Reactions and Thoughts on Game 4

What a day - I didn't watch the game live, got back from a short vacation probably just after the game ended and immediately started watching it on my DVR (god bless you, you little magic box).

Needless to say though, it almost ruined my entire weekend.

McClure summed it up nicely in the recap - I don't think I'd been that embarrassed watching the Hawks in a long time.  It was far different from previous years' embarrassment ("Tyler Arnason and Bryan Berard are our point leaders?!  Fuuucckk").  It was the feeling of watching an entire team explode before your eyes at the worst possible time.

I was planning on linking to a bunch of other Hawks and Wings blogs to get the spectrum on how people are feeling - but I'll spare you.  It's all too painful right now..

I've told you all before that I think "experience" is overrated.  And I think people use the word "class" way too much in talking about sports.  But man did the Hawks ever show a lack of either.

They've gotta feel like the time you show up wasted to a friend's low-key dinner party, puke in the sink then pass out in the bathroom.  I know I'm not the only ass that's done that, right?  The Hawks have to be regretting what they did and now they have two more days to sit on it.  I hope it's torture. (Versteeg: "Oh man, did I really challange Kronwall to a fight?  Jesus.. that Night Train's a mean wine").

Even better is that I've been on Troll-duty ever since then.  A few have gotten through the cracks and I've even preemptively banned a few - that's fun.

Well the best thing for the Hawks to do now is realize they screwed up in the worst  way and realize they put themselves in a hole that they might not be able to climb out of.  Three in a row against the Canucks was hard - Three in a row against the Scum... ouch.

Don't forget that this team has shown time and time again that they can step up their game when it's needed most.  The next three are all win or go home so lets see how our boys react.  Hopefully better than they did yesterday.

Lets Go Hawks

Make Them Earn It

So, we don’t have a Stanley Cup caliber goalie.

Clearly, we’re not as deep a Scum. A dazed Havlat was a bigger hole than a missing Lidstrom.

9 goals in 4 games? How about 5 Wednesday, regardless of how many we give up.

Let this team know they’ve been in a series. Sixty minutes of hell. They oughtta be loose. And who knows, maybe a W.

It took me til now to realize how much I love hockey.

The feeling I had was akin to that at the end of last year when I watched my favorite little cutie Felippe Massa lose the WDC in F1 in Brazil. It was just wrong, on so many levels, it was oh so close, and then the stunning loss. My heart broke a little bit.

I know enough to follow sports, although I never considered myself a big sports fan. The thing is, well first of all, just hearing the sounds of hockey made me want to skate so bad I went and broke my wrist on friggin rental skates (been a long time since my own fit me). Just watching this Hawks team and their spirit and cameraderie brought back so many good memories of the past. Watching them play could be frustrating, but when they played well, it was oh so worth it. A Hawks win has the power to lift my spirits and make me forget my troubles. A Hawks loss makes me sad, but I know the team will come back and play again and surprise and thrill me.

Like watching F1, this team made me want to learn more about the more intricate rules, and more about the team. They make me want to join with like-minded fans to discuss and cheer them on to victory. They make me pissed off that I let my husband take my son to the UC back in January, instead of going myself.

But yesterday in the 3rd period, I pretty much felt nothing. It was as if I didn’t know who was playing, as I’d never seen them before play like that.

Whether or not they make it to the Stanley Cup finals, I don’t care, I just don’t ever want to see what I saw yesterday again. I want my old team back.

If I can't be a good example, I'll just be a horrible warning

And I was “this close” to forgetting what it’s really like to have grown up a Chicago sports fan. What happened Sunday seemed to dominate our sports scene here for decades at a time. It was hard to to take the defeatest attiude during the late 2nd and 3rd periods on Sunday and think that “hey, at least they made it this far” but that’s exactly what I found myself doing. Talk about a wasted three hours of my life.

It’s a new day, though, and just think if the Hawks can post a W in Scumtown in game 5….then who knows…its back to the UC and no way can they provide another circus act that was Sunday’s game.

They did not play an adequate game of hockey.

Hey thor,

I have been looking for the link of that Chinese place that everyone got jerseys from, and I know you have talked about it before. By any chance do you have the link?

reeboknhl.com seems to sell discounted Hawks jerseys. Somewhere in the neighborhood of $55. Not quite as good of a selection, and they seem to think every jersey should have the A on it, but it beats paying over $150 for a jersey I guess. Couldn’t speak to the quality or anything though

No time for eulogizin!

Class shmlash. Class is something to worry about after a game or series- accept the win/loss, pay kudos to your opponent, avoid making excuses (if you lost) and move on.

