Havlat Speaks Out... sort of

Matin Havlat apparently spoke with Darren Dreger of TSN about the issues he has alluded to on Twitter recently. The interview can be read here: http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=284740

I suppose I'm a little surprised that McD is such an egomaniac, but maybe I shouldn't be. I don't disagree with choosing not to re-sign Havlat, but I feel like he's already getting a ton of credit for the Hawks' resurgance, so he probably doesn't need to put his stamp on a player as well. Then again, maybe this is just the rambling of a player who wishes he was still with the organ-I-zation.

UPDATE:  Puck Daddy and B.D. Gallof both have good pieces up on this situation too.

McD is also supposed to be on 670 at 11:00 to respond to Havlat - which could be quite interesting.

I was just reading this. I can’t believe I’m anxious for less Hawks news.

Havlat gained my man-love in his play last year, and he’ll always be a Hawk for me, but I really wish he’d shut it. He keeps talking about Minny and moving forward … then another tweet or a fucking interview now comes out.

Controversy does no team good, no matter what kind of truth or lie is behind it. It would do wonders, I think, if someone in the front office talked to the players directly—Stan or Dale or Q, no one else, or possibly Rocky. When there are perceived fuck-ups, the best thing you can do is talk face-to-face with your “employees” and explain the truth of the situation.

well

It sure looks like McD this week is doing his best to give us someone to boo inplace of Dollar Bill the Departed.

his reception by the fans at the convention will be interesting.

Make no mistake, McDonough wields enormous power

Rocky gave him carte blanche to do what he sees needs to be done. McDonough is a meglomaniac who doesn’t mind burying people and letting them twist. Apparently Rocky is okay with McDonough being a s.o.b.

Unfortunately, I believe Marty Havlat hits the nail on the head. We’re going to see a signficant trade or two coming up. Patrick Sharp and maybe Kris Versteeg are as good as gone.

$136 million payroll for a .500 style ballclub. Good work Jim.

I think we all can buy into Havlat’s comment about the discord between DT and McD leading to him not being resigned, but I don’t know about the reasoning of Havlat being Tallon’s guy and McD wanting him out so he could get all the credit for guys brought in under his watch. Does this mean that McDonough has no interest in resigning Toews, Kane, or Keith? Those guys are all “Dale’s guys” drafted before McD was in the picture as is much of the current roster.

I'm interested to hear what McD says on the Score

but not interested enough to listen myself, so if someone else wants to throw any interesting tidbits up here that’d be great

Oh Lord.....

Rozner mentions Yawney in like the first 30 seconds they have McCub on.

by Big_Will on Jul 15, 2009 11:08 AM CDT reply actions

Rozner is a clown

This guy is supposed to be a journalist? How about asking a real question Barry? Nothing about how is Stan Bowman the answer when as the designated “cap guy” he was clearly part of the problem to this point.

I don’t trust McDonough. He is turning into Jerry Jones of the Cowboys without the actual ownership or the accomplishments. I really don’t care about Tallon being fired, you could find a cause, but this is a problem going forward.

Someone seriously tell me how did Barry Rozner get his own show… he is fucking retarded.

by Delta0ne1 on Jul 15, 2009 12:01 PM CDT up reply actions

He’s really trying to discredit the Boston artcile and doesn’t really want to talk about the rumors of him sabotaging Tallon.

by Big_Will on Jul 15, 2009 11:11 AM CDT reply actions

McCub denies any talking to Marty or his agent about any contract. So someone is really lying

by Big_Will on Jul 15, 2009 11:12 AM CDT reply actions

So?

Did anyone say that McD(I’m serious considering adding “ouche” to his nickname) was actually talking to Havlat and his agent? I thought what Marty implied was that Tallon was ready to sign Marty, but Tallon could not get McDonnough to buy off on it. I don’t think anyone said McDou…… was directly negotiating with marty. Am I incorrect?

Hear hear. The Hawks are going to be a damn good team. That’s all I care about. Winning (which they will do) will cure all this bullshit in no time.

The more I hear about McDonough the less I like. The promotional machine doesn’t bother me too much, but just like during the regular season you ride the hot hand. Tallon got us one step away from the stanely cup finals why would you do something to hinder the course we were on considering the improvement made year after year?

Not sure if it was said before but the hossa signing reeked of bowman, but I like the hossa pick up so it didn’t bother me.

