Did that really happen? Hawks win 7-5 and move on in the playoffs.

Can you really try to recap that game?  It's 4:30 in the morning and I'm going to at least give it some quick thoughts.  As some of you may know, I had to work tonight until well after the game was underway. I was out in Lake Forest, about 45 minutes away from my apartment, until 10:15.

I thought for a second about switching to WGN to listen to the radio but instead blasted Mastodon the entire way home, so fucking worth it.

I was able to get some sleep from about 11:00 to 1:00 when I thought the game would be replaying but it turned out I still had another half hour til the puck drop - probably the least successful attempt at sleep I've ever had.

Somehow though, I did manage to totally avoid any knowledge of the game so I was watching it for the first time.  It's insane to be so nervous and emotionally involved in a game that's already happened knowing that you can't change anything, especially since all of you were probably asleep/passed out already.  I knew that I didn't need to put on the Toews sweater to win the game but I did anyway.  I knew that I couldn't change anything but I still took my dog for a walk during both intermissions.

How many lead changes were there in this game?  5?  Could there have been a bigger roller coaster?  I thought for sure I was going to puke during several occasions.  The third period, exactly what you somehow have come to expect from this team - they're just never out of it in this postseason.  You can't seem to make them give up.

Could anyone imagine that the Hawks would give up 5 goals in this game and still win?  I wouldn't have put money on that - no matter what the odds.

Luongo with a .767 SV%?  He gave up 5 goals the entire series against the Blues - The Hawks put up 2 more on him in this game alone.

You can't even begin to describe how amazing it is for a Hawks fan to see Daydream Nation put up 6 points in this game.  Kane's hat trick?  I was trying to be respectful of my neighbors below me so I didn't yell but I did run up and down my hallway pumping my fist and jumping.  WOW.

What an incredible shot that was on the third and final goal - Seriously, we said it last recap but we're calling for a complete stop to any bitching about his play.  He'll take his hits, he's small so he'll fall but he's getting back up and he's still a threat to score.  A hat trick to clinch the Western Conference Semi-Finals?  What more could you ask from him?

Buff, Seabrook, Brouwer, VERSTEEG!, Campbell.. everyone had an amazing game.  At this point, bring on the Ducks, bring on the Wings, no one knows what will happen but we're going to give them one hell of a fucking series.

LETS GO HAWKS!

Halfway to becoming an asthmatic.

I wonder if “I’m a Blackhawks fan” will be enough to get me an inhaler from my doctor. Good god.

I got an extra inhaler

I have COPD. I’ll trade ya one inhaler for a ticket in the Stanley Cup finals. OMG what a game last nite! I hope The Effing Scumwings play us. Hawks in 6. Too bad we can’t get their filthy scummy team at Wrigley for a rematch. Paybacks are a MOFO

WHAT A GAME

Was fortunate to see it up close and personal last night. I have to say, Luongo looked RATTLED that third period.
He was visibly shaken at one point in the game. The refs (namely Mike Leggo) seemed determined to make this a seven game series by calling most everything in Vancouver’s favor. Yes, we took some dumb penalties, but guy seemed hellbent on leaving his mark on the game. The crowd was ready to lynch this guy by the third period.

Vancouver, though not completely desparate in their play, took so many dives that I lost count. Shit, even Luongo played possum at one point. Sad, really.

One thing that I noticed last night was that Vancouver scored at least three goals off a screen. I don’t think Khabby had a terrible game, its just that his vision was blocked quite a bit.

What is impressive is that the Hawks refuse to give up. The kids continue to play out of their ass. And damn, is it fun to watch. It was a stressful and glorious game to watch. My ears rang for an hour after the game.

One last item — detroit sucks. See you in the finals, bitches.

Where is Nucks in ’09 with his tripe about how bad the crowd is, and how there was no WAY the Hawks would win in Vancouver, let alone another game.

Unbelievable

I still can’t believe we won that game. It was INSANE at the United Center. I’m sure everyone sitting around me hates me because of all the swearing/cheering I did tonight.

My girlfriend actually refers to Sharp as "my boyfriend."

She was in Phoenix in January (the night Walker KO’d Jovanovski) and sat right by the tunnel to the locker room. She claims Sharp winked at her — which is highly contestable. He might’ve looked at her, but a wink? C’mon.

She and her sister were on TV, though. As young females wearing ’Hawks gear at an away game, how could they NOT be on TV?

Nice. Very. I haven’t been able to encourage my girlfriend yet to the level of commitment it takes to buy her own and publicly wear Hawks gear. I’m working on it, though, and the playoff performance this year (and my obsession) have gone a long way toward winning her over from her father’s terrible longtime Habs influence.

