Around SBN: NFL Roundtable: Which Draft Pick Is Most Likely To Bust?

Look me in the eye then, tell me, that I’m satisfied

OK - fess up.. how many of you shaved last night?  I think I'm the only one who left the beard untouched.. mostly because I didn't trust myself around a razor (just real drunk... not suicidal).

Last night was disappointing, sure, but this season has been far from it.  The love-fest is in full force on the recap Sam wrote but I thought I'd put in my piece too.

A huge thank you to everyone who reads this site.  I started a blog because I was bored during the summer (and by the way.. starting a hockey blog in the middle of the summer but after the first day of free agents?  brilliant move).  I never thought we'd get to the level we're at now.. just like I never thought I'd seriously be considering a Stanley Cup this year.. but it happens.

So once again - A huge thank you for reading the blog, for all the comments, for buying the Indian, for coming out to the Whirlaway or the Huettenbar (we only had to call the paramedics once.. good for us!  Anyone know if that girl is OK?). We truly do appreciate all the kind comments and emails.

It's been a blast.

But we're also not going away.. we'll still be around with stuff for the draft, free agent day, prospect and training camps, the convention not to mention season recaps, player reviews and all other sorts of good stuff.  Onward my friends... Onward.

Thank You!

This place has been great to come and BS, Argue, and love what we all do and that is the Blackhawks. Can’t wait for next season already but that doesn’t been i’ll be taking a hiatus until then. Look forward to more to read from everyone.

I still haven't shaved since I graduated.

I’m doing slightly better than Kane…

Also, I don’t think I can quit this blog, as evidenced by my ever-present, um, presence today. I’m looking forward to my first off-season on a hockey blog. I’ve done it on South Side Sox, but I was never as frequent a commenter over there as I am here. I’m sure we’ll have plenty of somewhat-relevant news to quibble over, and maybe we can plan a summer meet-up or something — maybe the convention? (Although I wouldn’t be able to go on Saturday or Sunday; I’m riding in RAGBRAI, a ridiculous week-long bike ride across the state of Iowa, and it starts in Omaha on Sunday.)

In any case, thanks for not sucking.

NOW STOP IT RIGHT HERE

Me either

I mean, I did shave my legs. And I’m sure I’ll be around this summer as I like to sit at my computer and I run out of games to play. And yeah, the not sucking part.

But mjthor, the biking thing? Dude, you know you can drive and get places faster, right? Oh wait, maybe that’s why I’m not losing those pounds I put on….

Thanks

I found this site about a month ago- it’s gold Jerry, pure gold.

I like the analysis, I love the passion, the banter, and the manner in which it’s all presented- this site is awesome. Within weeks of finding this place, you were quickly moved to my bookmark tool-bar in Firefox.

Now, props to the Blackhawks for making it as far as they have. Truly, even though they lost the series, they lost to a better team and maybe I’m overstating things a bit, but these Hawks have given me hope. Not in just their success, but in their fight and tenacity. I just can’t say it enough- I absolutely love this team.

Thanks for the Blog. I rarely post but read often. Nice Mats reference as well. Look forward to off season moves. Yes, shaved my beard last night. It was driving me crazy and was beginning to look like crap. Started to scare my students.

And I plan to drown my sorrows on Saturday at MayFest. Thank God we have the Germans to help forget our hockey problem. It would be nice if we could on the French…

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I didn’t post much, but read multiple times daily. I loved everything about this site – the analysis, the comments, the posts, the photoshops, and the beards. You truly ran a great site and captured the passion of the fans of our Hawks.

So thank you, thank you, thank you. Though I will continue to read over the summer, I will still miss the witty bantor getting thrown around during the season – I’ll probably even miss the trolls. (Well maybe not them, but making fun of them.)

Thanks again!

It's been a long road here

I remember before you guys came here. This was a nothing blog. I was writing all the game previews and the owner was non existent. Game threads were 8 posts long. I wrote to Mirtle asking for a change to be made. I ran my own hockey blog on another site called “Second City Hockey.” Mainly it was about betting on hockey, and I didn’t want to do this site as well. It’s amazing that as the season has gone on the regular posters has gone from 2 to over 100. The work here has been impressive and all 3 of you guys should be proud.

To paraphrase the woman of our board. I’ve been here the longest so my opinion matters most. My opinion is you’ve all done a great job.

"Oh, that's easy. White Sox. I'm not one of these fair-weather fans. You go to Wrigley Field, you have a beer; beautiful people up there. People aren't watching the game. It's not serious. White Sox, that's baseball. South Side." -O'Bama

I am also demanding an edit post feature

I’m tired of typing something wrong like “to many times” instead of “too many times” and knowing I’ll here about it.

It’s a strange balance on this site when we can call someone Valteri McFagFag but god forbid if I can’t get proper sentence structure.

I'm just glad

a place like this exists. I’ve been lurking around the o-boards for a couple of seasons and they’re batshit over there, so having a sane and exciting place to come to for ‘Hawks talk is very much appreciated. I only started commenting during the Vancouver series, but it’s been fun the whole way, and I’m excited about the future.

Your game wraps have been much-appreciated, too.

