Free Agency Frenzy: Hour 6 - The Press Conference Hour
4:00 - Lets see what Tallon has to say now...
4:01 - More than winning the cup, Tallon says Hossa wanted to learn how to lead. I guess backchecking wasn't part of the lesson plan
4:03 - "Hossa's played a lot of games..." that's the first thing Tallon says when asked why him over Havlat
4:04 - "We've identified the core of our team".. says Panda's signing won't impact next year. I'd love some of what ever he's on.
4:07 - "How does he impact your team? Where do you get better?" - I'm guessing that reporter works for the Red Eye
4:10 - How bored is Kopecky going to be on the conference call he's on with Hossa in a little bit?
4:11 - Confirmation that Brouwer, Eager, Versteeg, Barker and Crawford were all qualified
4:13 - Interesting end to the presser there with Dale - 8 players at 33 Million but offers out ot all the RFAs? Good luck with that buddy
4:18 - Cammalleri is in talk with the Habs - and Havlat may have been offered a multi-year deal with the Wild...
4:20 - hah.. 420.. oh .. and ERRONEOUS Havlat wasn't offered a deal from the Wild.. that was Cammalleri again..
4:23 - Koci signs for cheap with the Avs - I'm not sure that's far enough away from Chara. He does like climbing mountains. Good luck sir..
4:25 - Confirmed, Cammalleri is a Hab 5 years/30Million
4:31 - OK.. we're ending the actual live blogging aspect of this and just jumping into the comments. We'll open up a new thread if the comments start to lag...
UPDATE: Pahlsson's going to Columbus, continuing Hitchcock's tradition of grabbing forwards who don't score, for 2.6 per, which I believe is a raise of 1 million for Sammi. Here's hoping Kopecky can shut guys down.

hey marian….do you remember when…..uh that one time when……..in a shootout…..in 2008……..you uh……..ripped a ridiculous top shelf slapshot past Khabibulin…………….yeah………..that was awesome.

Hahaha
They just showed the highlight of his slapshot!
by ZootSuitZombie on Jul 1, 2009 4:06 PM CDT up reply actions
that shot was, for lack of a better term, stupid
If he ripped that from the blue line, in an actual game, it would have cleared the glass. Just sick.

“We were just unable to get a deal done with Marty.”
30 sounds so … old in the context of the Blackhawks.
Did I miss the whole press conference while on the phone? Or where are you guys watching it?
VERSTEEG!
so by a rough outline it would appear that the Hawks have around $8.2m left under the cap but of course that doesn’t include
RFs
Troy Brouwer
Ben Eager
Colin Fraser
Kris Versteeg
Barker
backup G
and Pahlsson
yeah
that’s right…$1.2 or $1.3 for Niemi right?

Some fat guy is saying the hossa deal may not be as good as it looks as hossa had a much better supporting cast in detroit. makes jerk off motion
So....
We are looking at Huet and Crawford in net. Then Lines in some order…
Kane – Toews – (Brouwer)
Hossa – Bolland – Ladd
Buff – (Pahlsson) – (Steeg)
Sharp – Kopecky – Burrish
Keith – Seabs
51 – Hjammer
(Baker) – ??
(Needs to be signed)
hold on
how the hell do you not have Sharp with Toews and Kane, at least to start the season?

Not ONE FREAKING DEFENSEMAN……………
by Return of the Roar on Jul 1, 2009 4:24 PM CDT reply actions
the Hawks will bring in at least
one defenseman…probably a slow physical type to pair with Phantom on the cheap after all the FA frenzy dies down…I don’t see Q going with a Hjammer & Phantom combo.
by Crease Monkey on Jul 1, 2009 4:35 PM CDT up reply actions
but once paired with Hammer
Phantom started playing like a man.

We still have Big Johnson, right?
He is good with Soup and is not trying to be something he is not.

current D-men under contract
Brian Campbell
Brent Seabrook
Brent Sopel
Duncan Keith
Niklas Hjalmarsson
Minors
Jordan Hendry
Michael Brennan
Jean-claude Sawyer
by Crease Monkey on Jul 1, 2009 4:46 PM CDT up reply actions
Sawyer is, in the minors, a faster Barker. Good puck movement and that same sneaky slapshot.

