Superstition

Now that the Hawks have emerged from the first round of the playoffs, it's very clear that everything we've all been doing at home has propelled them to victory. This post is just an open thread to find out what everyone has been doing to keep the Hawks alive and kicking. I have more than my fair share of things that have clearly had a direct cause and effect relationship with the Hawks' season to this point.

Obviously, I have not shaved since before the playoffs stared. But I've also not gotten a haircut since last June, right after last hockey season ended. Before home games, the pregame playlist must include The Gaslight Anthem's "Drive", Propaghandi's "Dear Coach's Corner", and  Mastodon's "Divinations" and "Colony of Birchmen". If I am attending the game, I have to drive down Western Ave to the UC, never Ashland. I must buy a copy of The Indian from Sam (as everyone should) outside of Gate 3. Of our two season seats, I have to be in seat #13. And at home games, I must have my Patrick Sharp sweater on over the top of my Lawrence Arms hooded sweatshirt.

For road games, I make sure to completely avoid that playlist, and I do not wear my sweater or any other Blackhawks related apparel.

So...what are the nonsensical things everyone else does in the name of Blackhawks victory?

The Anthem

I missed the Anthem for Game 1 due to soccer practice, Outcome Good!! I was at Game 2 in person so that doesn’t count, nor would i miss that for the world. I watched it game 3 and 4 on the road, outcome bad. I also wore my Chinese WC Toews jersey for Game 2. So for Game 5 and 6 i didn’t put it on until right before the Anthem was to be played and walked upstairs to get it so i would miss them. Outcome..,. GREAT!!! I also missed Blogging here for game 4 and made sure i didn’t miss that again. Weird bunch of people hockey fans are

That’s like saying that Krystal Steal gives better blowjobs than Devon. It simply can’t be proven one way or the other, and there really is no wrong answer.

Nope; you're wrong.

The Hawks Win...

every period that I drink a beer in. So far, it works best with Miller products, with High Life and Miller Lite being most effective. I will continue to research this and drink the Hawks to a Stanley Cup if necessary.

Because I love the fans.

Can't argue with High Life.

It’s one of my favorite cheap beers. That and their most recent marketing campaign is pretty awesome — and I hate most advertisements.

At least we agree on this. At $11.99 an 18-pack at the Jewel (yes, THE Jewel, there’s only ever been one), they’re giving it away.

I don’t think you’ll survive a minimum of 12 more games of Miller products, especially the High Life.

Its pretty simple...

I wore the old Blackhawks sweatshirt for all home games, and all resulted victories. I wore the same sweatshirt for away games and all resulted in losses, so last night I switched it up and put back on the Chinese Toews Winter Classic Jersey for the away game, resulting in a victory.

Also, last night before the game, I got engaged, while wearing the Toews Jersey, and it resulted in us winning the series. I’m not sure how I can replicate that for Round 2, but if necessary, I’m willing to continue to reinact my proposal until the Hawks win the Cup.

And thus begins my search.

This is a declaration to any woman that loves the hawks as much as me, take one for the team and accept my proposal on the eve of our 4th win against the Canucks. If its a home game, I think we need to do this on the streets of West Madison.

Your fiance was decked out in a Chinese Sharp jersey or something of that nature at the time

It’s Hilarious you mention that because she actually does have a chinese Sharp Jersey, but I’m sad to say, she was not wearing it at the time.

I must have at least four Sleeman Clear in the beer fridge for each game. Other beers may accompany them, but there must be at least four Sleeman Clear in the fridge. The first beer consumed also must be a Sleeman Clear.

I must have a Hawks sweater on. If we won the previous game, I wear the sweater I last wore. If we last the previous game, a different one is rotated in.

I have not shaved since the night before our first playoff game.

I can NOT watch the game anywhere else other than my basement. Which now brings a serious predicament. We’re moving on Sunday. How do I explain to my girlfriend that I’m not leaving?

Jersey

I donned my red Probert jersey for games 1, 2 and 3. After Jokinen’s 2nd goal in game 4 (when they went up by 3), I went upstairs, switched into my blank black jersey and left for work. By the time I got down to my car, VERSTEEG! had scored and they quickly erased the deficit after that. Yes, the lost the game, but I stuck with the black jersey for game 5 and 6.

During the 2nd intermission last night I actually took my jersey off because I was sweating my ass off in the house. Bertuzzi scored real quick, so I threw the sweater back on and that was the end of Calgary’s luck.

I feel kind of bad for costing Nik the shutout, but winning the series is what really matters.

Also, I have not shaved since the playoffs started and will not be getting a haircut (which I desperately needed prior to the playoffs) until after Captain Marvel is raising the Cup.

I like boobs.

I forgot to mention

I obviously need to post video feeds and a gametime beer for every game.

I have neglected to do this before the start of the game once, but I did it anyway for the sake of tradition/superstition.

Foooooood.

I eat pizza at home before every road game— and some home games if I wasn’t able to go due to school— (didn’t work for games 3 and 4, but it did for 6 so I guess that works out).