If I wanted class on the ice, I wouldn’t be a Blackhawks fan….or a hockey fan at that. Yesterday’s antics represent the boys’ frustration & disdain for losing, which I don’t have a problem seeing. They’re hungry and expect better. The problem is, it started too early in the game for a team that has the tools to bounce back from big deficits. I’m afraid it’s due to lack of confidence in Huet.

This is where experience comes into play- composure in the face of adversity. Starts with Q and Bowman identifying our own weaknesses and making the key adjustments. If Huet’s our guy, then a more defensive approach may be required (I hate the trap, but if it gets us to the finals….trap away!) Or at least keep a forward high in the o-zone, as the Scum’s fastbreak is just killing us.

Shake it off and move on. Take it one game at a time and once Khabby returns so will the confidence in droves!

PS- 1st post. Love the Blog and the insightful commentary. Sorry for the rant- just couldn’t keep it bottled up anymore. C’mon you Hawks!!!

Yesterday's antics were a bunch of childish BS

The Hawks looked like they forgot everything about playing hockey and were just trying to start fights on the ice. Pathetic.

Hopefully they got it all out of their systems and they go back to playing smart hockey like we know they can. I’m feeling a win on Wednesday. Maybe it’ll come true.

yep

and even at the retaliation game they failed miserably and in so I don’t think they have gotten it out of their system. They should realize by now that no one on the Wings are going to drop their gloves no matter what. I mean remember a few months ago when I believe Roman Polak crushed Hossa into the boards and put him out for a few weeks…the Wings did nothing about it. All the Hawks had to do was line up more of these Detroit Swedish Elite Wings for some big hits(like the Versteeg on Ericsson and Paulsson on Filipula hits) because anything else isn’t going to work…fights, slashes, and just a bunch of yapping and running around the ice like a bunch of rink rats isn’t going to work.

Very good point

That hit by Pahlsson on Filppula… Ehh, I don’t think that’s what the Hawks need to do more of. But that Versteeg hit was a great hit. That’s the type of hockey that needs to be played. Versteeg had played great against the Wings all year until Game 4. He just lost it. They have to show the same composure they did in the previous rounds. They came back from deficits like every game. They just chipped away and didn’t give up. It couldn’t have helped their cause seeing their coach go off either. As a coach you want to make your players accountable. If you believe the refs screwed you, then you aren’t going to look at what you do wrong. Remember Therrien for the Pens last year. They found out the hard way too. Let us fans complain about reffing, the players and coaches have a job to do and that is do their best to win. If that means fighting through bad calls, then so be it. EVERY team has to fight through that. I haven’t seen ANY team’s fans say they get good reffing.

You aren’t going to beat the Wings by playing fancy either, like Kane tries. I’ve said it before, as a Wings fan I’ve seen this team lose consistently against ONE style of play. Get the puck deep, and forecheck the heck out of them. Rafalski and Kronwall especially are susceptible behind their net and in the corners. They never want to just air the puck out and are always looking to make a play. Pressure them and it will lead to turnovers. The Wings D-men are very good at defending against teams who try to carry the puck into the zone all by themselves. Watch how Anaheim did it. They always either dumped it in, or found a late man to pass to. Let’s face it, Wings fans and Hawks fans know that the Hawks played good enough to win in each of the first 3 games. Those games came down to who made the last mistake. It’s obvious that the Wings are the better team right now, but who says the “better” team on paper has to win. In hockey it is usually the team that works the hardest that wins. Skill helps, but there is no lack of skill on the Hawks, and they have plenty of guys to do the dirty work. This is the biggest area where experience comes in. I never really believe much of the experience crap either, but it does help teams fight through adversity mentally. You have to be mentally tough as well as physically tough to win in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

All coach Q did with his presser is to show that they really don’t believe anymore. Coach Babcock had every right to whine about the Kronwall penalty, and sometimes us Wings fans wish that he would actually get upset once in a while… but then we are reminded what it looks like. Sure we fans are going to complain about bad calls until we are blue in the face it’s our right as fans, but the teams can’t afford to do it. They need to focus on their game only. Brian Campbell’s “gutless” claim didn’t help either. If it was regular season and a home and home series, then fine. That’s the regular season… that’s hockey. In the playoffs you just have to put it behind you, store it in your memory banks for the 6 games the next year.

This is the FIRST year of the new era of the Hawks. They should be around for a long time… hopefully. This rivalry is much more enjoyable when both teams are good. A little bit more team defense and this team will be ready to vie for the Cup, whether that happens this year yet or in the following years… who knows, but only then will the Hawks drink from Lord Stanley’s Cup. There is no other team, besides the Wings of course, that I would rather see win the Cup in the West.