They’ve been very enjoyable to read, and you’ve got a real flair for writing. Although, I have to admit that the latest (and last) one is a bit cliche (despite the fact that you clearly stated you wanted to avoid cliches), but I don’t know how you can wrap up a season-ending game without venturing into the realm of cliche. Who am I kidding? 90% of the posts since last night have been a huge clusterfuck of cliches, so I don’t know why I’m singling you out. Keep up the good work.

was it something off of one of their later c.d.’s like “Dont Tell A Soul”? I have to go back and listen to “Tim” and “Pleased to Meet Me” just to make sure. Again, nice work boys! Lets have a great " looking forward to next season" summer in Chicago. No, Matt and Sam, that is not a slap at the Cubs.

Here's

a general 2009-10 look ahead…contracts/FAs/speculation etc.

http://espn.go.com/chicago/columns/blog?name=cimaglia

by Crease Monkey on May 28, 2009 3:59 PM CDT reply actions

and do I understand this correctly

are Kane and Toews’ contracts escalating this coming year or after next year?

I’m seeing them going up as
Kane from $875K to $3.725M
Toews from $850K to $2.8M

and then just minor raises to Ladd and a few others not counting the Restricted Free Agents or Unrestricted Free Agents.

Restricted
Versteeg
Bolland
Eager
Frazier
Brouwer
Barker

Unrestricted
Nik
JHC
Pahlsson
Walker
Johnson

so if Toews and Kane’s contracts escalate this coming year their money will essentially replace Havlat’s and the raises to the Restricted FAs should soak up at least half if not more of Nik’s $6.7m. so I guess the Hawks aren’t going to have as much money leftover as I thought.

by Crease Monkey on May 28, 2009 4:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Next year is the last year of both of their deals (and Keith’s) so yeah, it looks like that’s a chunk already gone. If that’s how the cap works, I’m not sure. I know it’s the average of the whole contract, but since there’s only 1 year left I would assume the cap hit = the salary in the final year. Seems to be it would be a good idea to get one or both extended before the end of next year especially if that helps relieve cap space.
As for the UFA’s, Habby’s gone for sure and I would think one of Walker or Johnson would be gone also. Probably Johnson based on the blackmail Walker seems to possess.

My goal? World domination.

by stickhandler on May 28, 2009 4:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Possibly Walker and Johnson gone

Depending on the health of Sopel and how ready Hendry looks (I haven’t seen him so I have no idea. Just a thought).

You and I are gonna live forever

by Original Six on May 28, 2009 4:27 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah

that’s what I thought on Toews/Kane too…

Walker and Johnson made $600K and $500K respectively…and neither would be likely get much more on the open market so if Tallon wants to bring one or even both of them back I’m sure he could do that provided at least one of Sopel or Barker is traded.

by Crease Monkey on May 28, 2009 4:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Barker is a FA

"Oh, that's easy. White Sox. I'm not one of these fair-weather fans. You go to Wrigley Field, you have a beer; beautiful people up there. People aren't watching the game. It's not serious. White Sox, that's baseball. South Side." -O'Bama

by Hawk is God on May 29, 2009 12:05 PM CDT up reply actions

restricted though. They don’t tend to get moved very often. I don’t know offhand what type of RFA he is, but any team signing him as a RFA would owe some compensation to the Hawks I believe.

My goal? World domination.

by stickhandler on May 29, 2009 12:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Not to mention the salary cap is almost surely going down next year.

Havlat’s as good as gone, and the decisions still don’t get any easier.

That’s why I’m hoping Buff’s two rounds and two weeks of playing hard get him a suitor, because his 3 million dollars for a 50% effort can most easily be replaced.

Got more soul than a sock with a hole.

by chrome on May 28, 2009 5:23 PM CDT up reply actions

rumor was

they were offering Havlat a front loaded long term contract on the order of 8-10 years. That way they average the Cap hit out over the term of the contract and still give Marty a nice pay rate for 2-3 years up front.

by runningquicklynowhere on May 28, 2009 5:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Thanks for the link

Does it seem like a bunch of shit to anyone else that the NHL still has not settled on what the cap will be for next season? I mean free agency is little more than a month away. Seems like that figure is pretty important for GMs (ie DT) trying to work out extensions for their soon-to-be free agents (ie JHC).

by Geoffhawk on May 28, 2009 4:39 PM CDT up reply actions

I believe they wait to settle on the cap until the final revenue sharing numbers are in. Not sure but they may not get those numbers until the playoffs are done.

by runningquicklynowhere on May 28, 2009 4:42 PM CDT up reply actions

that's a good point

I’m sure the NHL suits and owners will be meeting with their beancounters and economists after the Finals and gauging where they think the economy will be headed and how many teams took a financial hit this year. It would appear that given the current climate that the cap is going to go down but like the writer above noted, it wouldn’t seem a very good idea to lower it all at one point. It needs to be spread out so they should drop it a little over the next couple years.

by Crease Monkey on May 28, 2009 4:49 PM CDT up reply actions

it will be lower next year

the question is how much. The collective bargaining agreement does tie it to league revenues to account for the economy potentially sucking like it does now. They just need the final revenue numbers to compute how much it is going to go down. I am sure each team or the league has someone with an estimate, but not the final numbers yet.

Thanks men

What a great year for the Hawks, made even better by this blog. Tip of the hat to all for the great content, including analysis, comments, links, and a lot of good laughs. Kind of lonely being a Hawks fan in upstate NY, this blog has been my go-to place for Hawks info since chikill and associates took over. Long time reader, very infrequent poster – just how I am and not a reflection on anyone here. And the occasional Mats reference is much appreciated – Color Me Impresssed.

Oh, and I haven’t shaved my beard since 1993 – it helps cover up the ugly. A lot grayer now tho.

Let’s go HAWKS!