Random snippets...
‘’I have never heard a crowd like that at any event,’’ Burish said. ‘’We couldn’t hear the music and couldn’t hear people six feet away. I think that everyone in the building was screaming all night.

‘’The whole series has been a roller-coaster with all the ups and downs. I’ve never been in a venue like that, not even at a heavy-metal concert.’’

via Steve Tucker, Sun Times

Burish is a fuckin’ quote machine. More good ones in that article too.

"The better team always wins a seven-game series," Daniel said. "We can look and say we were unlucky in some games, but it’s not about luck. You get luck. They have three really skilled lines up front and in the end that won them the series."

via Brad Ziemer, Vancouver Sun

Luongo taking it pretty rough:

“This is going to take a lot to get over,” said [Luongo].
“I let in seven goals. You can’t be satisfied with your own performance if you let in seven goals,” he said after facing 30 shots on the night.
“I didn’t help my teammates out,” he repeated, before leaving with a “sorry, guys.”
via Terry Jones, Edmonton Sun

‘’I never would’ve dreamt we could draw a million — never, ever,‘’ [Wirtz] said. ’’My father, grandfather and uncle are all watching. They would be very, very proud. This is all their sweat equity. I’m happy for the fans, and I’m so happy for the players. They’ve worked so hard. They really deserve it.’’

via Stu Courtney, Sun Times

Said Vancouver coach Alain Vigneault: “You’ve got to give them credit. They are one of the best-skilled offensive teams I’ve seen. The people of Chicago are going to have a great team for years to come.”

via Mike G. Morreale, NHL.com

Okay, I’m done.

I woke up and said "Did that really happen?"

Sportsgal you must have been sitting next to the only people in the building that were not screaming like freaks if they were bothered by you because I couldn’t hear anything the last 5 minutes (15 minutes in real time) in that madhouse. I woke up with no voice, no hat, and I turn on WGN to see Pat Tomasulo interviewing Michael Irvin (ex-Dallas Cowboy) and Irvin says how he is a BIG Blackhawks fan and his favorite player is Patrick Kane… did I just slip into some kind of weird Alan Moore vortex… no, this shit really happened!!! Best NHL game I have seen live in the last fifteen years. All the Hawks stepped up this series. Campbell=Huge. Hatrick Kane. I will be rooting for the ambulance driver for the next 2 games in the PinkWings-Mighty *ucks of Analheim series.

The 300 Level was berzerk last night

Positively berzerk. Getting behind twice in that period merely amped up the explosion once we took the lead for good.

The very, very good news is that the Hawks get a few days off. With that time, Duncan Keith is going to sit in a corner and think about what he has done. Lost in the shuffle is the fact that this guy has to play better. Has to. We need all three pairings to be extra sharp in the next series, because, well, we can’t keep coming from behind like this. You take a look at the trailing-after-two / leading-after-two percentages, historically, and you tell me if we can afford to get behind in any of these games. We’ve cheated death too many times without getting burned for it.

Naturally, the opposition is going to score goals. Khabby is khuman, after all. We gotta keep the giveaways in our own end to a bare minimum and not get caught so much.

All stuff for the end of the week, of course. Right now is pretty freaking sweet.

WAIT FOR THE WHISTLE!

Maybe, but we still have a long way to go. I met an older guy this morning downtown for my job. He tours me around one of the downtown buildings, and I check on my equipment. This team has a new name and a special place

in my heart.

“RELENTLESS”, I name them, for refusing to quit or give up or give in. They had a two goal lead and were completely stifling the Canucks (a very solid team), holding them without even a shot on goal. By the third period, there was practically no momentum left in their corner.

And yet, even down by a goal twice, and hanging by a thread, they refused to let these problems be their downfall.

The best part is: to see such an amazingly gifted and skilled group of players fight so hard and put so much effort is so thoroughly refreshing. I think a great deal of credit for this goes to Joel Quenneville. While I was upset when Savvy was let go, I think everyone in existence knows now that it was the right move to bring Quenneville in.

I’m so psyched.

Word to the wise

Comcast has been putting the games On Demand if you go to the Get Local section, then Comcast Sportsnet.

I know that’s what I’ll be doing tonight.

