Free Agent Day: Hour 3
1:00 Hour 3 on what just might be a hallucination of a day
1:02 Dreger and McKenzie reporting that it's a long-term deal, and the cap hit will be just over 5 million. Deal could be as long as 12 years.
1:03 The 5 million hit is almost certainly a steal, but if it's 12 years? I mean, 12? I'll be dead before he's a free agent.
1:05 Matt Walker has just signed a four-year deal in Tampa. How many brain bubbles can I have in a 10-minute span?
1:07 I'm literally at a loss for words now. It's all so scrambled. Hossa at a tick over just 5 million is a fine number, and if I was willing to go that high for Havlat, you'd have to be for Hossa who's simply a better player. But 12 years? Unless it's totally front-loaded? We'll need details. I think people also need to widen the focus past Hossa's playoff performance last season. As I've said, the year before he was a mastadon (yeah, i did), and had two years in Ottawa where he was a point-per-game in the playoffs. Maybe this deal signals the end of Patrick Kane here, though I don't know that it does. If Buff can be jettisoned, possibly Sharp might have to go to (McClure just had a stroke) the core can be kept.
1:14 I'm trying to find ways to justify 12 years, and it's hard. The only thing I can cling to is that there'll be a new CBA in a couple years time, and maybe that changes things.
1:16 Also, if Hossa comes in at a 5.2 hit, then Kane and Toews don't. Toews will look like a Richards deal, which I believe is around 5, and Kane probably just around there, which would only bump up your cap numbers by a few million. So many questions...
1:19 Dreger reports that the first 7 years of the deal are worth 53 million, meaning the last 5 are worth 1.8. Can someone explain how a buyout might work after the seventh year, if the system is still the same?
1:21 Brought up in the comments, and we have to focus on it. Hossa's not going to play until he's 42. If he retires after the big money is spent, and this looks like a seven year, 35 million dollar deal (cap wise) what would you think?
1:24 TSN reporting the Hawks have also signed Tomas Kopecky and his broken face, which means Pahlse is headed for the exit door.
1:31 TSN reporting that Kopecky arrives at 1.2 per, which is probably cheaper than Pahlse would have come, and Kopecky is a few years younger. Don't have a problem with this one.
1:33 Kopecky isn't as good in the circle as Sammi, and would never have been asked to do the defensive assignments with Datsyuk and Zetterberg. Does this mean Bolland assumes that role? Toews too? Interesting stuff.
1:38 Dreger now saying that it's 59.3 million over the first 8, leaving the last four at less than a million per. Same difference.
1:40 McGuire's doing that standing-too-close-to-the-host-thing again. Do you think TSN anchors have a bonus in their contracts about doing stand-ups with Pierre? I would certainly negotiate one.
1:44 Something else to consider, this gives the Hawks two more Olympians, as Hossa and Kopecky will be on the slovakian squad. Makes me urpy, ask the 2005-06 Senators how having a ton of Olympians works out.
1:49 Pagnotta says a Huet deal is imminent, which might free up more money. Khabby can't be getting anything more than two years, and we better fucking pray that Niemi or Crawford prove they can handle 30 starts
1:53 Knuble to Washington for 2.8 and Brashear to the Rangers. That'll be an interesting dressing-room entrance.
1:57 With Walker gone, the Hawks have a third-pairing to address. (I don't want to work! I just want to bang the Beauchemin drum all day!!!!)

TheFourthPeriodHawks are apparently close to trading Huet… Hossa deal seems done…
WHAT IS GOING ON??
what the fuck is going on here?
If they were offering 12 year deals, why were they not budging on Havlat?
History of Injuries
JHC has that history.
Sad Panda doesn’t.

Hate to make you cry...
…but Kane is going nowhere. Not now, not probably ever! He’ll probably retire as a Hawk for what he has done in bringing hockey back to Chicago. I know it sounds retarded but that’s what is in Rocky and John’s minds. They will make sure that someone else will go before Kane does. Phantom51 is probably a goner for sure at this moment it really a matter of time now…Florida perhaps especially if the Kubina falls through!!!
So let me get this straight
Although fragile, we weren’t willing to go long term on our leading playoff point scorer, but we’re willing to throw that money against a player who disappeared in the playoffs? Exsqueeze me?

I know
my favorite all time TV show…so much better than the US version although the US version utilizes the supporting cast better…though it’s easier to do so when the original only had 12 episodes. I’m sure you’ve seen the 90 minute special/finale….greatest TV episode ever!

