Breaking Down the Marian Hossa Signing
After having a few hours to calm down and and gain some composure, lets look some more at the signing of Marian Hossa. For whatever reason, the Blackhawks could not get a deal in place with Martin Havlat. So that left $6 Million that they had last year to play around with and 77 points to make up for. There are some good sides and some bad ones to the Hossa signing. So lets start with the positive.
The Good:
Hossa's a hell of a replacement for Havlat.
A major concern for giving Havlat the long-term deal he was looking for had to be his reputation (well-deserved) for being fragile. In his eight years in the league, Havlat's only averaged 59 games a year. That's severly hurt by the 18 games he played in 05-06 and the 35 in 07-08 but he's played over 70 games only 3 times in his career.
Compare that with Hossa, who since really joining the league in the 98-99 season has played 70 or more 9 times. He's averaging 77 games a year and that's brought down by the 60 he played his rookie year when he missed time with his only significant injury.
There's also the production - both players are unstoppable when they're on, Hossa's just a little more "on" than Havlat. Havlat averages .84 points per game over his career, .95 over the past 5 years. Last year was his highest point total with 77 points. Hossa on the other hand averages .92 points per game over the career and over the past 5 years he's been at 1.05 per game. That's helped by his highest point total of his career in 06-07 when he broke into triple digits with 100 points.
If you were going to find a player to replace Havlat - congrats, you couldn't get much better. Getting that for only a 5.2 million a year is a steal.
The Bad:
Well - the cap situation is even more of a mess. That shit ain't good. I thought they'd only be offering a one-year deal to anyone since next year is going to be Salary Cap Doomsday with Toews, Kane and Keith all due hefty raises. With 5.2 due to Hossa now it's going to make it a lot trickier to get all three of them signed. Sure it's possible but all that money can't go to just 6 players, they can't play the whole game. Though Kane-Toews-Hossa with Campbell-Keith and Huet ain't too bad if they could play 60 minutes.
There's also the situation with Havlat. Like the Savard situation, it probably could have been handled better, though it's also half Havlat's fault for getting on twitter with his agent to confess his undying love for Chicago and the fans. It puts Tallon in a position of either signing a player he doesn't want or letting a player walk and making him the bad guy in the eyes of the fans. Maybe all contracts should include a no-twitter clause from now on?
Lets also not forget the always the bridesmaid, never the bride aspect of Hossa. We've just given tons of ammunition to our enemies.. but fuck 'em.

maybe
it’s the year he spent in Scumland but he looks like a Swede to me…not a Czech. For some reason I also thought he was taller…like 6’3….not that it matters much, just sayin’. Rich Panda indeed.
CAP
and of course you’re right. $35.170 million already committed to 9 players next season with
RFAs
Toews
Kane
Keith
Ladd
Hjammer
Niemi
UFAs
Burish
Madden
and yet still one more year of Sopel
Can he do what JHC did?
Not just in terms of points, but making plays and motivating the team?
I just caught up on all this tonight and am a little overwhelmed, also extremely concerned about money for D.
Can a Panda really perform for 12 years?
If I can't be a good example, I'll just be a horrible warning
I guess it depends on what it’s going to take to keep them. Seabrook took $3.5M a year…will Keith? Toews is worth whatever he wants so long as it’s not more than $6M per year which is what the Scum are paying Zetterberg and Datsyuk. Kane…well it all depends on how he progresses next year. I’m sure he thinks he’s a $5-6M player right now. If you were to get Kane and Toews at around $5M per + Keith at $3.5M that’s pretty much the entire cap space right there unless the cap is rising exponentially. Buff’s $3M should be movable if need be but It might come down to keeping Sharp or Kane or trading Huet or Campbell who has a no-movement clause. Perhaps someone from the minors like Beach will make one of these guys more expendable.

Thank you for mentioning Sharp
Everyone seems to always talk about trading Buff and his $3M next year, but Sharp has 2 years at almost $4M. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him leave via trade next offseason (or maybe even sooner). I think it is important to remember that he played on the 4th line in the playoffs for a good deal of the playoff run. I love Sharp and I loved Havlat (I even rooted for him when most others were ripping on the guy), but Hossa is an incredible talent.
While everyone is looking at the numbers that Hossa put up in this year’s playoffs (6G, 9A, 15Pts – tied for 10th in the playoffs with…Havlat), don’t forget that he was a force in 2008 with Pit (12G, 14A, 26Pts – 2nd most in G’s and Pts) and was talked about as a Conn Smythe favorite (with Crosby), had Pittsburgh won the Cup.