You have no idea how awesome it is to follow up a game like that with a daylong ISO audit prep the next day. It’s like going from Heaven straight to Hell, with only a brief nap in between.

well, iguess the best team won the series ,and the n.hl. can pat them self’s on the back they are half way to setting the stage just the way they want it ,chi.-anhiem or det. semi final , and a pit.- bos or carl. semi final . it was so obvious in last nights game that they were not going to allow the canucks to win it was pathtic and if you could not see it then you are not ahockey fan every time the canucks tide the score they were given apenalty and at least 2 were very questionable bitween the bad calls on the canucks and the non-calls on the hawks there was 12 minutes of short-handed time the canucks werecheated out of f. so if this sounds like sour grapes IT IS ,SO ENJOY YOUR HOLLOW VICTORY GO CANUCKS GO ., PS PATRICK KANE STICKING YOUR TOUNGE OUT AT YOUR OPPOSTION IS FOR 5 YEAR OLDS ,BUT ONLY AN AMERICAN WITH IMMATURITY AND LACK OF RESPECT WOULD DO SUCH ATHING BUT DON’T WORRY WHEN AND IF YOU LOSE IN THE NEXT ROUND THE CANADIAN PLAYERS SHAKING YOUR HAND WILL ONLY SAY GOOD GAME PAT ,——BUT DURING THE GAMES DURING THE SERIES DON’T BE SURPRISE IF YOU GET A FEW TEETH KNOCKED OUT AND SOMEBODY SKATING BY SAYING THAT IS FOR DIS REPECTING THE GAME YOU PUNK!

Well done.

I actually had to look it up to remember what the song actually was. I haven’t listened to J5 since college, but that lyric will always stay with me.

And anything that comes out of MF Doom’s mouf.

My favorite part:
every time the canucks tide the score they were given apenalty

Tide the score? Amazing

And for the record – the Canucks only “tide” the score once…

Uh oh

Did baby make a boom boom?

So you signed up here today just to rant like an idiot. I bet you thought it was cool when the classy fans littered the ice on Saturday also, eh?

My goal? World domination.

huh?

I’m not sure when Kaner stuck his tongue out, but that is besides the point.

But blaming the loss on the nhl? Now that’s mature.

And if you want to call penalties bullshit, take a look at some the penalties called on the hawks during game 6. Complete bullshit.

I thoroughly enjoyed your post though, especially the lack of capitals to begin sentences – made it even more coherent. And I’ll also give you the benefit of the doubt that your keyboard was sticky causing your caps lock key to stick near the end.

See you next season asshole.

He's probably thinking he saw a tongue but it was

Kane’s mouthguard he always has hanging out of his mouth sideways if he’s not actually in the play. SO no he wasn’t sticking his tongue out

Thanks for the link, I really needed that.

The photos are great

Seabrook knocking Burrows on his butt and the Penguins player taking a header into the ice.

Getting back to hockey -

While Toews and Kane were awesome last night, how about some kudos for Brouwer. He spends most of the series on the fourth line and doles out hits like there is no tomorrow. Then he gets moved up to the Toews/Kane line, they score five goals and Brouwer ends up +3.

Been A Long Time

I’m still in a euphoric state after the game. I have been a Hawk fan since the late ’60s, seen great players come and go. This group of guys are the BEST team the Hawks have put on the ice since the time of Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita & Glenn Hal. The Stanley Cup is theirs for the taking. Just wish I was closer to Chi-town so I could go to the games again.
We have the best chance of winning since the ’92 playoffs. All you great Hawk fans, keep up the great support for OUR team & have a beer at the game for me! GO HAWKS!!

Congratulations

The young guns on your team looked very impressive in this series, should make for a very good conference finals. Youth vs. Experience. Either way the West wins the cup in 6. GO RED WINGS!!!!!!!!

Oh by the way, when i said “west” I meant to say “DETROIT RED WINGS”
Sorry For The Misunderstanding…..GO RED WINGS!!!!!!!!!

This team is blowing my mind!!!

Not for one second did I ever think at the start of the season the Hawks would find themselves in this position yet here they are. I always dreamed that one day the Hawks would eventually find themselves back into this position but never this quickly! So much for no experience in the playoffs?
The lean years were tough but that is the past the future lookd even brighter and with every playoff win that shine gets even brighter. For with only 8 wins left I can not only feel it, taste it, but see it…the Cup!
This has been one magical run that hopefully ends with the moment we all have been waiting for.
LET’S GO HAWKS!!!

Third Youngest player In NHL History to get a hat trick

Behind Wayne Gretzky, who scored two in the 82 playoffs. And some other guy that did it in 1945. Pretty amazing stat if you ask me. Enough of the Kane bashing, he is leading the team in goals, exactly what he gets paid to do.