"Yesterday’s antics represent the boys’ frustration & disdain for losing"

Considering yesterday’s antics pretty much led to a loss, I hope the boys are able to put 2 and 2 together. There are NHL teams whose whole strategy is to try and piss off the other team to the point that they lose focus, then take advantage. Detroit isn’t one of them, but they showed what happens when an opponent is focused on getting even instead of getting a win.

Save the stupid shit for the regular season, the only revenge that matters in the playoffs is getting your name etched on the Cup.

Just a couple of observations:

1. It’s still possible for us to rifle off 3 wins and take this thing. It’s unlikely, but possible. I have to give credit to the Wings; they’re a great team and they are playing smart hockey.

2. So what if we don’t win? Seriously. Getting this deep in the playoffs is only going to make us that much more formidable next season. I know we want to win now, and with our success against Calgary and Vancouver we’ve all dared to hope, but if someone would have told me in the beginning of the playoffs that we were going to drop to the Wings in 5 or 6 in the conference finals, I wouldn’t have been surprised. I’m really pleased for the boys to have done so well. If the series does end within the next game or two, I know it will sting, but I also know the experience will pay off in spades resulting in a bright future for a young team that has a lot of upside. Winners aren’t created in a vacuum. It takes time, bumps and bruises, and hard knocks to build a champion. Let’s not forget that it took Michael and the Bulls 3 times to get by the Pistons. Those epic battles against the Bad Boys made them mentally and physically stronger. Once they learned to play the game at the highest level, the rest became legend.

Don’t get me wrong; I’m not throwing in the towel. I’ll watch and root faithfully until the last horn, but no matter that happens, I’m proud of these young men and I look forward to watching this dynasty take its place in modern day hockey history.

'84 Bears?

I agree that it is not over, but Sunday was a tough pill.

The Bulls-Pistons analogy is tempting, but maybe the 1984 Bears is more apt. A young, fresh surprising team gets schooled in the conference championship, and learns its lesson quickly.

The Hawks have a fair number of great fans, but I can’r belioeve how many people are crapping on this team right now.

Lessons learned...

This team has been good at learning lessons this year for the most part. So I hope they let the Kronwall hit go and focus on doing the things that win games. I thought the team looked like they were still in bed during the first period. No jump at all as far as I could tell. The lack of composure was tough to watch as it reminded me of the old days with Manson, Peluso and Grimson losing their minds on occasion. Only problem with that is, no one was being beaten or crushed in the manner that those three were capable of and sorry but Kris Versteeg isn’t nearly as big as any of them. Or as entertaining to watch in the physical department. My hope is that they come out with tons of energy and finish their checks with authority on the way to a win. We know they can play better, hopefully we’ll see it in Game 5. The lack of focus only played into the strengths of the Wings as they seem to be very good at reading the play before it develops and being in the right place. The Hawks were way out of position most of the game and the lack of focus was hard to watch. Let’s get the next one and go from there!

Pathetic

One word to describe the Blackhawks play on Sunday. Or easily substitute these others:

dominated, outplayed, outcoached, classless, undisciplined, stupid, immature, lethargic, disgraceful, owned.

They were boys amongst Men. Detroit made them look ridiculous. On Sunday, it was clearly evident the Hawks are the youngest team in the NHL.

16 penalties (most stupid) and 56 penalty minutes. 56. In Game 4 of a Conference Finals series and the most important singular game for the franchise in 15 years. WTF? Did they all collectively loose their minds? I thought I had watching that game. They nary resembled the team we’ve watched all season.

Quenneville better lay down the lumber to get these guys’ heads out of their asses for Game 5. His comment about the “worst call in sports history” was childish. As the coach, he needs to set the tone and lead by example and get his team focused on execution of hockey fundamentals. Great example – whining about the referees. A call went against you? Deal with it.

If they can’t win, they need to lose with dignity and not like a whiny pre-pubescent teenager.

feh

Got home from Indy, turned on the tape of the game . . . and discovered the VCR hadn’t worked. We rooted around and found a replay of the game; it was the middle of the 3rd. Once I saw the score, I was just as glad we hadn’t sat through what must have been a terrible, awful, not very good game. Seeing a team put forth a great effort and lose is painful, but seeing a team put forth what sounds like a heinously bad effort and lose is too depressing.

OTOH, it’s been a great run so far, and a lot of fun. Here’s hoping it lasts a little longer . . .
