No Dude, That F---s With Our Plan: A Quick Off-season checklist

So I can't quit you people, I just have to write something.  After taking a day, I thought of a few things I think the Hawks need to do this summer.  I submit them for your consideration.

Give Tallon an extension:  As if this will happen.  All the quotes we hear from the higher-ups do not bode well for Dale, and it's unfair.  You do not let your coach or GM go into the last year of a deal as a lame duck.  How's Dale supposed to think long-term if he thinks he auditioning for his job in 2010?  We're sure Scotty Bowman has Rocky's and McD's ear, but he's not exactly unbiased, is he. with his son next in line?  Quite frankly, the whole Scotty Bowman thing is starting to sicken me.  What kind of message does that send to the rest of the league?  This is Dale's team, and he deserves a longer ride with it.  I don't think Tallon is the best GM in the league or anything close, but I think he's a hell of a lot farther away from the bumbling doofus some paint him out to be.  We're still not sure the Huet and Campbell signings weren't McD Productions.  A good organization rewards those that have done well, and any way you slice it, Dale has.

-Resign Dave Bolland Tomorrow:  Yes, I'm a little biased, owning a Bolland Winter Classic jersey as I do.  But, to quote Chris Block, "In a salary-cap era, Dave Bolland is a #2 center."  It's hard to figure where Fabulous Weapon's ceiling is, but I know it's pretty damn high.  He also gives you strength up the middle in the same fashion that Detroit has, i.e. an entire corps of centers who play well on both ends.  You'd be 2/3rds of the way there with Toews and Bolland.  As long as you're strong at the blue line and up the middle, you'll always be a contender, for the most part.

-Be Cautious As To What You Resign VerStud for:  Look, we all love Kris here.  He's been exciting, entertaining as all hell on and off the ice, and was a genuine surprise.  That being said, I have this funny feeling about VerBeauty.  When I watch him, I don't know for sure that I'm not seeing a player as good as he will be already.  I'm not basing that on anything logical, just a feeling I get.  The Fifth Feather has a great post about this today, and offer sheets in general.  Frankly, the only size offer-sheet that will make the Hawks think twice is anything over 3 million, and I wonder if any team will think VerStud is worth 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks.  Might be a good idea to let the market determine where Versteeg's value is, maybe you get him for cheaper than you think.  Oh, and tell him to get the fucking puck in fucking deep once a week.

Sell High on Dustin Byfuglien: You're never going to get a better chance to unload this guy (and in my wet dreams it's part of a package for Kovalchuk, but those will remain my dreams).  Yes, he showed flashes in the playoffs of being the dominant player we all think he can be.  But A) I don't trust him to do it all the time, and B) you have players in the pipe-line who are supposed to fill this role anyway.  Both Aliu and Beach are this sort of player, when they're not in jail at least, and personally I think even Troy Brouwer could probably fill it with a year's experience under his belt.  I know Brouwer is kind of a laughing-stock on this site, and with good reason (ohmygodohmygodohmygodohcrap), but he does have two 35+ goal seasons in the "a" on his resume, so there is something to work with there.  We're going to need Buff's cap space, and someone will take him.

Do Not Trade Cam Barker:  I've seen some rumblings about this from a couple places, and it makes me urpy.  Yes, with the current set-up, Barks is actually your #5 d-man.  And it seems silly to pay your #5 d-man $3 mil+ or what it might take.  But with Barker and Campbell, you'll always have a deadly power play, and he also provides size on the blue-line which the Hawks don't have much of, and there isn't much coming from Rockford.  If another team makes this guy a huge offer the Hawks can't match, fine, we'll take the picks.  But Barker made some huge strides this year, and might have been the best player on the ice for most of the Calgary series.  Again, strength on the blue-line and up the middle, contender for years.

