently, not Wiggum?
Doesn’t seem to matter who on this team you pair Phantom with, he disappears. He doesn’t excite the power play. Barker, Seabrook, and Keith do. Sure, we didn’t know Barker was gonna get Hockey Skills for Christmas this year, but Phantom sure could have earned 3/4 of his money. Where was he in March and the beginning of April? Wiggum wasn’t paired with him that whole time but Ralph did have more points than Campbell in what, a 1/4 the ice time?

I think the pairing with Hammer
is more for Hammer’s benefit than it is for Soup. To be honest, the only aspect of Soup’s game that has given me trouble is that ennui that Chico points out; he has looked disinterested of late, but that might also be because his role on the team is changing and not because of his talent diminishing, but because of coaching. I like that Q has tightened this team defensively; I really like how he turned the bizarre combo of D. Ladd Soul into one of the best all-around lines in the Western Conference. I have real issues with his use of defensemen, which is odd, considering he was a defenseman when he played.
