SI shows no love for Rocky

SI put out their best and worst owners today - it's all over the place so if you read any other blogs you've probably seen it.  But here's my question - What the hell else does Rocky Wirtz have to do to get on this list?

NHL
Five Best Owners
1          Mike Ilitch                                             Detroit Red Wings
2          Jeffrey Vanderbeek                                New Jersey Devils
3          Mario Lemieux/Ron Burkle                   Pittsburgh Penguins
4          San Jose Sports and Entertainment        San Jose Sharks
5          Peter Karmanos                                      Carolina Hurricanes

Here is how they say they judged the owners:

Among the criteria used to evaluate owners was the willingness to spend money to improve the team; the stability and capabilities of the front office and management; the amenities at the team's venue; and the club's culture and interactivity with fans. Of course, weighing heavily in the decision was the team's success or failure on the field.

Hmmm..

  • From 3,500 season ticket holders to a (supposed) 3,000 person waiting list
  • All games on TV for the first time ever
  • Campbell/Huet (I know, I know but at least they're spending)
  • The Winter Classic
  • Mobbed by fans every chance they get
  • Oh and a little thing called the Western Conference Finals

So they're probably looking at long term success which obviously isn't fair to Rocky since he's only been in charge for two years but the results are there.  Good thing these kind of polls are meaningless though...

I would pay it no mind

As Wysh pointed out, this poll is immediately irrelevant since the TB ownership doesn’t crack the bottom 5, but Nashville does because “it’s not a hockey town”.

More retarded tripe from reporters and writers who have the hockey knowledge of the SHOOOOOOOOT IT guy.

My goal? World domination.

Don't think so

I think it depends on whether the Scum close out the series tonight or they go to game 7. I’m just hoping they beat the living shit out of each other.

What a load of BS

Even my girlfriend knew about Rocky and what he’s done for the Hawks even though she’s not a sports fan at all. She actually told me stuff I didn’t even know. I think that’s impressive.

If I can't be a good example, I'll just be a horrible warning

Screw it

Ilitch can carry the Best Owner Cup around. Rocky will take Lord Stanley’s.

THIS

is absolutely true.

has the other shoe hit the floor yet?

I don't mind

and I am sure Rocky doesn’t either.

When Rocky was shown on the jumbotron last night, the UC erupted in THUNDEROUS applause. I think that makes him sleep well at night (on his pillows stuffed with ca$h).

HEY — as a side note, I will be trolling “Winging it in Motown” tonight to start stirring the pot a little. WHO’S WITH ME?

Well, they ranked "The Rooney Family"

So maybe they’re considering “The Wirtz family” as well.

But that also doesn’t make any sense, because then they’d be in the bottom 5.

Somebody should make a comic called "Tulowitzki the Combat Shortstop". I'd read it.

FYI

Kane will be having a live interview on Vs during the first intermission of the Wings/Ducks game.

that's what she said

by Sportsgal on May 12, 2009 8:57 PM CDT reply actions

Pretty bland interview

they basically asked him every question he was asked yesterday.

But its VS, what can you expect?

Anaheim and Detroit can merge into one team

and we will still beat them in 6.

Some of them aren't bad.

and, honestly, they could be a lot worse off

I think that the mere fact that the Hawks weren’t in the bottom 5 is more than enough testament to what Rocky’s accomplished.

Field Hockey Team Owners?
…success or failure on the field.

Well, that explains it: maybe a review of ice hockey team owners would give Rocky the credit he deserves.

Sports Illustrated might have just blown the cover on the new rule change for next year.

I'm sorry...

But the title for this thread should have been:

SI shows no intelligence.

Who do they think they are, ESPN? Honestly, if you look at the “Best and Worst” of the other sports, you’ll find how complacent SI was in actually looking for new ideas.

Short Memory?

How quick they forget Lemieux was willing to sell and/or his beloved Pens less than 3 years ago.
