'08-'09 Season Review: Patrick Kane
The Good: A lot more of it then I think a lot of people realize, and McClure and I are both terrified of where the comments might lead on this one. Anyway, Kane once again, for the most part, showed better hands than anyone who has plied his trade on the West Side since Savard. For the first three months of the season, until THAT Cleary hit, he was a point-per-game player, and a dominating force on the power play. His 35 points with the extra man landed him 11th in the league. Come playoff time, he was still a point-per-game player, and produced a tour-de-force in Game 6 against Vancouver that honestly you'll remember for the rest of your life. Sadly, his goal in Game 5 against Scum was even better, but got lost in our elimination. Watch it again, and tell me how many players in the league are capable of that. He also set up Weapon's winner in Game 5 in Vancouver, which turned that series. He still finished the regular season at basically a point-a-game, even though this season he was seeing team's best checking lines and was frequently targeted.
The Bad: Kaner was a lot more streaky this year, and there were huge gaps in his scoring. There were also some pretty lackidaisical play in his own end, and some lazy penalties. I fear these might always be part of his game, but he'll more than make up for it at the other end. He also played through the knee injury suffered at the hands of Cleary, and probably should have taken more time off for it.
Playoff Beard Strength: Sad.
Nicknames: Kaner, Hatrick Kane, Crazy 88's.
Photoshops: I know Thor did one for the hat trick, but I can't find it. Someone will add it here I'm sure.
The Grade: There are some writers and fans (it rhymes with Barry Rozner) who will spend eternity ignoring what a special talent this kid is. They'll question his toughness, which is so fucking ridiculous I want to vomit with rage. This kid was battered by Calgary and Vancouver, and eventually came back to shove it up both their asses. Look at how he fought through checks to set up Sharp in Game 2 against Calgary, or score the first of his hat trick. This kid doesn't give a shit. Yes, he can be a liability in his own zone. Yes, he goes games without scoring. You know who else does? ALMOST EVERY OTHER FUCKING 20-YEAR OLD IN THE LEAGUE. Quite simply, when the Hawks need a moment conjured out of nothing, Kane is the most likely to provide it. How many Hawks could have scored his hattrick completing goal? One, and that's Kane (Havlat maybe). He's put up back-to-back 70 point seasons, mostly as a teenager, and you get the feeling next year he's going to break out even more. It's an A here, if only so I can stand alone from the mouthbreathers. But have your say:

Kane
does take his fair share of unwarranted criticism that’s for sure. Anytime I find myself wanting to say, “this kid is overrated and soft” I tell remind myself that Yzerman didn’t start playing D until Scotty Bowman came aboard and Datsyuk was in Russia until the age of 24 and didn’t become an elite player until he was 27. Then someone will say, “Crosby is just a year older and has put up a lot more points and has that whole Cup thing”…albeit playing along with one of the other best players in the world. So Kaner is somewhere in between right now. I just hope he works harder to get stronger and works on the defensive end and he takes the Datsyuk approach and not the Kariya path.
Well written Sam

The criticism of Kane
baffles me. I recently committed to the Indian this past season and Patrick Kane quickly became my favorite Hawk. I’m sure he could improve on the defensive side of the puck but still, he’s well on his way to becoming a superstar IMO.

It is really hard to criticize any 20 year old that scores 70 fucking points. Of course he’s going to make mistakes, he’s 20. Not many 20 year olds even crack a lineup in this league let alone score 70 points.

It's all relative
I think a lot of the criticism for Kane is as a result of being inextricably linked to Toews, who is a once in a generation player for his maturity and commitment to defense and fundamentals. People need to understand that for a big a freak as Toews is in that regard, Kane is just about equally as much so in his passing ability and puck handling.
Gave him an A
But I do criticize him. Because he does need improvement. Or with improvement, rather, he’d be even better (from an A- to an A+). I don’t expect him to do what he can’t do, but I do want to see him hustle a bit more on the ice. And yes, perhaps it’s hard because he is on with Toews, so expectations are higher.
If I can't be a good example, I'll just be a horrible warning

I honestly expected a so called sophomore slump from Kane this year. I TRULY did not expect him back from “the hit” as quick. I have had 10 knee surgeries myself, including having both kneecaps replaced, (two different hits), and I know what it takes to come back. He has my respect for doing it that quick in this sport..

