The first thing I know to root for is about 7 OT's tonight.  Past that, I suppose it's your personal preference.  I think Sassone put it best, "Hawks fans would rather play the Ducks, but they'd rather beat the Wings."

For me, I really can't decide, I'm terrified of both teams.  The Ducks are equipped with a goalie playing out of his mind who gives the Hawks fits anyway, and have the best line in hockey that can't be totally stopped.  Also, their blue line is strong 1-6.

Scum, however....well, Scum.

For tonight, I have a sneaking suspiscion that Hiller steals it, and the insistence that Osgood is good enough comes back to bite Scum tonight.  But we shall see, anything can happen and all that bullshit.  Anyway, here's your thread, have at it.

The only thing that scares me more about the Ducks, than the Wings…is that this (Ducks) look to be that team that is “built for the playoffs.” They also play a “trapish” type of game, that they will NOT abandon, like the Canucks did.

But how sweet would it be to beat the Wings for a trip to the SC Finals.

Either way, I hope the Wings lose at some point…tonight is as good a time as any. Especially since I have some co-workers who have been predicting for a couple of days now that it’s a foregone conclusion that they will win their series against the Ducks. Would love to see that “shut them up” look on their faces tomorrow morning

Also with my 3:30 AM wakeup call for work everyday, the Wings games might have some better road start times. Right?

I thought for sure I had read somewhere that they donate the hats. Maybe it was another team. Kind of sucks if they just toss them.

So....

How many hats do you think one could claim that he/she lost in a given night?

wait what?

by pepe126 on May 14, 2009 3:49 PM CDT up reply actions

probably a few

depending on how you play it. I doubt you’d be able to get more than one or two hats if you’re going in there by yourself. But, if you went back there a few times throughout the game and go to a different person each time, you could probably get a good handful. Although I don’t really understand why you’d want to take someone else’s hat. That’s kinda gross.

that's what she said

Ducks seem to be in the mold of the teams the Hawks already beat. One really strong scoring line, good defense, good goaltending. Knowing that we’ve already played similar teams and prevailed gives me a higher degree of confidence if it’s Anaheim.
But then there’s the epic Conference Finals matchup. Detroit plays a speed game and if nothing else, the games should be entertaining as hell to watch. Plus, if they could get to Luongo, rattling Osgood should be an order of magnitude easier.
I think I’m happy either way. An O6 matchup is probably better for the league.

My goal? World domination.

Why I don't want to face the Ducks

1. Jonas Hiller – He’s the best goalie in Western Conference
2. Their defense – one of the stingiest in the league. Pronger aka Cock Sucker towers over everyone and plays dirty in his zone (God I hate him). Their veterans will be tough to beat.
3. The Getzlaf line – even if they don’t score, they’re going to beat the crap out Seabrook and Keith
4. Height advantage – these guys TOWER over our guys. They’re going to make life hell for Khabby in front of the net.
5. They are going to be incredibly physical… more than any team we’ve faced.

This might be sacriledge on here, but let's just imagine

for a brief second this surging hawks team doesn’t prevail, for once in my life, I actually wouldn’t mind if Detroit goes on.

That town and that state has born the brunt of our countries economic difficulties right now, and even though Chicago has and will always be worlds better than Detroit, they are still our midwestern cousin. Since, as was said by someone else on here, we are playing with house money at this point, I’d rather see us really renew the Detroit rivalry.

That and I fucking hate everything about Southern California. The people, the ‘cities’, the fact the team is based off a fucking Disney movie. Detroit may be full of mullets, methheads, and Eminem’s mom, but at least its a hockey town. Fuck Disney.

Oddly, the Penguins are the only Pitt sports team I feel this way about. The Steelers and Pirates don’t bother me at all. Not that the Pirates have bothered anyone for awhile.

