Love Is A Long, Long Road: Hawks 2, Scum 5 (Scum lead 1-0)

Shift Charts

Corsi

Every bit as torturous as we thought it would be.  And now an afternoon ruined.  But, keep repeating the following: "Long way to go, long way to go."  And there is, and the room between the Hawks play today and their ceiling is cavernous, though they're going to have to close that up sharpish.

Frustrating thing is, the 1st period looked exactly like we wanted to see it, especially the first 10 minutes.  VERSTEEG! rang one off the post, and the Wings d-men were turning pucks over left and right.  The Hawks were clearly the more physical team as well, and when Campbell dropped Valteri McFagfag, I nearly had an erection.  They were rewarded when the wings d and Osgood decided to rehearse a performance art piece instead of play the puck, and Burish poked it home for a dream start.

Then a sucker punch, off a draw the Hawks won.  Seabrook had the puck bounce over his stick (more on that later), but Keith kept Boozy Cleary to the outside.  Unforutnately, he still beat Khabby.  Helluva shot, but Khabby's got to have that.  Still, the 1st was just shaded by the Hawks, or at least dead even, and 1-1 seemed right, maybe even a little unlucky.

Then, apparently, someone broke in the Hawks dressing room and informed them they were now the '85 Oilers, and could do as they pleased in the neutral zone.  DEATH.  You can't do that against this team.  Just because they're not playing a trap doesn't mean they don't work their ass off backchecking, and if it's not there you HAVE to get pucks in deep and go get them.  Especially considering how giving the Wings were in the first when being forechecked, and especially considering that the ice at the Joe looked like a cubist representation of anarchy.  Simple simple simple, and the Hawks failure to be so led to the game being turned on them.

I know NBC is contractually obligated to make everything seem like a great play by someone on Scum, but Franzen's goal is simply a misplay by Keith.  He's got to be stronger than that.  All that being said, Khabby single-handedly kept the Hawks in it with some unbelievable play, and we'll need more of it.

2-1 flattered the Hawks, but they were right where they wanted to be after cashing in on their only PP, and power play that looked awful up until then.  After VERSTEEG! converted a tap-in, I'm sure I wasn't the only one who though this is where the Hawks would go.  Nope, more of the same.  Lazy, bad play.  Refusal to do the simple thing.  Missed clearances, missed passes, poor decisions.  Every one of those mistakes will lead to Scum making you pay, and they did so.

A long way to go.  The Hawks have to up their game seriously, but if Khabby maintains that level and the rest of his mates come to meet it, we still have every chance.

Random thoughts:

-Thank the fucking lord that there's only one more game on NBC this series, and i'll be at the UC for it, so I don't have to listen to it.  I swear to God, if I have to listen to Pierre Fucking McGuire talking with Wings jizz spilling out over his lips, I'm going to open the vein on my left wrist and drink my own blood before the reaper comes.

-Maybe I haven't seen enough games at the Joe, but again, I don't remember the ice being that bad.  That's not why the Hawks lost, both teams have to play on it, but it makes their refusal to play a simple game all the more infuriating.

-Datsyuk looks hurt.  He had an effective game, but not a dominating one, and I've probably just woke him up.  But he looks a step slower than normal.

-It's an NBA rule when playing the champs, you're not going to get any calls, but it appears to be drifting to the NHL.  Again, not why the Hawks lost, but Holmstrom got away with an absolute spear on Biscuit, and Henrik Catalano got away with a hold before Franzen's goal.  Somehow, I doubt we'll be only getting one power play a game.

-I was just perusing the Thread, and I'd really prefer if this site doesn't turn into a "You suck" "No you suck" "Get bent" meathead-athon if we can help it.  I'm sure there are a few Scum fans hiding in there who just want to piss people off, but the ones who have been posting regularly here, like ahtrap I believe, seem to be rather literate and intelligent, and we don't really need all the back-and-forth.  Somehow, though, I think that will remain my wish.

I think this is the best possible visual to describe the worst possible deflation job by the good guys.

It was infuriating to me that the first THREE goals of the game were unassisted and directly off turnovers, just on a matter of principle. (Also infuriating: The scum got two of them, when we only got one.)

Khabby had a great game punctuated by milliseconds of a really bad game. Does that make sense? Like, he made the really awesome saves most of the time, but not the easy ones that came seldomly. I hate that shit.

On a completely unrelated note: I love the fact that Detroit = scum, if only because in my mind, that’s a very soccer term, and if there’s one thing I love as much as hockey, it’s soccer.