the Hawks also have a few minor league RFAs in

RFA's
We will probably pass on Fraser, thanks to the deal with Kopecky; sad but true. Brouwer will probably get passed on as well, with Beach waiting in the wings. I would be fine with losing Versteeg. I think we need to concentrate on Pahlsson, Eager, and Barker.
Im kinda liking that
Good work Q junior

assuming we resign pahlsson
put pahlsson in with buff and ladd, and move kopecky to the fourth line?
"If you're scared, go buy a dog" - Stacey King
Is hossa a two way player or not?
I’ve heard it both ways and since I don’t watch wings games (unless we’re playing them of course) I have no idea.
I seem to remember
Hossa killing penalties for them last season. But yes, he’s a good backchecker as well as a sniper.
by gmh on Jul 1, 2009 4:31 PM CDT up reply actions
Remember how amazing he was in the playoffs?
by ZootSuitZombie on Jul 1, 2009 4:34 PM CDT up reply actions
it's also
setting the market for Kane. Young wingers who doesn’t play any D.
by Crease Monkey on Jul 1, 2009 4:38 PM CDT up reply actions
according to DT
He wants a fairly long contract. That’s probably the issue.
by ZootSuitZombie on Jul 1, 2009 4:45 PM CDT up reply actions
very few teams with massive cap space...this is why we'll be OK next year
when it comes to resigning the big three. no one can just throw ridiculous money out at RFAs, especially when considering the draft pick compensation. We are looking good, everyone is going to have to get used to complaining less about Dale…
by Canseco's Roid Party on Jul 1, 2009 4:47 PM CDT up reply actions
maybe everything. Don’t forget one of his miracles last season was staying healthy. He’s damaged goods. It’s like you’re always just waiting for him to break
I'm guessing his agent
wants to see Gaborik sign first to set the market. The Cammalleri signing should also help him.
by Crease Monkey on Jul 1, 2009 4:47 PM CDT up reply actions
Good point
I remember several times seeing him getting rubbed out along the boards and I just held my breath, saving it for a prayer that his shoulder didn’t break.

Leafs
according to TSN, Toronto has made a strong pitch for Mike Komisarek. Bob McKenzie says two other teams are taking a hard run at Komisarek.
Also TOR traded Kubina to the Thrashers. Toronto gets Exelby and Colin Stewart, while the Thrashers also get the rights to Tim Stapleton. They saved $2m in the deal.