If the UC turns into the new wrigely field I will be very dissappointed.

It already has. Welcome to it.

by McClure on Jul 15, 2009 11:56 AM CDT up reply actions

what exactly does that mean?

Why is the UC the new wrigley field, because McD and Blunk are doing good marketing?

The only comparisons I see are, neither team has won in a long time, and it is now ridiculously hard to get tickets to both the Hawks and the Cubs, which is a bittersweet thing.

I also don’t understand the negative connotation.

by Hack on Jul 15, 2009 12:22 PM CDT up reply actions

I think a better thing to say would be that the UC doesn’t end up as the new Madison Square Garden, where everything is a PR nightmare and everyone is overpaid and everyone is signed to unmovable long-term contracts and the team is constantly underachieving…

by warrenjm2006 on Jul 15, 2009 12:29 PM CDT up reply actions

The negative connotation would be a management team who is much more concerned with monetary generation than with winning. For a ’Hawks fan for over thirty years, this might signal a return to the bad old days.

Because Wrigley

Is known as a place where folks go to just get shitcanned and sit in the sun. If there happens to be a baseball game being played, so much the better. The general consensus is that about %50 of the folks at a Cubs game are there to enjoy the sport, and the other %50 are there to be “seen” because it’s the “cool thing to do”.

by AirTrafficAJ on Jul 15, 2009 1:57 PM CDT up reply actions

thats so ignorant

where do you get your “general consensus.” I bet if you ask a general sample of Cubs fans that stat would be better.

your just some pissed off white sox fan whose upset that the Cubs get more coverage (and rightfully so)

don’t marginalize Cubs fans. Im sure if I went to a White Sox, Red Sox, Yankees etc, I could find people who are there for the experience as well.

by torpedo0126 on Jul 17, 2009 6:55 PM CDT up reply actions

It’s how they are marketing and the atmosphere they are promoting with thier marketing. Wrigely field has been unbearable for a while now. It’s like baseball has become a secondary activity to many while they are there. For the people that do watch the facination with the long ball has taken precedent over solid play is seems. Players like Lee and aramis harolded as cornerstones of the team, but have choked in the playoffs 2 years in a row now? I could also be a somewhat bitter, but thats just my take on things.

The last 3 comments

Are valid for wrigley and a percentage of cub fans (I’m a cub fan and I agree about some of the less than desirable fan motives). But what people don’t understand about the cubs is that for each 1 douche just hanging out at wrigley not watching the game, there are 5 fans at home watching the game on TV just because they love baseball. It is a vast fanbase that has its share of morons, but so does every large fanbase in sports, and having a large fanbase with some morons is better than having a small fanbase with just a few morons. It is all about the sample size, the percentages of stupidity across the board are similar.

But it is unfair to compare Wrigley to the UC. Sure going to the UC has somewhat become the “cool thing to do”, but there is no sun, no beer, no bleachers, no Ivy, no girls in tank tops, none of the things that you guys are associatiing with wrigley.

It is the age old discussion in chicago. Would you rather have 50 fans with 5 douchebags or 500 fans with 50 douchebags, sure you’ve got more unsavory people, but the percentage is still the same, and more fans gives you the ability to spend more money. Why do you think the hawks are suddenly able to push the cap without worrying about the impact on the collective wallet?

The hawks are accumulating more fans, and that is a positive by me.

Brilliant Point!

We should be hoping for as many douches as possible, and the more money they’re willing to spend, the better. The salary cap is directly tied to NHL revenues, and more douches ultimately means more revenue. You may not feel it’s important for hockey to expand the number of fans it reaches, but just pretend it’s important for the time being. Once we have Toews, Kane, and Keith locked up, you can go back to being an elitist if you prefer.

there’s an easy way to avoid the d-bags/ex-fratboys/non-game watchers at Cubs games…don’t sit in the bleachers with the cup-stackers. It’s pretty simple.

by Crease Monkey on Jul 15, 2009 2:41 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't know

If it’s about avoiding the D-bags. Hockey has always been somewhat of a niche sport. It’s always been about the quality of the fan. If you love hockey, you are probably at the game, or watching the game, or listening to the game on the radio. The same can’t be said for the attitude of some of the folks at the Cubs games, and I personally don’t want to find myself next to some of the bleacher bums when I’m trying to watch the Hawks game.