But if I’m at the UC like I was for Games 1, 2, and 5; I have a hot dog, unless I’ve already had Jimmy John’s. Therefore, I have some options to work with for home games .

I haven’t shaved since the Blackhawks clinched the playoffs on April 3. I intended to shave the night before Game 1 on April 15, but I wasn’t arsed enough to break out the razor, so it’s still going. And might I add that my 18-year-old beard is better than Patrick Kane’s as of right now according to my father. :P

Let’s see… what else? Jersey. I have a white Blackhawks jersey (no name on the back) that my father bought for me when I was born in 1991. I’ve worn it for every game they won at home since the the last time I switched back to it from the Kaner jersey I also have. And last night.

Furthermore, I’ve got a black tshirt with the Blackhawks logo right in the middle of it that I’ve worn underneath with the white jersey for the stretch run. Haven’t washed the tandem since the last time the Hawks lost at home…. which has been awhile.

I was at track meets for Games 3 and 4, so I wasn’t able to wear it during those games which is probably why they lost… FUCK!

I mentioned my Kaner jersey. It’s red and I got for my birthday in January and wore it to the Rangers game that night- unfortunately they lost that one, but that hasn’t gotten much work as of late, obviously.

I think that’s all…

Feel free to email me at any time. =] Just let me know you're from SecondCityHockey!

There are so many rituals, too many to list here...

I haven’t shaved either, and I can’t wait to shave (I really am thinking about it because i’m walking around like some damn Alberta lumberjack bastard). The route to the game is from Warren to the east $16 lot walk up Madison, get the Indian, pick up the $12 pizza in the NE corner (not the Connie’s hack pizza), drink half the beer before the pregame skate, stand at attention while Johnny T conducts pregame skate, see who is the last player off the ice (game 5 was Brouw), then make my way to the escalator and enjoy the second half of my beer before I see my beer guy at the top of the escalator (I wish my beer guy was Ninja Beer Guy Dennis… but he is not part of the ritual, too far away), must be in seat before the Indian head is stitched on the crest if not sooner. The rest does not have to be mentioned, but: ITS PLAYOFF TIME! YOU BETTER HAVE YOUR WARPAINT!

RALLY MULLET!!!

We notices the Hawks were scoring goals every time this fine individual showed up on our screen, ad we’ve started using him before every power play.

Last night, we posted him onto our site before the game started…

Wore my black ’Hawks visor for all 4 wins, and somehow forgot to for the two road game losses.

That thing is not leaving my head for the ’Nucks series.

No freaking way.

Every time Edzo or P Foley mentions Toews’ nickname of “Mr. Serious”, I have to go to my guitar on commercial breaks and play “Serious” by Scars on Broadway.

Its seemed to work out ok since Cpt. Marvel is ridiculous.

I wear the same jersey to every game I go to which is my personalized red 44 sweater. I haven’t washed it all year even after I blew a tire on the way to the game about a month ago. The sleeves are all dirty from changing the tire, but I leave it as a reminder that my roommate and I manned up and changed it right in the middle of a bad area of the city rather than calling roadside assistance and missing the game. Hawks beat the preds 3-1. I tried to temp fate and wear my chinese kane jersey out for game 3. Dumb. Then I had to trim and cleanup my playoff beard before game 4 because I had to go to a funeral. I wasn’t happy about it when i did it and even more upset when they lost. so when I had my cousins wedding this weekend i said fuck it i dont care if i havent seen any of these people in years im rocking the shitty playoff beard and if they ask why I’m not ashamed to let them know who my team is.

So I think i have my rituals figured out for the next series. Only the red 44 sweater and trim/cleanup the beard for no one.

The whole "nothing ever happens on the power play" routine

unveiled at Huttenbar on Wednesday (wherein I left the building and smoked until the end of the PP) just demonstrates how weird superstitions are. Has no actual effect on the game. Zero, zilch, nada. And yet… it worked — two PP goals on Wednesday, and two PP goals last night (when, in truth, I did not go outside — I’m in a high-rise condo — but I just invoked it for the sake of invoking it).

Weird weird weird.

My roommate grabs a ps3 controller

and does the thumb action in the game they do in a faceoff every time there’s on in the game. Been working well.

As for me they win when I’m drunk, lose when I’m high. So more beer for me.

When I go to games

I always wear my white Hawks cap and my half-and-half jersey over my Seabrook t-shirt. Usually the Hawks win when I’m wearing them. I wore ‘em last night too, just to bring our boys some extra luck, but usually I don’t have any superstitions I follow when I’m watching at home.

The other thing I always do when I go to sporting events is tuck my ticket inside the front of my cap. My cousin started doing it at Sox games, and now my whole family does it for any kind of game we attend.

Mine is a two-parter

The girlie wears her ‘Hawks hoodie she got from Marshall’s (orignially mine, but not it has pooky holes so it’s hers) , glasses on, hair up; I wear my Havlat third jersey t-shirt and have not shaved since the last game of the season. My GF was in Germany during games 3 and 4; she is now not allowed to leave the country until the post season ends (hopefully in June!).