Offer Jesus Havlat What You Can:  This doesn't necessarily mean sign him.  This might be the biggest debate over the next month.  In my mind, Havlat is simply a true-gamebreaker, and there aren't many of those lying around.  I know people think that once he's signed long-term, he'll go back to 50 games a year at most.  I don't buy that.  I don't think Havlat has ever jaked an injury, or not given his all when he was fully healthy.  Though he's had some groin issues, most of his injury problems stem from a balky shoulder that is not the sign of someone out of shape.  From all indications the surgery he had last summer fixed these problems.  Maybe it's something you're never free from, and the Hawks should be aware of that.  That being said, I'd offer Havlat a long-term, Franzen-like deal, because we can't afford much else.  If Marty wants to go chase as much money as he can for as many years as he can, that's his right (and I have this feeling that the Bleu, Blanc, and Rouge are going to offer a lot of both).  With these "negotiations" having gone on as long as it sounds like they have, my bet is the Hawks have already offered one of these, and Havlat's holding out for more.  I hope I'm wrong.

Do Not Let John McDonough Sign Jeremy Roenick: You're going to hear about this one, believe me.  I know McD is staring at possible headlines, and JR is already angling for a return.  Though the inner-child in all of us would probably rejoice at #27 flying around the UC ice again, he doesn't fit, and the Hawks dont' need headlines for headlines' sake.

Next year’s Goaltender duo……Huet and Crawford.

That scares me, because I just dont trust Huet to be consistent. I like Crawford but he is in no way ready to be an NHL #1 guy.

by G8K33P3R on May 29, 2009 1:35 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't know that we know Crawford or Niemi aren't capable of stepping up.

next year.

They both have put up great numbers in Rockford. Crawford’s done decently well in his brief time in the NHL. Niemi didn’t, but it was only one game. I also don’t know that Huet doesn’t play well either. For most of the year, he was matching Khabby in just about everything but wins, which is a hard stat to hold against him. He had a rough stretch just before Khabby returned from his second injury, but who’s to say he doesn’t take the reigns next year as the sole #1 goalie and run with them?

Goalies are wierd, and Huet is French. Maybe sharing duties affected him. Maybe not.

But, like it or not, he’s our guy, and that’s not a real concern of mine this offseason.

I lol’d at that.

I second that and I’m a goalie. LOL

oh I know he’s the man, for better or worse. Wishing for a trade or a release is just a worthless and silly thought. I just don’t like what I see from his mechanics. He’s lazy in his recovery. But I hope he proves me wrong or we’re in for a lot of frustrating games.

Thomas has some goofy mechanics too

and he seems to have done alright in the NHL.

But I know what you mean. I just choose to hope he steps up next year, because I’m a hopey kind of guy.

Agree completely about Fabulous Weapon

Bolland had similar numbers to Kane with the London Knights, and his NHL development seems to be operating in reverse of Kane’s- his defense has always been solid, and his offensive game will hopefully keep developing. Factor in that he anchored our most reliable line all season, and I’d like to see him wearing the Indian Head for just as long as the rest of our youngsters. Maybe I just have a soft spot for defensive centers, but there aren’t always enough of them to go around, and we should keep the one we have as long as possible.

You completely hit everything I hoped for this off season.

As for Tallen, word has it that Stan is next in line, and does a lot of the GM duties as it is. So I’d figure Tallen is on his way out.

Also

I am not quite as sickened by Bowman because I think he has made a great impact on the team, but I do feel for Tallen. I’m not sure what you posted at the time of Savy’s firing, but I am pretty sure it was Bowman’s doing.

On Bowman

You don’t rack up all those Cups for nothing. I think he has a lot of influence behind the curtain and I think that’s good. Gotta be rough for Tallon though, for sure.

“Sell High on Dustin Byfuglien: You’re never going to get a better chance to unload this guy (and in my wet dreams it’s part of a package for Kovalchuk”

I’m on board there…the Hawks need a closer especially if Havlat is cest la vie. I don’t think a package of Buff, a Dman like Barker, and/or Crawford/Niemi and perhaps a draft pick would get it done but who knows…perhaps the Thrash’s revenue this season was even worse than it seemed and perhaps Kovalchuk will state publicly that he won’t sign an extension in ATL and they’ll look to deal him. Havlat makes everyone better when he can stay on the ice but he’s just not a $6-7m a year player especially with his injury history…he’s great but not elite and you can make a lot of ties to Campbell’s contract here. Paying a great player – elite player money. Sort of like paying Johan Santana $22m a year instead of wasting $18m a year on Carlos Zambrano. One elite pitcher and one great pitcher (well sometimes) making similar coin. I’m hoping for M.Gaborik wanting to take a one year deal for normal star money to revitalize his max worth before signing a long term deal…but I’m getting the feeling that someone with a lot of cap room like the Kings or Canadians will toss more than fair market value at him on a long term deal.

