The Reaper Just Might Be Putting His Shoes On: Hawks 4, Canucks 2- Hawks lead 3-2

SHIFT CHARTS

CORSI

I'm not sure I can write anything better than what GMH put up in the Fanposts (love the Secret Machines reference, seriously underrated band), but I'll do my damndest.  What a night.  I really thought it would take everything the Hawks had to pull that one out, and I was convinced we would see two more home victories before everything would come down to a Game 7.  What it has come down to is a weighing of each team's balls, and the Hawks are winning that battle DECISIVELY.

Down 2-1, in a Game 5, in the opponent's building?  And you barely even blink?  My man-love for this team is bordering on just straight up love.

This was the most solid 60 minutes the Hawks have put up all series, when they absolutely had to have it, just like Game 5 of the first round.  The first period was pretty even, though the Hawks may have just shaded it a bit.  But they were clearly the more physical of the teams, and only had a bad bounce to blame for going in tied at 1.

The tide started to turn in the 2nd, which made it all the more unjust that the Hawks found themselves trailing, and especially so that The Rich, Swedish Doofus was responsible for it.  I'm sure Canuck fans were lining up to sting us for making fun of that guy all series, probably not so much now.  Whatever, until then, he's been a non-factor, and it's our guess that will continue to be the case.  Either way, the Hawks outshot the Nucks 11-5 that period, were faster, hitting harder, and it would have been a cruel world indeed to go in 2-1 down.

Is there any question that Buff has been the best player on the ice this series?  He's clearly got the Canucks off their game, he's become their #1 concern, and he's stil dominating shifts.  We've given him the hardest time this year, but only because we thought this was possible.  Well, I don't know if anyone thought this was possible, but still.  He got his reward, with two goals, including the huge second on the PP that gave the Hawks BIG MO heading into the 3rd.

We said before the series the Hawks PP would be a deciding factor, because Vancouver likes to sit and watch the rain from the box a lot.  The first two PP's, it looked like monkeys humping a football.  The third one looked a litle better, and the fourth one may just define the season.

Before the 3rd, I texted McClure (who's still in a fuckload of trouble with this site, thank you) that it would be an absolute glass-chew.  His response:  "This is the way he wants it.  Well...he gets it."  He's right, this is what we signed on for.  But no one told the Hawks they were supposed to be tight.  They played the same game all night, and honestly, looked like the only team that was going to win.

The fact that Bieksa took the penalty that very well may doom the Canucks season is so wonderful I want to punch myself in the sack.  I'm surprised he didn't hold a press conference in the box while serving it.

Another thing, no one on this site is ever, ever allowed to question Patrick Kane's toughness ever again.  He was the victim of a cheap shot and a high stick that both drew blood, and he's keeps coming.  And it was he who served up the winner on a platter to Fabulous Weapon, who couldn't miss.  And he didn't.

Also, as GMH said, this may have been 51 Phantom's best game as a Hawks, and certainly the most important.  The Canucks kept running him and running him, and he never flinched.

It's not over by a damn sight, but let's put it this way, I'd rather be where we are than where we are.  God, the UC is going to be frothing at the mouth Monday night.  Can't fucking wait.

Also

I may be in a bit of a ticket predicament for game 6… I have 3 extra game six tickets (sec 309) and am just looking to unload them for what I paid… I don’t mean to be a douche and post ticket stuff on here, so delete/cloak this if necessary.

nevermind

apparently ticketliquidators doesn’t require their sellers to actually have the tickets they post, nor do they have a policy protecting buyers in the case that the seller reneges

no

i just didn’t get any tickets and had to wait 2 days to find out. the sellers have all the leverage, they can back out of any sale. one contacted me and told me he could get me tickets for a little bit more (but ultimately the same price because i’d be going through him and he’d waive the 15% commission). i’m sticking with stubhub from now on. if the seller doesn’t come through, they guarantee you tickets at the price you paid.

I couldn’t have put it any better myself. That penalty might’ve been worth 2 crotchshots.

I was at the game last night!

Man, what a show our boys put on! I don’t know how the Nucks fan’s meltdowns played out on TV, but it was crazy. They littered the ice with trash, 3 times. Someone hit Ladd with a bottle. People were getting arrested. I saw at least three fights. The funniest thing is that they weren’t fighting people wearing Hawks sweaters; it was all Nuck on Nuck crime…I thought I was in Detroit, but then I looked around and realized all the women were hot, so that was impossible…

by HawkInExile on May 10, 2009 12:27 PM CDT reply actions

wow

Sounds f’in insane! TV coverage definitely didn’t capture/describe all of that, although I did see some of the ’Hawks players removing trash from their own bench area. Duncan Keith, in particular, had the most amazing “THIS IS SO BENEATH ME” face as he picked up a piece of debris and flung it behind him.

by gmh on May 10, 2009 1:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Nuck on Nuck crime, that’s hilarious!

