Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Welcoming all the New Kids to Second City Hockey and to SBN

Not a huge shock really - but yesterday was the busiest day in the history of Second City Hockey in terms of visitors and page views.  So much like I did when I welcomed people who might be coming over when SBN first got us featured on Yahoo! I thought it'd be a good time to say hello to all the new people coming to the site - we hope you stick around.

Here's the quick history again - I started a blog that sucked so I won't even link to it.  Sam joined up because he was starting up The Committed IndianMirtle asked us to join up with SB Nation and we jumped at the opportunity.  Then we added McClure to write on the site with the hopes of it leading to more content but really we write the same amount with more people leaving more to drink or play video games... sometimes both at the same time.

That's about it - we hope you stick around and join in the discussion in the comments.

The most helpful thing you can do if you're a newcomer to the site is probably read this post - including the comments.  Otherwise you'll probably have no idea what we're talking about when someone says something like "I think it'd be a good idea to pair up Shooter with Daydream Nation again".

I'm lazy too so I'm going to suggest you also read this great post over at Defending Big D to learn more about FanPosts and FanShots.

even if you don’t comment or post often, its still pretty beneficial to join. You get to see which comments are new, plus you can see all the blogs on the network that you’ve joined and see which have new stories, fanposts, etc.

The free agency recap of yesterday was awesome. I loved the hour by hour coverage.
Keep up the good work boys.

All in all, I think we have to be pretty happy with what the Hawks did yesterday.
Hossa, Kopecky, and Madden were great pickups.
Can’t wait for the season to start

by Hard Hawk Hockey on Jul 2, 2009 11:41 AM CDT reply actions

Does this look about right for next season?

Kane-Toews-Hossa
Byfuglien-Bolland-Sharp
Ladd-Madden-Brouwer
Burish-Kopecky-Eager

Keith-Seabrook
Campbell-Hjalmerson
Barker-Sopel

Huet, Niemi

Or are we thinking that Versteeg might stay? What would a team have to give up in order to sign him?
Are there any rookies that we think will get called up early? I am, as my user name suggests, lost in North Carolina so I have no idea what goes on in Rockford.

by Lost In NC on Jul 2, 2009 11:49 AM CDT reply actions

Even without Versteeg

That looks pretty solid to me. With Versteeg, it looks like we would be the team to beat in the Central.

by Lost In NC on Jul 2, 2009 11:51 AM CDT up reply actions

I say we see how Aaron Johnson does before we stick Sopel in there…

by Delta0ne1 on Jul 2, 2009 11:56 AM CDT up reply actions

Sopel or Johnson...

That’s like choosing between “Rock and Hard Place,” isn’t it?

by Lost In NC on Jul 2, 2009 11:58 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah....

It kind of is… but i think johnson has more of an upside…

Also, I would rather bring back Frasier than Eager and let Kopecky play his more natural position of RW

by Delta0ne1 on Jul 2, 2009 12:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Either way

It will be very interesting to see what else Tallon has up his sleeve, and then what Q rolls out with to start the year.

by Delta0ne1 on Jul 2, 2009 12:07 PM CDT up reply actions

something has to be done about Sopel’s $2.3 mil cap hit.

by G8K33P3R on Jul 2, 2009 12:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Eager

may make that choice easy if the rumors of him wanting his salary to double this year are true.

by runningquicklynowhere on Jul 2, 2009 2:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Johnson

is a UFA.

That third defensive pairing has about as much mobility as two legless Hal Gills. Might have a bit more luck if we just get them to sit on the bench and throw their gloves at whoever’s rushing into our zone.

Barker has his merits, but not if he’s paired with Sopeless. That said, minus his musical taste, I kinda like Sopel, and hope for both his and our sake that he finds a way to rebound this year.

by Trixietrx on Jul 2, 2009 12:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Fair point

I guess I was just trying to get all of the names out there… I guess I should leave it to the hockey gods to assign pairings. Although, I drool at what the lines might look like with Versteeg… is there any chance that he doesn’t get an offer we’re unwilling to match? Who’s in the market for an unpolished, impetuous young stud?

by Lost In NC on Jul 2, 2009 1:35 PM CDT up reply actions

I’d prefer to see Crawford backing up

by G8K33P3R on Jul 2, 2009 11:52 AM CDT reply actions

You and me both

But he isn’t the one the team moved quickly on in Free Agency. I’m guessing that we’ll see Niemi as the back up at the beginning.

by Lost In NC on Jul 2, 2009 11:57 AM CDT up reply actions

From what I understand, Crawford was offered a deal too but Niemi was just the first to sign so that’s why the news came out. Maybe Crawford wants to see what else is out there?

Longtimer on WCG

SB blogging nation is fantastic, and very informative to receive all the pertinent information on our favorite teams. I live out in Colorado, but remember the glory days of seeing games at the Stadium. It’s great to finally see the Hawks back in the saddle again! What does everyone think Tallon will do next?

Kane, Toews, and Sharp

Do they all need to be resigned, or is Sharp locked up?

Sharp is signed through the 11-12 season.. It’s Keith that’s an RFA next year

Man...its incredible how much I missed yesterday

through a combo of scrambling to finish up a project and catching a flight by the skin of my sack.

Still not sure how I feel about all of this. Sad about Havlat, though very excited about Hossa. Though very sad about Havlat. More than that, though, I’m shocked this is how it played out at all. Kind of seems like next year we’re going for broke to win the cup. If it doesn’t happen, Tallon/Bowman will have to get very creative to keep “the core” around.

By the way, good work, as always on all the liveblogging yesterday. Though I missed it in real time, this was a great way to catch up.

Got more soul than a sock with a hole.

Hey, a SBN site that doesn't fill me with intolerable rage!

Unlike a certain other site following a certain other team from this town, led by a certain miserable cretin. .. but I digress.

I like this place.

I’m a 20-something who started watching the JR/Cheli/Belfour teams in the early to mid 90s, stick with the team till 2003ish and then divorced the Hawks, a decision I continue to have zero qualms about. I came back the day the old cheap bastard died, and with an extra decade of mental seasoning I had a new appreciation for the game.

I’m a big follower of sabermetrics, so when all of the hockey info I get from the papers talks about “chemistry” and “playing the game the right way,” and the rest of those lazy sportwriting tropes, my brain drifts off like Homer’s when he’s getting the Apple Juice/Apple Cider lecture from Flanders. I don’t know a whole lot about Xs and Os but I do know from watching the 50-55 Hawks games I was able to catch this year that my opinion of Kane, Campbell, Huet and Wiz was drastically different than what I read from most other fans, and after going through the season reviews it seems people who know what they’re talking about have views similar to mine, so that was a nice ego boost.

As I said, I like this place, and plan on sticking around for awhile, though Cubs return to statistical averages and my full blown Jay Cutler Chubby might divert my attention periodically.

Cool

A Hawks blog.

Apologies, I jumped back on the bandwagon last year. I’m pretty savvy to sabermetrics myself and I’ve enjoyed alot of content behindthenet.org. So forgive me, but better late than never right?

Welcome aboard!!!

This is a pretty cool site to just rant and write about the team we all love. At times we don’t get along but in the end we all agree we want the one thing that is has eluded us all Hawks fan for far too long-the Stanley Cup. And it might be on it’s way very soon. This year soon!!!

It's never about the eventual destination, but rather the long journey and its challenging obstacles that are presented and what it takes to overcome them, that makes the taste of success all the more worthwhile!!!