Chicago Black Frauds

Whata whiner, the black jokes were out played big time. If it wasn’t for the wall it would have been 8-2 no prob. Not to worry though shitcago fans, the hawks will be decent in about three years when they can grow a beard (and their balls drop)

SCUM - Gotta Love it - now that's RESPECT!

Your title alone will attract a couple of hundred wings fans to respond. Note that many are in Chicago. In any case, all Wings fans LOVE the fact that the HAWKS are back in the hunt. Too many Nashville and Columbus games over the years have made us forget the fun we use to have. The Classic was fun and it was great to see the Hawks overcome the Canucks. So this is a pleasure ….

Wings is Six – only because Scotty MIGHT get you one ….

Are you just not going to account for the other Hawks win that you’re predicting or are you saying they’ll earn it?

You and I are gonna live forever

by Original Six on May 17, 2009 7:39 PM CDT up reply actions

I personally like the way the Hawks are developing – 2 young studs and an up-and-coming supporting cast – and better yet, Front Office Leadership. They are FUN to watch. The thing about the Wings is their supporting cast is VERY deep and experienced – with youth. Playoffs are, in the end, who “grinds” best and they have learned THAT – if nothing else. So, I expect the Hawks to take 1 or 2 games at the UC just based on energy and wanting it more – the Wings do get passive at times and their defense can be erratic. The comment about Scotty is that no one knows better than he how to adjust and matchup lines during a series. I think he can help make this a 6 game series, and who knows, maybe 7, just by knowing the Wings systems and how to counter it. Plus Quenneville has lost every which way to the Wings over the years and must be good for a couple of tricks up his sleeve as well – one would hope. The bottom-line is, there is a ton of talent and experience for the Hawks to overcome. We’ll know better after Game 2 …..

what a waste..

as bad as NBC’s cronies are at least you got to see the game. I had a grad party to go to today but had the DVR loaded up to go…only to find out later that our NBC affiliate here in South Bend covered the Obama commencement speech at ND for about 60% of the game so I only got to see about half of the second period and about 14 minutes of the 3rd…half of which was only on split screen. In the end I guess i didn’t miss much but I would have liked to see the strong first period.

Looking forward to Game 2

I agree with the commentary on Pierre McGuire. He was talking right before the first Hawks goal, and he tends to talk way too much. 2 analysts for hockey doesn’t work, and McGuire’s babble comes at the expense of Olcyzk, who actually provides some insight…

Hawks need to play an better overall game, defense fell apart after the game was tied 2-2.

And what’s with all the empty seats at the Joe? They say ‘sellout,’ but c’mon, no way the UC has that many empties for the home games in Chicago.

by Legendary on May 17, 2009 6:51 PM CDT reply actions

Empty seats were because 1 there were four major events going on downtown (Wings, Tigers, Hoedown, Flower Day) and traffic was awful and 2 the game was over.

Sox Cubs

Can we please not get into cubs sox arguements started by subtly biting comments like your last one. I don’t know if you’ve noticed but 99% of the material on this site is HAWKS related, can’t we keep it that way, or even make it 100%. This is what people in chicago need to realize:

That same guy you that you sit next to at the hawks game and inteligently discuss bad neutral zone play or Huet’s lack of rebound control, is the same guy you think is a moron because he cheers for the other baseball team.

That same guy that you talk with for 45 minutes about the pros and cons of the Cutler deal, is the same guy that you would think has no business discussing baseball since he loves the team on the other side of town.

That dude in the bar that shares your amazement with Joakim Noah’s recent development, is the same damn guy you think is an idiotic homer because he loves or hates Pierzynski.

I am not saying that the Cubs and Sox fans should get along when it comes to baseball, and I’m not saying that everything should be peachy and that we should all hold hands at a Cubs Sox game, I’m saying that there is a time and place for Sox Cubs discussion, AND THIS IS NOT IT!!!! I think most of us agree that it is nice once and a while to talk about 3 of the 4 sports with someone and just not know or care which baseball team they root for.

There are so many things wrong with your last statement, but I’m not going to get into it because this is secondcityHOCKEY.com, figure it out.

Those who laugh last...