Two Words

Jarett Stoll. If LA is desperate for size, which I believe they are, he and Buff are the same hit on the cap, with Stoll having I think two more years than Buff. Think of our centers: Tazer, Weapon and Stoll. That’s so good it’s almost inappropriate for public consumption.

Byfuglien

I’m curious, after watching him go apeshit on my team, who else do you have in the pipeline that plays his style?

And, to that end, I’d say call Keenan if he was still in Calgary’s organization. Now I’d just say call Sather since he’s a hungry little fool.

We have

Two junior criminals named Kyle Beach and Akim Aliu. Both bigger guys (though smaller than Buff) that play with an edge (of insanity). Aliu plays like somebody fucked his mom, then shit in his cereal on the way out of the house. And Beach acts like the guy who just fucked Aliu’s mom. There are attitude problems with both (they were kicked off the Hawks AHL team for “detrimental actions to the IceHog Team” whatever that means), but I personally hope that they can get their act together. Could be fun having those two roaming the ice.

Agree on some...

…and disagree on some.

Tallon has done a solid job scouting and drafting in the last 3-4 years. He has been helped by having high picks, but he still deserves credit for getting more right, than wrong. On the other side, he has put the club in a difficult spot in regards to cap issues and that can be a killer in regards to how today’s NHL is run. I don’t care if Rocky and McDonough approved the Huet and Campbell signings, it is still the GM’s responsbility to make sure he is making the right choices – otherwise he isn’t needed. I would not extend Tallon, because there are still too many question marks as to how good a GM he will be in the “hard cap” world.

I don’t think you give McDonough enouph credit for wanting to win. Sure, he won’t miss a marketing opportunity, but I don’t believe he would put that in front of winning. You simply don’t bring in a guy like Scotty Bowman unless you are serious about listening to what he has to say. Whether you like the Scotty and son arrangement or not, there is no one better to get advice from then him. As an example, Savard would never have been fired if Bowman wasn’t on board, and I highly doubt this team would have grown to the level it did without making the change to a guy with a lot more experience.

I would love to keep Havlet, but it is going to be a very difficult task with the money they will need to retain the young core guys in 2010. The only way I see this happening is if Havlet would accept a one year deal (like Hossa did in Detroit), or possibly accepting a 2-3 year deal that is heavily front loaded (not a cap expert and have no idea whether this would help for 2010).

Huet will be the man in 09, and to think otherwise is a waste of time. I have my doubts, but he really impressed me with his play in game 5. Maybe he is the type of guy who will be at his best if he knows the job is his, and there isn’t someone waiting in the wings to take it away.

Great piece Sam

As far as Tallon, I think he has done an outstanding job in drafting talent and acquiring key players through trades, but I’d prefer he stay far, far away from free agency if he was the one behind the Campbell and Huet signings

Agree on Bolland, fantastic player who is solid defensively, lock him up

Agree on Versteeg but if someone makes him too big of an offer let him go

If we can package Buff for a physical defensive minded center I would do it in a heartbeat, hell I guarantee there are GM’s out there who would love to have Buff after his playoffs

Cam Barker needs to be signed as well, made huge strides this year and has an outstanding shot from the point, that unlike Campbell’s actually hits the net. I’d love to have him back on the point for many years to come

No to Roenick

Lets Go Hawks!

I agree on most points

Your analysis on Bolland and Buff is excellent and dead on. The lack of center depth is a little scary on this team. Especially before Pahlsson came over. Bolland has been impressive as hell. I can’t really remember him having any truly bad games.