That last goal
against the scum still gives me goosebumps. Having watched so many young players with potential that never developed because of a miserable front office, I feel like I have cynicism burned into my DNA that tells my brain that Chicago can never have one of those stars who figures it out after a couple of seasons and just explodes with a 3-5 year run of ridiculous accomplishments. Those players exist, just never here it seems. He proved a lot this year and my only big question now is whether Q is the coach that can keep him focused and committed while Kane is feeling the urge to tear the city up after he turns 21. I haven’t seen a ton of interviews with him, but he strikes me as kid who is probably gonna need a person he respects around to keep his head on straight.
Okay okay, I’m the guy you can slam. I’m still not completely sold for the long-term. His offensive talent is exceptional, obviously, and I doubt if anyone close to his size matches it. But to win in our conference—and to get to the Cup—a team needs every line committed to defense, to back-checking. And with the free reign given to our d-men in joining the rush or in pinching along the boards, it’s even more important for a team like ours that the wingers cover and then battle equally as hard skating back as they do skating forward.
I don’t think the guy sucks or anything, not even close, I just think that when you’re talking about elite talent you need to raise the bar in terms of evaluation. Kane himself has talked about needing to commit better to his tenacity in his own zone (he’s talked about watching Toews and learning from him in that respect). I’m just a tiny bit worried, then, when I see that he recognizes the changes he needs to make to his game … but that he hasn’t gone the extra distance to make them.
So it’s a low B from me. And blasphemy beyond blasphemies, I’m not sold on him changing much.
we'll hide out in the bunker together
I love Kaner but you can’t skate harder towards one net than the other. He constantly pulls up short on the boards to avoid a check and tries to use his stick instead, which rarely works. Sure he’s 5’9" and being physical isn’t his job, but if you expect your teammates to have your back every time you get pissed off after a cheapshot, you gotta earn respect.
For positives he’s already our best passer in space and has a better shot than he shows. Offseason priority:adding muscle
yeah
having Toews attached to him at the hip both on the ice and in the Hawks promotional machine isn’t helping. Toews is only one year older and much more of a complete player but it’s also rare that a forward comes into the league as a complete player. Kane certainly doesn’t have Toews’ drive and willingness to pay the price on the boards or around the net and unfortunately if he doesn’t get stronger in the upperbody I fear he’s going to be heading down the Paul Kariya path and when he’s on the ice he’ll be paying more attention to avoiding hits than trying to make plays. We saw how tentative Kane was when he came back from the Cleary hit…and rightfully so as he came back too early…but what’s going to happen to him if he takes a Kronwall on Havlat or Stafford on Keith type concussion hit and he’s out for a month? Hopefully we don’t find out. The Hawks definitely need a skilled power forward with a nasty streak to pair with Kane for years…hopefully Beach will be that guy even as early as this season. Even if he’s only a poor man’s version of Neely/Lucic that will help.

