The Good:  Certainly not our lack of pictures for him.  Anyway, Barker had a Huet-like year, in that it was deceptively good, but you had to look real hard to see it.  The 40 points were nice.  The real story is Barker's work on the PP.  According to Behind The Net', Barks was the 6th best point-man on the man-advantage in the league.  And if you watched every Hawks game, you saw this too.  It wasn't necessarily the work of Barker getting into the zone, though he usually makes the correct first pass, but once in it.  Either unleashing his booming shot and finding a way through, or knowing when to keep the puck moving.  Quenneville never moved Barker off the first unit, but didn't hesitate to do so to Campbell.  Obviously, Q thinks it's Barker who makes the power play tick, and it's hard to disagree.  Plus, that spread out the talent over the two units, and the second unit really started to hum in the postseason with Campbell on it.  But back to the point at hand, Barker also started to let his physical side out towards the end of the season, and was probably the best Hawk in the Calgary series.  The -6 and sub-Behind the Net number at even-strength aren't pretty, but some of that may be due to being paired with Campbell for most of the year, or Walker, and neither complements Barker's game very well.

The Bad:  Let's face it, Barker's not quick, and can get beat from time to time.  He'll eventually learn better positioning, this being only his second full year of experience.  His decision making at times can be abstract, notice the Game 1 winner against Vancouver.  And I won't buy into him using his size until he does it for a full year.  Sometimes, he can be maddeningly soft, and only time will tell if that's a thing of the past.

Nicknames:  Pretty sure he didn't have any, occasionally called him Barks.  We'll work on this.

Playoff Beard Strength:  Pretty solid, and matched his pack-of-cowboy-killers-a-day voice.

Photoshops:  None, but he seemingly did this interview with Sarah Spain in his own house where we're pretty convinced neither he or Eager were wearing pants, and they admitted they've seen what we do:

The Grade:  This one isn't as cut and dried for me, and I know it isn't for a lot of Hawks fans either.  I do disagree with the contention that Barker brings a lot of what the Hawks have already.  Barks is a good puck mover, of which the Hawks only have one in Campbell.  Keith isn't, though he could be soon, with better passing.  Right now Keith is just fast.  Barker would be the exact opposite, only possessing the ablity to move the puck out of the zone by a pass.  As I dance more and more to to the rhythm of the Fracois Beauchemin drum that McClure keeps beating, I can't help but think that would be the perfect partner for Cameron.  A big body to match Cam's, giving the Hawks one of those, but someone who can stay at home and cover for Barker's chance-taking, and allow us to see what he can really do.  But as for season past, B sounds right.  What you say?

Barker nicknames

Me and the gal pals refer to Barker almost exclusively as The Accountant. Because he just doesn’t look like a hockey player. Whenever (all six times) he scores my sister texts me “hey, didn’t that guy do my taxes this year?”

it also lends itself to bad jokes like “the accountant needs to crunch more numbers …”, etc.

Barker is redundant on the Hawks

I like Barker, but his game has definite limitations. I think he stands a good chance of being traded this offseason. Which is fine by me. Hmaljorssen (I have yet to spell his name correctly or the same way two times in a row so cut me a break) is a better player for the Hawks.

You mean, let me understand this cause, ya know maybe it's me, I'm a little messed up maybe, but I'm funny how, I mean funny like I'm a clown, I amuse you? I make you laugh, I'm here to amuse you? What do you mean funny, funny how? How am I funny?

A C- but

If he used that big body more, and stopped looking so lost at time a easy B.I agree with BLou would be great trade bait.

I think of any grade worse than a B-, say, as an indication that the player was a letdown. And given the year we had, when in October every single fan would have been ecstatic just to have been guaranteed 7 games in a well-fought first round as an 8th seed … well, I think the low grades are a bit surprising.

I don’t think anyone on the team deserves worse than a B-, truly. As the youngest team in the league we went to the Western Conference finals in a year that would have had no one hugely surprised had we fought for and lost that 8th seed.

Bam-Bam (wait... that one is taken)

I agree with Maki, I have to change my grade of him from a C to a B-. I forgot how young he is. Think about how far he has come since the 07-08 season (when he would not touch people in the corners). Big young defensemen take a long time to develop and Cam improved by leaps and bounds over last year. His mistakes are very few and he actually does a great job of being there when someone else does make a mistake. Good year for Cam, but more will be expected of him in the future. Personally, I would like to see the whole defensive squad take boxing lessons in the off-season. That’s not a slam, (and they don’t have to instigate fighting) I just know that the Hawks have to be stronger when facing opponents like Columbus, Vancouver, and Anaheim.

I don’t worry about the fighting aspect because I think Tallon is going to replace Walker with another bigger/stronger/physical type like an Adam Pardy to combine with the other relatively less physical D-men (aside from Seabs) since that seems to be Q’s preference…but you can say more than a few of the Hawks need to get stronger in the upper body including Duncan Keith…he could definitely use a Bowflex along with Kaner and a few others if they’re not going to be around Chicago to train in the off-season. If you’re going to have a Pardy type and an Eager around you don’t really need more than 2 fighter types anyway otherwise you turn into the Ducks and take a crap load of penalties.

Barker - the odd man out?

It seems as though Barker will be a sign and trade — according to Al Cimaglia’s blog the other day.http://espn.go.com/chicago/columns/blog?post=4245783&name=cimaglia

It makes some sense as we have a lot of guys that are similar in style of play, strengths, etc. Barker’s PP ability is solid, but so is Soupy’s. We shall see.

Evil will always triumph, because good is dumb.