My only point of minor disagreement would be with Barker. I know talent-wise he’s not a #5 D-man, but with the current defense corps, he’s essentially a poor man’s Brian Campbell. And with Campbell locked up for so long and for so much, Barker is pretty expensive depth. But he’s obviously talented and worth something on the market whereas we’re also saddled with that cap vampire Sopel who isn’t worth a bag of used pucks on the market. As much as it would hurt, I’d say Barker is expendable.

My goal? World domination.

The Problem With Buff (for the place where he lands)

Whoever signs him might have the same problem we have with Huet — a huge contract for someone who, frankly, just isn’t worth the top-of-the-line contract. So somebody could get super-screwed on that deal.

Keep in mind that there is a certain Boston Red Sox / Jeff Bagwell problem with letting the young ones go. You have to really judge — really, really closely — who you decide to keep and who you decide to let go. Be honest: Havlat has been hit with injuries. VERSTEEG! (in a Mason-free year) wins the Calder. Buff may be more durable than we think, and may be an out-and-out stud during the next (regular) season if he doesn’t get all stupid and forget what a boss he was during the Vancouver series.

And so you get to keep two of the three, and only if you are judicious about the other contracts — including whatever Zetterberg-style long-term marriages that it makes sense to pull off. Who do you let go — keeping in mind that death is not an option? After pleading for allowing death to be an option, I’d let Havlat go and concentrate on youth. (The decision would blow and suck at the same time, but the economics require a choice to be made, with a risk that the choice could be absolutely wrong.)

One last point: I’m really beginning to hate the salary cap. Especially now, when we have a front office that is in a mood to throw around money like they were in a strip club. Shit.

Damn it — this is hard.

WAIT FOR THE WHISTLE!

Few Thoughts on Tallon

I see a lot of people give Tallon grief over his off-season acquisitions of Campbell and Huet and frankly, I think its short-sighted at best. We landed the unquestioned best D-man and the best goalie in the free agent market when (a) Atlanta was willing to pay more for Campbell and he was being courted seriously by at least 6 other teams; (b) landing a puck-moving d-man was #1 on our off season wishlist; and (c ) we weren’t even supposed to be in the running for a goalie and we still ended up with the best guy available.

Here’s my defense of those two moves.
Campbell – Our power play was absolute garbage last year and he came in and pretty much fixed it. Watch our first unit w/ BC carrying the puck into the zone and then watch the 2nd unit w/ Seabs or Keith doing the same job. You’ll notice a quicker & crisper entry, more sustained pressure and more scoring chances far more often on the Campbell unit. Everyone was aware that 5on5 there were some defensive deficiencies in his game, but its not like those manifested only this year. We knew what we were getting and he lived up to expectations. There wasn’t another “new” player on this team that made a bigger impact than Campbell this year, like him or not.

Huet – Don’t blame Tallon for being forced to go out and get a goalie this offseason. Blame Khabibulin. If Bulin had played up to his contract in any of the last 3 seasons, a goalie wouldn’t have even been on their radar. We would’ve kept around Lalime or promoted Crawford. But Bulin’s failings forced Tallon’s hand…and he got the best guy available. Everyone seems to conveniently forget how bad the Bulin Wall had played the past 3 years and how little confidence anyone had in him coming into the season.

Couple that with Tallon’s extremely deep high minor system (Rockford is stacked with talent), good recent drafts, and a few GM fleecings (Versteeg and Sharp come to mind) and you have to be happy with the job he’s done in the past few years.

Tallon deserves an extension.

by hoorock89 on May 29, 2009 8:10 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

To be or not to be, that is the question?