…laugh best! Just like many Nucks fans after a Game 1 victory (which your suppose to win) at home these Wings fans come out in droves. Why now? Scared before the series? That’s what it is a series and you’ve only won 1 game that’s all! So stop the cocky comments because if you remember that 3 out 4 teams that won Game 1 in the 2nd round LOST their series so don’t put too much stock in this win!
As for the game, the Hawks didn’t simplfy their game enough and tried too many ‘hope’ plays in the neutral zone but I definitely liked out start and getting the first goal was big eventhough it didn’t translate into a W.
Khabibulin was much better than in Game 6 and kept the Hawks into the game for most of it but needs to stay upright a little more cause the Wings are shooting high every shot. Toews and Kane? Not enough ice-time to become threats which points to too much emphasis on line match-ups by coach Q. Our best players needs the ice-time to be our best players but spitting Daydream Nation may be an option heading into Game 2.
Overall not a bad effort it was there for the taking 2-2 with 15 minutes left in the 3rd so can’t be too dissapointed, but a loss is a loss by any which name you use it-especially to the Wings!
LET’S GO HAWKS!!! WIN GAME 2 AND SHUT THESE TROLLS UP!!!

I think the fact that Calgary and Vancouver

played a pretty similar style served as a bit of a disadvantage prepping the Hawks for this series. Detroit is faster and much more active with their sticks, and after playing 12 games where the Hawks strengths were their opponents weaknesses, that’s no longer the case.

It wasn’t a very smart game, yet they were still in it until midway in the third. Remember, momentum means nothing with this Hawks team. Obviously Detroit is a much more challenging opponent than Calgary or Vancouver, but if the Hawks play at the level they did last series, they absolutely have a chance. It’s going to require a more intelligent level of play though.

It’s important for the Hawks to play physical, but way too many times today, our guys put themselves out of position lunging for a hit that the Wings player simply sidestepped. Take note. Give the hit when its there, but only when its there. The Wings move the puck too well to give them that extra space.

Neutral zone. I think this was our worry going in, and today showed why it was justified. I don’t know why this team has such a difficult time dumping and crashing, but if we continue turning the puck over so often in the neutral zone, we will not be winning. Get the motherfucking puck in deep.

It’s only one game though. Let’s get those unemployed bastards on Tuesday.

Got more soul than a sock with a hole.

by chrome on May 17, 2009 9:00 PM CDT reply actions

Well said...

…and we can all hope the Hawks will learn a few things from today’s game.

The good news is, they played a very inconsistant game and were tied 2-2 midway through the 3rd. Also, I am not sure the Wings can play a heck of a lot better than they did today – their positioning was exceptional all game long and they had a lot of energy coming off a long series. If the Hawks can extend this series, the 7 grueling games the Wings just went with Anaheim, may begin to take it’s toll as the games go on.

That first goal by Cleary was a big let down, as Khabi needs to make the save on that shot. He went down way to early and that gave the Wings life when the Hawks had things their way up to that point. I expect a better performance on Tuesday and a good chance the Hawks are coming home 1-1.

Please Stop

I’m sorry, but it really bothers me when fans of other teams use the economic downturn as an attack on the Wings or their fans. First of all, the economic situation has nothing to do with how well or poorly the Wings may play on a certain night. Second, it’s a very horrible situation that no one fully understands unless they come to Michigan. I know a ton of people, and am one myself, that are unemployed and barely making it. I see people in suburb areas of Grand Rapids (the side of Michigan that is doing better) homeless and begging. This is funny to you? I think it is incredibly sad. So it really upsets me when people use that like it doesn’t matter, like it’s just another way to make fun of Detroit and their sports teams. So, setting sports aside, and just coming as a human being, just like you, I’m asking for this to stop.

I feel bad/drained/sad enough when I check out Huffpo or other sites. I come here to get away from that.

I'm not whining.

It was a simple request. I know it’s bad everywhere, but anyone with half a brain knows it’s worse in Michigan. Don’t tell me crap like I have it better than people in other countries. I don’t need to be told that. I’ve been there. Spent five years in Africa, so don’t give me that crap. I’m grateful because I know that I am blessed.
Have fun, I don’t care. Insult the Wings, their fans, their families. It’s your right as a sports fan. Make fun of Detroit even. Make fun of me. I don’t give a crap. But when thousands of people start losing their jobs and businesses in Illinois because of the problems of the auto industry, maybe you might start to agree that it’s not laughing matter.
You don’t wanna stop? Fine. Just proves what we know. You can’t attack the Wings, because they’re leagues ahead of anywhere the Hawks ever have been or will be. So you attack anything else.

by girl from michigan on May 18, 2009 4:54 PM CDT up reply actions

All this comes from the 'unemployed bastards' line?

Relax. I know its bad in Detroit, and could be much worse for everyone else. In fact, before the series started, I had some disagreeing with me because I stated I wouldn’t mind seeing the Wings win again this year because Detroit’s been kicked so hard this year when they are already down.

But we’re talking pretty harmless shit talking on a sports blog here. You guys cant find a job. We let our CPS students kill each other. Every town has its problems. And those problems, can, will, and should be the subject of jokes during the course of an NHL playoff series. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Now go cash your government check and get out of here.