Comcast definitely seemed to be going out of their way not to show any of the debris shower or other things related to it. Can’t say as I blame them as knowing the media and ESPN, that would be the kind of shit they actually show for their “hockey” coverage. Edzo mentioned it briefly, but they pretty much seemed to be trying to pretend it wasn’t happening.

My goal? World domination.

I met my gal at a Sox game and one year later she bought Sox season tickets. The next year I took her to a couple of Hawks games. This year she bought season tickets one year after not knowing a heck of a lot (she’s not one of those chicks you have to keep explaining stuff to either). I’d like to think I have been a good influence on her :)

Still in shock of how great last night's game was

Great point about Bieksa in the recap, 2 of his dumbass penalties lead to a hawk goal, nice versteeg crosscheck to him after that whistle as well. Also the fact that douchebag Mitchell was on the ice for Kane’s pass to Bolland for the winner makes it that much sweeter. Finish these pricks off tomorrow, ill be at the game in standing room and cannot wait to get down there

Lets Go Hawks!

Player of the game . .

Bieksa.

Thank you sir for your third grade intellegence. And props to VERSTEEG! Puts a two-handed cross to the back of his head and shows some heart. Now if only VERSTEEG could help 88 start acting more like 32 and a lot less like a certain 87.

You know what, the Kid (88) showed toughness last night, you guys need to lay off him. He is what he is, don’t expect him to be a huge psychical presence. What a pass and fake he made last night, play of the game by far. Watch the replay, after getting elbowed real good and high sticked he makes a perfect pass to win the game. Quit ripping the kid, seriously I have heard enough on this site about him to make me wanna puke.

by SLAZZ on May 10, 2009 9:37 PM CDT up reply actions

The reaction on the Canuck fan side of things is truly hilarious.

How many high sticking calls did the refs need to miss in order for the Canuckleheads to think they got a fair shake?

Got more soul than a sock with a hole.

by chrome on May 10, 2009 5:14 PM CDT reply actions

If you think the boys in Nucks Misconduct are bad...

…check out some of the comments made by other Nucks fans at TSN.ca they’re unreal! One in particular dvrm38 basically assumes that the reasoning of the late calls was of Gary Bettman’s doing. To get back at Balsille for his takeover attempt of the Coyotes only to transplant them in southern Ontario. Others are making assumptions that Bettman is making sure he gets a Winter Classic rematch.
Once again when a Canadian team loses in the playoffs the finger-pointing goes directly to Bettman and not were it should lie. Instead they should blame it on the fact that their team(s) management has not assembled group of players good enough to win at this time of year.
It was always bad, but since Darryl Sutter’s rant after the Flames Game 4 loss in the Stanley Cup Finals in 2004 (“they don’t want us here!”) it’s gotten worse which is a shame for most of the true hockey fans that realize they simply got beaten by a better team!!!

by hawks61 on May 10, 2009 5:34 PM CDT up reply actions

That game was awesome!!!

Love how the Hawks once again rose to the occasion in the 3rd period and took control of this game and sending the Canucks to the brink of elimination. Dustin Byfuglien is proving to be a force to be reckoned with and was clearly the best player on both sides last night. Terrific performance! Great to see the PP breakthrough at the most opportune times last night. Just when they precisely needed a big goal the PP delivered and in style with the damage being done by their 2nd unit (Bolland, Kane, and Byfuglien).
As this series has worn on, the Hawks have proven to be a much deeper, stronger, and more talented team than Vancouver with every player contributing at key times. How many teams can boast that their leading goal-scorer can score a total ZERO goals in a best-of-7 series yet still find a way to put their opponent into an elimination game? Not many, in fact NONE!
Great job all around Hawks now finish them off in Game 6!
LET’S GO HAWKS!!!

What I great night

I graduated college, the Hawks won, and I never knew a stripper would do so much for 35 bucks.

The guys need to realize that Buff can receive passes when right in front of the net. He’s been used primarily for screens and deflections. Watch Holmstrom on the Dead Wings, he is a force in front of the net. Buff can get even more valuable and I’m excited. He was my favorite player last year and until a month ago he sucked. I definably see his heavy shot from 50 ft. leading to a rebound goal in Game 6.

"Oh, that's easy. White Sox. I'm not one of these fair-weather fans. You go to Wrigley Field, you have a beer; beautiful people up there. People aren't watching the game. It's not serious. White Sox, that's baseball. South Side." -O'Bama

300-level question

I’ve never been to game where I didn’t sit in the 100- or 200-levels. Most of the affordable tickets for these playoffs appear to be in the 300-level. So a) is the view good from up there? and b) are you crammed in more than you would be down below?