Just hate the Penguins

I don’t mind the Steelers. Mostly it’s just the fans of the Pittsburgh teams I can’t stand. There are quite a few Pittsburgh fans here in the city and they’re all ridiculously obnoxious. Not to mention the league has shoved Crosby and Malkin down our throats because they think these two guys are the only ones that can attract fans. And I really despise how Crosby cries and whines over every single call. Just shut the fuck up and play hockey, you giant pussy.

yeah

I don’t see how the crumbling auto industry in MI is much different than the nearly 20 year crumbling steel industry in the Tri-State Pittsburgh area. I’m surprised that anyone dislikes Wings fans less than Pens fans. At least in Pittsburgh the leaches aren’t chanting Ossy, Ossy, Ossy when he isn’t even involved in a play of consequence…not to mention the octopus tossing and having to look at Babcock’s perma-bitter beer stone face and feathered hair.

by Crease Monkey on May 14, 2009 9:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Why I don't want to face the Wings

1. Their offense – best in the league (yes, even better than fucking Pittsburgh). They’re going to pepper Khabby with shots. You guys all saw Khabby last series. He wasn’t at his best, and facing 30+ SOG a game scares the crap out of me.
2. Their goal screeners – again, best in the league. I saw what happens when someone gets in Khabby’s face. Not good.
3. Their power play – if the Blackhawks take ANY stupid penalties, a definite possibility in this match-up, it’s more than likely they Wings will capitalize on the man advantage.
4. puck possession – Detroit can control the puck for long stretches of time and rarely dump the puck in the zone. I’m not sure if the Blackhawks can muster up enough defensively to cause turnovers.

that's what she said

by Sportsgal on May 14, 2009 3:52 PM CDT reply actions

#2 especially

god was that frightening. Khabby wasn’t even close to stopping shots with someone in front of him. That could be really ugly

by ChargingMajor on May 14, 2009 4:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Excellent points all around

Especially the power play. The Wing PP is sick. And the Hawks have been known to take their share of dumb penalties. Since we’re not allowed to bash him anymore more I won’t say his name, but Gretzky minus 11 seems to be a big culprit of this.

Both teams are puck possession, but the Wings excel at it and are really the ones that made the style work and finally busted the trap.

The over/under on these games would have to be in the 6-7 range. That’s just crazy for playoff hockey.

My goal? World domination.

I think because of Niedermayer's elbow

The Wings will thrash them tonight. Think it was a dumb move for them to piss off the Red Wings. Plus they’ll be at home and the crowd Should be into it.

by Roos-34 on May 14, 2009 4:29 PM CDT reply actions

I vote ducks

2 reasons:

1) Hawks are 5-1 at home in the playoffs, and 3-3 on the road. The road record is respectable, but still, give me home ice if I can get it.

2) The hawks have shown no fear in these playoffs, they have shown no signs of youth negatively impacting them, but IF the hawks were to play Detroit, I could see them start to feel pressure. They are familiar with Detroit, they know what the rivalry is and this could hurt them. The ducks are just another non-division team, like Calgary and Vancouver, and the young players would have the same mentality against the ducks, which is a plus in my opinion.

That being said, I think the hawks can beat detroit.

Interesting fact that I’m sure many of you already know, but………If carolina wins tonight, the HAWKS would have home ice if they make it to the SC finals, pretty (hypothetically) sweet eh!?

on that note

I haven’t seen pahlsson’s face in a few games, but I swear I saw him late in the calgary series CLEAN-SHAVEN! If he does shave, that it is infinitely gay. Can I get some verification on the pahlsson beard?

On an unrelated note, pahlsson lost some big faceoffs in game 6, Im not sure what his numbers are, but lately he has seemed underwhelming in the circle…..thoughts?

by Hack on May 14, 2009 5:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Don't know if he shaves or is just lacking in facial follicles

Pahlsson was baby-faced throughout the Ducks’ 2007 cup run, too, and it didn’t have much of an effect on his game then. He had a sub-par game six in the faceoff circle, but he’s been pretty good so far, plus we won that game, so I won’t complain!

I've seen stubble

He’s a fair haired guy from Sweden. His facial hair is very blond.

that's what she said

by Sportsgal on May 14, 2009 5:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Pahlsson

Currently Pahlsson is ranked 28th (among playoff participants in faceoff % (49.3%). In comparison, our 21 year old captain is ranked second at 61.1%, and is ranked first among remaining playoff participants.

I know they won game 6, I have been a pahlsson apologist since they got him (from crazed wiz loving hawk fans like my old man), BUT the faceoff that stands out in my mind is the one he lost in the third period on the penalty kill, and right after he lost it (and lost it hard I might add), D. sedin scored seconds later. Luckily, his teammates bailed him out in the end, but at the time I was ragging pissed because it seemed like a huge goal.