VERSTEEG! rang one off the post, and the Wings d-men were turning pucks over left and right.

For the first maybe half of the game Detroit was fumbling badly with passes. I can’t recall the last game where they looked so clumsy in their end, I guess it was the ice as mentioned.

Overcoming the Detroit backcheck is gonna be tough, they killed the Ducks with it, especially Datsyuk.

I don’t think the Hawks can run and gun with the Wings, the only limited success has been the grind down low game that the Ducks played.

P. Sharp

The Wings finally put the clamps down on Sharp. He has had their number for a couple of seasons like Nash from Columbus did this year. The BlackHawks are in trouble if they have to use there shut down line on Filipula, Samuelsson and Hudler. As you wrote in your post, Datsyuk acts like he is just going through the motions out there. I’ve been saying it for two weeks now that he is going to have a breakout game. If it happens, it will be because of that big dumb oaf Eager taking a run and missing him.

You stay classy, OP.

I was just perusing the Thread, and I’d really prefer if this site doesn’t turn into a “You suck” “No you suck” “Get bent” meathead-athon if we can help it. I’m sure there are a few Scum fans hiding in there who just want to piss people off, but the ones who have been posting regularly here, like ahtrap I believe, seem to be rather literate and intelligent, and we don’t really need all the back-and-forth.

You refer to the Wings as “scum” in the header, use eloquent terms such as “Valteri McFagFag” and “Boozy Cleary”…and then play the “can’t we all just get along” card???

YOU started it, pal. Three more games and you’re done. SCOREBOARD.

by Matthew Dirt on May 18, 2009 10:44 AM CDT up reply actions

Just one game, but...

1. Great hockey game. The neutral zone trap was not missed.

2. Speed kills. The old men kept the pressure up. Gives you a better appreciation of the pressure the Hawks put on other teams. Hawks can only hope to play more physical and wear ‘em down. And remember kids, you can’t mail in even one shift.

3. Shutdown d? Seabs and Keith responsible for first two goals. Can’t happen again.

4. Osgood is beatable, but Scum defense was huge after first 10 minutes. More traffic in front, throw it on net.

Great game? How about sloppy...

The hawks were sloppy in every facet of their game. Khabby made some incredible saves but also let in a few WTF goals. Play will be improved in Game deuce.

They’ll need to keep it simple to win in Detroit. Put the puck on net, dump it in and hit when it’s there.

Let’s send Pierre a Shamwow.

by Dunkdropsa2 on May 18, 2009 10:08 AM CDT reply actions

Yeah, I didn't think it was great at all.

For the first time all playoffs, the Hawks looked jittery, stupid, and young. Credit Detroit’s speed and pressure for that, and hopefully they’re ready in Game 2.

Got more soul than a sock with a hole.

by chrome on May 18, 2009 10:27 AM CDT up reply actions

Sloppy?

You’re right. The Hawks need to be crisper. How about we schedule Phoenix for tomorrow night?

For the most part, the effort was there, and brief let-ups and mistakes were punished. Up and down the ice. Only two teams with four lines could have played this game.

As far as Khabi WTF goals, I counted one, better than par for the course considering the barrage.

I can’t believe Scum was this sharp against Anaheim. For all the adulation, they were an 8 seed.

by cliffkoroll on May 18, 2009 11:05 AM CDT up reply actions

Thing is, the mighty dorks were an 8 seed who grinded their way to a cup a couple of years ago, and knew, and had no compunction about using their elbows to level the playing field. The Hawks can play physical, but their best mode is when they can play the hybrid physical/skill game. The problem in this series is that the Red Wings can outskill Chicago, and without really committing to the physical, you’ll have what happened in game 1, the Red Wings with more space to roam and set up than they did against the Ducks, and Detroit can turn that space into goals in a heartbeat.

Chicago’s going to have to turn up the physical play in game 2, and hope the refs keep swallowing their whistles like they did in game 1.

by ahtrap on May 18, 2009 12:58 PM CDT up reply actions

nope, I'm not buying it.

I’m just not buying that the Wrongs are “more skilled” than the Hawks. I can believe that they have more experience, so what? I have more experience than my 5 year old. I can even believe that they were calmer due to “having been there before.” However, I am just not going to buy into the more/less skilled BS that has been flung around by too many Wrong fans.

As for the Refs… There were WAY too many no-calls on both sides of the puck, but the next game, they will blow the whistle if a fucking fan falls down because SOMEBODY must have tripped him!!!