5yrs/$4.5m a season. So Beauche should require at least $4m a year
by Crease Monkey on Jul 1, 2009 5:01 PM CDT up reply actions
That puts him out of our range, unless we aren’t resigning Dunc.
by russellguldin on Jul 1, 2009 5:04 PM CDT up reply actions
or Tallon waives adieu to Versteeg or Barker. Each will get around $3m.
by Crease Monkey on Jul 1, 2009 5:06 PM CDT up reply actions
I’m thinking with everything that’s happend that we’ll have to pass on Versteeg anyway..
Second City Hockey - Blackhawks, Beers, Beards & Blasphemy
Yeah, since we are pretty deep with wingers, we can let him walk. If only there was a team that was desperate for a young, puck hungry winger…
by russellguldin on Jul 1, 2009 5:09 PM CDT up reply actions
you’re probably right… but I hope the Hawks don’t offer Barker $3m-ish and let Boeuche sign somewhere for $4m…spend the extra mill if you have to.
by Crease Monkey on Jul 1, 2009 5:10 PM CDT up reply actions
I see Barks signing for $2M/year and staying put for a bit. I don’t see a team offering him a contract over that because of the Kaberle and Beauchemin situations.
by russellguldin on Jul 1, 2009 5:12 PM CDT up reply actions
you’re probably right, he made nearly a million last year but took up a $2.78m cap hit. If he’s back I hope Tallon brings Johnson back as well.
by Crease Monkey on Jul 1, 2009 5:18 PM CDT up reply actions
so that’s 11 forwards under contract…counting Skille & Beach (not including anyone else in the minors). Have to figure Eager or someone comparable (4th liner/brawler) will be on this team so that’s 12. Wonder if Tallon plans on resigning at least one of the RFA forwards…Brow or Fraser.
by Crease Monkey on Jul 1, 2009 5:15 PM CDT up reply actions
Beach or Skille will move up this year; I hope Skille works on his stickwork this summer, since that’s the only real weakness in his game. Dowell and Aliu are long shots in camp, unless we let Brouwer, Steeg and Eager walk. I’d like to keep Eags because his hustle is contagious and he can score some very pretty goals.
by russellguldin on Jul 1, 2009 5:20 PM CDT up reply actions
I guess it all depends on whether Pahlsson is coming back. If he’s back Fraser is in all likelihood gone.
by Crease Monkey on Jul 1, 2009 5:22 PM CDT up reply actions
Great day for the Hawks
Love the deal with Hossa especially at a cap friendly price. The only thing I am still concerned with is the goaltending, with Khabbi gone we are stuck with Huet, who I still don’t believe is a cup calibre goalie that will win us a championship, so it will be interesting to see what is done with that in the coming years
Lets Go Hawks!
Barasshole
was never a cup worthy goalie, but his fucking name is on it twice. Sometimes offense wins championships…
by russellguldin on Jul 1, 2009 5:14 PM CDT up reply actions
Do you believe he’s as good or better than Osgood? Because that’s evidently all you need..
Second City Hockey - Blackhawks, Beers, Beards & Blasphemy
They are similar in playing style and size. Interesting point, Dirt. No wonder you’re in charge around here.
by russellguldin on Jul 1, 2009 5:17 PM CDT up reply actions
Good point
The only thing I see with Huet is that some games he can be incredible in net (Game 5) and other times he looks dumbfounded and gives up soft goals left and right (Game 4). Osgood is usually dependable in net and you know what your going to get out of him. If Huet can find some good level of consistency it will work for this team because of the overflow of talent offensively.
Lets Go Hawks!
I'm pleased with the signings so far
Hossa is an upgrade over Havlat. Kopecky is a decent addition, especially if Pahlsson is gone which I assume he is, maybe not though. Still would like to see a D guy get signed. I still think they got some cap room so they may still add some smaller pieces. I was shocked they made a splash like they did with Hossa. I kept hearing no big moves like last year… from media, fan posts, organization… Guess things change when you lose the threat you thought you were going to resign. People are freaking out about 12 years but its super front loaded. Do some more Tallon please. Sorry to see Havlat go but if you took away last year losing him would be a blessing and not this big deal it is today. Go Hawks
crazy to think
Cap Hits
The roller coaster ride that was Huet – 5.6
The roller coaster ride that was Phantom – 7.1
40 goal scoring Marian Hossa 5.2
I know he hasn’t done anything for the hawks yet, but I’ll take it.
"If you're scared, go buy a dog" - Stacey King
I thought I saw someone post something on Campbell
that he invoked his NTC – are there any legs to this, is it still a possibility? My guess is no since we really haven’t heard much…
"...but the devil lives inside this kid, I swear it. It rises out of him in a mist, this baby-faced defiant wrathful version of Pat Kane, escapes his bodily confines to perform satanic miracles all over the offensive zone. The only thing more fearsome than that assist was the keep-in preceding it. The only thing more unholy than his face is his black magic." GMH
I don't buy it
The upside to having Soup is far greater than any potential gain with another D-man to trade, with the possible exception of Bouwmeester.

they’re already pretty deep at C with Brassard, Umberger, Vermette, and Novotny is a RFA. So ol’ Sammy will probably be a 4th line C for $2.65m unless they move Umberger back to RW.

Wow I'm glad to have both of those people in Chicago.
Let’s say one more than another.

ok
I was honestly too lazy to lookup the correct spelling, and I’ve already wasted enough time today watching the contracts. lol
You know, the Hawks used to be my team in the west. But this Hossa signing really puts a damper on things. I may have to hate based on association.
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com and twitter.
So was that Havlat to the Hawks post
just some jerk off talking out of his ass?
you'll have to be a little more specific...
Second City Hockey - Blackhawks, Beers, Beards & Blasphemy
There was a fanpost 10 minutes ago that said the Hawks resigned Havlat.
Then, it was deleted, so I assumed it must be false.
TSN
says Gaborik to the Rangers for 5y/$37.5M ie $7.5M per year. So Gabby at $7.5M and Cammalleri at $6M per…there you go JHC, there’s your market.
Madden ...?
Just saw a rumour that had Madden coming to Chicago.
I don’t know where the hell we are in the cap, but I suspect Tallon forgot his calculator at home today.
Still, if it’s true, I’m just as ecstatic as I was with the Hossa news.
haven't heard anything about it
but it certainly would take the sting off Pahlsson leaving.

That is huge, Madden is an absolute beast, and actually has more upside than Pahlsson. He’s teh dressing room fierceness we need. Love this fucking signing!
I guess
the kicker in this is that it’s a one year deal and Sammy received 3 years for nearly the same identical player. I’m still not sure I agree with the signing, I’d rather put the money into Beache but whatever.
