Unreal.
The Hawks had to have given him a physical when he signed. This offseason has been a rollercoaster.

All contracts have the "pending physical" tag at the end of them when initially signed, right?
It would be logical to assume the Hawks gave Hossa a physical before they agreed to the deal and were satisfied with the results.
With all of the mistakes the front office made during the offseason, I wouldn’t be surprised if they waived the physical. Is it possible that some of his contract could come off the books if he doesn’t play a certain amount of games due to a prior injury? Or is that not allowed?
I would rather have him get the surgery and be 100% by December than be at 80% for the season or injuring it worse right before the playoffs.
Right,
let’s jump immediately to the worst case scenario. It was only Sassone saying surgery was even an option.
The contract is signed and done. No return policy.

there is no middle ground..
only extremes.
Plus it’s a good way to keep the offseason from getting too boring

How did I immediately jump to the worst case scenario?
I said I’d rather have him get surgery if it’s necessary than play the season at less than 100%. I don’t really see how that’s jumping to a worse case scenario.
well..
worst case scenario is surgery/out til Dec…
Or I guess worst case is he’s done forever.. but whatever.
I think he’s just making fun of everyone who immediately jumps to panic-mode.. not you specifically.

Just hope its not true!
Doesnt it seem like some of last years joy is being tarnished by all this recent negative publicity?
Wonder if Rozner
will say that the contract was a total ‘rozner’ move. Better yet, he’ll somehow come to the conclusion that DT was hoodwinked and left McD in a bad place on this one….

But at least we have someone who is legitimately trying to fill Havlat’s void…

Like clowns popping out of a mini cooper
Team dysfunction keeps on coming. I have to admit that I am genuinely surprised it took this long for the information to come out, I mean the other interested teams have to know as well don’t they? Until I hear more information, I will wait to see if this is something to freak about. In the meantime though, it’s another thing making us look like the Clampett’s rolling into Beverly Hills.
This wouldn't have happened if Dale Tallon was still the GM!
You know, what probably happened is the team didn’t have enough money to pay a doctor for the physical because of how much they overpaid for Versteeg and Barker after the qualifying offers fiasco. Maybe if the team went after a good D-Man in the offseason, the stars wouldn’t be getting hurt like this. But no, now we have an injury prone star right winger when we could have Marty Havlat! It all goes back to the Campbell and Huet signings— I can’t believe they haven’t traded Buff yet.
(Did I hit all of them?)
I know it is against Chicago fandom rules to look at anything with optimism
I know that I could lose my Chicago sports fan card by saying this, but 2 months out might actually be a great scenario for the Hawks (not as good as having a top 5 forward in your lineup, but…). This could put other players into the lineup for 6-8 weeks and drive their value up and make them more valuable in a trade to help create cap relief.
Either way, I think everybody would agree that good money is on Hossa playing many more games in the next 3 years than Havlat.

I don't think
That a rotator cuff injury shows up in a routine physical. I think it’s one of those things where, unless the guy simply can’t lift his arm over his head, you can only detect it via MRI.
HOCKEENIGHT.COM
From my brief searching, it seems like there are a few things they can do with out busting out the MRI, but for the most part you are right. Most of the symptoms are generic and could be a wide range of issues. Good old reliable Wikipedia for some answers…
I had my shoulder scoped last year, and the surgeon (who consulted on Havlat/Prior/Wood’s shoulders) told me he’d decide while he was in there if he was going to do anything with my cuff (a torn labrum was the main problem).
He would up cleaning it out a little, but he couldn’t be sure until he actually got the scope in there.

well, this blows...
but I’m not going to freak out unless the team plays poorly during the season…All I’m saying is that it’s only the off season, right? Granted, our team reminds me of an Aaron Spelling show, but things will work themselves out
And if he's out until December...
then he is. Bottom line, I still love our chances this season. And, um…it’s been a pretty freakin’ long time since I’ve been able to say that and actually mean it.

Just to get this straight.
We paid a ton to a guy with a shoulder injury to come here when we could have paid a guy with a shoulder injury less to stay with us? I agree that Hossa was a slight offensive upgrade over Marty, but come on, this just looks terrible. Hawks must be the laughingstock of the NHL management.
a guy with a shoulder injury
groin injury, and head injury…

Yeah, but
The groin had him miss what, one game? And none for the shoulder?
by AirTrafficAJ on Jul 22, 2009 11:58 PM CDT up reply actions
Talking about Martin Havlat's whole career, not one season.
December 22, 2007: Missed majority of 2007-08 season recovering from shoulder (October 4, 2007 at Minnesota) and groin (December 22, 2007 at Ottawa) injuries.

Hossa is a better player than Havlat.

WE SHOULD HAVE SIGNED HAVLAT!!!!!!

OMG!!
no one even mentioned that this story was conveniently leaked after the convention and Stan Bowman who had other media obligations lined up this week canceled them all…er well at least those today. On a slightly more serious side, this could mean they’ll be more hesitant to deal Sharp/Versteeg now.
From the trade point of view, this could be helpful though. As someone mentioned above (or in another post) this could force the team to hold onto their scoring assets until midseason, when the market will shake itself out and you’ll probably get more value for Sharp/Versteeg/etc than you would right now.
Ultimately teams, with the exception of Toronto apparently, probably like where they’re at right now. Just cross your fingers and hope the tradeable assets stay healthy and continue to produce until a time when some team realizes they have a serious need up front.
Well
I’ve jumped around some of the other Hawks sights as well now and it seems like people are a bit fired up about this. If I had shelled out money for season tickets solely because the Hawks signed Hossa, I guess I’d be really pissed too. I’m more objective about it though. For the last few years, the Hawks have made several moves that were dead on, and they have spent money to show they are serious as a heart attack about winning a cup. Yeah, we are looking like the Clampett’s off the ice, but no one can say that the team on the ice last year was a bullshit product or fluke. If it is true that Hossa was hurt when GOT TO Detroit as one site is alleging now, what does it say about the glorified organ-I-zation of the red wings that they didn’t let the truth out either? Not only that but Hossa scores 40 goals last year while hurt?!?!?!?!?!? Given the public stumbles, it’s hard to not be cynical right now. Still, this ain’t foreign policy with Iran, it’s a freakin hockey team. I want a cup more than I want to know who wears tighty whiteys in the front office.
