Who you got? Picking the Stanley Cup winners

Yeah - I know the Hawks are done but there's still some hockey left to be played this season.  Hurts more than usual, don't it?

I'll be watching the games but the quesiton is, who to put my faith in.

Well actually - to me, it's no question at all.  There's no way I could ever ever hope for the Scum to win the whole thing.  Impossible. It helps too that I have a few very good friends who are big Penguins fans and I'm hoping for their happiness.  So I'm throwing my lot in with the rest of those rooting for the black and gold.

From looking at some of the comments in some of the other threads though it seems some of you hate Pittsburgh more than you do Detroit which is shocking to me.  I know that the NHL and the media shoves Sidney and the Pens down our throats but that hasn't ever really bothered me much.  Or at least, it doesn't bother me as much as seeing Detroit skate around with the cup again.

So who you got?

rooting interest aside, what’s your prediction on the series?

Frank over at Pensburgh is tallying up the SBN hockey blog in for us or against us fashion, and has you down for the Pens, on rooting interest…I wanna know what you think actually will happen?

I have a lot of trouble separating my heart from my head.. but I do think the Pens will win this one.. In Six

by Matthew Dirt on May 30, 2009 11:55 AM CDT up reply actions

so far they seem incapable of closing out serieses (is that a word?) at home, so if Pens are gonna do it, it will be in 5 or 7.

I’m picking the Wings, of course, though I agree on the 6th game deciding things.

Totally off-topic, beware

Finally got to listen to some of the Opeth in Hubby’s car. Great stuff! Thanks for the recommendation.

If I can't be a good example, I'll just be a horrible warning

i really wann know

who the 8 votes r for the scum…Unless we got some Motown fans with nothing better to do (since the obviously don’t work) who the hell would be rooting for Detroit. Even if you hate Pitt, what would be better then seeing Hossa miss out two years in a row?

I am a Chelios fan and I hate people who dive in professional sports.
Therefore I am forced to go for the dead wrongs rather than root for Sodomy Crysby.

Check

I’m one of those that is sick of Cindy being shoved down my throat and can’t stand that the supposed “face of the league” is a whining, diving bitch. I’ll puke if I have to see that wanker skating with the Cup because that will be used for every NHL promo from here until the end of time.
I say let the Wings keep the dynasty going. It will make it that much sweeter when the Hawks end their run.

My goal? World domination.

I’m votingScum. For me it boils down to the single most intense hatred I have for any one player on either team, and that’s Malkin, the I’ll-play-when-I-feel-like-it Jagr of his generation. Plus, Fleury has the chompers of a beaver and makes me laugh every time he talks. Plus, fuck him, but Lidstrom is hard to hate.

The crazy part is: it's a public poll.

Anyone can vote — even Wings fans!

Damn that cup looks beautiful

imagine that being trucked around Chicago in the near future.

Pittsburg to hoist the cup, our beloved soften the Wings up nicely for them.

You have to ask me nicely!

Go (PUKE!!) non-flying avian creatures of Batman fame!

I’m really hoping Eurotroit scum are getting out of bed this morning in their battered, bruised, and bleeding bodies asking themselves “how the hell can I get through this? Please just make the pain go away!”

And I’d like to think our boys have more than just a little to do with that.

I really just don't care either way.

I certainly have more respect for Detroit than Pitt, but it’s beyond me to actually root for them. Unlike some people, I don’t really hate the Pens, I’m just completely ambivolent towards them.

If Detroit wins again, good for them. If the Pens win, I’m glad they beat Detroit.

That’s about as much emotion as I can muster for this series.

Got more soul than a sock with a hole.

Fuck....the Wings are going to win!

The Wings in 5! You heard it and I absolutely hate saying it but reality is reality the Penguins are the NHL’s version of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Have team a good enough to win a competively weak Eastern Conference but not good enough to beat a powerhouse from the West. The Wings are a lot like the Lakers and are used to winning and will win again. Crosby and Malkin and terrific players 2 of the very best this league has to offer but hockey, as with most sports, is a team game and the Wings posess too many weapons for the Pens to handle and this has the potential to be a walk-over. The Penguins are still the same team as they were last season just a Hossa less, which further compounds the problem now that Hossa is with the Wings. Fleury needs to be Huet and Hiller-like for the Penguins to have a chance for the pairing of Hal Gill and Mark Eaton are going to get exposed…like Ralph Wiggum exposed. Brooks Orkpik is average at best and Sergei Gonchar is another Campbell and sorry…Letang and Scuderi and not Seabrook and Keith. The Penguins defence is hideous and will be overpowered in this series. If you think the Hawks have trouble getting the puck out of thier own end just watch this defence.
Outside of the 2 offensive magicians there is nothing much. Kunitz, Guerin, Staal (not the good one Eric either), Satan (who belongs on the Wings just for his name), and Fedetenko doesn’t strike fear in any defence let alone the Wings. With the Capitals gone (thank-you Varlmanov) the Eastern Conference has no shot at the Cup…NONE!
This is a mismatch of epic proportions and will play out that way with this time the Wings not celebrating before Game 5 and taking care of business.
It sucks and I hate it but that is reality…and it bites but the Wings will win it’s 5th Cup in 13 years and all I have to say FUCK! We have to beat them next season…we just have to!!!

