Free Agency Madness: Hour 5

3:00:
Sam deserves a break - I'm taking over for him now.  Expect fewer updates since I'm "working" and there's less going on.  But hey, how about that Hossa deal huh?  Am I right?

3:01: And we break in with some huge news right away.  Khabby heads out to join the Oilers.

3:03:  Everyone jumped on Havlat for playing big in a contract year, but not for Khabby.  Guess who was hurt more this season too?  If Khabby's groin doesn't hold this could be a great move.  Though I still would have liked to get some extra space with the cap

3:05:  TSN goes to a press conference with Bouwmeester - this is boring. I'm bored now

3:09:  4 years - 15 Mil for Nik.  That's a 3.75 cap hit (impressed with my math skills?).  That hit would look good in a Hawks sweater, but the length wouldn't.

3:12:  The Northwest division is now Khabby, Luongo, Kipper, Backstrom and... Budaj?

3:16:  McClure reminds me that Anderson signed with the Avs... I suck at this live blogging thing

3:21: Rangers, Oilers, and Maple Leafs are the leading candidates to land Chris Neil... good luck with that guys...

3:22: Flames re-sign Adam Pardy - which reminds me - don't the Blackhawks have some RFAs?

3:25  All right, your Marian Hossa's first Second City Photoshop. Yes, he has the same first name as John Wayne, but he also has the same first name as....

Hossa_tony_medium

and yes, I'm nominating "Fat Tony" as Hossa's Second City name.

3:28:  How long til we get confirmation about these Havlat to the Habs rumors? He's gotta be the next big name to fall.

3:31:  Hey look - Deadspin posts a hockey column - congrats guys.  Didn't even take a story about funeral burgers this time.. how nice

3:37:  It's getting slow around here.. so here's a question - if you had $60 Million what would you do?  Other than two chicks at the same time of course

3:40: Phantom reacts to the Panda signing - http://csnchicago.com/pages/new_landing?Mora-Blackhawks-Sign-Hossa-to-Multi-Year=1&blockID=61828&feedID=661

3:42:  OK we've got Eklund still throwing his dumb ratings around saying Havlat is going to Montreal, San Jose and Columbus - no word on what happened to LA.

3:43:  Tallon is going to be holding a press conference at 4:00... so does that mean he's done for the day?  You can watch it on the official site - I'm guessing TSN cuts over to it too

3:45:  The Habs make the signing official... Hall Gill is shipping off to Montreal - 2 years/4.5 Mil total

3:49:  Eklund says the Habs have something big coming.. dude.. we already talked about Hall Gill.  Anyways, hold onto your butts

3:52:  Just a reminder - we'll be switching over to a new thread at 4:00.. just in time for Tallon's presser

3:57: Fourth Period says Hawks still negotiating with Pahlse... interesting... aaaaaand SWITCH

Nik on

the verge of signing with the Oil…tentative agreement

by Crease Monkey on Jul 1, 2009 3:02 PM CDT reply actions

Im kind of ok with this

hes getting older, and has not played great for us. He was good, but as many have pointed out he never really was lights out short of a few moments…

by Delta0ne1 on Jul 1, 2009 3:04 PM CDT reply actions

I couldn’t agree more. I’m fine with him moving on and keeping Huet

by Big_Will on Jul 1, 2009 3:05 PM CDT up reply actions

With Khabby gone

there is a bit of room available money wise. Havlat, anyone?

Oh, and does Darryl Sutter have any teeth? He looks like my dad with his dentures out.

by russellguldin on Jul 1, 2009 3:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Nik and Huet are about equal in my book.

If we could have saved by signing Nik and trading Huet’s contract, it would have been nice, but I’m fine with Huey being our number one guy.

by Lost In NC on Jul 1, 2009 3:07 PM CDT up reply actions

agreed

and I’m on board with taking a run at Beauche now and clipping Barker’s $3m-ish.

by Crease Monkey on Jul 1, 2009 3:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Bob McKenzie reports that the contract for Khabibulin is four years for $15 million in total.

You and I are gonna live forever

by Original Six on Jul 1, 2009 3:07 PM CDT reply actions

wow

Wonder if he’ll stay healthy for four more years…

VERSTEEG!

by Bwana on Jul 1, 2009 3:08 PM CDT up reply actions

whoa

that’s insane…well I guess we know why he didn’t want a 2 year deal with the Hawks now.

by Crease Monkey on Jul 1, 2009 3:09 PM CDT up reply actions

If that's True

I’m glad the Hawks didn’t match. Huet it is.

by AngryHack on Jul 1, 2009 3:08 PM CDT up reply actions

BIG MISTAKE

To pin our hopes for a cup run on the French Five Hole……

We had better get Scuderi, Beauchemin AND Komisarek.

