Free Agency Frenzy: Hour 6 - The Press Conference Hour

4:00 - Lets see what Tallon has to say now...

4:01 - More than winning the cup, Tallon says Hossa wanted to learn how to lead.  I guess backchecking wasn't part of the lesson plan

4:03 - "Hossa's played a lot of games..." that's the first thing Tallon says when asked why him over Havlat

4:04 - "We've identified the core of our team".. says Panda's signing won't impact next year.  I'd love some of what ever he's on.

4:07 - "How does he impact your team? Where do you get better?" - I'm guessing that reporter works for the Red Eye

4:10 - How bored is Kopecky going to be on the conference call he's on with Hossa in a little bit?

4:11 - Confirmation that Brouwer, Eager, Versteeg, Barker and Crawford were all qualified

4:13 - Interesting end to the presser there with Dale - 8 players at 33 Million but offers out ot all the RFAs?  Good luck with that buddy

4:18 - Cammalleri is in talk with the Habs - and Havlat may have been offered a multi-year deal with the Wild...

4:20 - hah.. 420.. oh .. and ERRONEOUS Havlat wasn't offered a deal from the Wild.. that was Cammalleri again..

4:23 - Koci signs for cheap with the Avs - I'm not sure that's far enough away from Chara.  He does like climbing mountains.  Good luck sir..

4:25 - Confirmed, Cammalleri is a Hab 5 years/30Million

4:31 - OK.. we're ending the actual live blogging aspect of this and just jumping into the comments.  We'll open up a new thread if the comments start to lag...

UPDATE:  Pahlsson's going to Columbus, continuing Hitchcock's tradition of grabbing forwards who don't score, for 2.6 per, which I believe is a raise of 1 million for Sammi.  Here's hoping Kopecky can shut guys down.

just cited Hossa’s durability — probably one of the biggest factors for signing him over Havlat.

If he ripped that from the blue line, in an actual game, it would have cleared the glass. Just sick.

by Crease Monkey on Jul 1, 2009 5:10 PM CDT up reply actions

I see Barks signing for $2M/year and staying put for a bit. I don’t see a team offering him a contract over that because of the Kaberle and Beauchemin situations.

by russellguldin on Jul 1, 2009 5:12 PM CDT up reply actions

you’re probably right, he made nearly a million last year but took up a $2.78m cap hit. If he’s back I hope Tallon brings Johnson back as well.

by Crease Monkey on Jul 1, 2009 5:18 PM CDT up reply actions

so that’s 11 forwards under contract…counting Skille & Beach (not including anyone else in the minors). Have to figure Eager or someone comparable (4th liner/brawler) will be on this team so that’s 12. Wonder if Tallon plans on resigning at least one of the RFA forwards…Brow or Fraser.

by Crease Monkey on Jul 1, 2009 5:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Beach or Skille will move up this year; I hope Skille works on his stickwork this summer, since that’s the only real weakness in his game. Dowell and Aliu are long shots in camp, unless we let Brouwer, Steeg and Eager walk. I’d like to keep Eags because his hustle is contagious and he can score some very pretty goals.

by russellguldin on Jul 1, 2009 5:20 PM CDT up reply actions

I guess it all depends on whether Pahlsson is coming back. If he’s back Fraser is in all likelihood gone.

by Crease Monkey on Jul 1, 2009 5:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Great day for the Hawks

Love the deal with Hossa especially at a cap friendly price. The only thing I am still concerned with is the goaltending, with Khabbi gone we are stuck with Huet, who I still don’t believe is a cup calibre goalie that will win us a championship, so it will be interesting to see what is done with that in the coming years

Lets Go Hawks!

by CubsBall2202 on Jul 1, 2009 5:12 PM CDT reply actions

They are similar in playing style and size. Interesting point, Dirt. No wonder you’re in charge around here.

by russellguldin on Jul 1, 2009 5:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Good point

The only thing I see with Huet is that some games he can be incredible in net (Game 5) and other times he looks dumbfounded and gives up soft goals left and right (Game 4). Osgood is usually dependable in net and you know what your going to get out of him. If Huet can find some good level of consistency it will work for this team because of the overflow of talent offensively.

Lets Go Hawks!

by CubsBall2202 on Jul 1, 2009 5:23 PM CDT up reply actions

What matters is the four rounds of the playoffs, ultimately. I’m not arguing one way or the other, but Osgood sucked last season in the regular season, then played outstanding through the playoffs.

by ChicoMaki on Jul 1, 2009 7:16 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm pleased with the signings so far

Hossa is an upgrade over Havlat. Kopecky is a decent addition, especially if Pahlsson is gone which I assume he is, maybe not though. Still would like to see a D guy get signed. I still think they got some cap room so they may still add some smaller pieces. I was shocked they made a splash like they did with Hossa. I kept hearing no big moves like last year… from media, fan posts, organization… Guess things change when you lose the threat you thought you were going to resign. People are freaking out about 12 years but its super front loaded. Do some more Tallon please. Sorry to see Havlat go but if you took away last year losing him would be a blessing and not this big deal it is today. Go Hawks
