My personal deity is Mark Calcavecchia … but sadly, he doesn’t give a shit about my prayers. So I’ve diverted them to Dirk Graham, thinking that some of those positive shut-down vibes from the ’92 playoff race might be in order (minus the Cup final, of course).
Guy’s name was Dirk, for fuck sakes, I still love that.
t minus 9 hours and 40 mins
fair warning to all hawks fans……first period will be mostly hawks as the canucks wake from slumber….so dont get to excited,ok?
and some bad news……Mats Sundin this week has looked like the Mats Sundin all us Canuck fans woke up one morning before christmas and screamed “THANKS SANTA!!!!!”
PREDICTION……..nucks 5 and hawks 2 in game 1
Hawks are coming in with that fresh taste of “holy shit, we can win a road playoff game”. might be closer than you think.

No predictions from me on this one.
Obviously we didn’t want to face the Nucks in the first round becuase they are a much tougher matchup. But if Nuck fans think they’re going to steamroll through the Hawks like they did the Blues, be prepared for a rude awakening. Eager will ensure that.
Got more soul than a sock with a hole.
No disrespect intended
You guys have an AWESOME team…..but most young teams have to pay their dues, and luongo will drive that point home
Its gonna be an awesome series
I agree.. it’ll be a good series.. but I’m sick of heard “most young teams have to pay their dues”.
How many dues do they have to pay? One Round? One Year? A cup? I think this point is overrated.
And anyway, the Hawks have three guys with their name engraved on the Cup.. care to tell me how many Canucks have that honor?
When it comes to cumulative games of playoff experience though I think the Canucks have the edge… although I don’t have those numbers…
It's a stupid cliche.
Now, if he had said “Young teams are often stifled, to some extent, in the playoffs due to their inexperience,” then he might be on to something.
But what the fuck does it even mean to “pay their dues?” Is there a requisite amount of playoff experience necessary before success is allowed? (That’s a rhetorical question, because the answer is quite obviously “NO.” and it’s a bullshit, unfounded, cop-out of a suggestion.)
NOW STOP IT RIGHT HERE
the whole young thing
can easily be countered with a “too young to know any better” argument too

I think its valid to a point in the first series.
And then maybe any future game 7’s. Until then, its no excuse until they are in the finals.
Got more soul than a sock with a hole.
I think the age thing is all bs
considering most NHL players have been playing hockey since they could walk.
by runningquicklynowhere on Apr 30, 2009 11:05 AM CDT up reply actions
How old was Patrick Roy when he won his first cup? Or Marty Brodeur? Claude Lemieux? Jaromir Jagr? Peter Forsberg? the 80’s Edmonton Oilers? Age is a factor if you are very old; when it comes to enthusiasm vs. experience you get an equation where both sides cancel out. The real deciding factor is opportunities exploited and talent.
This series is going to be a very tough series to watch on both sides of the puck.
by russellguldin on Apr 30, 2009 12:38 PM CDT up reply actions
I agree
Winning game 1 and 2 didn’t allow any of that to take root though. Then winning a closeout game on the road, for me, removed any doubt about youth being a problem. Nothing left to do now but keep playing solid hockey. Allowing the thought to creep in that they’re promised plenty of future playoff runs now that they’ve “paid their dues” is silly. Ask Dan Marino how all that promise turned out.
by stickhandler on Apr 30, 2009 11:15 AM CDT up reply actions
Yep, agreed. Granted, the Stanley Cup is king, but these guys have been playing huge games all their lives (Kane and Toews, Bolland, etc., in the World Juniors, where the pressure on Canadian players especially is immense … when they’re 18).
I think it has less to do with experience after the first round, as you say, and more to do with gaining composure. And sure, past experience can foster composure, but it’s not the only thing.
Youngsters, yougins, youthful, young, yada, yada, yada
Clearly the favored critique of all opponents, but it’s been this way for a couple of years now. Any Hawks fan can tell you how inspiring it is to see this team learn from each of their mistakes quickly, quietly, and with impressive efficiency. I heard a lifetime of excuses from those Flames fans as to why we weren’t going to make the cut and all I can hope is that the Vancouver crew keeps it rolling. It makes seeing them all summer long after we obligingly surprise the shit outta them so very enjoyable!!!

RE: Paying dues
what i meant is a “young” team has NO IDEA what it takes…..but i admit the hawks WILL be tough to beat
For instance……tonight……the hawks win the faceoff and move in…..constant shots and they score……will the players on the ice and bench think,WOW…..DAMN,that was easy?
in my opinion,if mats sudin plays like he showed during practice this week……bad news for hawks and about frigging time for me in my playoff pool
Aha!
So there’s a playoff pool at stake. It’s all beginning to make sense.
"Call Detroit, tell dem... BULLSHIT!"
Not the game
not the game that I die for out there…PRACTICE?

So if they score an easy goal,
a young, inexperienced team will think, “wow, that was easy”, but an older, experienced team will say “wow, that easy goal was hard, because we have been in the playoffs before and paid our dues”?