Sharpie
is streaky…no doubt. I’d hate to see him go but from the star caliber players he’s probably the best option if need be…of course Buff should go first though. Hopefully Beach or Skille will become a solid at least poor man’s version of one of these guys so they’re more expendable.

Keep Focus
I think it will be tricky to keep everybody, but also keep focus. WE WANT THE CUP NEXT YEAR! That’s really the key…we have one hell of a team setup (even w/o the whole RFA picture cleared up yet). Why worry about years from now when we just have the opportunity to go balls out and take it all right now? Let’s cross that bridge when we get there.
I personally see guys like Versteeg and Buff as luxury pieces. They have a lot of talent, but the team won’t be destroyed if they are shipped out. If you need to dump them and a couple others to sign Toews, Kane, and Keith to the prices that Crease Monkey mentioned…everything should just about work out.
7 RWs?
I just looked at the roster on Yahoo (cause I don’t know where to get good info other than here), and they have 7 RWs listed, only 8 D. I just don’t get it, do they have a plan, or are they just looking for interesting headlines and hype?
If I can't be a good example, I'll just be a horrible warning
Not so much just Hossa
which I’m still not sold on, but don’t absolutely hate, but why Kopecky too. That seems unnecessary.
If I can't be a good example, I'll just be a horrible warning
Kopecky
is the odd man out to me at this point. Hossa is the new Havlat, Bolland is the new Bolland, Madden is the new Pahlsson… is Kopecky the new Eager then?
And who's the new Big Country?!
Won’t somebody please think of the children!!
right now Kopecky would be the 4th line C though he’s more suited to a wing. I’d imagine Tallon will either bring back Fraser or find someone comparable…but as of tonight…right now…Kopecky is #4 on the C depth chart.

Kopecky
is definitely not the new Eager as you can see by this “fight” with Beachemin.

Fine,
but then why Madden? Why do we need both?
If I can't be a good example, I'll just be a horrible warning
both Madden and Kopecky? Well right now your centers would be Toews, Bolland, Madden and Kopecky. Plus there are rumors that Hossa and Kopecky were like a package deal. They are good friends…both Czech, and represented by the same agent. Fraser is a RFA so the Hawks need a 4th line C…right now Kopecky is it unless Fraser or someone else is brought in and Kopecky will move to a wing…perhaps more or less replacing Brouwer or if the Hawks decide they don’t need/want a winger who takes dumb penalties but fights, then he’ll replace Eager.

Senile Bowman??
What up with these years and numbers? If Hossa is worth that, and Walker is worth 1.7 a year for 4 yrs. What Keiths contract after this seasons 1.5mil?A billion a year for 75years.Kane and Toews a zillion and all the U.C.parking money what the fuck!!!!!!
hint
Walker is not worth 1.7 a year – Hossa is a steal at 5.2 a year
Second City Hockey - Blackhawks, Beers, Beards & Blasphemy
He's not worth
.7 million per year. But congrats to him anyways on his payday. Now Andy Murray will have to find some other asshole to come spy on us with.

My Condolences (spelled wrong i'm sure)
I truly am sorry you signed Hossa, i actually liked the Hawks out of the west but now it seems you signed the curse of the NHL for 12 years…Good luck and Godspeed you will need it with his bad juju.
I have a new line name
Should Hossa take JHC’s spot with the Fabulous Weapon and Laddie, the line could be the HoBoSaLadd! Hobo Salad!
Anyone?
anything hobo
and i’m on board
"...but the devil lives inside this kid, I swear it. It rises out of him in a mist, this baby-faced defiant wrathful version of Pat Kane, escapes his bodily confines to perform satanic miracles all over the offensive zone. The only thing more fearsome than that assist was the keep-in preceding it. The only thing more unholy than his face is his black magic." GMH
Hobo Lad
sounds like the world’s worst (best?) superhero.
I like that better than mine!
It would be a sad, sad outfit. Is anyone here old and nerdy enough to remember Ragman, the Tattered Tattermadaellion?

It's "Tatterdemalion"
Sorry about that. The last time I had encountered him was when I was 9 and sick in bed.