I realize the NHL needs to grow the sport, and unfortunately I am at a loss as how to do that without attracting some of the hangers on. I suppose we can’t avoid having people like these show up. I just don’t want to sit next to them.

The Darklord Havlat has gone too far.

For the duration of the season, The-Man-Formerly-Known-As-Jesus-Christ was my salvation and guiding light. When he tied and then won Game 1 against Calgary, I (like all of us) was taken to a greater plane of being. I saw things differently. Shapes and colors spoke to me and revealed ancient secrets and mystical truths.

Unfortunately, he seems to have revealed his true form: egomania and lack of grace or decorum.

To be honest, as long as we’re winning, I couldn’t care less who’s wearing the suits in the front office. The only sad thing about any of this is that the Darklord Havlat has made a spectacle of himself and sees a need to spread his message of hate and destruction.

Marty, you’re not a Hawk anymore, so SHUT UP.

May the loathsome Wild rot for all eternity, and may Jesus Christ Hossa thoroughly EMBARASS The Darklord whenever our two teams meet.

by pinkpony on Jul 15, 2009 12:29 PM CDT reply actions

Let it go

What’s done is done. We are feeding Havlat’s Ego. Geez I wonder why he is gone. Maybe because he’s a freaking douchebag.

Martin Havlat – Skate with your head up! YOU would still be a Hawk if you took the advice of every coach in Hockey.

Who are these chumps on 670?

No wonder McD agreed to an interview, I’m sure these two had to swear they wouldn’t ask a single tough question, let him get off the hook with half-assed non-answers, and make jokes about any accusations before he even says a word. That’s some garbage, political journalism. At least we know 670 can lock up a soft-serve interview with McD whenever he needs a little good press.

Piling on

If I was a Wild fan or Wild coach or the guy signing checks there, I would also be wishing that Havlet would STFU right now too. If I was him, I wouldn’t want to leave either but it’s over regardless.

After enjoying the misery of Panda in the SCF, I was not initially happy with his signing but I came to see upside of that trade. With Tallon now, I am not happy either that he got the hook, but then again they are kicking him to the side and giving him the same money. I like Tallon’s judge of talent and if he is going to continue on having something to say there, I don’t care who is the GM. It seems like things have been done there by committee for awhile now, for all we know, maybe Tallon is glad to have it be on someone else if he is not going to be independent. We will not become the cubs because we actually have talent and because people around the league actually want to see the Hawks win.

If the Hawks do actually win it all next year, we know who built the team and he will be around to revel in it. That I am satisfied with. Bowman was going to get the nod someday and actually, I am glad they dropped this shit RIGHT now because it will be done with by the time training camp starts and we will be talking about something else. As for McDbag, he is marketing the team and we needed that after the dark ages of dollar bill. As said above, we will not reach critical mass with sustainability without well off douches parking their unschooled asses in the expensive seats. I once got lucky enough to sit a couple a rows of the glass and watched five little kids sit there with one dad and completely ignore the entire fucking game. That seemed a waste of seats and a thousand dollars to boot, but it’s what pays for Panda and what will pay for the kids next year.

I do hope that success though does not take away the skanky girls they find to shoot the puck in between periods. THAT would be a bummer.

by NKLHD on Jul 16, 2009 1:13 AM CDT reply actions

Marketing is overrated!

This is a hockey town, plain and simple. What happened to this franchise from about 1995 until 2 years ago was a complete revolt by the fans. People were fed up with Bill Wirtz and his philosophy on how to run a franchise, so they left. His death brought hope to the fans that endured his, and Pulford’s, antics for far too long. Winning was all they needed in order to come back to the UC, they didn’t need a marketing guy! What I don’t like about what’s happened with how Tallon, and Savard for that matter, was let go is the manner in which it all played out. It reminds me of the old Wirtz/Pulford regime and we thought we were done with that. I’m glad McDouche got booed at the convention, I only wish I would have been there to join in. As for Havlat being re-signed, if Tallon really wanted him and McDouche nipped that, it’s understandable that Marty is pissed. There was great chemistry on the team last season, and players felt there was unfinished business that they were looking forward to taking care of with the upcoming season. Even Hossa said it’s too bad Marty wasn’t here. Can you imagine the firepower with him on the current roster? As a player that was here for part of the darkest periods of late, I’d be bummed not to be a part of it this year too.