by hawks61 on May 30, 2009 2:37 PM CDT reply actions

I agree with you that the West is the stronger conference, and that Detroit is definitely the stronger of the two and can roll out a whole team consisting of depth … but, um, have you watched the Pens during these playoffs?

Gil is paired with Scuderi (not Eaton), and they have been the Pens’ premier shutdown pairing over these playoffs, and the defense corps in general has definitely improved since last year. I’m not saying they’re on par with the Wings, but they’re better than they were.

While Staal doesn’t put up the offensive production of his brother (which, sidenote, Eric didn’t exactly prove himself to be “the good one” during the ECF) he is a very strong defensive forward and is able to provide pressure and energy with his linemates.

And, sorry, but if Washington was the Eastern Conference’s best chance at a Cup, and if the Pens dispatched them in a pretty epic Game 7 beat-down, then wouldn’t that imply that maybe the Pens — having won the conference — are indeed the Eastern Conference’s best chance at a Cup?

The teams were horribly mismatched last year, and the fact that the Pens were able to win two games is kind of shocking in hindsight. The Penguins have learned from last year, and while they still don’t match up with the Wings, I think they’ll be able to take Detroit to seven games — where, as goes the cliche, anything can happen.

by walkon on May 30, 2009 4:09 PM CDT up reply actions

They are horribly

Over matched this year again. They might win one game now. I’m thinking sweep if they can’t even beat an injured team. I can’t stand Detroit just like any other Hawks fan but the fact of the matter is they are simply heads and shoulders better then ANYONE in the NHL right now. And thats not a good thing for us as Hawks fans or hockey in general. More of the same team winning all the time hurts more then helps the NHL, unless that is you live in Michigan.

by SLAZZ on Jun 1, 2009 2:56 AM CDT up reply actions

It's a good thing they got Hossa

… with Draper, Datsyuk, Lidstrom, Ericsson, and dare I say even Osgood (rising to his feet slower and slower) looking somewhat the worse for wear. It just isn’t 2008 anymore. We’ll see. I mean, we’ve all seen enough of the scum to absolutely never underestimate them, but they look a little more beat each time they skate out for the pre-game circuits as the playoffs progress. Looking at the scores etc., they were VERY lucky to get through the Hawks without a couple more games to exhaust them a little further.

If I were John Fahey, who replaced Dick Pound (love that name) as the chairman of the WADA, I’d be sending a few “random sample” vials over to the Euroscum dressing room. I don’t know why people think steroids would be absent in Hockey – for many injuries (such as ligament damage) they can cut healing times in half.

But that is an ENTIRELY different discussion.

"Call Detroit, tell dem... BULLSHIT!"

by Hungryhawk on May 30, 2009 5:56 PM CDT up reply actions

No convinced

I’m definitely biased for the Hawks. That said, Detroit, in the playoffs this year, did not convince me they are some unbeatable powerhouse. For a lot of their goals, they lived off absolute gift turnovers that I would argue were not even forced. Khabbi, though awesome at times also let in some real soft goals. When the wings pumped in three goals in five minutes, that was impressive and near demoralizing. Aside from that, I don’t think they dominated much at all. Even after keeping the Hawks shut down for most of the game, they gave Kane an inch and he burried it. More than outplayed, I think they have outlasted the rest of the west, and they got phenomenal goaltending when it mattered most; certainly better than ours on the whole.

Weak as the east may be, the Pens came out on top of it after going to the show last year and losing. I think that counts for something. Throw in the NHL’s handicapping by forcing two games back to back and I have to say I give the Pens and edge.

by NKLHD on May 30, 2009 3:38 PM CDT reply actions

no convinced

SO your saying the Wings were not that good, the Hawks are just that bad.

Or maybe...

that the Scum just visited a witch doctor before the playoffs and bought a whole shwag of goofy bounces… like the ones we watched again tonight.

which doctor ?

I have to admit to the lucky bounces. The doctor who got Ericsson ready was the only one Detroit needed. I look forward to being abused by Second City faithful next year. GO WINGS

Holding onto Hope

Until the home team loses, its still a series. I figure the pens will do just like the hawks and come out guns blazing and win game 3. Only then to choke on a dick for game 4 and almost through game 5. Then the universe will do us a favor and right as the clock is about to strike 0 the meteor will blow the joe straight to hell.