PK88
Is one of the best and most exciting players in the game today! His hat-trick in Game 6 vs. Vancouver is one of the greatest moments for me as a long-time Hawks fan. His play offensively is at times is exilirating with a little bit of (can’t find the right word) ‘the Hawks are finally getting it right’, a sigh of relief so to speak. But never has this kid shown any type of quitter attitude and has shown various amounts of resiliency. Whether it was a January high-ankle sprain to the unknown injury that left him out of Game 3 vs. Calgary Kane always came back with a vengence and has shown time and time again to go to those dirty areas to score and make plays and isn’t the perimeter player many view him as.
Kane needs to work on his overall game. But so does many other players in his age group. Even Malkin, Ovechkin, and Crosby aren’t Selke Award considerations,in fact not even close. So Kane is not so different than many other NHL young stars. Jonathan Toews is a different and very rare type of player that can be dominate in both areas on the ice with the ability to lead that many haven’t seen since Messier so let’s not get to carried away with Kane’s inabilities in his defensive zone. Next season Kane will be better in his own zone and will be a much more improved player all-around and make the same type of progression that Malkin made with the Penguins this season. It’s just the beginning of the evolution of a championship calibre player of Patrick Kane.
A 100-point season is definitely a possibility for Kane next season, in fact I personally guarantee that he will do it. A first for a Hawk since Jeremy Roenick in 1993-94.
Toews and Kane-the Hawks are back and with a vengence.
2009-2010 One Goal:the Stanley Cup and nothing else!!!
Um, thanks for the guarantee. Consider my concerns vanished.
I agree with you regarding his pure talent, but to say Kane plays goes to the dirty areas time and time again is far from accurate. And to compare him to Malkin, Crosby and Ovechkin … well, I don’t know what to say; they’re scoring 40 more points than Kane. Kane’s had two 70-point seasons and doesn’t back-check with any sort of consistent aggressiveness at all.
Son, there are some men you cannot reach!
Um, once again you’ve misread another post. I only compared Kane to Ovechkin and Malkin for their defensive inabilities not their overall game so let’s get that straight. Kane is a phenominal offensive player that still has some maturing to do within his game. Agreed that Crosby and the other 2 score more than 40 points more but their also doing it against much weaker opponents in the East. Does that mean that if Kane was in the East he would get 120 points-NO! But if the other 3 were in the West I doubt they would get much past the 100-point barrier (100-110). Kane still has some strides to make but they are minor ones.
For those who say they would rather have a 70-point guy that’s good at both ends instead of a 100-point player that one-dimensional are the same people that probably wanted Tallon fired after he traded Bell and Calder 3 years ago and in their minds are still better players than Toews and Kane…at least that is what they are insinuating.
Anyways Kane is, what Kane is so why change him? Instead of complaining about him let’s sit back and enjoy the ride that is Hawks hockey these days for their future is brighter than ever and for once the Hawks enter a season as legitimate contenders for the Stanley Cup!!!
Once again?
I have a history of misreading posts? WTF? Explain to me what I’ve misread. “Kane is a phenominal [sic] offensive player that still has some maturing to do within his game.” This is pretty much exactly what I’ve been arguing, adding however that I’m as worried by the slow maturation of his defensive game as I am impressed by his offensive talent.
You compared Kane’s defensive game to Malkin, Crosby and Ovechkin, but to suggest Kane’s weaknesses in this areas mirror theirs is ridiculous. Besides, since Kane’s offensive numbers are nowhere near theirs, then it stands to reason he doesn’t balance out his weak defensive play nearly as effectively as they.
Last, what the fuck are you even talking about … there are fans who think Bell and Calder are better than Kane and Toews? Seriously? Who? They’ve never posted on this board (if they even exist). And they’re the same ones who prefer sound two-way players over one-dimensional players? And they’re also the same ones who wanted Tallon fired after the Calder and Bell trades? Sorry, I guess I do misread a lot of your posts—honestly, though, it’s because I simply cannot follow the logic in them.
I’ve expressed one single thought: that I’m worried about Kane and his slow acceptance of his defensive responsibilities. And then you conclude I’d probably prefer Bell and Calder; that I wanted Tallon fired years ago; that my expression of amazement at your comparison of Kane with the 3 best players in the league is skewed.
Maybe if I just wrote with more exclamation points you’d understand me better.
Bombs Away
Sorry, I’d rather have a 70+ point guy who also prevents goals over a 100 point prima donna whose dad is ALWAYS around and alledgelly in the ear of anyone who will listen that the team “shuould do this and do that for lil PK”.
Interesting someone mentioned JR, another super skilled prima donna who won jack shit while he was here.
We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold.
Eh?
Where is there a link or article that suggests that Kane’s father has been a pain in Tallon’s side? Where? Or are you just making accusations up as you go?
JR won nothing LOL! Guess 3 consecutive 50-goal seasons is nothing right? Guess 3 consecutive 100-point season is nothing right? or leading his team to a President’s Trophy in 1991 and a Campbell Conference Title in 1992 is nothing either?
JR might have left unceremoniously, but his accomplishments while he was here were remarkable and are some of the greatest in Hawks history. Stop blaming JR and look at $$$ Bill for that mess-up!
I don’t need a link or article, i heard it from someone inside the UC. Sure it could be BS but I trust the guy like a brother.
Where did those 50 goal/100 point seasons get the Hawks? Did I miss the Cup parades?
We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold.
I give him an "A".
And vicious, angry growling for what he did to Luongo. Hawks are going to be damned scary in a couple years, Kane and Toews are only going to get better.
Look upon my 62% faceoff win rate, ye mortals, and despair!