Have you seen Ricky Gervais’s other show, Extras? I was a big fan of that one too, but I’ve only seen the first series
http://accordingtwomey.blogspot.com
yeah I have those too
I bought the 2 season set that came out before Christmas…not as good as the Office but I like it a lot too. He’s got a 90 minute stand-up special running on HBO right now…haven’t had the chance to watch all of it but I have it on DVR

so
we got Hossa on a Wings-like deal. Awesome…well at least for the next few years. How old is Hossa anyway, 29…30?
yeah I thought
30…ouch that hurts in the Alfonso Soriano late career deadweight sense.

yeah
he was a good teammate…and protection for Hedman I guess.

TSN reports Walker signed to Tampa Bay for $1.7M/season for 4 years
http://accordingtwomey.blogspot.com
What is Tampa doing?
Oh yeah it ‘s Lawton running the show for the ’Two and a Half Men’ ownership thing is in ruins right now, like another installment of ‘Saw’.
If true then L.A. is counting on 2 things...
…that he’ll stay healthy enough for this to be a good deal and that he can revive their other 5 million dud in Handzus. Havlat and Handzus together again on the ice for 7 games and then the IR for the rest of the year just like in Chicago.
TSN
Ty Conklin to St. Louis for two years at an average of $ 1.3 million per year for 2 years
Craig Anderson to COL for $3.6m for 2 years..no Huet to COL then
Btwn this Hossa deal and the Huet, Campbell contract debacle...
I don’t expect Tallon to have a job much longer.
I’m really fucking pissed about a TWELVE YEAR DEAL for Hossa.
Looks like Tallon wanted to go out kicking and screaming

Hossa signing is great news
And all the naysayers about the lenght of the deal. See the Franzen deal from Detroit. It will be front loaded allowing them to keep the Big 3 next year
exactly
that’s why there’s probably some cheapo years tacked on to the end of the deal, hence why it is so long term
front loaded deals
have no effect on cap hits.. it doenst matter where the contract is loaded the cap hit is averaged out over the 12 years
I think the point is
that the back end has a few years tacked on at a hugely reduced salary to bring the overall cap hit down.
Dammit...
You beat me by all of about 15 seconds lol
Also heard via the Score
That Campbell envoked his no trade clause. Wonder who they were shopping him too
Don't think that's true
I cant remember ever hearing that Campbell had a no trade clause

“Brian Campbell, CHI – NTC [can provide a list of 8 teams he will accept a trade to; team has 45 days from date notice is received to trade him to any team on that list]”
I stand corrected
nevertheless, they could very well just be reporting on the rumored Heatley for Campbell deal. It is the Score reporting on hockey after all.

we have to be unloading Huet's contract
if this is what’s happening.
Evil will always triumph, because good is dumb.
you'd assume so
COL is now out…EDM? It will almost assuredly have to be a straight salary dump though…perhaps taking back Robert Nilsson…I can’t imagine we’d take Penner and his $4.5m per season
by Crease Monkey on Jul 1, 2009 1:21 PM CDT up reply actions
hossa deal
he’s not going to play for 12 years. he’ll retire in those 2mil a year time frame and then come off the books. same thing detroit did w/ zetterberg and franzen.
salary cap question
What happens if Hossa plays a year or two into those $2 million/year seasons? Is the Hawks cap hit still $5.2 million or is it the average salary of what’s remaining on the contract?
As long as Hossa plays for us, it will cost us 5.2 mil against the cap for that season, but we’ll by then only be paying him 2 mil
I think I just blacked out for the past 10 minutes.
Where the fuck am I?

Buyout
Buyout allows the team to spread out the remaining money of the contract over twice the length remaining on the contract.
Sorry, yes, half of the remaining money over twice the length remaining on the contract.
by ChineseBeatle on Jul 1, 2009 1:26 PM CDT up reply actions
Crease Monkey is correct
Kopecky in the release from the Hawks.
Kane and Toews have to be worth $5.2M a year
How are they going to be able to give those two guys Hossa money? They deserve it more than Hossa does!! Versteeg and Barker are both gone after next year. Don’t know what they’re going to be able to give Keith. This team is fucked.
It's the same way the Red Wings have been doing it
And it seems to be working out pretty well for them. The Big 3 will take long term contracts at the end of next year… with Khabby off the books and Havlat off the books, we’ll be able to get it in under the cap and have a whole bunch of key pieces locked up for a long time.
Buff
has two more years right? 3y/$9m if I recall correctly…I’m sure someone, VAN, would take that contract.