I have to agree

We all knew those small mistakes were going to lead to potentially insurmountable obstacles. I was astounded that it was a 2-2 tie at the start of the third (that’s more a comment on how bad we played the second) and I was sure we’d come out and show the true grit for that last period, thereby stealing #1. I mean, playing 2 out of 3 periods seems pretty normal for us in these playoffs. The first 2 Scum goals were nothing shy of excruciatingly painful to watch. So all we had to do was come out flying for the third and walk away with Game 1. Instead, we shit the bed and played one of the most ridiculous looking periods we’ve seen against the last team you can get away with that against.

This wasn’t Habbi’s fault and it sure wasn’t the ref’s fault either. Buff was doing good things but Kane looked like someone fed him 8 purple-downers in his pre-game Gatorade – and I’m definitely calling that jitters. JHC showed spark enough and I even thought Toew’s had a reasonable 2-way game going. Detroit use their points better than any team I’ve seen, so that’s maybe one defensive area our forwards will have to tighten up.

Having said all this, I am more confident now than before this game that we go back to Chi-town with a split. Let’s not forget how thrilled we all were in those first 10 minutes. This thing is do-able.

"Call Detroit, tell dem... BULLSHIT!"

Ugh...

Seabs and Keith were brutal on Sunday. I’ve never been a huge Campbell fan, but he was easily the Hawks best defensman and that scares me. Especially when he’s streaking up the boards ahead of the Hawk forwards.

- Waay too much standing around. I thought Ladd was one of the guiliest of this. Guys kept waiting for someone else to do the dirty work.

- The game turned on Khabby’s soft goal against Cleary. I’m not blaming Khabby for anything. he played out of his mind the rest of the way. But the Hawks looked like crap from that point on.

- I’m not a huge rosenberg fan in the Trib, but he was dead on. The Hawks best players HAVE to be the Hawks best players for them to win. Kane and Toews were abysmal when they were on the ice.

I think they’ll play better in G 2. But if we’re gonna take the series, it’s going to start at the blueline with Seabs and Keith.

Speaking of standing around

I believe it was the 3rd Wing goal, I’m drawing a blank on who scored that, but whoever it was had all the time in the world the entire shift. Every Hawks player on the ice was stationary when he got that shot off, particularly Eager, who looked like he had concrete blocks on his feet.

Got more soul than a sock with a hole.

by chrome on May 18, 2009 12:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Samuelsson got that one, and yeah, it was a strange play, because he blocked Lebda’s shot from the point, gathered the puck, and then wandered in a circular route to the opposite circle without ever getting touched before beating Khabibulin for the goal. I t was like that scene from the movie Over the Hedge where the overcaffeinated hyper squirrel is moving around, with everything floating by in slow motion…

by ahtrap on May 18, 2009 1:01 PM CDT up reply actions

It was the Havlat line

On that 3rd goal. Eager, Havlat and Bolland. Campbell and HJALMARSSON on D. bad bad bad bad.

I want to say that goal occurred at the end of a shift. But it’s no excuse. They weren’t moving at all.

This is going to be awesome.

This original 6 sereis is all i could really ask for this playoffs. 2 great teams, 2 sport fanatic cities. Althought i think the wings have to much expierence and smarts to loose to the hawks i still think the hawks will give us our money’s worth and i could be wrong about the outcome. yesterday’s game was still fun as hell. Please though the arguing back and forth on chat forums…. sooo dumb. just enjoy the game.

A day removed

Well that was just the way I pictured a loss going. Too many many turnovers and too many sloppy plays. Biscuit whiffing on the puck (i know, i know, bad hop) and Keith getting out-manned behind our net- we just need better play out of our best defensemen. We stayed in the game longer than deserved with Khabby playing out of his mind. We certainly outplayed them the first 10 minutes, but you can’t dominate the energy level for an entire 60- especially on the road.

Its going to take better hockey. Smarter decisions, being strong with the puck, all the stupid cheesy shit. The Scum are just too damn good to keep giving chances. The Hawks have it in them, we have seen it in the last few weeks. Their best is good enough

Pierre Mcguirre loves to interview players from Detroit...

But, like the rest of us….he would not want to live there. That’s right I said it…Detroit won game 1 but at least WE DON’T HAVE TO LIVE IN DETROIT. I wonder how many of the Wings fans that visit the UC are from Detroit. Toews and Kane were on the ice for 15 minutes in that game and they cannot be blamed for the first goal in which Toews won the face-off, I think it was brilliant of Q to use his physical players for most of the game early in the series to see if they could pull it off on their own. There were definitely times when the Hawks were outskating the Wings. Can’t wait for games 2 and 3. Crack The Skye boys!