Dale Tallon is and still will be the GM of the Chicago Blackhawks for many years to come and will most likely end up with a well-deserved extension. To quote McDonough on CTL: “Dale is the architect of this franchise…” Enough said.
Granted some of his FA signings haven’t panned out but the 2 FA signings this season were desperately needed and filled the major voids in this line-up.
The PP needed a QB and he fixed that with one of the best in the business in Campbell. His 44 assists and 52 points were the best point total by a Hawks defenceman in quite some time and was one of most consistant performers in the playoffs, especially in Round 2 when he was the MVP for the Hawks.
Agree with hoorock89 on that the Huet signing was Khabibulin’s fault for being such a dud, and that Khabby should be let go because of that. It’s a major character flaw when a guy only delivers on a contract year. Huet wasn’t a bad signing at all in fact with Cristo being ‘the man’ next season might elevate his game for he knows that even with a bad start there is nobody to take his place. He definitely struggled at times throughout the regular season but in Game 5 vs the Wings he showed that he can carry a team in a pressure packed playoff game.
As for the back-up situation I don’t get the feeling that Niemi and Crawford will be the answer and that the Hawks may go to the FA amrket to get one. Some names that are available are Clemmenson, Emery, and Legace. All have NHL experience and all would fit in nicely as a back-up but are quality enough to be the guy if something were to happen to Cristo. Emery has the brighter future but his personality may be an issue but may be a more ‘bang for your buck’ if he keeps his head on straight.
Bolland needing to be re-signed a complete no-brainer. He definitley showed that he can be a #2 centreman that he can be responsible in both areas. Bolland has the necessary skilled quailties needed to play with an offensive dynamo like Havlat (another that needs to be resigned). His overall game has improved and has become an important piece to this team and that shouldn’t be lost.
Havlat was finally healthy this year and was the player he expected he would be and deserves to stay here and for a while. Would have no quarrels if Havlat was given a Franzen-like extension for he is major piece to this team. Granted there is injury problems with Havlat, but that’s in his past and there is a true sense of believe that he is over that and that we’ll see a healthy JHC for many years to come. May have to overpay to keep him but that’s the price of doing business in today’s NHL.
Versteeg is a take it or leave it type of player. He has skill but no tenacity behind and far to often doesn’t make the simple plays a 3rd line player should. Versteeg is 2nd to 3rd line player at best and if a team is willing to offer him Penner like money then it’s time to part ways. Happy if he stays, but not disappointed if he leaves.
Barker’s development this season was astounding to say the least and needs to be kept on this blueline. With elevated ice-time and responsibilities Barker could be another Shea Weber type of defenceman that finally comes into his own. Barker is starting to fill out as a the type of defenceman that the Hawks thought he would be with the 3rd overall pick and that bodes well for the future. As for overpaying for #4-5 defenceman look at the Wings with Brad Stuart and his partner Niklas Kronwall. Both at times this season seen their respective minutes below those of Lebda and Lilja. Depth is an asset especially at D and the Hawks can’t overlook that.
Deal Brouwer not Byfuglien! Big Buff had tremendous upside but needs to develop as an everyday effort type of player. If he can then the enigma will be gone and star may be born. Brouwer not so much. The guy has no finish whatsoever and is easily replaceable.
Brouwer had ZERO goals in the playoffs…ZERO! So why keep him? His type of production in the clutch should grant him a trade to San Jose. I’m sure there are many players in Rockford that can replace Brouwer. The Hawks brass could use hime to trade up (from the 28th pick) in the upcoming draft.
JR? Well…a one-day contract to retire as a Hawk? O.K., anything more than that NO WAY!
All in all this has been the most successful season since 1992 which is amazing, especially when you consider the direction this franchise is going. But next year’s goal is to be the most successful season since 1961 and with a few minor adjustments that goal can become reality. The Hawks need tweeking and that’s all which is a far cry better than where they have been in the off-season previous.
LET’S GO HAWKS!!!

Thoughtful Post

Reluctant as I am to let Buff go, I think you’re right. His value is high right now…Canada went ga-ga for him during the playoffs.

Kane had some comment about how it’ll be basically impossible to keep this team together. What a shame!

The Patriots and Red Wings sell the idea of playing for a champion. In a cap era, this is the only way to maintain a competitive advantage. Can Havlat set this example here? He got three years of big money for 1.5 years of hockey. Doesn’t he want to win?

Maybe Soupy can even cough up a million or so…yeah right.

Don’t spend any serious money resigning Pahlsson.