Lost in the shuffle
are our RFA’s, such as Barker, Versteeg, etc. Anybody know how that works? For example, if nobody offers them a contract, can we sign them for the minimum? I know we have the option to match any offer they receive and can be compensated if it isn’t matched, but what else do we know?
http://accordingtwomey.blogspot.com
Rolo
Newsday is reporting that the Islanders have agreed to a two-year deal with Dwayne Roloson for a total of $5 million. Cue Huet to EDM rumors
What do you think would make trading for Huet a better deal than signing Khabby to a more realistic contract from EDM’s perspective?
http://accordingtwomey.blogspot.com
depends
if Khabby would want to sign there…apparently no one does. There’s still a few more FA goalies out there, namely the ex-Philly guys Biron and A.N.
by Crease Monkey on Jul 1, 2009 1:45 PM CDT up reply actions
Hossa and Kopecky?
2009-2010 Chicago Blackhawks
Our goal? Become the Red Wings’ sloppy seconds.
http://accordingtwomey.blogspot.com
If all these rumors about unloading Huet come to fruition, who would we have in the goal? We did resign Niemi, but Crawford isn’t under contract as of yet. So what’s our plan then?
http://accordingtwomey.blogspot.com
Centers
So signing Kopecky clearly means Pahlsson is out. With Kopecky being a winger, are we going to have problems again this year not having enough natural centers?
Heh, exactly. Forget who it was now, but a well-heeled pro scout (heard this during the draft day coverage) said that if you can win 60% of your faceoffs there will always be a job for you in the NHL.
conklin
i really wish tallon made a move on conklin, especially if the rumors of moving huet are true….god i hope he knows what hes doing
DAG GUMMIT!
Shit
I go to a meeting, and the world implodes while I’m out.
I want somebody in the front office to explain how on Earth they resign both Toews and Kane. Those guys are the future of the franchise, and one of them is going to be a goner next year after this.
Huet, Campbell and now Hossa are long term anchors around our neck. Unless they go all-World on us, this looks like a horrendous move.
WAIT FOR THE WHISTLE!
by Sec 326 Bureau Chief on Jul 1, 2009 1:38 PM CDT reply actions
It's not hard
provided that Keith, Toews and Kane are willing to sign longer term deals. They won’t sign long term deals unless the front office shows that they’re going to put a talented team on the ice. Having Hossa there for the next decade helps us to make sure that Kane and Toews will be too. Keep in mind, that’s a ton of money that’s skipping town along with Khabby and Havlat
Next year's deals:
Kane- 22 years, 120 million
Towes- 25 years, 162.5 million
Keith- 18 years, 99 million
I think it should be 18 years
with a team option for the 19th.
plus
the cap should go up at once the recession starts to wane.
by Crease Monkey on Jul 1, 2009 1:47 PM CDT up reply actions
Not sure
But I think the Hawks will resign both Toews and Kane. I mean Bowman, Mcdonough, or Tallon (whoever is running the show) will unload Huet and/ or Campbell which will free up some space. Ther is no way that they would part with either guy or Duncan Keith either
I was under the impression
the Cap Hit is the average of the REMAINDER of the contract. So by the last few years when Hossa is making $2 Mil, shouldn’t his hit be at about $2 Mil. Otherwise Front end loading doesn’t make much sense.
You and I are gonna live forever
No.. it’s the average of the whole deal over all the years.
No.. it’s the average of the whole deal over all the years.Where the front loading makes sense is in making it easier to trade him or buy him out
Second City Hockey - Blackhawks, Beers, Beards & Blasphemy
The cap hit is 5.2 for every year. The front-loading makes it better for teh player: he gets the bulk of his money early in the contract (and so if he retires or gets injured in later years, he will have made most of his contract money). As well, if we wanted to trade him later on , the interested team would only have to pay him that 2 millioin, say, instead of teh cap hit number of 5.2.
If we signed Havat to this deal would people be mad??
I think Hossa is better in terms of health guarantees. We couldn’t get Hossa for one year so forget that argument.
Cheer up people, if nothing else we improved today.
I'm confused
Hawk is God just kind of hit on this as I’m writing. ALL I HEAR for the last few months is we have to sign Havlet. Now we take Hossa instead of Havlet- which is a step up no matter how you look at it and no matter how much you love the perfect beard. So no the Havlet money is just used on Hossa- and the Hawks already said the plan would still have room for our Big 2. They aren’t letting Kane and Toews slip away. Off the fucking ledge kids
I couldn't agree more
We improved today, we should be ecstatic about the move. People need to quit focusing so much on the 12 years and realize we just locked up a great player and no matter how much we love JHC, we upgraded.
by Old World Flavor on Jul 1, 2009 1:45 PM CDT up reply actions
As hard as it is to admit, I have to agree. Hopefully this will set the bar for Kane/Toews to follow suit next year.
They will
and we’ll have Hossa, Toews, Kane, Campbell and Keith on the ice for the next 8 years and we’ll be perennial contenders.
I hate to be elitist, but I’ve got to believe that anyone who is whining about what’s going on is a bandwagon fan and doesn’t remember the dark ages. We’re securing our place as contenders for the next decade… do you remember where we were three years ago?