If he plays like he did during practice this week, because those practices are exactly like the game will be, that has to be one of the dumbest comments I have ever read on this site
Lets Go Hawks!

I’m pretty sure no one on the Hawks’ bench will be watching the play and surmising that it’s going to be “easy” from any one point in a game to any other. Spot them four goals and they still won’t be thinking that. They’re young, they’re not stupid; I mentioned this to a Flames fan who was arguing the exact same thing last series.
LMAO at "Practice"
yea,i agree,Sundin as been a bust…..BUT….if he cranks it up from this point on…….well,10 million for a cup?
Reply button so-crates.
And having Luongo has nothing to do with Hawk inexperience or Sundin’s amazing practices.

You’d think the guy could score goals too, the way you canuckleheads hail him. We’ve got just a bit of talent between the pipes too y’know. When does this thing get started already?

I heard Havlat scored 7 times in our last practice. I mean, he could score like 30 goals this series if he keeps this up.
Maybe he's a great
Practice player. and shows nothing on the ice.
Reminds me of Brandon Loyd. The man could do anything in practice but game time, Never.
haha!
Well played sir. Well played indeed.
I heard Khabby made 44 saves on NHL ‘09 on Wii, against…wait for it…the Canucks! I heard that’s an excellent predictor as well…video games. Ask the ESPN douches who simulate NFL games via Madden.

What the fuck happened in the last half hour?
I go to eat and lunch and come back to a fucking shitstorm of asinine fucking posts from a ’Nucks fan who fell out of the short bus.
Seriously — and I hate using this word — but is this guy fucking retarded?
“sorry…..we nuck fans do it OUR way lol” in response to people telling him to use the reply button — are you joking? I’d like to believe that the majority of ‘Nucks fans have a modicum of intelligence, and that “the ’Nuck way” isn’t interchangeable with “the wrong way.”
And the “experience” argument is fucking bullshit — that ends right now. Let’s be serious for one goddamn second. You could make that argument for any number of things; not even just sports. Experience does not automatically make you better at something. If that were true, the ‘Hawks would’ve lost all their games this season, based on the single fact that they’re the youngest team in the NHL. As many arguments as you can possibly pull out of your ass, it’s still a fucking hockey game.
The perceived importance of “playoff experience” is a sensationalized myth that mainstream sports media like ESPN continually ejaculates onto the collective face of sports fans.
NOW STOP IT RIGHT HERE
You have hit the nail on the head of why I’m so pissed about this “let’s make friends with Nucks Misconduct” edict.

Silly? I don't think so.
I was already annoyed with you Canadian blowhards even before Dave saved my picture to his computer. If I wanted to read any glowing praise about the Canucks, I would join your site. I came here because I’m a blackhawks fan, and I deserve the right to make idiotic, hate-filled rants about my team’s future opponent without having to hear anything back from their fans. That’s how we do it in America, dammit! America! Fuck Yeah!
Whoa!
I’m Canadian but on your team – ’ssallright, I know who the target is.
"Call Detroit, tell dem... BULLSHIT!"
Well, this guy is the only one so far that doesn't understand the concept.
We’re all sports fans, and the majority of us understand what it means to be a fan — something that transcends team loyalty. I think it’s a great idea, so long as people don’t get carried away with the mentality of “I have to hate the other team’s fans, because they root for the other team!”
If that happens, then we’ll just have pissing matches of who can make the stupider, more offensive post. And believe me, I can fucking win that battle.
NOW STOP IT RIGHT HERE
It seems to me that so far people are more than willing to recite their team’s talking points while ignoring the opposition’s and to keep a good mix of informed discussion and nonsensical ribbing going in these threads.
And to answer your previous point, well you know as well as I do that “we” (being a collection of randos who follow the same blog) have no control over who shows up in your blog…
P.S. did I mention that Toews is a little girl? :-)
The guys on Nucks Misconduct are all pretty good people.. this guy however joined up on our site first to talk shit and then joined over there after I told him to.. he’s not one of them.

A legitimate hockey question for the Nucks fans still paying attention
or to anyone else that can answer. I am curious about Steve Bernier and what kind of player he is or is projected to be. I have a keeper league and I have to grab one more young winger.
Bernier gave us fits all season missing gaping cages ( seemed like one per game at one point). Over the last few months, his confidence, physical play and production have all picked up. I see nowhere but up for this kid.
Oh god.
You’ll quickly learn that using phrases such as “gaping cages” is often times a mistake on this blog…
NOW STOP IT RIGHT HERE
Do you think I should grab him then? No one in the league is talking about him, which makes me both curious and hesitant. Is he a power forward, a finesse guy, a playmaker or a mucker?
by russellguldin on Apr 30, 2009 1:47 PM CDT up reply actions
He was effective in the first round, picked up his physical play and his line looked like an offensive threat at times. As kesrows said, he was frustrating to watch during the season… I guess for some reason I expected more from him offensively. Right now though I consider him a solid 3rd liner.
Thanks for the comments
I think I will pick him up. If anything, once Sundin gets injured and/or just quits on VAN, Bernie’s minutes should go up.