If we play detroit, others have already mentioned how deadly their PP is, we need faceoff wins from this guy on the PK. I generally like him on the PK, but he needs to get it going quickly, this is one big reason he is here in the first place.

by Hack on May 14, 2009 6:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Detroit’s PP is great, but so is Anaheim’s … and Detroit’s PK has only been mediocre.

if he is shaving, it would suck that he isn’t participating in the playoff beard with his teammates.

On that note, are any other hawk players not growing playoff beards?

I personally think that going into the playoffs Vancouver was the team to beat...we beat them.

That being said were 2-2-2 against Detroit this season, and other then the loss before the classic, and the classic, the other two losses were coinflips. The classic is a tough one to judge just because of all the outlying factors…but i guess thats the same as playoffs, no excuses. Anaheim just scares me because of Hiller and their first line. I know scum are defending champs and all (who has to be reminded) but I feel like going into the next round no matter who we play, we will be the team to beat.

is it just me

or has Pronger been off tonight? Not shooting from the point on 5-on-3s, mishandling the puck a few crucial times, etc.

He also just

almost killed his goalie

To me

That just means he’s “on”

by Option27 on May 14, 2009 7:42 PM CDT up reply actions

oh man

what a play by Datsyuk. 3-1 Wings just as the Ducks made it a game again.

The Red Wings color guy is like the Ron Santo of hockey

“Wow.”
“Oh jeeze.”

Shoot.

I leave work with the Wings up 2-0, and then it all goes pear shaped.

My goal… is to watch the Ducks and Wings beat themselves up over the next four hours.

Good lord

S. Niedermeyer looks OLD. And, also: reeeejected. (No play for etc.)

Ruh-roh.

The Ducks tie it up.

Mutually assured destruction. Good enough for the Cold War, good enough now. DO IT.

That new Lions logo is worth at least one win next year. Very intimidating……

keep changing the subject, I like it. Wings will sweep Chi town.

by BIGWalt2990 on May 14, 2009 10:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Broadly speaking, that's a just result

The top two teams from the top division in the league face off for a trip to the Finals.

Well — we (by and large) asked for it. We got it.

Be careful what you wish for

This is going to be huge. Hockey might actually make the first half hour of Sportscenter for once!
Game’s the same as last round. Get the split there and bring it home!

My goal? World domination.

Any mention of a time? I assume afternoon which blows because I’m supposed to go to the Cubs game.

My goal? World domination.

Shit

I’ll have to convince Hubby to celebrate our anniversary on Sat. (If he even remembers).

If I can't be a good example, I'll just be a horrible warning

2pm (CT) per NBC Sports website

So you are not going to the Cubs game, then.

Well

I think it starts at 1:20. So I can put in an appearance and head someplace about the 2nd inning or so where I can watch the Hawks. I’m not even a Cub fan so I really couldn’t care less about that game, but my wife is. This will be a good test to see if she is truly converted and committed to the Indian!

My goal? World domination.

Idea

Can we switch spouses for the afternoon? Not anything kinky, just a short “sports trade.”

If I can't be a good example, I'll just be a horrible warning

Chicago seafood sellers beware...

Maybe they’ll start checking ID like they did last year with Pittsburgh

Excuse me

[runs to seafood store, coughs on octopi]

Next week, you’ll be hearing about the Octopus Flu. It will be a public health emergency. Apologies in advance.

[BTW: Bruins tied it up just now.]

Speaking on behalf of Wings fans...

…there’s still, like, plenty of good seats in the 100-level right? It’s a shame you haven’t been able to watch any of the home games or anything, and chasing off Pat Foley, well, it’s not like Tony Esposito or Bobby Hull are going to show up or anything. I mean, we should be able to pack a good 9,000 Wings fans into the UC…oh, excuse me, someone’s handing something to me…

::quickly reading::

Um…good luck. :)

HURRICANES!

Get the fuck out, Boston. Just get. the. fuck. out.

Somebody should make a comic called "Tulowitzki the Combat Shortstop". I'd read it.

That was pretty intense.

I hope Brind’Amour will be okay after taking that puck to the face.