A great day just went very sour for me.

by Return of the Roar on Jul 1, 2009 3:08 PM CDT reply actions

Gotta disagree

We will be just fine with Huet, plus Khabby was average in the playoffs.

by Geoffhawk on Jul 1, 2009 3:11 PM CDT up reply actions

agreed

there really isn’t much difference between the two other than injury concerns. Huet still makes more (around $2m per year) so if the argument is Khabby + say Beauche vs Huet + Barker…I’d rather have the former but not at a 4 year commitment to Khabby.

by Crease Monkey on Jul 1, 2009 3:14 PM CDT up reply actions

note:

Pierre McScumHonk “loves the Khabby signing at a 4 year deal”…“best move they could make”.

by Crease Monkey on Jul 1, 2009 3:16 PM CDT up reply actions

That is how you know it was a bad thing for the Hawks.

by Return of the Roar on Jul 1, 2009 3:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Pierre McGuirre

The guy whose team moved to Carolina and didn’t tell him.

Now that is a shitty coach.

by russellguldin on Jul 1, 2009 3:25 PM CDT up reply actions

You could not be more wrong on both points

We most certainly will not be fine with Huet. He is mechanically terrible, cannot play the puck outside of the crease to save his life, and of course…the five hole. Next season will prove me correct.

As for Khabi in the playoffs – even Luongo, Osgood or Fluery could not have survived the period after period of onslaught from Detroit as well as Khabi did. Very few soft goals in that series. No defense in front of him. And if we don’t get MORE defense in front of Huet, we may not even make the playoffs next year.

Folks, we are not going to win the cup three or four years from now. If it happens it has to be in the next two years.

by Return of the Roar on Jul 1, 2009 3:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Plus,

what are we gonna do now that the sky is falling?!?!?!?!

You and I are gonna live forever

by Original Six on Jul 1, 2009 3:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Huet is good

he never had a rhythm last season. And remember the last game of the conference finals?

by russellguldin on Jul 1, 2009 3:23 PM CDT up reply actions

agreed

let’s see what he can do with regular PT before casting him off. He goes down too early..hopefully he can correct that.

by Crease Monkey on Jul 1, 2009 3:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Huet is 34. I don’t think he is very correctable at this point.

The tick bomb just went off in the Hawks’ hands.

by Return of the Roar on Jul 1, 2009 3:30 PM CDT up reply actions

I thought it was

Williams, for Buff. After that shoot the puck performance in game 1 vs the flames.

I don't know much about Kopecky........

How do you guys view this signing?

by hackerar on Jul 1, 2009 3:25 PM CDT reply actions

Good move, he was Hossa’s best friend on the Wings

by cdz3210 on Jul 1, 2009 3:28 PM CDT up reply actions

i agree with this

and since it happened right after Hossa signed – it was probably a package deal.

Evil will always triumph, because good is dumb.

by junkhorse on Jul 1, 2009 3:29 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm in favor

We will have a good pivot for a third/fourth line. It sucks for Colin Fraser, who I was hoping would get his reward for his awesome defensive play. Basically, Kopecky has a good two-way game and wins faceoffs in either zone.

by russellguldin on Jul 1, 2009 3:28 PM CDT up reply actions

he didn’t have a good BTN rating posting a -0.03 but I believe he played on a line with the relics most of the year in Draper and Maltby so those ratings may be skewed.

by Crease Monkey on Jul 1, 2009 3:30 PM CDT up reply actions

to be the meat of that suck sandwich.

by russellguldin on Jul 1, 2009 3:31 PM CDT up reply actions

by russellguldin on Jul 1, 2009 3:37 PM CDT up reply actions

What about Kovalev?

any ideas on where he’ll end up? back in Montreal?

Evil will always triumph, because good is dumb.

by junkhorse on Jul 1, 2009 3:28 PM CDT reply actions

Kovalev is in his late 30’s, right? I think he’ll stay with the Habs, but they’ve had so many changes that he may just go.

by russellguldin on Jul 1, 2009 3:30 PM CDT up reply actions

saw a bit

ago that the alleged $2y/$8.8m deal wasn’t finalized with MON. If he doesn’t end up back in MON most of these secondary wingers probably won’t sign until something gets done with Heatley and Gaborik first, then Havlat, Kovalev and Cammalleri should follow suit.

by Crease Monkey on Jul 1, 2009 3:32 PM CDT up reply actions

his PP numbers suffered badly last season

but I would still think he’d be serviceable … but maybe not a good fit for the Hawks.

Evil will always triumph, because good is dumb.

by junkhorse on Jul 1, 2009 3:32 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm ok

with it…it’s a great name for him…not as cool as Kung Fu Panda which is SF Giants Pablo Sandoval’s nickname…but it fits him well.

by Crease Monkey on Jul 1, 2009 3:33 PM CDT up reply actions

I propose we keep sad till he proves he is worthy of dropping it.

by Delta0ne1 on Jul 1, 2009 3:41 PM CDT up reply actions

how cute

These reporters are so desperate for an unstoppable canadian team next year

by ZootSuitZombie on Jul 1, 2009 3:30 PM CDT reply actions

Netminder situation

do we have one now? is it official with Khabby gone? … are we comfortable/content with what we’ve got … I sure as hell am not.

Evil will always triumph, because good is dumb.

by junkhorse on Jul 1, 2009 3:35 PM CDT reply actions

Scott Clemmensen

to the Panthers. Not that it really matters if the Hawks are going to go with Niemi/Crawford as the backup.

by Crease Monkey on Jul 1, 2009 3:35 PM CDT reply actions

this is what i was refering to above

Clemmensen might have worked here if only for a year or two … I don’t know if Niemi/Crawford is ready.

Evil will always triumph, because good is dumb.

by junkhorse on Jul 1, 2009 3:37 PM CDT up reply actions

if Crawford

isn’t ready by now will he ever be?

by runningquicklynowhere on Jul 1, 2009 3:38 PM CDT up reply actions

i guess we'll find out

when he starts for Huet this season.

Evil will always triumph, because good is dumb.

by junkhorse on Jul 1, 2009 3:39 PM CDT up reply actions

He's ready

Like Huet, he needs to have a steady position with his coach’s confidence. I think his game will step up; think back to his first game with the Indian head, a shut out, and the next game against Scum he faced fifty shots and stopped all but four.

by russellguldin on Jul 1, 2009 3:40 PM CDT up reply actions

if you're talking about that Ducks game

that wasn’t Crawford’s first game with the ’Hawks. That would be a 6-5 SO loss against the Blues in 06, I believe.

by gmh on Jul 1, 2009 3:43 PM CDT up reply actions

I sit corrected

I did not know about ’06; I was thinking of ’07. My bad.

by russellguldin on Jul 1, 2009 3:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Crawford

did post a shutout against the Wings in the 07-08 season. Everyone would love a more experienced backup but until either of these guys get some PT we’ll never truly know what we have.

by Crease Monkey on Jul 1, 2009 3:46 PM CDT up reply actions

I want Craw to have a shot

He is pretty close to fundamentally perfect; his relfexes are a bit slow, but he doesn’t let in the first shot he faces and has stolen games for Rockford.

by russellguldin on Jul 1, 2009 3:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Three years, total of $3.6 million.

by Crease Monkey on Jul 1, 2009 3:37 PM CDT up reply actions

I would love

to get Josh Harding from MINN…he’s a RFA and I’d imagine MINN and he’ll probably resign and/or be too costly for us anyway.

by Crease Monkey on Jul 1, 2009 3:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Harding would be solid

but agree … he’ll command some cash and we’ll likely not be able to compete with Versteeg, etc. also commanding cash.

Evil will always triumph, because good is dumb.

by junkhorse on Jul 1, 2009 3:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Does VERSTEEG! 'command' cash?

I have doubts that he is that dominant to demand any major cash.

by russellguldin on Jul 1, 2009 3:42 PM CDT up reply actions

no he's not

but he might think he is …

Evil will always triumph, because good is dumb.

The major issue with the Khabibulin deal is his age and the fact it’s a four-year deal. That’s a long time to lock up a 36-year-old

Can we get rid of him already? I hope he doesn’t have to play next year… Maybe we can have sopel, chelios, and the crypt keeper compete for a spot in training camp.

Is it monetarily possible for Havlat to be a Hawk next year?

All this Hossa/Khabby news…when do we find out that our hearts are broken?

by rsievert on Jul 1, 2009 3:44 PM CDT reply actions

It's iffy

JHC would have to take a one year deal and we decide to pass on VERSTEEG! Now, if we could dump Sopel ( a near impossiblilty with his reeeeeee-diculous contract), then there may be room for a longer contract.

by russellguldin on Jul 1, 2009 3:47 PM CDT up reply actions

probably

if the Hawks waive cest la vie to Versteeg, Barker, and find someone to take Sopel’s contract and JHC takes around $4.5-5m a year. Of course you’d also have to find D replacements. As much as I’d love to have him back we need to concentrate on the D. Beauche and if Q/Tallon insist on a physical presence to go along with 51Phantom would need to be fit into the cap.
